Mob tortures two elderly men to death in Benue over allegation of killing young man through witchcraft

The young man Nongobo who recently completed his secondary education was reportedly rushed to the village hospital where the medics confirmed him dead.

When the news of the young school leaver broke in his community, some youths allegedly mobilised themselves to the home of the two elderly men, who are relatives of the dead boy and accused them of killing him through witchcraft.

“And that was how they started beating and cutting the two elderly men with cutlasses and axes. They even tied a rope around their necks and dragged them until they died,” the source narrated.

“The victims of the jungle justice kept screaming in their native Tiv dialect that they didn’t have a hand in the young man’s death but the mob didn’t listen to them.

“Even some members of the tortured victims’ families including their children tried to rescue them while they were being unjustly treated to various dehumanisation but their attempts were resisted.

“The men eventually died and the mob ensured that no one went close to their dead bodies which were left unattended until the next day that their corpses were taken to the morgue.”

Spokesperson of the State Police Command, SP Catherine Anene, who confirmed the incident, said that the suspects are currently on the run. “That incident is confirmed.

Suspects are on the run. The boy died mysteriously on the farm so some youths said it was his father and the uncle that killed him through witchcraft,” the PPRO said.

“They beat up these two men until they died alleging that they killed the boy through witchcraft. It has become an issue in Benue.

The people need to be enlightened. In the villages, those things happen and we have been talking to them and have charged so many people to court.

“I’m trying to do a programme about that on radio and television so that they will get to know more; that there is room for investigating such cases and establishing the cause of death not for them to just assume that it is witchcraft.

There are lots of factors which could lead to deaths; we have such cases of ‘witchcraft allegations’ in court.” she added.

NDLEA releases photo of billionaire drug baron who used his Lagos mansion to store 13 million tramadol pills

The Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency has released a photo of the billionaire drug baron who used his Lagos mansion to store 13 million tramadol pills.

In a statement shared by the agency’s spokesperson Femi Babafemi, it was disclosed that the drug had a street value of N8.8billion.

The drug baron identified as Ugochukwu Nsofor Chukwukadibia, is the Chairman of Autonation Motors Ltd and he was arrested barely two months after NDLEA uncovered a methamphetamine clandestine laboratory in the residence of another drug kingpin in the estate, Chris Emeka Nzewi.

The statement read;

No less than Thirteen Million, Four Hundred and Fifty One Thousand, Four Hundred and Sixty Six (13,451,466) pills of Tramadol 225mg worth Eight Billion Eight Hundred and Sixty Million Naira (N8,860,000,000) in street value have been recovered by operatives of the National Drug Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, from one of the mansions of a billionaire drug baron, Ugochukwu Nsofor Chukwukadibia, in the highbrow residential estate, Victoria Garden City, Lekki area of Lagos.

The arrest of Ugochukwu who is the Chairman of Autonation Motors Ltd is coming barely two months after NDLEA uncovered a methamphetamine clandestine laboratory in the residence of another drug kingpin in the estate, Chris Emeka Nzewi, who was arrested on Saturday 30th July along with a chemist, Sunday Ukah, who cooked the illicit drug for him.

At least, 258.74 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and various precursor chemicals used for the production of the toxic drug were recovered from Nzewis home during his arrest.

Following credible intelligence, NDLEA operatives on Friday 30th September stormed the Plot A45 Road 2 home of the 52-year-old billionaire drug kingpin.

A search of the expansive mansion led to the discovery of 443 cartons of Tramadol Hydrochloride 225mg, which contains 13, 451, 466 pills of the drug while some cartons were already burnt in a fire incident in the house same day.

Before his arrest, Ugochukwu who hails from Ihiala local government area of Anambra state has been on the Agencys watch list as one of those behind the tramadol drug cartel in Nigeria.

Preliminary investigation shows that he has about six mansions within the VGC, one of which he uses to warehouse the tramadol consignment, while he lives in the one at Plot Z-130 Road 67 and another as his office.

