“Foreign holidays and Travels abroad is too risky”…UK Government

Summer holidays overseas are “extremely unlikely” because of the risk of travellers bringing coronavirus variants back to the UK, a scientist on a government advisory body has said.

The UK faces a “real risk” if people travel abroad, Dr Mike Tildesley said.

Foreign holidays are currently not allowed and returning travellers have to quarantine.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said it was “too early to tell” when holidays abroad would be allowed.

Under the current roadmap for easing restrictions, the earliest date people in England could holiday abroad would be 17 May.

People can currently travel abroad for a limited number of reasons, such as education or work, with anyone who does having to fill in a “Declaration to Travel” form stating a valid reason for leaving the country.

A government taskforce will report to the prime minister on 12 April detailing when and how international travel can resume.

In Scotland, national clinical director Jason Leitch also said foreign summer holidays in Europe were looking “less likely” as Covid numbers in some countries were a “cause for concern”.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said on Saturday morning half of all adults in the UK have now received a coronavirus vaccine.

Friday was also a record-breaking day for jabs, Mr Hancock added.

Dr Tildesley, a member of the government’s Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling, which feeds into Sage, said there was a danger holidaymakers could bring back variants, like the one that emerged in South Africa – which were less susceptible to vaccines.

Dr Tildesley told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I think that international travel this summer is, for the average holidaymaker, sadly I think, extremely unlikely.

“I think we are running a real risk if we do start to have lots of people going overseas in July, for instance, and August because of the potential for bringing more of these new variants back into the country.

“What is really dangerous is if we jeopardise our vaccination campaign by having these variants, where the vaccines don’t work as effectively, spreading more rapidly.”

Future vaccination campaigns might need to be considered to tackle future variants, but “the longer that we can push that down the road… the better”, Dr Tildesley added.

image captionThe earliest date holidays abroad could be allowed under the current roadmap out of lockdown is 17 May

Prof Andrew Hayward, from Sage, said it was “unlikely” the government would want to encourage travel to European countries currently experiencing high levels of coronavirus infections.

“I suppose one of the more worrying things about this resurgence is that in some parts of Europe the South African variant is beginning to creep up to higher levels,” he told Times Radio.

He said this variant was of “particular concern” because vaccine effectiveness against it was “quite low”.

Airlines UK, which represents UK-registered carriers, said it was “too early to say” what the state of Covid will be in Europe and the rest of the world in 10 weeks’ time.

“We have always said any reopening must be risk-based, but also led by the overriding assumption that as the vaccine rollout accelerates both here and abroad, a phased easing of restrictions is achievable,” Airlines UK said.

“We know that universal, restriction-free travel is unlikely from 17 May but under a tiered system, based on risk, international travel can meaningfully restart and build up, with minimal restrictions in time.”

France and Poland increase lockdown measures as infections surge

France and Poland have reintroduced partial lockdowns as both countries battle a sharp rise in Covid infections in recent weeks.

Some 21 million people in 16 areas of France, including the capital Paris, are affected as the country fears a third wave.

In Poland, shops, hotels, cultural and sporting facilities are closed across the country for three weeks.

The country has the highest new daily rates of Covid cases since November.

Coronavirus cases are also rising exponentially in Germany, with Chancellor Angela Merkel warning it is likely that the country will now need to apply an “emergency brake” and re-impose lockdown measures.

The vaccine rollout across the European Union has been hindered by delayed deliveries as well as the suspension in several countries of the use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, over fears of possible side effects.

What’s the situation in France and Poland?

In France, the partial lockdown took effect from midnight on Friday.

Trains leaving Paris for parts of the country where lockdown restrictions do not apply, such as Brittany and Lyon, were reportedly fully booked hours before the measures were due to come into effect.

Traffic jams were reported on several roads leaving the capital.

The new restrictions are not be as strict as the previous lockdown, with people allowed to exercise outdoors.

Non-essential businesses are shut, but schools remain open, along with hairdressers if they follow a “particular sanitary protocol”.

