Farm labourer sentenced to life imprisonment for raping teenager in Lagos

A farm labourer, Isiaka Adeoye, who raped a 17-year-old girl was on Wednesday October 12, sentenced to life imprisonment, by Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court, Ikeja, Lagos State.

Asides ruling that the prosecution proved the charge of defilement against the convict beyond reasonable doubt, Justice Soladoye also held that the testimony of the survivor corroborated the evidence of the investigating police officer and the medical reports.

The Judge who said that the judgement will serve as a deterrent to others, added that there’s no substantial contradiction to raise reasonable doubt in prosecuting the defendant.

The Judge said;

“I believe the testimony of the survivor in total as she eloquently and brilliantly told the court that the defendant had a c*nd*m on before he had s*x with her.

“The survivor told the court that her aunt sent her to do some work for her on her farm where the defendant works and that the defendant sent her to fetch water.

When she came back, she met the defendant drunk and he asked her if she wanted to have fun and he ended up having s*x with her.

“She said it was the farm manager that reported the case to the survivor’s sister when she narrated her ordeal in the hands of the defendant.

“The evidence of the three prosecution witnesses has sufficient proof that the defendant had s*xual intercourse with the survivor.

The address of the defence, no matter how beautifully written, cannot amount to vindicating the charge of defilement that the defendant truly committed.

“The evidence before this court shows that the defendant forcefully had s*x with the survivor as this is corroborated in the medical report that there were bruises in her private parts, which can be the result of a struggle between her and the defendant.

“This should serve as a deterrent to others as adults should not take undue advantage of young children and defile their purity. The defendant was busy telling lies before this court, but the court is not fooled.

“The defendant is hereby found guilty as charged and sentenced to life imprisonment. He should have his name written in the Lagos State Sexual Offenders Register.”

Outlining the need for sexual education, moral re-awakening and training of underage children to maintain sexual purity in society, Justice Soladoye added;

“The survivor, in this case, was insensitive as a 17-year-old girl ought to be proactive and run for her life when she saw a c*nd*m on the private parts of the defendant.

“Instead, she waited until the defendant forcefully had his way and had s*x with her.”

Elections in North-West and South-East may be hampered by insecurity – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission has expressed fear of elections in the South-East, North-West and North-East region of the country being hampered by insecurity.

Speaking at an event organized by National Endowment for Democracy and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems at the NED Headquarters, Washington DC, United States of America, INEC Chairman, Prof. Yakubu Mahmood noted that while insecurity has spread to some parts of the country, he has received assurances from the service chiefs that they would secure the voting environment during the 2023 polls.

He said;

“Are there concerns about the 2023 general election? I’ll be the last to say there are no concerns. The first concern is the perennial issue of insecurity in different parts of the country, compounded by the traditional issues of thuggery during elections organized by some of the political actors.

“I say it is a perennial issue because, at the end of the day, it is nothing new. However, the dimension of the insecurity is concerning in the sense that in the past, it was localized or confined to a particular part of the country, the northeast.

But now, it is more widespread and we are keeping our eyes, particularly on the northwest and the southeastern parts of the country.

“Elections are conducted by human beings. We worry about the security of our officials, voters and the materials to be deployed. Without them, we cannot conduct elections.

We have spoken to the security agencies and they have assured us that the situation will improve before the elections.“So, fingers crossed.

Those who are supposed to secure the environment have assured us that they will secure the environment for us to conduct elections. Our responsibility is to conduct elections.”

On the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), Yakubu said the technology has eliminated the flaws in previous elections, including identity theft and multiple accreditations.

He also said the commission has dispatched the BVAS to over 23 states of the federation.

Yakubu said;

“The BVAS has eliminated multiple accreditations that were observed in previous elections. Now, you are sure that the person who is accredited is the voter and the bearer of the card.

“It has increased public confidence in the outcome of elections as shown in the recent off-cycle elections. People tend to be more confident now with the protection of the process of accreditation using technology.

“It has eliminated the use of the Incident Form. For those of you who have been following our elections for a long time, when the Card Reader was introduced, the machine would read the card but it may not read the biometrics.

“So, when it fails to read the biometrics, they then say – give the voter the Incident Form. And through that, many people voted using identity theft. We have eliminated the Incident Form.

So, every registered voter must go through the biometric and the facial, and we jokingly say that the only way the two processes can fail, particularly the facial, is when the voter forgets his or her face at home on election day.

The system of using the BVAS for the conduct of elections has come to stay. There’s no going back.”

The Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arraigned one Emmanuel Adewunmi Jayeoba alongside his son, Adewale Daniel Jayeoba, before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos.

EFCC’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, whp disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, October 12, said the defendants were re-arraigned on a 14-count amended information bordering on money laundering to the tune of N5, 697, 029, 685 ( Five Billion, Six Hundred and Ninety –seven Million, Twenty-Nine Thousand, Six Hundred and Eighty- Five Naira) One of the counts reads:

“ That you, Adewale Daniel Jayeoba and Emmanuel Adewunmi Jayeoba, between 2019 and 2020, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, conspired amongst yourselves to use the aggregate sum of N5.697,029,685 (Five Billion, Six Hundred and Ninety seven Million, Twenty nine Thousand, Six Hundred and Eighty five Naira), which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of your unlawful activity to wit: carrying on banking business without valid license and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18 (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act.”