Five exotic vehicles have also been located in two of his mansions, out of which two SUVs including a bullet jeep have been successfully removed to the Agencys facility.Reacting to the latest drug haul, Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) commended the officers and men involved in the operation for their diligence while also appreciating Nigerians for supporting the Agency in its arduous task of ridding the country of the menace of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

Nigerian woman arrested with cocaine worth over N3m nine months after arriving India for her brother’s cancer treatment

A 30-year-old Nigerian woman, Nwafor Onyinye Monica, was arrested with cocaine worth 5.75 lakh in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Inida. Okafor, who came to India nine months ago for her brother’s cancer treatment, was arrested on Saturday, October 1, 2022, near Kanathur toll gate in an affluent neighbourhood off East Coast Road (ECR).

The police also recovered Rs 2.6 lakh cash from her and seized her mobile phone. According to police, a team led by inspector Saravanan of Pallikaranai PEW (Prohibition and Enforcement Wing), one of three formed by the Tambaram City police to crack down on peddling of drugs in their jurisdiction, was keeping vigil along ECR and OMR based on a tip when they noticed the woman getting off an autorickshaw and handing over a small parcel to another person.

When she was intercepted and gave contradictory answers during questioning, she was detained and a search of her baggage found 72 small packets of cocaine.

Police said investigations revealed that after her brother went back to Nigeria following his cancer treatment, Onyinye took an apartment at a complex in Velachery for rent and began peddling narcotic drugs including cocaine.

A questioning of some of her neighbours at the complex showed that several people visited her flat at odd hours including late at night.

“She procured cocaine from another Nigerian national in Mumbai, paying 2,000 for a gram and selling it for 5,000,” said an investigating officer, based on the woman’s confession statement.

Police are probing if she was part of a huge network of cocaine smugglers.

The woman was produced before a magistrate who sent her to jail.

FG warns ASUU against disobeying court’s order

The Federal government through the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has warned the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) against disobeying the court’s order on its eight-month strike.

Justice Polycarp Hamman of the National Industrial Court in September ordered the varsity lecturers to suspend their strike and return to classrooms but ASUU appealed the ruling.

The Federal Government then directed the Vice-Chancellors and Pro-Chancellors of universities to reopen the institutions in a bid to force the varsity lecturers to return to work.Days later, the FG withdrew the directive.

In a statement issued on Sunday, October 2 by the Labour ministry’s Deputy Director Press and Public Relations, Olajide Oshundun, Ngige accused the leadership of ASUU of misinforming and misleading its members and warned on the consequences of disobeying court’s order.

He, therefore, called on the union to respect the court’s order and return to classrooms while negotiations are concluded .

Ngige said:

“The union is dishonest and misleading its members and the general public, that it has filed an appeal as well as a stay of execution of the order of National Industrial Court on September 21, 2022, though it has none of this.

“Rather, ASUU only filed an application for permission to appeal the order. It also attached to the application, a proposed notice of appeal which it intends to file if the leave to appeal is granted. The application for a stay of execution as of this moment has not even been listed for hearing. Where is ASUU coming from?

“It is therefore contemptuous, dishonest and misleading for the union to tell its members that it has not only appealed the interlocutory injunction by the National Industrial Court, directing it to call off the strike and return to work but that it also has a stay of execution.

APC’s Keyamo, PDP’s Omokri react to Obidients’ rallies

Former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, has said that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has disrupted the political space in the country.

Omokri, a staunch supporter of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, stated this late Saturday in reaction to the rallies held across the country by the supporters of Obi for the 2023 presidential election.

Describing the rallies as great achievements, he noted that the Obidient movement should not be disregarded by anyone who was politically conscious.

“The Obidient rallies at Festac and Amuwo were amazing. They are great achievements. Anyone who tries to belittle them is not politically astute. While Obi will not win in 2023, he has successfully disrupted politics in Nigeria.

Well done Obi! Well done Obidients!”, he tweeted.

However, in an earlier tweet, Omokri had said that the rallies were just a show of force by southeastern traders who closed down their shops.