France has reported more than 4.2 million infections since the start of the outbreak, with nearly 92,000 Covid-related deaths, according to the data compiled by America’s Johns Hopkins University.

image captionThe Old Town in the Polish capital Warsaw has been almost deserted in recent days

In Poland, the three-week lockdown begins on Saturday.

Polish health officials earlier warned the nationwide restrictions were necessary because of a rampant British variant of Covid-19 in the country. The variant now makes up more than 60% of infections.

Poland has had more than two million confirmed infections, and nearly 49,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins.

According to the World Happiness Report, Finland is the happiest place in the world. Other countries are:

Finland has been named the happiest place in the world for a fourth year running, in an annual UN-sponsored report.

The World Happiness Report saw Denmark in second place, then Switzerland, Iceland and the Netherlands.

New Zealand was again the only non-European nation in the top 10. The UK fell from 13th to 17th place.

Data from analytics researcher Gallup asked people in 149 countries to rate their own happiness.

Measures including social support, personal freedom, gross domestic product (GDP) and levels of corruption were also factored in.

The country deemed the most unhappy in the world was Afghanistan, followed by Lesotho, Botswana, Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

There was a “significantly higher frequency of negative emotions” in just over a third of the countries, the report authors said, likely pointing to the effects of the pandemic.

However, things got better for 22 countries. Several Asian countries fared better than they had in last year’s rankings, while China moved to 84th place from 94th.

“Surprisingly there was not, on average, a decline in well-being when measured by people’s own evaluation of their lives,” John Helliwell, one of the report’s authors, said in a statement.

“One possible explanation is that people see Covid-19 as a common, outside threat affecting everybody and that this has generated a greater sense of solidarity and fellow-feeling.”

Finland “ranked very high on the measures of mutual trust that have helped to protect lives and livelihoods during the pandemic”, the authors said.

The Nordic nation of 5.5 million people has managed far better than the majority of Europe during the pandemic, with just over 70,000 cases and 805 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

According to the report, the ten happiest countries are:

  1. Finland
  2. Denmark
  3. Switzerland
  4. Iceland
  5. Netherlands
  6. Norway
  7. Sweden
  8. Luxembourg
  9. New Zealand

US Actor, Armie Hammer, Under Investigation Over Alleged Rape Accusation

US actor, Armie Hammer is under investigation for sexual assault after a woman accused him of rape according to a report by HuffPost.

The woman, a 24-year-old named only as Effie, made the allegations during a virtual press conference held by high-profile US lawyer Gloria Allred on Thursday.
Hammer has denied the allegations, with his lawyer Andrew Brettler describing them as “outrageous”, and said his client “welcomes the opportunity to set the record straight”.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to the PA news agency it had opened a sexual assault investigation over the alleged rape, said to have taken place in 2017.
The accuser broke down while reading a prepared statement on Thursday, alleging she first met Hammer, 34, on Facebook in 2016.
She said she had been 20 at the time, adding: “I fell in love with him instantly.”
Effie said Hammer was “employing manipulation tactics in order to exert control over me” and accused him of abusing her “mentally, emotionally, and sexually”.
She said:

On April 24, 2017, Armie Hammer raped me for over four hours in Los Angeles, during which he repeatedly slapped my head against a wall, bruising my face. During those four hours, I tried to get away and he wouldn’t let me. I thought that he was going to kill me. He then left with no concern for my wellbeing. I was completely in shock and I couldn’t believe that someone I loved did that to me. I tried so hard to justify his actions, even to the point of responding to him in a way that did not reflect my true feelings. During and since this attack, I have lived in fear of him. And for a long time, I tried to dismiss his actions towards me as a twisted form of love.

She was left suicidal by the alleged rape, she said, adding that she feels “immense guilt” in not speaking out sooner.
Hammer’s lawyer has denied the allegations in a statement on behalf of his client. He included a text, allegedly from the accuser, claiming it “undermines and refutes” the rape allegation.

