Facebook and Instagram made missteps on Nigeria’s EndSARS protest while Twitter boosted it

The two and a half week-long #EndSARS protests in Nigeria against police brutality has garnered attention and raised awareness far beyond the country’s borders thanks to a savvy well-planned out campaign, boosted by Nigerian and global celebrities. But none of this would have been possible without the sheer reach and immediacy of major social media platforms.

The peaceful protest started online using the #EndSars hashtag before spreading quickly to thousands of people joining protests on the streets of Nigeria’s big cities and then London, Toronto, Houston, and elsewhere, again thanks to social media.

But all social media is not created equal.

The campaign to shut down controversial and brutal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) thrived on Twitter in particular and a series of significant EndSARS hashtags trended globally and had millions of retweets. Even Twitter’s enigmatic founder Jack Dorsey joined young Nigerians in encouraging the global Twitter community to donate to the protest organizers using bitcoin.

Twitter gave the EndSARS hashtag an official emoji and verified the Twitter accounts of several users at the forefront of the protest. This act of support contributed to the credibility of the protest and boosted the protest both online and offline.

But even as the hashtag picked up steam and shared by the likes of Kanye West and Rihanna, over on Facebook and Instagram some of the posts with the #EndSARS hashtag was being incorrectly labeled as “fake news.”

To make things worse, these “fake news” labels by Facebook and Instagram inadvertently helped to promote a self-serving anti-fake news campaign by the Nigerian Army, which has come under intense scrutiny after men in military uniforms opened fire on unarmed peaceful protestors at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos on Tuesday. The Nigerian Army has claimed its soldiers were not involved in what some have labeled a “massacre” despite plenty of video evidence. Many Nigerians now perceive its moves as government propaganda to discredit the #EndSARS protest.

The Nigerian Army had during the EndSARS protest launched “Operation Crocodile Smile” which it claimed is cyber warfare that includes identifying and countering fake news against the Nigerian government. When the Army was accused of shooting at protesters at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos three days ago, they labeled social media and news media reports of these claims as fake news. This is despite circulations of pictures, videos, and eyewitness reports backing claims of soldiers shooting at the protesters.

Instagram and Facebook platforms, which are both owned by Facebook Inc, both flagged posts containing words such as “#EndSARS” and “Pray for Nigeria” and of photos of a blood-stained Nigerian flag and a burning candle as fake news, and users were directed to an unrelated fact check article for explanations.

“It seems clear the social media platform’s algorithms are completely falling to differentiate between genuine posts and fake news, causing harm to users and serving as evidence that those algorithms simply are not up to the job of fact-checking when large scale breaking news event occurs,” explained Ray Walsh, a digital privacy analyst at ProPrivacy based in the UK.

To be clear, there have been dozens of supposedly pro-EndSARS posts and photos shared on the most popular social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp (also owned by Facebook) which have been flagged as false or as misleading by the protest organizers themselves in a bid to avoid the movement’s credibility being tarnished. The open nature of social media means it is difficult to control or manage the sources of information whether it is legitimate or otherwise.

“Instagram and Facebook must make every effort to ensure that genuine posts containing important information about the government’s actions are not being unfairly flagged as fake news,” says Walsh.

Though Instagram’s public relations team has since released a statement of apology on Twitter admitting it incorrectly flag content supporting #EndSARS and marking them as false. It says the issue has now been resolved, but supporters of the protest have slammed Facebook for actively helping the Nigerian government refute allegations about the shooting.

It’s just the latest example of the challenge social media’s executives face in how to make decisions when it comes to preventing the spread of misleading information. Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg, in particular, is under scrutiny and pressure in the run-up to the US elections on Nov. 3. Twitter has run into major controversy in the US by attempting to block users sharing a news story which it claimed was misleading and it has taken to labeling tweets with fact-check tags.

