Man falls from ninth floor of a building then stands and asks ‘what happened?’ (Video)

A man survived a fall from a high-rise building in New Jersey, USA on Wednesday morning, October 6, much to the shock of bystanders.

The 31-year-old man plunged nine stories down before landing in the chasis of a BMW, New York post reports. The car cushioned his landing and helped him survive.

Surprisingly, when bystanders approached following the fall, they noticed he was still alive.

He then stood up in the wreckage, raised his right arm, and asked the bystanders, “What happened?”

An eyewitness, Christina Smith, called 911 for assistance. It was learnt that the man did not work in the building and has since refused to give his identity to police.

“I heard a big boom and I didn’t think it was a person at first. The back window of the car just busted out—exploded. Then the guy jumped up and started screaming. His arm was all twisted,” Smith said.

He, however, remains in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

WHO approves rollout of first malaria vaccine in Africa

The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the rollout of the first malaria vaccine in Africa.

The WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who confirmed the development at a media briefing on Wednesday in Geneva, Switzerland, said the rollout of the vaccine aimed at reducing infant mortality arising from malaria across the continent.

He said the RTS,S vaccine would be made available to countries after successful pilot programmes in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi.

The RTS,S vaccine, also known as Mosquirix, was developed by the British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).

Ghebreyesus said: “I started my career as a malaria researcher, and I longed for the day that we would have an effective vaccine against this ancient and terrible disease. And today is that day, a historic day. Today, the WHO is recommending the broad use of the world’s first malaria vaccine.

Using this vaccine in addition to existing tools to prevent malaria could save tens of thousands of young lives each year.

“It is safe. It significantly reduces life-threatening, severe malaria, and we estimate it to be highly cost-effective.

“Malaria has been with us for millennia, and the dream of a malaria vaccine has been a long-held, but unattainable dream. Today, the RTS,S malaria vaccine, more than 30 years in the making, changes the course of public health history. We still have a very long road to travel. But this is a long stride down that road.”

Lagos, Oyo the headquarters of drug abuse in Nigeria – NDLEA

The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Buba Marwa, on Wednesday, described Lagos and Oyo States as headquarters of drug abuse in Nigeria.

Marwa, who stated this at a public lecture organised by United Action for Change (UAC), in Lagos State, added that at least 14.3 million people in Nigeria are into drug abuse.

He noted that the South-West has the highest number of drug abusers in the country.

The NDLEA chief revealed that Nigeria was ranked first on the use of Cannabis Sativa.

Marwa said: “Nigeria’s drug statistics should give every one of us a sleepless night.

Not less than 14.3 million Nigerians abuse drugs — Nigerians between the ages of 16 and 64 years. Among them, one in four drug users is female.

“Expectedly, cannabis is the most abused substance by Nigerians. What’s alarming, however, is that a staggering 10.6 million Nigerians abuse the use of cannabis.

“That number makes our country number one in the use of cannabis. Let’s ponder this for a moment; 10.6 million is more than the estimated population of Botswana and Lesotho combined.

“Most of the abusers first started at the age of 19, and the highest level of usage is concentrated in youth between 25 and 29.

“The highest abuse of drugs is reported in the Southern part of Nigeria, with the South-West recording the highest prevalence with over four million Nigerians engaging in the use of various drugs.

In this regard, the Lagos-Oyo axis is the epicentre of drug abuse in Nigeria.”

Sheikh Gumi urges Nigerians to show more sympathy for bandits

Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi has urged Nigerians to show more understanding and empathy to bandits in order to aid their repentance and re-integration into the society.

Gumi made this assertion on Thursday via a lecture delivered at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State.

He said “if people listen to the bandits, they would become amenable to abandoning their violent ways”, while noting that residents can develop “mutual relationship with the bandits without being harmed.”

Gumi also detailed his interactions with the bandits in response to a question from a student.

“My interaction(s) with the bandits have been easy because I always go through the door, not the window. If you go through the door, you will go in and come back safely,” the cleric said.

In response to why the bandits did not abduct him despite repeated meetings, he said, “When we meet them, we don’t speak, we give them the microphone to speak even for one hour.

“When we first approached them, we saw that they were holding their warrant (weapons) ready to fire. By the time we finish our meeting, they will hand in their weapons and we will be taking pictures.

“So this is the power of human interaction which is what we are here to study as social scientists. That is the approach.”

He stated that he was able to gain the respect of the bandits through his pacifist approach while urging Nigerians to emulate the same.

That is the respect I give them. I say come, come and sit with me. Come and sit down. I want to hear from you. With that respect, the Fulani man, you can get him.

“So don’t be surprised, if you are nice to him, if you are ready to listen to him, if you are trying to understand his problem, if you put your legs in his own shoes, he will listen to you, you will go to the forest and return safely, God willing,” the cleric said.