As recently as July 18, 2020, [the accuser] sent graphic texts to Mr Hammer telling him what she wanted him to do to her. Mr Hammer responded making it clear that he did not want to maintain that type of relationship with her. The screenshot below is just one of hundreds (the accuser) sent to Mr Hammer. It was never Mr Hammer’s intention to embarrass or expose [the accuser] but she has now escalated this matter to another level by hiring a civil lawyer to host a public press conference. With the truth on his side, Mr Hammer welcomes the opportunity to set the record straight. From day one, Mr Hammer has maintained that all of his interactions with [the accuser] – and every other sexual partner of his for that matter – have been completely consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance, and mutually participatory. [The accuser’s] attention-seeking and ill-advised legal bid will only make it more difficult for real victims of sexual violence to get the justice they deserve.

In response to Hammer’s legal team sharing a text allegedly from the accuser, Allred said:

I challenge Armie Hammer to present all, not some, of his communications with Effie to the Los Angeles Police Department and answer all of their questions directly rather than through his lawyers.

Armie Hammer is best known for his roles in films including Call Me By Your Name and The Social Network.

Kanye West Not Yet Richest Black Person In America — Forbes Report.

The organisation said West is currently worth less than one-third of that. Forbes has refuted reports that celebrity Kanye West is worth nearly $7 billion, saying such estimates are based on the magical thinking around sales that don’t exist yet.

The organisation said West is currently worth less than one-third of that. On Wednesday, multiple outlets reported that Kanye West is the richest Black person in America, worth as much as $6.6 billion.

The news comes after Bloomberg reported that his sneaker brand Yeezy — as well as Yeezy Gap, which has yet to sell one item of clothing — have a combined value of as much as $4.7 billion. The publication mentioned, without going into full detail, an additional $1.7 billion in assets.

“It’s not true, based on our calculations. Forbes estimates he’s worth less than a third of that, or $1.8 billion. That’s a big jump from last May when Forbes first pegged his net worth to be $1.3 billion, but nowhere near as much as the purported $6.6 billion. Vista Equity’s Robert F. Smith remains the richest Black person in the US, worth an estimated $6 billion, while Aliko Dangote of Nigeria, worth $11.8 billion, is the richest black person in the world.

“The sky high estimate is the latest of West’s attempts to inflate his net worth—in the past he’s said that Forbes was “purposely snubbing me.”

“In actuality, it’s nothing personal. Forbes’ much more grounded number is based on that old-fashioned idea of current revenues — not theoretical future expectations. Yeezy Gap has brought in no revenue, let alone any profits. Who knows if the line will be popular. Maybe another hip-hop star will create the next trendy sneaker in a year or two, and Yeezys will be old news. The same thinking goes for Yeezy Supply, West’s ecommerce platform. He has high hopes to turn it into a fashion destination — as of now, it just shills his shoes.

“As for Yeezy sneakers, they’re selling crazy well. The company’s revenue grew 30% last year. and its most recent limited drop, the 450 in Cloud White, sold out in under a minute. Analysts with whom we spoke agree there’s growth left in the business, and if that occurs, his net worth will continue to climb. But even that’s not 100% certain, so for now, we are sticking with 2020’s numbers,” the Forbes report said.

“Forbes is treating West the same way we do everyone else with similar royalty-based businesses: we take the most recent year’s licensing income and apply a multiple to it to account for the fact that this is an ongoing revenue stream. This is how we value Donald Trump’s licensing businesses and Jay-Z’s music catalogue.

“West’s wildly optimistic approach to his net worth mirrors the approach used by Donald Trump, who insists the value of his name be included in any net worth estimate. Trump, who we value at $2.5 billion, says his brand has an intrinsic value, regardless of actual revenue. West and his camp are making a similar argument for businesses attached to the Yeezy name,” it added.

Tanzania president died aged 61

Tanzania’s President John Magufuli has died aged 61, the country’s vice-president has announced.

He died on Wednesday from heart complications at a hospital in Dar es Salaam, Samia Suluhu Hassan said in an address on state television.

Mr Magufuli had not been seen in public for more than two weeks, and rumours had been circulating about his health.

Opposition politicians said last week that he had contracted Covid-19, but this has not been confirmed.

Mr Magufuli was one of Africa’s most prominent coronavirus sceptics, and called for prayers and herbal-infused steam therapy to counter the virus.

“It is with deep regret that I inform you that today… we lost our brave leader, the president of the Republic of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli,” Vice-President Hassan said in the announcement.