“These so called ‘one million man marches’ are mostly a gathering of traders in various Nigerian towns and cities, who close down their markets (that are heavily dominated by people of southeastern origin), to do what in the military is called a show of force,” he tweeted.

The Spokesman for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, and Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has also reacted to the rallies by the Obidients on Saturday.

Mocking the supporters of Obi, Keyamo said the rallying Obidients were not more than a thousand people who were not more than the electorate needed at two polling units.

“The aerial shots are the best. Now, look at this: at best the ‘crowd’ here is not more than a thousand people which is approximately just two polling units,” he quote-tweeted a video from one of the rallies.

UAD claims ASUU strike may work against Tinubu

The United Action for Democracy has said the ongoing strike will make a large number of Nigerian youths not to vote for the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Speaking in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, the South-South Coordinator of the group, Enefa Georgewill, stated that the Buhari-led government had reduced the chances of the APC at the 2023 polls.

He stated that the ceaseless strike by various academic bodies in the country would lead to a mutiny against the party.

He said the APC-led government had not delivered on its promises to alleviate poverty and give the average Nigerian a better life, adding that Nigerians were becoming poorer.

“In terms of livelihood, people’s access to livelihood has further reduced in terms of naira to dollar.

As we speak, it is around N700 to a dollar and of course, this government met it less than N200 and it further goes to say that Nigerians are becoming poorer, and in terms of food, basic items such as rice, the price has skyrocketed.

He also expressed concern over the declining rate of electricity supply across the country.

“In terms of electricity that should help the informal sector and even the main sector to generate power to do some of the basic things, it’s nothing to write home about.

“Nigerians use other power sources like generators, and fuel that is supposed to serve the generator has moved from N55 to between N175 and N180 per litre.He stressed that no sensible Nigerian would vote for a political party that had “brought pain, backwardness and hunger to Nigerians”.

Reacting, the Director General, Asiwaju Tinubu Presidential Campaign Organisation, Adebayo Shittu, said the APC flag bearer would build on the development on the ground to make life better for Nigerians.

He stressed that Buhari was not to be blamed for the high cost of food items, adding that the President supported farmers and market women with needed funds.

He said,

“What is the failure of Buhari in prices of commodities that has skyrocketed? Is Buhari supposed to impose price control on commodities as well as many other items?

“Buhari can’t play God by rectifying the behaviour of Nigerians. So, this is the Nigeria factor for most of the things that have happened because Nigerians are always taking advantage of things by unduly increasing prices on local commodities.

Police arrest ”one chance” gang

Officers of the Ojodu Division of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested three members of a syndicate that specializes in duping unsuspecting passengers.

The have been identified as Abiodun Bamidele ‘m’ aged 48, Olumide Faleye ‘m’ aged 45 and Toyin Adekoya ‘f’ aged 49.

The suspects were arrested at about 10.30hrs on Friday, September 23, 2022, at Omole Estate Phase 1 after their victim raised the alarm.

The suspects while operating in a Toyota Camry car, with registration number KSF 608 GH, would disguise as driver and passengers, pick unsuspecting passengers, and start discussions about some dollars purportedly kept in the boot.

Confirming their arrest, the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said police investigation reveals that the gang started this crime in January. He said the suspects have since been arraigned.

Two dead, four injured in Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway accident

Two persons were confirmed dead while four others sustained injuries in an accident involving a Nissan Cabster and a Mack truck at Iyana Egbado, Itori on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on Saturday.

The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogun, Mr Ahmed Umar, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta.Umar noted that the crash occurred at 6:00 a.m and it involved a Cabster marked KTU 142 XH and a truck with registration number T-12736 LA.

The sector commander explained that the Nissan vehicle rammed into the stationary truck which had a flat tyre.

He added that a total of seven men were involved in the accident, of which four were injured, two dead while one person was unhurt.

Umar said the deceased persons and injured victims were taken to General Hospital, Ifo for appropriate attention.

