Manchester United are progressing in contract talks with Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker Matheus Cunha ahead of a possible summer transfer, reports have revealed. The Brazilian has joined United’s shortlist for new attacking options, with reports of 22-year-old striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town and Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan.
Cunha has been viewed as a perfect opportunity to help Ruben Amorim’s side increase their goal opportunities. He plays a similar role under Wolves’ current boss Vitor Pereira and will help in midfield positions in Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation.
Following Sunday’s home defeat to Wolves at Old Trafford, Amorim stated that the club has a “plan” to enhance the squad, which he said the situation cannot be addressed until summer.
The race for the attacker in the summer transfer window has been joined by the league’s big names, such as Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Newcastle.
The 25-year-old signed from Atletico Madrid in 2022 for £34 million and has been a significant factor in his team and currently is Wolves’ top scorer, with 14 goals and 4 assists.
Earlier this month, he mentioned that he needs to “take the next step” and fight for titles.
The attacker presents a versatile option for Manchester United to help them as a No.10 option as well as good on either wing.
However, the £62.5 million release clause could pose a challenge for the Red Devils, with selling players is likely to be crucial for United, but the club’s officials hope to raise additional funds for the transfer budget through the sales of on-loan players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony.
United’s plans for next season are challenged by uncertainty regarding their current financial situation. The club could gain around £100m by winning the Europa League tournament and an automatic qualification for the Champions League.
The club has had a busy season both on and off the pitch, losing key players such as young prospect Ayden Heaven, Joshua Zirkzee after gaining his footing in scoring in the Europa League, Amad Diallo, who has been out since February, and De Ligt. They have a Europa League semi-final to battle out as they meet Athletic Bilbao next month.