She said there would be 14 days of national mourning and flags would fly at half mast.

According to Tanzania’s constitution, Ms Hassan will be sworn in as the new president within 24 hours and should serve the remainder of Mr Magufuli’s five-year term which he began last year.

Mr Magufuli was last seen in public on 27 February, but Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa insisted last week that the president was “healthy and working hard”.

He blamed the rumours of the president’s ill-health on “hateful” Tanzanians living abroad.

But opposition leader Tundu Lissu told the BBC that his sources had told him Mr Magufuli was being treated in hospital for coronavirus in Kenya.

John Magufuli at a glance

image captionMagufuli was first elected president in 2015
  • Born in Chato, north-west Tanzania, in 1959
  • Studied chemistry and maths at the University of Dar es Salaam
  • Worked as a chemistry and maths teacher
  • First elected as an MP in 1995
  • Became a cabinet minister in 2000
  • First elected president in 2015

When Covid-19 arrived in Tanzania, Mr Magufuli called on people to go to churches and mosques to pray. “Coronavirus, which is a devil, cannot survive in the body of Christ… It will burn instantly,” he said.

He declared Tanzania “Covid-19 free” last June, saying the virus had been eradicated by three days of national prayer.

He also mocked the efficacy of masks, expressed doubts about testing, and teased neighbouring countries which imposed health measures to curb the virus.

“Countries in Africa will be coming here to buy food in the years to come… they will be suffering because of shutting down their economy,” he said, according to the Associated Press.

Tanzania has not published details of its coronavirus cases since May, and the government has refused to purchase vaccines.

On Monday, police said they had arrested four people on suspicion of spreading rumours on social media that the president was ill.

“To spread rumours that he’s sick smacks of hate,” Mr Majaliwa said at the time.

Shock and disbelief in Tanzania

Analysis by Athuman Mtulya, BBC News, Dar es Salaam

The country is in a sombre mood – for the first time in its six decades of existence, Tanzania has lost a sitting president, John Pombe Magufuli.

The news of his death was received with shock and disbelief – although there were rumours of his illness, the authorities reassured the country that all was well with him.

From his home district of Chato to the capital of Dodoma to the business hub of Dar es Salaam, most Tanzanians have been mourning Magufuli.

There are those with a different view, especially on social media led by exiled opposition politician Tundu Lissu, who has been speculating that President Magufuli had contracted Covid which led to his death, however the authorities have insisted the death was caused by heart complications.

Tanzanians are now turning their minds to the succession, which should see current Vice-President Samia Suluhu Hassan become the country’s first female president.

Mr Magufuli was declared president on his 56th birthday in October 2015. He was elected for a second term following a disputed poll last year.

He was hailed for his anti-corruption stance during his time in office, but he was also accused of cracking down on dissent and curtailing certain freedoms.

His critics agree that Mr Magufuli contributed to Tanzania’s development. He invested in large infrastructure projects such as a standard-gauge railway to connect the country with its neighbours, major highways, and a bus system in the commercial hub of Dar es Salaam.

He also increased electricity production, reducing the need for power rationing.

But it is his approach to Covid-19 that many analysts say will define his legacy.

African leaders pay tribute

In Tanzania, people have reacted with grief and disbelief to the news of Mr Magufuli’s death.

One, Joseph Petro, told the BBC he thought Mr Magufuli was a “caring” leader, adding “he was helping people in one way or another”.

“I am really pained. I am personally pained,” he said.

image captionTanzania has declared 14 days of national mourning for the president

Another, Illuminata Abel, offered similar sentiments: “He was not my relative, but he was someone who listened to people’s problems, and he was down to earth.”

African leaders have also come out to pay tribute.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta said: “I have lost a friend, colleague and visionary ally,” and declared a seven-day period of national mourning in Kenya.

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan called Mr Magufuli a “partner in democracy” and a “patriot who loved his country”.

But Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu told the BBC that Mr Magufuli’s “politics, policies and Covid denialism” had “driven the country towards disaster”.

Shocking: 14-year-old schoolgirl ‘beaten to death’ by male classmates in Abeokuta.

