London court orders UK blogger to pay MFM founder, wife £100,000 for libel

London High Court of Justice, Queen’s Bench Division, has ordered one Ms. Maureen Badejo to pay the General Overseer of the Mountain Of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) International, Dr. Daniel Olukoya and his wife Folashade £100,000, as damages for libel.

The judge, Mrs. Justice Tipples, awarded the sum of £65,000 to Pastor Olukoya and £35,000 to his wife, totalling $100,000, about N56,428,540.

According to reports, the ruling was made by the judge on October 22, 2021.

The first to third claimants in the suit, designated as Claim No. QB-2020-003625, are MFM, Dr. Olukoya, and Mrs. Olukoya while Badejo is the sole defendant.

Justice Triples held, “It is ordered and adjudged that the damages payable by the Defendant to the Second Claimant be assessed in the sum of £65,000.

And is further ordered and adjudged that the damages payable by the Defendant to the Third Claimant be assessed in the sum of £35,000.”

Meanwhile, the defendant, Badejo, in a media campaign identified by the court had alleged, among others, that the MFM G.O and the MFM UK trustees were fraudsters, claiming that they were involved in fraud being investigated by the Charity Commission.

She also falsely claimed that Mrs. Olukoya – also a pastor in the church – was on the church payroll and earning a £35,000 salary from MFM, whereas she never collected a salary.

Furthermore, she alleged that Dr. Olukoya had abandoned his family and refused to take care of them.

The court also ordered Badejo to publish a summary of its judgment across nine of her social media channels for 10 days as a corrective measure to ensure the judgment reached all of her viewers.

Varsity workers give Nigerian govt ultimatum to reverse sharing formula on Earned Allowance

The leadership of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-teaching Staff Unions of Universities on Wednesday gave the Federal Government a two-week ultimatum to reverse the sharing formula for the Earned Allowances released to universities staff.

The JAC comprised the Non-Academic Staff Unions of Education and Associated Institutions (NASU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists, (NAAT).

The body stated this in a letter jointly signed by the NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, and addressed to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, in Abuja.

In the N40 billion Earned Allowances earlier released by the federal government to the four universities unions, ASUU was allocated 75 percent while the other three unions got 25 percent.

The federal government recently promised to release another N22.127 billion as Earned Allowances for the university staff with the sharing formula.

JAC, however, described the sharing formula as injustice.

The body urged the federal government to reverse the sharing formula immediately to avert industrial disputes in the university system.

The letter read: “The leadership of the Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU is constrained to write the minister in respect of the total failure of the federal government to positively address all the issues contained in the Memorandum of Action signed on February 25.

“The refusal of the Minister of Labour and Employment to finalise action on the subsequent Memorandum of Action reached at the meeting of August 25 is worrisome.

“It is regrettable to note that the draft of the Memorandum of Action reached August 25, which was handed over to JAC leadership for vetting was effectively returned on August 30, and almost two months after the meeting, no action has been taken.”

JAC noted that some of the contentious issues in the letter were the payment of minimum wage, consequential adjustment arrears, alleged inconsistencies in Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) payment, payment of hazard responsibility allowance to deserving members, and the earned allowances.

It added: “Contrary to the content of the Memorandum of Action of February 25, and the decision reached at the subsequent meeting of August 26, the information at our disposal as of the time of writing this letter indicates that the Federal Government has agreed to release another tranche of N22.127 billion for the payment of Earned Allowance to the Universities and Inter-University Center Staff at the ratio 75-25 percent.

“We are alarmed at this lack of sensitivity on the part of government when not long ago, Non-teaching staff protested the sharing formula applied by the Federal Government at 75-25 for the disbursement of the last tranche of N40 billion released for payment of earned allowances to both the teaching and non-teaching staff of our universities.

“To again embark on this provocative and unacceptable sharing formula in the next release will only ignite industrial disquiet in our university system.

We urge the Honourable minister to prevail on the federal government not to allow the present peaceful industrial atmosphere in the universities and inter-university centers in our country to be disrupted.

“We, therefore, request for positive redress of the issues presented above by the Federal Government within the next two weeks, failing which JAC may be forced to ask its members across the length and breadth of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to take a position on the need to resume the suspended strike.”

Seme border closure a disservice to Nigerians – Gani Adams

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, said on Wednesday the continued closure of the Seme border was a disservice to Nigerians living in the South-West part of the country.

Adams, who stated this at the 2021 edition of the Olokun Festival held at Suntan Beach Badagry, decried the loss of huge revenue accrued to the government due to the border closure.

He said the reason given by the Federal Government for closing the border was not true.

The government had in August 2019 claimed that the Nigerian land borders were closed in a bid to check smuggling and proliferation of dangerous weapons in the country.

Adams, therefore, called on the Federal Government to reopen the border.

He said: “The issue of the border closure is a thing of worry. Seme border was shut in August 2019 to curb the smuggling of goods and weapons. However, it is sad that the border still remained closed. Closing the border for close to three years in a nation like Nigeria is not good for our economy.

