Twitter should have office in Nigeria to resolve issues – Governor Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu of Lagos State Governor, says if Twitter had an office in Nigeria, resolving the current ban would have been easier.

Sanwo-olu made the suggestion in an interview with Arise TV on Monday, June 7, 2021.

He noted that he cannot categorically say if the federal government’s action against Twitter is wrong or right because he does not have the same prognosis as the president and commander-in-chief.

The governor also said that the federal government had only suspended Twitter operations in Nigeria, rather than out rightly banning it.

He further suggested that Twitter and the government should come together to resolve the issues rather than allow it to continue to degenerate to the detriment of the economy.

“On both sides, there are issues that can be resolved between Twitter and the Government and I think what they’ve done is not a ban but a suspension like they said, so in the period of suspension let us sit down

“So in the period of suspension, let’s sit down, if we have 40 million users of micro-blogging user and they chose to take their investment to country with five million users, it speaks to the reason why we also need to have that conversation with them so that perhaps if they have an office here things would have been done along quicker and better,” he said.

On June 4, the Nigerian government issued a statement suspending operations of Twitter after the microblogging site deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s ‘civil war’ tweet.

Twitter introduces “strike system” to permanently ban users who spread COVID-19 misinformation

In order to check the spread of fake information about Covid-19 vaccines, Twitter says it will permanently ban anyuser running afoul of its new “strike system” rules.

The micro-blogging platform says it will start labelling misleading tweets about COVID vaccines and ban users who continue to spread such misinformation after the fifth offending tweet.

According to the social media giant, the second and third strikes will each result in the violating account being blocked for 12 hours, AL Jazeera reports.

Twitter in a statement on Monday said “We believe the strike system will help to educate the public on our policies and further reduce the spread of potentially harmful and misleading information on Twitter,” the San Francisco-based company said in a blog post.

“Particularly for repeated moderate and high-severity violations of our rules.”

“Here are the ways in which the strike system will work

Strike 1 – Twitter users will be notified when a tweet is labelled as misleading or needs to be removed

Strike 2 and 3: Account will be blocked for 12 hours

Strike 4: Account will be sidelined for seven days

Strike 5: Accounts permanently suspended.”

Twitter to charge users for exclusive contents

Microblogging site, Twitter, has announced intent to place charges on exclusive tweets and contents.

The development, which was revealed on Thursday during the company’s annual Analyst Day event, will see users paying for contents on the app after launch.

According to the American social media giant, one such charge is the Super Follows subscription where creators and publishers can monetise exclusive tweets and contents via Twitter.

Explaining the terms, Twitter further noted that the new offering would be designed in such a way that only subscribed users can gain access to exclusive content, deals and discounts, community access, amongst other offering plans in the pipeline.

Analysts have speculated that while this development has been presented as a system and service upgrade, it boarders more on measures to help Twitter scale up on revenue as it has recorded new lows in recent financial sheets.

During the annual event, the company had hinted on the need for the company to double total annual revenue in coming years, citing how the coming can move from $3.7 billion in 2020 to $7.5 billion or more in 2023.

Speaking, tentatively, on the idea of the charge, the social media company proposed a subscription fee of $4.99 per month (roughly #2000 ) for the Super Follows subscription.