A 14-year-old student of Reverend Kuti Memorial Grammar School, Isabo, Abeokuta, Ogun State, had been beaten to death by three boys, said to be her classmates.
It was gathered that Waliat Keshinro, who was in JSS 2 alongside the three boys, was attacked on her way home from school on February 24th.
DAILY POST learnt that the boys severely beat and assaulted the deceased girl, leaving her with “internal injuries”.

But, the poor girl, it was said, managed to return home that day, pretending not to have been physically attacked and assaulted.
However, a few days after, she became ill and was taken to the State Hospital, Ijaye, from where she was later referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, all in Abeokuta.
Our correspondent gathered that the teenage girl died in the course of treatment at the hospital.
Her father, Ajani Keshinro, said his daughter died while she was about to have an X-ray, saying he had spent a lot of money to keep her alive.

Speaking, Waliat’s mother, Iyabo Keshinro, expressed sadness that her daughter did not inform her that she was attacked by her classmates on her way home, narrating amidst tears, how she would miss her dear child.
Iyabo said the deceased spoke up when things had gone out of hand, adding that she mentioned those who beat her before she died.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, has confirmed the incident.
Oyeyemi said the three boys mentioned have been arrested by the police for investigation.

According to him, Waliat was beaten and threatened not to tell anybody about the incident.
“A student from Reverend Kuti Memorial Grammar School, Abeokuta, had a fracas with some of her classmates and she was seriously beaten by three or four of them. They threatened her not to inform anybody about the incident.

After the beating, she fell sick and was taken to FMC Abeokuta, where she was undergoing treatment. I think after about three days, she revealed what happened to her parents. Unfortunately, not quite long after the revelation, she gave up the ghost and the parents came to the station to report.

“The police are on top of the situation. Investigations have commenced. Those she mentioned when she was about to give up have been apprehended. The necessary medical report that is needed has been applied for and once we can establish that she died as a result of the beating, the case will be charged to court,” Oyeyemi said.

Kanye West has become the richest Black man in U.S. history, as it’s revealed he’s now worth a whopping $6.6 billion.

The 43-year-old’s worth is led by his Yeezy line which is now in partnership with Adidas AG and Gap Inc, with the business valued between $3.2 billion and $4.7 billion.

According to Bloomberg, the upcoming collaboration between Yeezy and Gap – which is set to hit stores this summer “could be worth as much as $970 million of that total” with additional income coming from his music catalog, cash, stocks and business investments such as estranged wife Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS underwear brand.

As well as having $1.7 billion in other assets, ‘Ye has $110 million from his music catalogue and $122 million in cash.

West currently has full ownership and creative control of the Yeezy brand by himself after he previously signed a 10-year agreement to design and sell clothes under the Yeezy Gap label last year, Bloomberg adds.

Citing the document obtained by their outlet, Bloomberg noted that the new Gap line is expected “to break $150 million in sales in its first full year in 2022.”

News of Kanye’s worth comes days after his 22nd Grammy win for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for his LP Jesus Is King.

It also comes amid his split with estranged wife Kim Kardashian, who filed for divorce last month. The couple share four children: daughters North, 7½, and Chicago, 3, and sons Saint, 5, and Psalm, who will turn 2 in May.

“I am happy to report that I am back home.” Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods has returned home and will work on “getting stronger every day” following the car crash that left him with significant injuries.

The American, 45, needed surgery after suffering a fractured leg and shattered ankle in the crash.

The 15-time major champion was moved to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for follow-up procedures on 27 February.

On Wednesday he tweeted: “Happy to report that I am back home continuing my recovery.”

He added: “I am so grateful for the outpouring of support and encouragement that I have received over the past few weeks.

“I will be recovering at home and working on getting stronger everyday.”

Woods, who was recovering from back surgery at the time of his accident, was found unconscious and with his face and chin covered in blood at the scene.

Los Angeles police said there was no evidence Woods had been impaired by drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.

County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Woods survived “what would otherwise have been a fatal crash” because the interior of his vehicle had remained largely intact.

“I had to endure seeing the person that raped me when I was a teenager all the time.” — Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato has said she was raped as a teenager while working for the Disney Channel.