In Nigeria, Dorsey has even been accusing of inciting violence by actively supporting the funding of the mostly peaceful #EndSARS protests. Adamu Garba, a former presidential candidate tweeted that he has charged Dorsey to a Nigerian court and he is demanding a compensation of $1 billion to be paid to the Nigerian government for the loss of lives, properties & convenience during the EndSARS protest. Garba, a controversial Twitter user is also demanding that a court order is given to stop Twitter from operating in Nigeria.

#EndSARS: Fufeyin seeks prayers against civil war

A cleric, Prophet Jeremiah Fufeyin, has called on Nigerians to pray against civil war following violence that trailed the #ENDSARS protests.

In a statement on Thursday, the Prophet said Nigerians must intensify prayers, adding that keeping quiet over the situation spells doom.

Warning Nigerians, he said: “Don’t keep quiet. Things are happening in uncontrollable manner. If you think the things that are happening in Edo, Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Ibadan wouldn’t affect you, you may be wrong.”

According to him, it was high time the crises stopped and the church would be strategic in helping to tame the tide.

Speaking during a Mountain service in Warri, Delta in June, the billionaire prophet had stated the country was at the verge of collapse.

“Let us pray for our country Nigeria. There are different things that are about to happen. The country is shaking. Everybody is talking about the story, even small children. Some people will say how did these things come about, other would say God was doing it.

“Let us pray for Nigeria, something that I am seeing, I have never seen before. The things that are about to happen, if it is good for the country it should manifest to reality but if it is bad, let it be cancelled.

“As a prophet, what is about to happen, every household, every media, news houses will carry it. Let us pray that is red light. There is struggle. I can’t bare it, I can’t stand it, I don’t know whether it is truth or not,” Fufeyin had prophesied.

In August, Fufeyin said at a church service in Warri emphasised on the needs for prayers, stating they may be civil war in Nigeria.

“Let us pray for our country Nigeria. Let us come together and pray for Nigeria. I am seeing war, civil war, if the country did not take time, if we are not prayerful, people are planning, this is called war,” Fufeyin noted.

BREAKING: Hoodlums burst into private warehouse, loot electronics, valuable goods

There is an ongoing looting at a warehouse at MDS, Old garage, Osogbo by hoodlums on Friday.

DAILY POST gathered that some individuals identified the MDS warehouse as some of the places where COVID-19 palliative was being stored in the state capital.

But military personnel had taken over the facility since around 2:30 pm.

Hundreds of residents gathered at the Old Garage waiting to loot the store.

Consequently, some hoodlums quickly identified another store and carted away some electronics, such as television, radio and oil.

Earlier on Friday, DAILY POST reported that rampaging youths discovered a warehouse where COVID-19 palliatives were hidden in Ede.

Some military personnel later stopped the hoodlums and recovered some goods.

Lagosians live in fear as touts take over unsecured city

The curfew declared by the Lagos State Government may have exposed the residents to the most dangerous dimension of insecurity in recent times as touts have taken over lonely roads and major streets.

The Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had on Monday imposed a 24-hour curfew in the state following heightened tension over #EndSARS protests. On Tuesday, the curfew was extended by three days notwithstanding the obvious inability of the government to enforce it and provide security for essential services professionals.

On Wednesday, hoodlums hijacked the protests amid outrage over the Lekki tollgate shootings on Tuesday night, destroying property in different parts of the metropolis.

Touts also took advantage of the relapsed security to block roads and lonely streets, compelling motorists to exchange money for a pass.

Yesterday, the situation deteriorated. The number of blockages in different parts of the states had multiplied. In some areas, roadblocks were mounted at almost every 10meters apart while the arm-wielding youths forced motorists to pay ‘tolls’ at every point.

For instance, on the popular Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, there were at least 50 blockages between Oshodi and Five Star bus stop. Each of the points were manned by three to seven youths armed with sticks, cutlasses and other weapons.

The entire stretch of the Lagosians live in fear as touts take over the unsecured city Murtala Mohammed International Airport Road and adjoining roads were taken over by toll-collecting barriers. The condition at Oshodi axis was not remarkably different from that of Anthony, Ikorodu, Ketu, Ogba, Surulere, Obalende, Lekki, Ijaiye, Yaba, Ikeja, Mushin, Epe and other parts of the state.