“Without war, Seme border closure is a disservice to the South-West. The implication of this prolonged closure on the nation’s economy is huge. Therefore, I urge the Federal Government to urgently open the Seme border considering its importance to Nigeria and Nigerians.”

Oba of Benin bans head of servants for alleged fraud, impersonation

The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has banned a former Omuada (head of servants) in his palace, Roland Ogbebor, for allegedly posing as the second in command to the king and also engaging in other sacrilegious acts.

Roland was also said to have been involved in land grabbing, extortion, intimidation and fraud since he was relieved of his post by His Royal Majesty.

In a statement in Benin City on Tuesday, to announce the formal banning of the Omuada on behalf of the Benin Monarch, the Secretary, Benin Traditional Council (BTC) Mr Frank Irabor, said the ban is “extended to his participation at all Oba Palace traditional establishments and functions, including spiritual groups, activities, festivals, shrines and, oguedion in the Benin Kingdom.”

According to Irabor, since his suspension as the Omuada, Ogbebor has been acting “as a wolf in sheep clothing and a trickster”

Irabor noted that the former Omuada was also involved in what he described as an “abominable and sacrilegious” act of parading himself as the second in command to His Royal Majesty.

He said: “Furthermore, he paraded himself as deputizing for Palace Authority to the extent of being addressed in an abominable manner as the second in command to His Royal Majesty. This is sacrilege and abomination, punishable by customary laws of our tradition.

“He has also behaved in treacherous ways to the Throne that is akin to being a traitor. He has been able to do this by disguising himself as a wolf in sheep clothing and a confidence trickster. He believed that his services to the Throne were indispensable.”

While stating that an overhauling of the palace administrative system to put an end to such act exhibited by Ogbebor is ongoing, Irabor urged members of the public who may have issues with Ogbebor that has to do with land grabbing to report to concerned security agencies copying the palace.

“Any person or village or community that has an issue with Roland especially on land grabbing, extortion, intimidation, impersonation and fraud, is strongly advised to send written complaints to the Secretary, Benin Traditional Council, or the Police, or Department of State Services and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, copying Benin Traditional Council,” he added.

Court adjourns Dane’s trial for alleged murder of wife, daughter till November 9

A Dane, Peter Nielsen, who is standing trial for the alleged murder of his Nigerian wife and daughter on Tuesday, denied committing the offence.

Nielsen, who was arraigned by the Lagos State government at the state High Court sitting in Tafawa Balewa Square, testified as the 10th defence witness in the case.

He was led in evidence by his counsel, Mr. Olasupo Shashore (SAN), who told the court that the evidence of the defendant was very crucial to his defence.

Nielsen was accused of killing his wife, Zainab, and their three-year-old daughter on April 5, 2018.

At Tuesday’s proceeding, the Dane said he met the late wife when he came to Nigeria as an investor in agriculture.

The defendant said he loved the deceased and they lived an active and happy life.

Nielsen said: “I did not kill my wife and our daughter, Petra; we had a fantastic relationship.

“Her dedication and perseverance to hard work drew me closer to her and she worked hard to achieve her dreams.”

The defendant said that before he got very close to the woman, he informed her that he was married in Denmark with two adult children.

Why Nigerian govt won’t go back on social media regulation – Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Tuesday, explained why the Federal Government would go ahead with the regulation of social media in Nigeria.

Mohammed, who spoke at an interactive session on the sideline of the 27th Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja, said social media spread fake news.

He stressed that the government’s quest for regulation of the platforms was to prevent another global war.

The minister said: “With fake news today and misinformation — I have always said here that the next world war will be caused by fake news.”

He stressed that Nigerians had deserted the old means of disseminating information by embracing social media.

Mohammed added: “Information is not what it used to be. For example, 20 to 30 years ago if the state or federal government had a television or radio and probably a newspaper, that was what we needed.

.“The people today, they don’t read newspapers, they don’t watch television — it’s social media. And it is the most expensive; the most unseen enemy. They are there every moment, and until we go to the same battlefield with them, there is nothing the government will do that will seem right.”

‘My estranged wife refused to breastfeed children, employed 12 nannies,’ Fani-Kayode tells court

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, on Tuesday, asked the Federal High Court, Abuja, to dismiss the N800million suit filed against him by his estranged wife, Precious Chikwendu.

The woman had in a fundamental rights enforcement suit against the ex-minister demanded N800 million as damages.

The Inspector-General of Police and some officers of the Nigeria Police Force were listed as respondents in the suit.

Other respondents in the suit were the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and CSP James Idachaba, Officer-in-Charge, Legal (CID), FCT Command.

She accused the respondents of intimidation and harassment during the pendency of the suit for the custody of her four children.

She is asking the court to restrain the IGP and his officers and men from intimidating and harassing her in any form pending the hearing and determination of her suit seeking the custody of the children.

However, in a counter-affidavit filed by his lawyers, Fani-Kayode asked the court to dismiss the suit for lack of merit.

He described the application as an abuse of the court process.

According to the ex-minister, the 23-paragraph supporting affidavit filed by Precious was concocted and presented by subterfuge in order to mislead the court and frustrate the administration of justice.