The 28-year-old revealed in her documentary Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil that the person faced no consequences after she came forward.

The singer does not say who the offender was, only that she “had to see this person all the time” afterwards.

“My MeToo story is me telling somebody that someone did this to me and they never got in trouble for it,” says Demi Lovato in it, according to Variety’s review.

“I’ve just kept it quiet because I’ve always had something to say, and I’m tired of opening my mouth.”

The YouTube docuseries tackles issues in Demi Lovato’s life such as trauma, addiction and her relapse into a drug overdose in 2018.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=jTiiD8L811w%3Ffeature%3Doembed

She speaks about her alleged rape saying: “We were hooking up but I said – hey, this is not going any farther.

“And that didn’t matter to them, they did it anyways. And I internalised it and I told myself it was my fault because I still went in the room with him.”

She says she coped through self-harm, and going through the eating disorder bulimia.

In the series, she also talks about a “promise ring” which was worn by some young stars including herself and the Jonas Brothers, as a commitment to only have sex after marriage.

“So what, I’m supposed to come out to the public after saying I have a promise ring? Six months later, I’m supposed to say, well I had sex, even though it was rape? Some people aren’t going to see it that way.

https://emp.bbc.com/emp/SMPj/

The series also shows the damage Demi’s drug overdose had in 2018. She was taken to hospital after being found unconscious at her Los Angeles home.

“My doctors said that I had five to 10 more minutes.”

After suffering three strokes and a heart-attack, she’s previously said she had been “left with brain damage and I still feel the effects of that”.

Those effects include blurry vision that means she can’t drive and made reading difficult.

Weeks before the incident, she released a song titled Sober, in which she revealed that after six years of sobriety: “I’m not sober any more.”

Demi has previously been open about her struggles with addiction and bulimia, including in her 2017 YouTube Originals documentary Simply Complicated.

She re-launched her singing career at last year’s Grammy Awards and sang the national anthem at the 2020 Super Bowl.

In January, she sang on a TV special which marked US President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil will appear on YouTube from 23 March.

Eight people have been killed in mass shootings in the USA

Police in the US state of Georgia have identified four of the eight people who were killed in mass shootings at three massage parlours in the Atlanta area.

Officials say it is still too early to know whether the attack, in which six Asian women were killed, was racially motivated.

Cherokee County Sheriff Frank Reynolds said the suspect may have been a patron and claimed to have a “sex addiction”.

The attack comes amid a sharp uptick in crimes against Asian-Americans.

Four of the victims have been identified as Ashley Yaun, 33; Paul Andre Michels, 54; Xiaojie Yan, 49; and Daoyou Feng, 44. Elcias R Hernandez-Ortiz was identified as having been injured.

What did police say?

In a news conference on Wednesday, investigators said suspect Robert Aaron Long admitted to the shooting spree, and said that he denied that the attack was motivated by race.

“He apparently has an issue, what he considers a sex addiction, and sees these locations as a temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate,” said Capt Jay Baker, adding that Mr Long was caught with a 9mm handgun and did not resist arrest.

Massage parlours are known to sometimes provide prostitution services, but authorities say there is no indication yet that this is the case at the targeted locations.

“These are legally operating businesses that have not been on our radar,” said Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who added that the city would not engage in “victim shaming, victim blaming”.

Police also noted it is still too early in the investigation to definitively state a motive and that the suspect appeared to have been acting alone.

Ms Bottoms said that he was on his way to Florida, possibly to commit more shootings, when he was arrested.

The suspect’s parents helped to identify him, officials told reporters.

According to CBS News, the suspect told investigators that “he loved God and guns”.

What do we know about the shootings?

The first happened at about 17:00 (21:00 GMT) on Tuesday at Young’s Asian Massage in Acworth, Cherokee County.

Two people died at the scene and three were taken to hospital, where two more died, sheriff’s office spokesman Capt Baker said. He later confirmed the victims were two Asian women, a white woman and a white man, and said a Hispanic man had been wounded.

Less than an hour later, police were called to a “robbery in progress” at Gold Spa in north-east Atlanta.

