Bayelsa state govt declares 7-day break for workers over flood disaster

The Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri, has asked civil servants to stay at home for a week due to difficulties being faced as a result of the flood disaster ravaging the state.

Governor Diri announced this during a statewide broadcast on Tuesday morning, October 18.

He stated that though the flood is a natural disaster that has affected many other States of the Federation to various degrees, nearly a million people in over 300 communities in the State, have been internally displaced while some deaths have been reported.

He said critical infrastructure like hospitals, roads, bridges and schools, including the state-owned Niger Delta University in Amassoma, the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri, and the University of Africa, Toru-Orua, have been severely affected.

“We urgently solicit the support of Multinationals, International Donor Agencies, the Red Cross, Diplomatic Missions and people of goodwill to come to the aid of our state.

I appeal to Mr. President to consider special grants to the state from the Stabilization Fund, Ecological Fund and Natural Resources Fund.

Over the last few days, floods have overwhelmed our communities and severely impacted the lives and livelihood of our people.

This is a natural disaster that has affected many other states of the Federation to various degrees. I have been on a tour of several of our communities to see at first hand the extent of destruction.

Our experience has shown that the flood water empties into our State.

From my personal assessment, the situation is dire. Nearly a million people in over 300 communities in the State, have been internally displaced. Unfortunately, some deaths have been reported.

The narrative is the same across Sagbama, Ekeremor, Southern Ijaw, Ogbia, Yenagoa, Nembe and Kolokuma Opokuma Local Government Areas. Businesses have been shut, properties lost and farm lands destroyed. We have a humanitarian crisis.

Critical infrastructure like hospitals, roads, bridges and schools, including the state-owned Niger Delta University, Amassoma, the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri, and the University of Africa, Toru-Orua, have been severely affected.

As I make this address, Bayelsa State is completely severed from the rest of the country as portions of the strategic East-West Road, the sole access to and from the state, between Ughelli and Patani in Delta State as well as Okogbe and Ahoada in Rivers State have collapsed with a high volume of flood water occupying the stretch.

Economic hardship has set in, as food, medical provisions and energy are now in short supply. The situation is desperate and getting worse.

I wish to on behalf of the people of Bayelsa, sincerely thank Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammadu Buhari, for his kind directive to the different federal agencies to come to assist the state.

I urge them to comply with this presidential directive expeditiously.Without exaggeration, the sheer scale of the devastation is not such that the state can handle on its own.

We urgently solicit the support of Multinationals, International Donor Agencies, the Red Cross, Diplomatic Missions and people of goodwill to come to the aid of our state.

I appeal to Mr. President to consider special grants to the state from the Stabilization Funds, Ecological Funds and Natural Resources Fund.

My dear people of Bayelsa State, I know these are indeed trying times and you have my assurance that I will stand with you through every step of the recovery process.

The Bayelsa State Task Force on Flood Mitigation and Management in liaison with the State Emergency Management Agency has established IDP Camps, and providing relief materials for victims of the flood.

I have also directed that the distribution of these relief materials should be done in a non-partisan manner. We are all first and foremost Bayelsans.

I hereby direct all Public Servants except those on essential duties to be given time off from work for the next one week. Let me make a special appeal to vendors, particularly of fuel, food, water and pharmaceuticals not to exploit the situation. We must be our brothers’ keeper.” he said

Two suspects arrested in Ibadan as vigilante group discovers human bones in ceiling

Two suspects, Rasheed Dauda and Ayoade Kehinde, have been arrested in Ibadan, Oyo State for possession of human bones.

Dauda, 41, and Kehinde 32, were apprehended up by the Oluyole Security Surveillance Team in Oluyole Local Government Area after it received information about the bones hidden in the ceiling of Kehinde’s house.

Kehinde, who disclosed that the bones were picked from the remains of a female deceased person, however said that he and his partner had yet to decide what to do with them so they kept them in the ceiling of his house.

But Dauda, who admitted sighting the female body under a mango tree with others, denied picking the bones with Kehinde, saying that he never knew that the second suspect went back to where the body was seen.

The OSST Commandant, Olusegun Idowu, who briefed the Nigerian Tribune about the arrest, said that prior to the arrest, the team was informed of how Dauda, who allegedly got drunk in a beer parlour, started boasting that he would soon become rich.

“Community members who heard of the boasting started wondering what he meant. They also noted the stealing of chickens and other farm products in Bare Community,” Idowu said.

“It was some of his friends who felt he was making jest of them when they were arrested for stealing chickens that exposed him, saying that what he was involved in was more terrible than what they did.”

In an interview, Dauda, who said he hails from Popoyemoja but lives at Bare Community, said:

“What happened was that in March 2021, I went to Ajanla Community to work. Kehinde and two other boys went with me. We were on our way back when we stopped by a mango tree to pluck some. One of the boys with us said that he was hungry.