Individuals on emergency and essential services faced herculean tasks moving freely in the state, a situation that may have compounded the woes of residents. When approached, the hoodlums claim they are not robbing banks and the only way to get money to feed is to make the roadblocks just like the police and collect tokens from motorists.

A victim of the extortion told The Guardian that he spent about N2,000 from Ikorodu to Oshodi yesterday settling touts who at some point threatened to damage his vehicles should he fail to comply.

“I showed them my ID at one of the locations but they told me they did not give any damn as even officials of the armed forces also ‘settled’ before they were allowed to pass,” said the resident, who lamented that he would have to sleep in the office for fear that then HOODLUMS yesterday invaded a warehouse where COVID-19 palliatives were stored at Mazamaza community in Lagos State.

The community is located in the Oriade Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of the state.

Viral video footages circulating on social media showed the looters, entering the warehouse and looting the COVID-19 palliative.

The warehouse is located on Benster Crescent, popularly called Monkey Village.

The looting started as early as 8:00 a.m.

It was gathered that the hoodlums also set a bonfire at a junction not far from the warehouse. The hoodlums later asked residents in the area to move into the warehouse and pick some palliative.

One of the residents, Sherif Olaiya, said: “We heard sounds of gunshots.

The hoodlums attacked a place where COVID-19 palliatives were stored. They then asked residents to pick the palliatives.”

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has condemned the vandalisation of the warehouse at Mazamaza. In a statement by Abisola Olusanya, acting Commissioner for Agriculture, the government said the warehouse held the food palliative packages donated to the state government by the Private Sector Coalition against COVID-19 (CACOVID) group.

“The Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had on September 22nd formally taken receipt of the food palliatives from the CACOVID team meant for distribution to indigent persons,” the statement said.

“The government notes that the warehouse in question is not state-owned and its usage was made available to the CaCOVID group. The State Government had been allowed to commence rebagging of food items allotted to it from the quantities meant for South-West states.

“The re-bagging was being done to account for each beneficiary receipt, as was required and monitored by the CACOVID team.

The distribution was ongoing but had to be halted due to protests, before the invasion of the warehouse yesterday.

“For effective distribution of the food palliative, groups such as transport unions, ethnic groups, religious associations, artisans and tradesmen association, market men and women association, People Living with Disabilities, orphanages and old peoples’ homes among others were being used as distribution channels to their members.

“The State Government, however, regrets the invasion of the warehouse and appreciate the support offered by the CACOVID group to the citizenry of Lagos.”

The situation could degenerate at night.

An employee of The Guardian spent N2,500 from Igando to the company’s headquarters at Toyota bus stop on Oshodi-Apapa expressway. In late evenings, the extortionists become more vicious and desperate. For instance, a pedestrian was forced at one of the many barriers at Mafoluku-Oshodi to bail his wedding ring with N2,000.

While a few of the touts persuaded road users to part with some money using different excuses such as raising money to offset hospital bills of their colleagues who were treating injuries sustained during the protests, others were not so persuasive.

They insisted the motorists, who would have been scared of being harmed, pay their way through or reverse.

The boys were also open for online transfer options in situations were their victims claimed they had no cash on them.

One of the touts told The Guardian: “The government has inflicted enormous pains on us. They have finished us; hence we also need to find a way to survive.”

As at press time, there was no form of security cover for residents observing the curfew.

With the entire state at the mercy of hoodlums, there was palpable fear that the situation could assume a more dangerous dimension if nothing urgent was done to contain the rising insecurity.

Theophilus Yakubu, a resident of Epe, who commented via WhatsApp chat, said it was “most unfortunate that a state governor would declare a curfew but has no capacity to enforce it. The touts have started taking the game to even busy areas at Epe as the people are exposed to more danger with the withdrawal of security personnel from the roads.”

As at press time, one could drive the deserted roads for hours without sighting a single law enforcement officer. This has caused fear among those who had important appointments to keep.

