Sanwo-Olu announces plan to increase salary of Lagos civil servants

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that his administration is working to increase the salaries of workers in the state civil service.

Sanwo-Olu made this known on Tuesday, October 4, while addressing the workers at the state secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.

He said:

“I have looked around and I know that as a country, there is pressure.

I know that, as a country, there is a high level of inflation, but we are determined to cushion the effects on our workers and residents.

“At our cabinet meeting, I instructed the head of service office and the ministry of staff training, and pensions to start work on how we are going to increase the entire salary of our public servants.” He continued:

“We are capable of doing this. Lagos leads while others follow in Nigeria. In salary increment, we are leading again.

“We are going to reflect the popular ‘Buga’ slogan in the payment of salaries. We are not going to wait for the Federal Government’s minimum wage increase.

“We have commenced the process. I can assure that by early next year it will be ready for implementation.

“We don’t want to wait for workers’ unions to hold us to ransom before we do the needful.”

The governor also promised to pay all the outstanding backlog of pensions to workers by the end of October. Sanwo-Olu said:

“I want to reassure you that all the few outstanding backlogs of pensions will be sorted out this week and payment by the end of October.

Absence of interpreter stalls trial of Chinese man who allegedly killed Nigerian girlfriend in Kano

A Kano High Court number 17 sitting at Miller road has adjourned the hearing of Chinese national, Geng Quangrong, accused of killing his Nigerian lover, Ummukulsum Sani Buhari, over absence of interpreter.

Mr Quandong, 47, allegedly murdered Ummukulsum, 23, at Janbalu quarters for allegedly refusing his hand in marriage.

At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, Muhammad Dan’azumi, the defence counsel, notified the court that an interpreter had not been provided for the accused.

The case, which was originally slated to commence last week Monday, was adjourned to Tuesday due to a lack of legal representation for Mr Quandong.

Initially, the police in Kano, North-west Nigeria, on 21 September, arraigned Mr Quandong before a magistrates court at Zangeru road in Kano.

At the hearing, Mr Quandong addressed the court in Chinese, which made it difficult for the parties involved including the magistrate to comprehend the message.

The Magistrate, Justice Sunusi Ado Ma’aji adjourned the case to 27 October, with the hope that an interpreter would have been found to explain the charges to Mr Quandong in Chinese.

Speaking shortly, Kano state Attorney General and commissioner of justice, M, A Lawan said, the case could not be heard as the accused person has the constitutional right to be communicated to in the language he understands.

“The issue of interpreter was raised which is a constitutional issue and after the last adjournment, we wrote a letter to the Chinese embassy requesting for interpreter because we expected this to happen and I am sure they will do that.

That is why we adjourned the matter to at least three weeks. Ordinarily, it’s supposed to be a week.” he said.

Management of Nigeria warns against fake Nigeria Air recruitment website

Management of Nigeria Air Limited on Tuesday described the website and links used for recruitment advertisements and announcements by unscrupulous members of the public claiming to be agents or staff of Nigeria Air as ‘fake.’

In a statement, the Special Assistant (Public Affairs) to the Minister of Aviation, James Odaudu, advised Nigerians to disregard such notifications or invitations as nothing of such exercise is currently ongoing.

He, however, advised those who applied for the earlier officially advertised positions to get authenticated information from the official website: www.nigeriaair.world”.

The statement read,”

The attention of the Management of Nigeria Air Limited has been drawn to some recruitment advertisements and announcements by certain unscrupulous elements claiming to be agents or staff of the upcoming airline.

“The so-called agents have created a host of fake websites and links supposedly for the submission of applications by unsuspecting members of the public.

“We wish to inform the general public, especially those who have applied for the earlier officially advertised positions, that no recruitment interviews or tests have been scheduled.

All such announcements or invitations for such should be disregarded as they are the handiwork of fraudsters and scammers.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the official website is www.nigeriaair.world, and only those pre-qualified as meeting the B737 requirements will be contacted by the management of Nigeria Air Limited individually, and certainly not by public announcements.

“All those concerned are therefore advised to ignore such announcements or invitations, as responding to, or dealing with them in any way, will be at their own risk.

“Management appreciates the unprecedented level of interest shown by Nigerians in the airline which has resulted in the receipt of over 20,000 applications for positions in the organisation so far and wishes to state that the recruitment process for other positions will begin in due course.”