“When we got to the mango tree, the boy ran to meet us and invited us to see what he had discovered. When we got there, we saw a decomposing human body and I told them to let us go home, and we left there immediately.

“Since then, I had not been in the area and did not know anything until a few days ago when a boy ran to me and said that someone said I had human bones in my house while I wanted to expose those stealing chickens.

I called Kehinde and asked him if there were human bones with him, and he said no, asking me where he would find such when he could not exhume his dead father’s bones.

“The following day, on my return from a meeting of OPC members, I heard of the claim again. I asked Kehinde and he denied it. “To my surprise, I heard this morning that Kehinde said that we both went to take the bones. I didn’t know anything about it. In fact, the bones were found with him and not in my house.”

However, in Kehinde’s confession, he mentioned Dauda, saying that they both picked the skull and bones of the decomposing body. He also said that he didn’t know how the skull disappeared from the room he initially kept the bones, which made him to hide other bones in his ceiling.

“It is true that human bones were found with me. I hid them in the ceiling. One day, I went to farm at Ajanla Community with Dauda.

We also had Falafolo and Apesin with us. On our way back, Falafolo saw a decomposing dead body and ran to meet us at the road side. When we got to the spot where he found the body, Dauda and I picked the bones and put them in a cellophane bag. We also picked the skull.

When we got home, I told Dauda that I could not keep the bones with me, asking him what to do with it,”

“We decided to put the sack in a room opposite my wife’s own. After seven days, I went to check back but could not find the skull. Falafolo was angry. We wondered who must have come for the skull and I thought that it could not have been behind Dauda.

“When I called him to ask, he said he did not know anything about it. He rained curses on whoever must have done it and we decided to put the bones in the ceiling. That’s the main reason the bones were with me. We didn’t mean to use them for anything.”

“Since I came to this world, I have never sold human bones. We didn’t even have the identity of the deceased. We just found the body by a mango tree. It was not buried; it was just thrown inside the bush. We could see the cloth the dead person was putting on. It was Ankara with red colour. The deceased was a female.”

The Commandant said that the suspects had been handed over to the Toll Gate Division of the state police command.

Two persons narrowly escaped death when a waste compactor truck plunged into the Lagos lagoon.

The incident, according to an eyewitness, happened at about 7.45 pm on Monday, October 17, 2022.

Panic as corpses float in Bayelsa and Delta cemeteries

Residents of Aeroplane Road in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, and Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta have raised the alarm over floating corpses from submerged cemeteries in their environment.

This comes as flood ravages most parts of the country. The Federal government has said that over 603 persons have died, two million persons displaced and hundreds of hectares of farmlands have been destroyed, since the flooding incident began.

Residents of Yenagoa in Bayelsa state on Monday raised the alarm when they spotted the floating corpses. They called on the state government for immediate action to avoid a public health crisis.

A resident of the community, Mr Emmanuel Oden, lamented that the floating corpses had become a recurring development during floods, adding that relocation of the cemetery is long overdue.

Oden further alleged that corpses at the cemetery were often buried in shallow graves of about 3 feet, rather than the recommended six feet prescribed by law.

The morgue at Bomadi General Hospital and Olodiama had been submerged, also with floating corpses as a result.

Reacting to this development. the Bayelsa state Commissioner for Environment and chairman of Bayelsa Flood Committee, Iselema Gbaranbiri, confirmed that three floating corpses were recovered and reburied with the environment properly fumigated.

”The floating of corpses were actually reported. First, as commissioner for the environment, I got the report of a floating corpse and directed my head of health and sanitation to get the corpse reburied. Later two more corpses were recovered and reburied and the environment was properly fumigated.”

More disaster was recorded in parts of Delta State yesterday as many villages in riverine Bomadi, Patani and Burutu local government areas of the state were sacked by floods as their homes have been submerged by the flood.

Speaking on the unfortunate incident, the chairman of the Bomadi federated community, Seleyeibo Perekeme, said neither government nor political leaders from the area had responded to their call for help.

“The entire Bomadi Local Government area is submerged, with only the council secretariat still standing because of community efforts.

We’ve been able to dislodge the flood by blocking entry points with sand-filled sacks at the community waterfront through our earlier efforts.

Now, the flood level has risen and we’ve been making similar efforts but we’ve run out of resources as a community.

So, we’ve been calling on our political leaders to help since Bomadi is the last community standing and victims are fleeing in from neighbouring communities, such as Kpakiama, Oboro, Esanma, Tuomo, Tubegbe, Koloware, Ogboin-ama and many others in both Burutu and Patani council areas. Many victims are fleeing from Yenagoa to Bomadi.”