“Upon arrival, officers located three females deceased inside the location from apparent gunshot wounds,” police said.

While there, officers were called to a spa across the street, called Aromatherapy Spa, where they found another woman shot dead.

Investigators who had studied CCTV footage then released images of a suspect near one of the spas. Police said that, after a manhunt, Robert Aaron Long, of Woodstock, Georgia, was arrested in Crisp County, about 150 miles (240km) south of Atlanta.

image captionRobert Aaron Long was taken into custody

Authorities in South Korea said they were working to confirm the nationalities of the four women of Korean descent.

What has the reaction been?

Though authorities say it is too early to know if the victims were targeted because of their race, many online have criticised a recent rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, which activists have linked to rhetoric blaming Asian people for the coronavirus pandemic.

The advocacy group Stop AAPI Hate, which tracks attacks on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders acknowledged a motive was unclear, but said “right now there is a great deal of fear and pain in the Asian American community that must be addressed”.

It called the shootings “an unspeakable tragedy” for both the victims’ families and the Asian-American community, which has “been reeling from high levels of racist attacks”.

“A motive is still not clear, but a crime against any community is a crime against us all,” Mayor Bottoms said in a statement, adding that she had been in communication with the White House.

Mr Biden said he had been briefed on the shootings. Ahead of his meeting with the Irish prime minister, the president acknowledged that “Asian-Americans have been very concerned” but would not speculate on the gunman’s motive.

“I’ll have more to say when the investigation is completed.”

Vice-President Kamala Harris, the first Asian-American to hold the office, said during a Wednesday meeting with Irish officials: “I do want to say to our Asian-American community that we stand with you and understand how this has frightened and shocked and outraged all people.”

Ben Crump, a leading civil rights lawyer, also took to Twitter, saying: “Today’s tragic killings in #Atlanta reaffirm the need for us to step up and protect ALL of America’s marginalised minorities from racism.”

image captionTwo of the spas were across the road from each other in Atlanta

Atlanta police said they were increasing patrols around businesses similar to those attacked.

The New York Police Department’s counter-terrorism branch said that while there was no known connection to New York city, it would “be deploying assets to our great Asian communities across the city out of an abundance of caution”.

The police department in Seattle also said it would increase patrols and outreach to support its Asian-American community.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp praised law enforcement officials for their response to the shootings, and said: “Our entire family is praying for the victims of these horrific acts of violence.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed the shootings ahead of a meeting with his South Korean counterpart on Wednesday. “We are horrified by this violence which has no place in America or anywhere,” he said.

“We will stand up for the right of our fellow Americans, Korean Americans, to be safe, to be treated with dignity.”

Davido, Kaffy laud D’Banj, Bankulli for settling two-year rift

Entertainment industry players like Davido and dance queen Kaffy have lauded

Nigerian music star, Oladapo ‘D’Banj’ Oyebanjo and Bankulli for settling a two-year-long social media rift.

D’banj and Bankulli had a hot exchange on social media over the latter’s claim on how the former met American rapper, Kanye West, at an airport.

The back and forth between the two music stars degenerated further with fans joining in the hot exchange and further drifting the erstwhile buddies further apart.

However, D’Banj and Bankulli seem to have buried the hatchet to rekindle their once bloomy friendship.

Earlier in the week, D’Banj and Bankulli met and broke the final straw of their rift in Accra, Ghana.

The two music entrepreneurs not only let go of their grievances to embrace peace but also shared the good news with their fans on social media.

In an Instagram post, Bankulli shared a picture of himself and D’banj with the caption “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. Osinawata Buruogaraya 1 cc @iambangalee.”

Other industry heads that have also lauded the reconciliatory moves include international artist manager, Vanessa Amadi, May D, Iyanya, Sesan Ogunro, and music producer, Shizzi.

Also, present on the occasion was D’Banj’s brother, Kayswitch.

Same sex union cannot be blessed by the Catholic Church

The Catholic Church does not have the power to bless same-sex unions, the Vatican office responsible for doctrine has said.

It is “impossible” for God to “bless sin”, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) said on Monday.

But the CDF did note the “positive elements” in same-sex relationships.