Janet Jackson declares support for Nigeria’s ‘brave’ #EndSARS campaigners’

United States music star, Janet Jackson, on Thursday, joined top personalities worldwide who have supported Nigerian #EndSARS campaigners in their bid to end police brutality in the country.

Jackson, who reacted to the shooting of the protesters by the military on her Twitter handle, described the #EndSARS campaigners as “young and brave future leaders.”

She wrote: “To the powerful people of Nigeria, especially to the young, brave, future leaders who have stood fearlessly in the face of corruption and greed, I stand with you.

“For all those who refuse to remain chained to another generation of suffering, I pray to God for your justice and liberation. Enough is truly enough. Nigeria is a land of love, beauty, culture, and pride but those who have chosen to murder and brutalise have brought shame to this great nation.

“Your time is up. Nigeria I pray for you and I love you so much. #EndSARS #LekkiMassacre #EndPoliceBrutality.”

Breaking: Hoodlums Attack TVC

In what looks like a reprisal, hoodlums have attacked TV Continental (TVC), believed to be owned by the national leader of the All Progress Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The attack on the TV station in Lagos may not be unconnected with the killing of peaceful young protesters at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos by soldiers Tuesday night.

A staff of the organisation who pleaded anonimity said, “TVC has been disconnected on DSTV for a while now. Our reporters are trapped. They said Tinubu (allegedly) ordered the soldiers to kill.

“The newsroom is on fire. And we still have people inside trapped. They were updating us 2 minutes ago. Morayo Afolabi Brown has just been attacked. Our colleagues are sniffing smoke already where they are hiding.”

Adamu Garba wants court to ban Twitter from operating in Nigeria

A Nigerian businessman Adamu Garba Tuesday asked a federal high court in Abuja to ban Twitter from operating in any part of the country.

Garba accused the chief executive officer and co-founder of Twitter Jack Dorsey and Twitter International Company of “sponsoring” the #EndSARS protests in Nigeria.

Garba asked the court to give “an order directing the 7th Respondent to stop the operation of Twitter Intl Company in any part of the territory of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“AN ORDER directing the 8th and 9th respondents jointly to pay the applicant the sum of USD 1 Billion as damages.”

Dorsey, Twitter and the EndSARS protesters are named as 8th, 9th and `10th respondents in the suit.

Protests broke out in Nigeria about two weeks ago to demand an end to the activities of the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian police.

The unit was accused of crimes such as extrajudicial killings, kidnapping, extortion and intimidation.

Although police authorities and President Buhari said that a reform of the police would begin in earnest, protesters said similar promises made in the past were empty chatter.

The unit has since been scrapped and a new Special Weapons and Tactics unit established to replace.

The protests have enjoyed the support of local and international sports stars and celebrities.

On October 14, Dorsey tweeted #EndSARS and a link to a Tech Cabal’s article detailing how rogue policemen clamped on Nigeria’s tech community and the website of Feminist Coalition, a group of Nigerian feminists fighting against injustice through peaceful protests, fundraising, and social media organisation.

Garba said such a tweet amounted to sponsoring of the protests.

“You have violated the international principles of nationhood and democracy, by meddling into our local affairs, knowing fully well that these is capable of toppling the democratically elected government of the day, slowing us down from progress on our hard-earned democracy journey,” he tweeted after filing the suit on Tuesday.

End SARS: Crisis as protesters, custom officers killed in Ogun

There was chaos along Owode-Idiroko road in Ogun State on Tuesday, following the reported killing of a protester and an officer of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), DAILY POST reports.

Another officer of the NCS was said to have sustained injuries in the melee.

It was gathered that the crisis was triggered when a bullet allegedly fired by one of the customs officers while chasing suspected smugglers hit a yet-to-be-identified protester and he died immediately.

DAILY POST reported earlier that residents of the border area seized the opportunities provided by the End SARS protest to call for an end to customs killings.

Unfortunately, one of the protesters was killed in a similar situation.

Angered by the ugly incident, the youths reportedly attacked the NCS officers, with sticks, killing one and injuring another as others scampered for safety.