The sector commander commiserated with the family of the crash victims and enjoined them to contact FRSC Itori command for more information about the crash.

He advised motorists to avoid indiscriminate parking of vehicles by the roadside, adding that “If there’s a breakdown, proper placement of road signs should be put in order to alert oncoming vehicles.” (NAN).

President Muhammadu Buhari delivered a Nationwide broadcast this morning to commemorate the 62nd Independence day celebration of the country.

During his speech, President Buhari urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU to call off its over seven-month industrial strike and return to the classrooms.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14, 2022 over contending issues including unpaid allowances and poor welfare.

“I am using this Independence Day celebration to reiterate my call for the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities to return to the classroom while assuring them to deal with their contending issues within the limit of the scarce resources,” the President said in his broadcast.

The President also said he shared the pains Nigerians are going through and assured them that his administration is doing all possible to alleviate the situation.

No protest is allowed at Lekki tollgate – Lagos police

The Lagos state police command has warned against any form at Lekki Toll Gate.

In a statement released on Friday September 30 by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command stated that while it is not averse to the peoples’ right to freedom of assembly and association, and expression, it would equally live up to its mandate of ensuring that no person or group of persons infringe on the fundamental human rights of others, especially the rights to freedom of movement and right to dignity of human persons, especially under the guise of rally or procession.

The statement read;

“It has become imperative to reemphasise that no form of rally whatsoever will be allowed at the Lekki Toll gate on October 1, 2022.

“This emphasis has become necessary to enlighten Nigerians that might be misled into converging at the toll gate.

A court of competent jurisdiction has ruled that no person is allowed to converge at the Lekki Toll gate for whatever reason.

“In conformity with its mandate to protect life and property, the Lagos State Police Command under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, will leave no stone unturned in ensuring total compliance with the court order and an emplacement of adequate security in the state.

“The warning therefore goes that anyone found flouting the court order or infringing on the rights of other Nigerians will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

“Meanwhile, the CP enjoins all peace loving persons to go about their lawful duties without fear of harassment or intimidation, reiterating that adequate security assets have been strategically deployed to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians at designated rally venues and across the state at large.”

No going back on community policing – IGP

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba has said they would be going ahead with the community policing system arrangements aimed at checkmating various crimes at local levels.

In his speech at the 11th edition of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) forum in Abuja on Thursday September 29, Usman said the force had upgraded its Police Training curriculum to cater for knowledge that will be practically used in carrying out responsibilities in line with the principle of Community-oriented policing. He said;

“Over the years, crimes and criminality have adopted a fluid nature. There was a time when society and members of the community, on their own volition, would arrest criminals in their locales and hand them over to the Police for onward prosecution and sanctions.

“However, with time, society became more and more complicit in covering up criminals amongst them and even offering protection for them against the law enforcers.

“This reality created an urgent need to domesticate the principles of modern policing as advocated for by the revered Sir Robert Peel as early as 1829.”

The IGP who was represented by a Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Force Criminal Investigation Department, DIG Johnson Kokumo, added that the force would make active various platforms such as the Public Complaint Bureau (PCB), the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) which has the capacity to receive complaints online via social media platforms that can be used for complaints, among others.

He said this would build police/citizen trust which is a fundamental basis for effective Community Policing.

16-year-old girl takes own life after being asked to shave her hair as punishment

A 16-year-old student at Langalanga Secondary School in Nakuru, Kenya reportedly committed suicide after a teacher asked her to shave her hair.

She was reportedly asked to shave her hair as punishment for allegedly unbraiding her hair on the closing day of the second term in mid-September.

The teenager identified as Shamamcy Wanjiru committed suicide on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at her family house in Kaloleni.

Her relative told the media;

“She came home on Tuesday and informed me that their class teacher had asked her to be accompanied by her parents.

On Wednesday, we went to school and the teacher said she has to shave her hair. She got very furious about it.”

According to the family, Wanjiru left an apology letter to the said teacher before hanging herself.