In October, Pope Francis said in a documentary that he thought same-sex couples should be allowed to have “civil unions”.

In the Catholic Church, a blessing is given by a priest or other minister in the name of the Church.

image captionIn 2013 Pope Francis famously broke with doctrinal tradition, saying: “Who am I to judge gay people?”

On Monday, Pope Francis approved the response by the CDF, saying it was “not intended to be a form of unjust discrimination, but rather a reminder of the truth of the liturgical rite”.

Some parishes in recent months, including in Germany and the US, have started giving blessings to people in same-sex relationships as a way to welcome gay Catholics to the church, Reuters news agency reported.

The CDF’s response was in answer to the question posed to it: “Does the Church have the power to give the blessing to unions of persons of the same sex?”. It replied: “Negative”.

The CDF noted that marriage between a man and a woman is sacrament and therefore blessings cannot be extended to same-sex couples.

“For this reason, it is not licit to impart a blessing on relationships, or partnerships, even stable, that involve sexual activity outside of marriage (i.e., outside the indissoluble union of a man and a woman open in itself to the transmission of life), as is the case of the unions between persons of the same sex,” it said.

In 2013, Pope Francis famously said: “Who am I to judge gay people?”

Last year the pontiff said in a documentary by Evgeny Afineevsky that “homosexual people have a right to be in a family… they are children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or made miserable over it”.

The Vatican later attempted to clarify the comments saying they were taken out of context and did not indicate support for same-sex marriage.

Nigerian Woman Imprisoned In Côte d’Ivoire After Being Setup By Police.

A 21-year-old Nigerian woman, who’s simply identified as Itunu, has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment after being set up by the police.

Investigative journalist, David Hundeyin who narrated Itunu’s ordeal in a series of tweets, said the Bondoukou-based trader’s ordeal began after she returned home from a visit to her sick mom who lives in Ibadan, a Southwest State in Nigeria.

Shortly before Itunu was due to travel, her flat was burgled and items worth more than N300,000 were stolen including her TV and gas cooker.

Despite the blow, she decided to travel anyway after reporting the incident to the police. She returned from her trip in October 2019.

Upon returning, she was informed by a lodger she left in her flat that the thief had been identified.

The thief turned out to be a 14-year-old boy who lived nearby. His embarrassed dad apologized and admitted that his son was a habitual thief. The items had already been sold.
Itunu reported this to the police who told her to return on Tuesday, Nov 5, 2019. The appointment held on Wednesday, Nov 6 that same year.

There she says, the DPO informed her that the suspect was in fact his nephew. He then offered her a settlement worth roughly N100,000 to drop the case.

Newsrand learnt that Itunu refused the settlement, citing the disparity between the value of the stolen items and what was offered. Next, she says, the visibly enraged DPO tried everything to frustrate her into dropping the case, including making her travel to Abidjan for a police appointment.

On her arrival at Abidjan, Itunu hired a lawyer to attend the appointment with her, all to no avail as the police refused to cooperate. Frustrated, she returned home to Bondoukou.

Around 5PM the following day, a convoy of police vehicles showed up outside her house and publicly arrested her.

On getting to the station, she was charged with theft (the theft of her own items) in her own apartment.

She spent the next 4 days in police custody, after which she was taken out of the cell and offered her freedom if she agreed to sign papers dropping her case but Itunu rejected the offer and chose to go to court instead.

Itunu says she then overheard an officer saying “Elle est une Nigériane? Elle mourra ici!” meaning (“She’s a Nigerian? She will die here!”).

The decision to go to court turned out to be a monumental error of judgment compounded by her own naivety about the Ivorian justice system.

The (French-speaking) court did not allow her adequate legal representation or give her a chance to properly state her case. She was speedily convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.

Further complicating this was her decision to identify herself to the court as “Becky Paul”. She says she did this to avoid getting her family name mixed up in bad news and potentially upsetting her aged mom.

As a result, for the past one year and 4 months since her conviction, Itunu alias “Becky Paul” has become, to all intents and purposes, a forgotten inmate at the notorious Maison d’arrêt et de Correction Bondoukou (Bondoukou Remand and Correction Facility).
