Read about the campaign to change the definition of word woman

About 100 high-profile figures have signed a letter to the Treccani Italian dictionary calling on it to change its definition of the word “woman”.

The campaign argues that derogatory terms such as “puttana” (whore) should be removed from the list of synonyms.

Such words reinforce “misogynist stereotypes that objectify women and present them as inferior”, it adds.

Treccani, a leading online Italian dictionary, has not yet responded, but previously defended its approach.

Among the letter’s signatories are LGBTQ+ activist and politician Imma Battaglia, politician Laura Boldrini, and Alessandra Perrazzelli, deputy director general of the Bank of Italy.

It was written by activist Maria Beatrice Giovanardi, who was also behind an earlier campaign to get the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) to remove words such as “bint” and “bird” as other ways of saying “woman”. After a similar petition attracted tens of thousands of signatures, Oxford University Press updated its definition.

The synonyms given in Treccani’s definition are even worse than the OED’s because there are 30 terms used to describe sex workers, Ms Giovanardi told Reuters.

Meanwhile, she added, the word “man” was associated with positive terms such as “businessman”.

“Language shapes reality and influences the way women are perceived and treated,” she wrote in her letter.

“Vocabularies, dictionaries of synonyms and antonyms, encyclopaedias are educational tools of reference and Treccani.it, as such, is consulted in schools, libraries and in all of our homes.”

“This will not put an end to everyday sexism, but it could contribute to a correct description and vision of women and their role in today’s society.”

In a blog post published in November, Treccani said that the dictionary did not “select lexicon based on moral judgment or prejudices”.

“If society and culture express negativity through words, a dictionary cannot refuse to document them,” it added.

“Having killed the woman and buried her in a shallow grave, the abductors did not stop there, they went on calling the children and collecting ransom. So far, they have collected N650,000 from her children after killing the woman.

“They made the children to believe that their mother was still alive. They did a video recording of their mother and played it to the children.

“One of the suspects was arrested and confessed to the crime, and said that was his first attempt at kidnapping and robbery.

Throw Back Thursday (TBT) with Kate Henshaw.

Actress and fitness enthusiast, Kate Henshaw is among the elite group of actresses who have significantly contributed to the Nollywood’s enduring reputation for creative excellence.
Born on July 19, 1971, and raised in Calabar Cross River Nigeria, Kate is the oldest of four children. She had her primary and secondary education in Lagos and Calabar respectively. She moved on to the University of Calabar where she spent one-year reading remedial studies. She then joined the School of Medical Lab Science, LUTH (Lagos University Teaching Hospital) in Lagos to study Medical Microbiology. She had to work at the Bauchi State General Hospital.

She started out her career in the Entertainment industry in 1993 when she auditioned for the lead role in the movie When the Sun Sets. Her talent won her the role, which became her first appearance in a major Nollywood movie. Although her success wasn’t immediate, it was from there that she created the actress she became and later evolved into a superstar. She has appeared in many movies numbering up to 45 including “Aremu The Principal” and “Above The Death”.

The increased exposure, acceptance and recognition allowed Kate to witness massive growth in her career. As a result, she won distinctive awards including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the movie “Stronger than Pain” in 2008. In addition to her film award, the star has had considerable success as a reality TV show judge. She is a judge on Nigeria’s Got Talent and is “The Face of Onga”.

Kate Henshaw had one of the longest celebrity marriages in Nigeria. She was married to Roderick James Nuttal. The couple was together for 12 years but the union shattered in 2011. The actress has a daughter, Gabrielle Nuttall with her ex-husband. Roderick Nuttal is the Managing Director of Ledrop Nigeria Ltd. The company is an agency for Jack Daniels and Piper Heidsieck Champagne. He has moved on with his life after their divorce and has remarried.

During her break up with her British husband, Kate was not in a hurry to share what went wrong. Some reports claimed that it was due to different cases of infidelity on Roderick’s part. According to the speculations, Rod was making out with his secretary Angela Gordon. Kate who was already suspecting that her ex-husband was cheating unexpectedly came to his office – after she had earlier told him that she was going to Lekki – and caught them red-handed.
Other reports, however, claimed the divorce was as a result of several cases of infidelity against Kate by her husband. Rod had accused Kate of having an affair with some famous people in both political and entertainment circles.

Some of the men who were pointed at for having an affair with the stunning actress included the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke and comedian, Bright Okpocha popularly known as Basketmouth (one of the funniest Nigerian comedians).