Bishop sacks five catholic priests over alleged insubordination

The Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese in Anambra State, Right Reverend Jonas Benson Okoye, has dismissed five priests in his diocese over alleged insubordination.

The five priests of St Martin of Tours, Ihiala, had reportedly been having a running battle with the bishop over their residency in the parish.

According to reports, trouble started when the bishop had ejected the priests from the parsonage of the church following an administrative rearrangement aimed at creating a new parish in the area

The priests who were said to have claimed that their order had been in possession of the parish for over 100 years, refused the order of the bishop to vacate the parish for new priests sent to the church.

Following their refusal to vacate their parish, the Bishop wrote a letter withdrawing their canonical faculties (authorities to perform acts or function in the parish)

Speaking to journalists in Ozubulu in Ekwusigo local government area, a former director of communication of Nnewi Diocese, Reverend Father Hyginus Aghaulo, said ”The Spiritans claim that Archbishop Heerey gave it (parish) to them in 1967.

That was under 1917 Code but Canon 6 of 1983 Code abrogated 1917 Code unless such matters are renewed in 1983 Code but there is no evidence that such happened.

Thirdly, 1983 Code abolished making a moral person now juridic person a pastor. Now to be appointed a pastor, the person must be a physical person and be in priesthood.

Even if a parish is given to a juridic person even in soliduum, the diocesan Bishop must appoint one of them the proper pastor.

Fourthly, under 1917 Code, when such grant was instituted, there was an express need for apostolic indult in order to have the character of perpetuity.

The 1983 Code gives the discretion and right of free conferral on diocesan bishops and those equivalent to them in law in line with canons 368 and 381, in the spiritual task of appointing pastors.

Thus, the diocesan can freely appoint and freely fire. He can freely create and freely suppress parishes without recourse to existing customs, grants and centennial or immemorial bequests and grants.”

Aghaulo maintained that religious institutes by virtue of their juridic personality were not distinctively and naturally destined for parish administration but for the living of evangelical counsel in their communities and convents unlike diocesan or secular priests whose destiny and nativity was to administer parishes.

He said in the Ihiala case, “Bishop Jonas Benson Okoye is a successor of Archbishop Heerey and so, has power to interpret or alter the perpetuity clause in such a convention because of “salvation of souls is the supreme law.

Aghaulo disclosed that the development had been reported to the Superior General whose duty it is to supervise the priests.

EFCC files money laundering charges against ex-Lagos Attorney General Olasupo Shasore

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has filed a four-count money laundering charge against a former Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Olasupo Shasore, SAN, accusing him of inducing one Olufolakemi Adetore to accept cash payment without going through a financial institution.

Shasore was the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice during Mr Babatunde Fashola-led government.

Vanguard reports that according to the charge sheet filed by the EFCC at the Federal High Court in Lagos on August 12, 2022, the former attorney-general was alleged to have made a cash payment of $100,000 to Olufolakemi Adelore through Auwalu Habu and Wole Aboderin.

He was alleged to have committed the offences on or about November 18, 2014.

The charge also added that the former Lagos State’s Attorney-General made a cash payment of $100,000 to one Ikechukwu Oguine without going through a financial institution.

The offences contravened sections 78(c); 1(a) and 16(1)(d) and 18(c) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended) and were punishable under section 16(6) and 16 (2)(b) of the same Act.

The arraignment of Shasore has been fixed for October 20.

Actor Tom Cruise forced to hire heavyweight bodyguards after string of death threats from former employee

American actor and producer, Tom Cruise has reportedly hired a security team after he and director Christopher McQuarrie received a series of threats from a former employee.

The A-list actor, 60, and the Mission: Impossible filmmaker, 53, acquired the services of the security team after a stunt producer was let go, which led to ‘angry protests’ and ‘fears of further reprisals,’ The Sun reported.

An insider with the film told the outlet, ‘Tom and Chris are still working on Mission: Impossible 8, mostly in the UK, but things have got increasingly unpleasant with a former crew member and now it’s a case of taking no chances.’

‘It’s a bit of art imitating life, on set it’s all about heavy protection and threats and now the same thing is going on behind the cameras.’

According to the outlet, the employee had been assigned to find filming locations for scenes – including one depicting a train crash – but his plans were not put into motion in the film.

The Top Gun: Maverick leading man ‘is used to having security teams around him most of the time because of his fame,’ the insider said, ‘but for Chris it’s a very new thing,’ as ‘nobody is taking any chances.’

The employee who was let go has began litigation toward Cruise, McQuarrie, and Paramount Studios, the outlet reported, and has made accusations about Russian oligarchs financing Cruise’s work and a related FBI investigation into Paramount over the financing.

The source noted that while ‘it’s all turned very n*sty … those involved in the films are confident everything is totally fine, he’s just an angry ex-staff member.’