Contacted, the Ogun 1 NCS Area Command Spokesperson, Hammed Oloyede, confirmed the incident to DAILY POST on Tuesday.

However, Oloyede did not agree that the NCS officers killed a protester.

Oloyede told our correspondent that, “It is not a matter of somebody was killed, our officers were attacked by hoodlums. One has been killed, another one sustained gunshot injuries.

“Hoodlums attacked them in their large numbers. The officers did not even go on patrol, they were just at their patrol base observing caution because of the situation in the country.

“They were in camp and the hoodlums just attacked them,” Oloyede stated.

Hoodlums set ablaze another police station in Lagos

Layeni Police Station at Ifelodun Local Council Development Area of Lagos State has been set on fire by suspected hoodlums.

Eyewitnesses confirmed the incident to The PUNCH on Tuesday.

It was also learnt that Pako Police Station is under attack.

Our correspondent also gathered that some hoodlums attacked Ajeromi Police Station but repelled by policemen.

An eyewitness, Ladipo, said at least eight persons were injured.

He said, “The crisis started from Orile Iganmu. People were protesting peacefully and the police shot at them. Later, the boys heard that policemen have killed their people at Iganmu, they also burnt Layeni Police Station.

“There is tension everywhere. We have rushed eight people to the hospital. They were critically injured.”

When contacted on the telephone, the Chief Press Secretary of Ajeromi Ifelodun LCDA, Sheriff Fakunle, said, “Yes, it is on fire. Layeni Police Station has been torched. The incident happened around 11 am.

“At Ajeromi police station, the hoodlums were repelled.”

Hoodlums set Orile police station ablaze, kill policeman

Hoodlums who infilterated #EndSARS protesters threw caution to the winds in Lagos Tuesday, setting ablaze the building of Orile Police Station.

A policeman, who also jumped the fence in order to escape being caught in the inferno, was reported to have landed in the hands of the hoodlums who stabbed him to death.

The modern police station, constructed to the UN model, was built by the Babatunde Raji Fashola’s administration in 2012.

It was gathered that the station was set ablaze by a gang, in protest of alleged high handedness by the Divisional Police Officer.

The hoodlums were said to have invaded the station in their large numbers but were repelled by the few officers that were on duty and locked the gate.

As the protesters retreated, the DPO was said to have hurriedly left the station, abandoning her subordinates to their fate.

According to an eyewitness, the gang immediately regrouped and started hauling the policemen with stones and broken bottles.

The hoodlums reportedly procured fuel, sprinkled it at the backyard of the building and lit it with fire.

As the fire raged, the suspected hoodlums were said to have gathered some empty bottles, filled them with the petroleum products and threw into the inferno to escalate it.

Our correspondent gathered that the policemen trapped in the building shot severally from inside the building to disperse the protesters in order to escape but to no avail.

According to the witness, the arsonists had a field day, as they operated unchallenged by security operatives.

The fire outbreak, which begun around 9.30 am is still raging as at the time of filing the report.

Efforts to get the reaction of the Commissioner of Police Lagos Command Hakeem Odumosu and the police public relations officer SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi proved abortive, as they declined calls put across to them.

#EndSARS: Oyo protesters block Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Scores of youths on Tuesday morning poured out in some areas in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital and blocked the Ojoo end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in continuation of the #EndSARS protests rocking the country.

The expressway was barricaded where those travelling to Oyo town and the northern part of the country would pass to link the Ibadan-Ilorin road.

As early as 8am, our correspondent gathered that the protesters were out barricading roads at various junctions.

The barricade forced some vehicles to turn back and find alternative routes but not quite long, the protesters started blocking all the exit routes.

This caused gridlock and some motorists had to park their vehicles by the roadside out of frustration.

The youths also mounted roadblock in front of the police station in Ojoo in the Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The police had to lock their gate and their patrol vehicles which used to be parked by the roadside were all removed and parked on the premises.

Some armed policemen were, however, were at alert inside the police station but there was no incident as of the time of filing this report.

