Tinubu returns from UK, prepares for campaigns

There was jubilation in the camp of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Thursday when he returned to the country.

While he was aware, reports were suggesting that Tinubu was ill and could be receiving medical attention in London.

The situation forced the candidate and his handlers to release a series of photographs and videos to dispel the rumour of his ill health.

Elated party chiefs and loyalists were at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Thursday to receive Tinubu.

They were led by his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima; and a former APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, among others.

It was learnt that Tinubu will immediately engage in a series of political consultations.

The former Lagos State governor is expected to host members of his Presidential Campaign Council, Progressive Governors Forum and the National Working Committee of the APC in separate meetings to discuss the contentious campaign list.

A former Minister of Communications and Director General of the Asiwaju Tinubu-Shettima Coalition for Good Governance, Adebayo Shittu, told The PUNCH that the wild jubilation that greeted Tinubu’s arrival was enough to make some people cover their faces in shame.

“They probably thought he won’t return to the country. I told you earlier he is coming today, didn’t I?

“Let us even assume he went for medical treatment abroad, should that be an issue? His fitness video and the eventual return have put an end to all their speculations,” he said.

The Director of Media and Publicity for the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Bayo Onanuga, had earlier told The PUNCH that the previous October 10 selected as the date for the launch of the campaign was no longer feasible.

He said,

“Oct 10 date is not certain for the launch of our campaign. It was the date we chose before. It is tentative and not cast in stone.”

When asked about his itinerary, Onanuga said though Tinubu would be busy after his return from London, he is not aware of any nocturnal meeting his principal might be having last night.

Another member of the PCC media team, Biodun Ajiboye, told our correspondent that he didn’t understand what the euphoria and fixation that greeted the candidate’s arrival were about. “Are they expecting Asiwaju won’t return before?” he asked.

He however acknowledged that being the workaholic that he is, Tinubu would hit the ground running.“He is going to start his usual busy schedule from this night.

Naturally, as the presidential candidate of Africa’s largest political party, he should be busy. What do you think? “He has missed a few days of work that he is eager to recover. So I don’t think it is anything to worry about,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has promised that Tinubu will tackle the challenges faced by youths, women and other vulnerable people in society.

The governor stated this on Thursday during an event organised by the Asiwaju Grassroots Talk in Oregun, Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu said his endorsement of the AGT advocacy project stemmed from the proven ability of the group to influence and mobilise real voters, noting that AGT had a strong presence across communities in the state.

He said,

“We are ready to take the gospel out to the electorate and canvass for their support for the Tinubu presidency. Asiwaju has verifiable track records in good governance and service delivery, which canvassers can use to engage and win the support of potential voters.

“We must talk about the transformative leadership, progressive ideals, and vision possessed by Asiwaju to take this country to another level of meaningful development.

“Tinubu is coming to bring hope, bring about change that will translate to real prosperity.” He is coming to address the challenges facing the youth, women, and the vulnerable in our country.

“His programmes will touch the lives of traders, artisans, and those in search of legitimate means of livelihood.

It is because of our strong belief in Asiwaju’s leadership that we are all coming together to endorse this grassroots movement to ensure Lagos is delivered for APC.”

He also faulted the Minister for registering two breakout factions of ASUU and also trying to proscribe ASUU.

Jega said;

“Unfortunately, right now, the minister of labour is not helping matters. He has turned this into a personal quarrel between him and the minister of education on one hand and between himself and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on the other.

“While many other people are trying to find a way of addressing this situation so that students can go back to school and ASUU can go back to work, he is busy creating challenges.

“He now took the matter to the industrial court, now today, he now registered two unions and he is trying to proscribe ASUU.

“If this is allowed by this government, I think this is a recipe for disaster and it may really create more problems than it can solve on this matter of strike in the universities.”

Court clears ex-EFCC boss Ibrahim Magu and Prophet Omale of money laundering charges

Justice Halilu Yusuf of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has exonerated the former acting chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu and Prophet Emmanuel Omale of the Divine Hand of God Prophetic Ministry of N573million Money laundering claims.

Recall that the Justice Isa Salami-led presidential investigation panel that investigated Magu after he was asked to step aside, claimed in its report that an investigation by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU, revealed that the ex-EFCC boss paid N573million into Omale’s church’s account and the said money was used to purchase a property in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, UAE.

Omale had approached the court to challenge the claim. In the ruling delivered today October 5, Justice Halilu noted that the evidence before the court showed that Omale’s bank admitted error in its report to the NFIU, of entries in the Divine hand of God Prophetic ministries account.

The judge further held that the bank claimed that the purported N573 million was wrongly reflected as a credit entry in Divine Hand of God Prophetic Ministry’s account by its reporting system, which it recently upgraded.

Justice Halilu noted that the bank admitted the error, which occasioned incalculable damage to the reputation of Pastor Omale, his wife and their church both within and outside the country.

The judge further awarded the sum of N540 million Naira as damages in favour of the church.

Fintechs are disrupting banking sector operations – CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele

Governor Godwin Emefiele has said that financial technology (fintech) companies are disrupting operations of the banking sector.

Emefiele disclosed this at the International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI) Africa Regional Committee (ARC) technical assistance workshop in Abuja on Tuesday October 4.

The CBN governor who stated that there is urgent need for the banking industry regulators to gird their loins, described the developments as “very disturbing”, adding that it has continued to disrupt traditional ways of offering financial services in the banking landscape.

Emefiele also said that Fintechs who want to be deposit-taking institutions should come forward with N25 billion and become a bank.

He said;

“We will ensure that we can put in place strong regulatory framework and practices that should help nip in the bud, the unfortunate incident that may happen as we try to allow the growth of fintechs in Nigeria.

“Fintechs who want to be deposit-taking institutions should come forward and become a bank, bring N25 billion and be a bank.

“Our deposit insurance system (DIS), as a component of the financial safety-net arrangement, is the risk-minimiser model and has been very effective in the discharge of its mandate.

The CBN and NDIC represent key components of Nigeria’s financial safety-net arrangement.

“That partly explains why we have been able to successfully resolve the series of financial crises that confronted us with satisfying results.

“It is instructive to mention that the CBN and NDIC have been able to deal with the emerging crisis in the nation’s banking system.

The 2009 banking crisis, 2004 banking consolidation exercise and their subsequent resolutions, provided a reference point of the benefit for effective collaboration between the central bank and deposit insurer.”

Nigeria’s economic growth to slow down next year – World Bank

Nigeria’s economic growth will slow down next year, a World Bank report said.

According to the report released in Washington yesterday, October 4, and tagged Africa’s Pulse, the growth will be down from 3.3 per cent to 3.2 per cent.

World Bank blamed the development on inflationary pressures. The report reads:

“The Nigerian economy is projected to slow in 2023, down to 3.2 per cent (from 3.3 per cent) and persist at this level the following year.

“Growth will be supported mainly by the rebound in private consumption prompted mostly by accommodative monetary policy as inflationary pressures subside.

“Private consumption expenditure is forecast to decrease this year and grow next year. This performance will likely continue in 2024.

“On the production side, growth in 2023 will be supported by industry (with growth of 5.1 per cent) with the mega-refinery project.”

The report added that the South African economy will weaken further because of structural constraints.

It said global headwinds are slowing Africa’s economic growth with countries contending with rising inflation.

It added that high interest rates and debt are forcing African governments to make difficult choices to protect people’s jobs, purchasing power and development gains.