The talented actress has many goals and dreams so, there was simply not enough time to throw a pity party for herself. One of such goals is to be fit and sexy as she is among celebrity single moms looking hotter than some single ladies. The presence or absence of a husband does not affect what kind of person she is and her ambition. This, to Kate Henshaw, was just a circumstance and not what determines who she is or will become.

Happy memories as Akara seller gets surprise visit from brothers whom she gave free snacks daily on their way to school, 40 years ago

It is a natural phenomenon for school children to have snacks either on their way to school, or during break time, or immediately after school before lessons.

Some pupils in extreme cases, are even motivated with snacks before they can be convinced to go to school. So, the role of good snack either packaged in form of lunch bag or ordinary snacks can never be underestimated in the early education and childhood of a young student.

A surprised but elated Ugochukwu, posted the story on Facebook on Sunday, 10 January and shared photos of the scenery with the caption;

Today, while having the usual morning round table discus with my kinsmen, my Dad recollected the story of a lady who sold Akara while they were very small. He stated how the lady would always give them Akara every day they passed her place while going to school.

” My Dad’s brothers also stated the same. They said it got to a point that the lady would deliberately keep aside some portion of Akara to give to them anytime that stopped by. This was over 3-4 decades ago, and the lady should be way above 100 years now.’

” My Dad said thoughts of the Lady had always crossed his mind and was of the opinion that he had an obligation to see her, at least while she was still alive.

” My Dad’s brothers bought into the idea and within minutes, we decided to drive and go locate “Daada

When we arrived at her place, it was amazing to see how agile she seemed after living for over a century.

”Immediately we got to her, she hugged every one of us with excitement and rubbed our foreheads with the charcoal on her fingers, while raining blessings on us. Amazingly, Daada was able to recognize the “Children

” They recounted their experiences with her, mehn, you need to see her excitement. The thing is, she never had any child of her own, but her kindness to these children was phenomenal, and for these “children” to visit her unexpectedly after many years, in remembrance of her act of kindness, it was a great deal to her. She entertained us with groundnuts.

”When we were about to leave, everyone put funds together and gave to Daada for Christmas, and Daada told us to come together, went in to bring get her Bible, and started praying for everyone. She went on to tell us to write our prayer points individually in her Bible. It was an awesome experience for me, as I left there feeling so blessed.

She prayed for us from her heart. In her words when translated,

“I’m not leaving yet, but still, you all will live longer than me. As you came together today, please when I finally leave this world, you all should come when I’m being laid to rest” May our good deeds always be remembered.”

Despite the fact that Daada wasn’t blessed with a child of her own, she was the epitome of what many could refer to as “the Authentic Afrcan Mother” because, she was still very sensitive to understand and give out love to all, and this love was felt by so many people who came close to her and knew her.

Many people who read the story on social media Facebook platform couldn’t hide their emotions as they kept pouring in their love and showering her with prayerful accolades for being a true mother.

Woman Who Gave Birth At 66 ?See Picture Of Her Daughter 17 Years Later

Hello everyone! Today I will tell you about a wonderful brave Romanian woman, Adriana Iliescu. She gave birth to a baby at 66 years old in 2005. She is officially registered as the oldest mother in the world in the Guinness Book of World Records (in the same year a Spanish woman gave birth to twins at 67, so Adriana didn’t hold the record for too long).

Adriana was married only once for four years. At 24, she divorced her husband and has been single for the past 50 years. She claimed that she had always wanted children but never had a partner to father for her child. Additionally, she had to study and work hard because no one supported her.

In 2000, Romanian clinics started offering IVF technology. Thanks to this amazing technology, Adriana got pregnant and gave birth to her first child, Elis

Local mass media claimed the baby was absolutely healthy. Newspapers were screaming about the old mother and so they made the story known all over the world.

Time passed and journalists stopped chasing Adriana around every corner, allowing her spend time with her daughter. The woman lived in a small flat in Bucharest, on a 250 EUR/month pension. She most likely also got some money from mass media as well, for her interviews and stories. That being said, raising her daughter as a single mother has been a challenge economically.

This picture was taken in 2008. Elisa is 3 years old here and she is accompanying her mother to the shop. Adriana is probably the most open old mother we know. Today, we know about 70 year old mothers, but their kids’ lives are kept very privat

Adriana confirms that she is often mistaken for a grandmother, but she doesn’t feel shy about the situation. She is happy and raises her child with love and care.

Time flies and Elisa grows up. Now she’s a teenager and she doesn’t differ from other kids her age. Elisa is a positive and sociable girl.

Now Adriana is 80 and Elisa is 14. We want to wish the old mother lots of health and many years to go. She needs it for raising her daughter!