Police confirm arrest of Labour Party senatorial candidate who is Governor Umahi’s opponent

Ebonyi state police command has said that Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate for Ebonyi South Senatorial zone, Linus Okorie is in its custody.

It was reported earlier that the two-term House of Representative candidate who represented Ohaozara, Onicha and Ivo Federal Constituency, was taken away by “gunmen” on Sunday morning.

Ebonyi police command spokesperson, Chris Anyanwu who confirmed that Linus who is Governor David Umahi’s opponent in 2023 senatorial election was arrested by Ebubeagu Security operatives and taken to Old Government House Abakaliki, debunked reports that he was abducted.

He said the Police upon hearing reports that Linus was abducted, swung into action and later traced him to the head office of the Ebubeagu Security Outfit at the Old Government House, Abakaliki.

Anyanwu revealed that Okorie was arrested for inciting violence in the State, falsely accusing Governor David Umahi and alleged involvement in drug related offences.

He said;

“Police detectives were briefed on why he was arrested which include his activities and utterances that incited and provoked the violence that engulfed Onicha LGA which led to suspected IPOB/ESN operatives or unknown gunmen to unleash mayhem in the area, leaving seven (7) persons dead at the end of that fracas.

“Hence, the case has now been taken over by the Police Command for a scrupulous investigation.”

Anyanwu also alleged Okorie was severally invited by the Security and Intelligence Bureau of the Command over a petition dated 23/3/2022 by the Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice, alleging that he was spreading fake news against Umahi.

In the petition, Okorie allegedly accused the Governor of illegally withdrawing N6.7 billion from State Government’s Account to fund the Appeal Court Judgment against his removal from office, etc.

The police spokesperson added;

“Similar to the above is another series of false allegations against the Government of Ebonyi State and the Police Command in his social media handles.

“When invited by the SIB over the false allegations/petition,Honourable Linus Abaa Okorie in his characteristic pompous manner refused vehemently to report to the SIB for a chat. Rather he chose to file fallacious suits against the Police Command.

“It is also pertinent to mention that Honourable Linus Abaa Okorie also have a pending case in which he is implicated in a drug-related offence where the suspects purported to be his agents were arrested for Hard drug sales and use at his City Hub Inn, Mile 50, Abakaliki. Case was later transfered to the NDLEA for further necessary actions.

“Ebubeagu is a lawfully established local security outfit by the House of Assembly and Government of Ebonyi State. If the outfit as empowered by the State Law, arrests anybody, it shouldn’t be interpreted as abduction or kidnapping because those terms mean different things.

“However, it is expected that the outfit after effecting such arrest, should hand over the matter to the Police for further investigation and other necessary actions which has played out in this instance”.

“In view of the above, Dr David Ogbonna of Hon Linus Okorie CaringHeart Foundation is warned to henceforth know the implication of wrong choice of words when next dishing out information for public consumption otherwise he will face the dire consequences as enshrined in the laws of the land.”

Kanye West has started the process of buying the social media app Parler, which is associated with far-right views and personalities such as Donald Trump.

This comes after Kanye’s Twitter account was locked for violating Twitter’s policies after he made comments deemed to be anti-semitic.

The acquisition was announced by Parler today, October 17, in a press release. Parler said that it has entered into an agreement in principle with Ye that’s expected to close later this year.

“In a world where conservative opinions are considered to be controversial we have to make sure we have the right to freely express ourselves,” Kanye said in a press statement.

Parler’s parent company Parlement Technologies said the acquisition would help create “an uncancelable ecosystem where all voices are welcome.”

Parlement Technologies added: “This deal will change the world, and change the way the world thinks about free speech.

Court order is major reason we suspended strike – ASUU president

President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Emmanuel Osodeke, has said that lecturers in the country called off their 8-month strike due to court order obtained by the federal government.

Osodeke who said this during an interview on Channels TV’s ‘Sunday Politics’, further averred that they are hoping the government will do the needful now the strike has been suspended.

He said;

“The issues have not been fully resolved and no agreement has been signed. So, we are resuming because we are a law abiding body and we don’t want to break the law.

We are also hoping that the intervention of the speaker, as promised by him, will resolve these problems in a very short time.”

When asked if this means the lecturers are not happy to be resuming, Osodeke said: “Definitely.

“In trade dispute, especially one involving university academics, the best option is negotiation and then you end it within a very short time,” he said.

“But the minister of labour believes that the best way is to force them to class. It’s so sad, but because of the interest of the Nigerian students, their parents, and the speaker, our members will teach.

“Any country that plays with education creates room for insecurity.

“We want the next administration to follow the trend of neighbouring countries and allocate not less than 16 percent of the budget to education. When this is done, these problems will be sorted out. Our children will go to school effortlessly.”