Also, various junctions were blocked by the protesters on the Ojoo-UI road as the youth continued to chant, ‘EndSARS! No SWAT!’

Important Lessons From #EndSARS Protests By Adewale Adeoye

The protest has been wrongly defined as a youth protest. No, it is a protest by Nigerians irrespective of age. Youths are more because they form the bulk of Nigerian population.

There was no date announced for the protests. It took off like a single match, then it became a box of matches, and then became a huge fire.

Many Nigerians live under the illusion that revolution is not possible. They think Nigerians are docile. That is a lack of a deep sense of history. How wrong. These protests have proved that nothing is permanent but change, including change in human thought processes.

The protest has been wrongly defined as a youth protest. No, it is a protest by Nigerians irrespective of age. Youths are more because they form the bulk of Nigerian population.

Though we all call it #END SARs protest, the demands are far more than that. #ENDSARs is just a slogan for the demand for the transformation of Nigeria from a ghetto society to an egalitarian society. They imposed electricity tariffs, nobody spoke, they increased fuel, nobody spoke. People in power feel they can do anything and get away with it. This is a stupid way to think.

The protests are not concentrated in one place, making it more difficult for the security operatives to isolate and destroy.

In a decent society, the Inspector-General of Police should have resigned.

The protest is not a vote against democracy. Let no mad soldiers think they can be funny. The protest is a vote for the deepening of democracy, the rule of law, against corruption, insensitivity and reckless leadership at all levels including corporate and financial institutions all out to exploit and kill all of us with their anti-people policies.

Just getting out of COVID 19, millions now earn half salary. Millions have been sacked; the government solution was to come up with a fuel electricity hike in the midst of the pains and pangs. Haba!!! Many Nigerians are seeing death lurking around them. This can lead to anything.

The protest is largely by decent people. Let us hope the next protests won’t be by the ‘baddest’ men and women. The choice will be made by the government, either to address the grievances or gloss over it.

If there had been an NLC/TUC rally against fuel and electricity hike last week, these ongoing mass protests would not have taken place. It would have been a case of a massive protest led by labour because this same crowd was gearing up to be part of the Nation-wide protest. Labour did not gauge the desperate mood of the long suffering people of Nigeria. Labour lost this great honour. If any labour leaders try to address the rally, I tell you, they will be mobbed. The beauty would

have been labour leading this protest backed with fundamental demands that could have enhanced greater transformation of Nigeria. That is lost.

These rallies have proved once again that the people are the custodians of power, the power to protest, the power of liberation is in their pockets, not in the hands of any leadership. In our quest for a better society, Nigerians are not the problem, the leadership is, either in government or within the liberation movements including labour. Nigerians can be effectively mobilized with the right people leading them on the route for a better society.

The power of social media in effective mobilisation has been enormous. Some 126 million Nigerians have access to the Internet. Civil society, the media, state and federal government should learn this truth. Those who think Nigerian people are disorganised are mistaken. Every Nigerian is organised in one platform or the other. This rally has further confirmed this reality.

I was in VI and Alausa on Tuesday and at Gbagada today. I see organised groups. We should study these protests and take notes. Knowledge is often learnt every day. The protesters are teaching us new lessons. All over history, the wo(man) on the street has always been a great teacher. Great politicians learn from the actions of the people, their fears and aspirations, to be able to articulate their pangs in a development plan.

Without the traditional progressive movements, listen, Revolution can come in Nigeria. The nature, I don’t know. But it is sheer arrogance to assume that only a revolution led by already known people will be qualitative.

I’m not sure what will be the gains of the protests. I’m only sure the gains will be minimal for many reasons: No organised platform of leadership to negotiate with, no strategic leadership coordination for sustainability, no political platform to transform the energy into the quest for real, democratic society.

However, history has been made. I see more coordinated rallies in the future. I see more trouble. Let the operators of the system think. Let them act. Let them address hunger, poverty, cruelty of police and political leadership and the guzzling of public funds while millions of people live in misery. But will they ever learn?