He said: “I know that the instant suit is nothing but a smokescreen intended to avoid the long arm of justice and to malign me.

“There is no merit whatsoever in this suit, which was filed in abuse of court and judicial process.

“It is in the interest of justice to dismiss this suit for lacking in merit.

“I conscientiously depose to this counter-affidavit from facts within my personal knowledge, and in good faith, believing same to be in accordance with the Oaths Act currently in force.”

On the alleged separation from her children, Fani-Kayode insisted that his ex-wife opted to leave her matrimonial home and consciously abandoned the children.

The ex-minister added: “As a fact, it is not surprising that Precious is capable of such reckless abandonment, because whilst she was with me in the house, she employed 12 in-house nannies to cater to the children, excluding supervisors and nurses who equally attended to them.

“She did not at any time extend maternal care to the children, for the reason that she had a medical condition which deprived her of any filial bond with them. She deprived the children of the natural sucks or breast milk, also on account of the need to preserve her body shape, coupled with a contrived medical condition which she claimed would not permit her to breastfeed them.”

World War III will be caused by fake news – Lai Mohammed

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Monday, stated that fake news will be the cause of the third World War.

He made the statement while appearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values to defend his ministry’s 2022 budget allocation.

According to Mohammed, the means of receiving information has changed over the decades, as 30 years ago it was through Television and radio sets, but people now prefer to patronise social media where fake news circulates easily.

The minister said; “The people today, they don’t read newspapers and don’t watch television — it’s social media. And it is most expensive; the most unseen enemy, they are there every moment.

I have always said here that the next world war will be caused by fake news.

“You can see even the US that use to pride itself on the freedom of the press is now questioning the role of the social media”.

Army detains soldier for assaulting two nurses at Kwara hospital

A soldier has been detained by the 22 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin, Kwara State, for allegedly beating two female nurses at the Sobi Specialist Hospital, Ilorin.

The hospital is owned by the Kwara State government.

The soldier, who injured one of the nurses in the process of beating them, is currently undergoing interrogation at Sobi Army Barracks in Ilorin.

The development was confirmed by the chairman of the state chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Alhaji Shehu Aminu.

According to Aminu, the incident happened on Friday at Okelele Primary Health Centre, Ilorin which now houses Sobi Specialist Hospital after it was converted to the state Isolation Centre during the outbreak of COVID-19 last year.

He said the soldier took his pregnant wife, who has been attending antenatal clinic at the hospital, for delivery.

According to him, upon admitting the soldier’s wife into the labour room, the nurse asked the soldier to go and procure delivery packs which included hand gloves and other materials to be used for delivery.

But instead of going for the delivery packs, the soldier, according to Aminu, told the nurse that he would not be able to do so because the state government has provided all the materials at the hospital.

Not satisfied with the nurse’s explanation, Aminu said the soldier became infuriated and headed to the doctor’s office and started beating the two nurses he met there.

“The soldier slapped one of the nurses who ran for her dear life while the other sustained ankle injury,” Aminu said.

He further revealed that the two nurses have been treated at the hospital for the injuries sustained while the association had reported the matter at the barracks.

Aminu also said that the state government had also reported the incident to the Nigerian Army headquarters in Abuja, adding that the culprit had been arrested and detained in Ilorin.

The Public Relations Officer of the 22 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin, St. Sgt Waziri, confirmed the incident, adding that the authority of the cantonment has put the soldier in the guard room for further interrogation on the matter.

Isaac Abbot Ogbobula, the Rector, Arch Sunusi Waziri Gumau explained that the Council studied the reports of the various committees before arriving at the final decision on the cases.

He said that the delay in arriving at the decision was not deliberate as insinuated by a section of the media saying that, “we don’t have anything to hide, we only followed due process in accordance with the extant laws of the Institution. I wonder what the hue was all about in the media”.

Sunusi Gumau further said that, “We set up various committees as soon as we received the formal complaints from the victims to ensure that justice was done. We have presented our findings to the Governing Council which during its regular meeting, approved the immediate dismissal of the affected staff”.

He added that, “they will be served with their letters of dismissal by Monday morning, the institution will copy the relevant security agencies and other concerned authorities. NCC alerts Nigerians on virus that steals banking details

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has alerted the citizens on the discovery of a damaging malware called “FluBot.”

The NCC Director of Public Affairs, Ikechukwu Adinde, who disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Abuja, said the malware steals banking details by attacking Android devices with fake security updates and App installations.

According to him, the virus attacks Android devices by pretending to be “FedEx, DHL, Correos, and Chrome applications” and compels unsuspecting users to alter the accessibility configurations on their devices to maintain a continuous presence on devices.

He stressed that FluBot is circulated through SMS and can snoop “on incoming notifications, initiate calls, read or write SMSes, and transmit the victim’s contact list to its control centre.”

The statement read: “According to the information received on October 21, 2021, from the Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT), Flubot ‘targets Androids with fake security updates and App installations.

“The ngCERT affirmed that Flubot ‘impersonates Android mobile banking applications to draw fake web view on targeted applications’ and its goal transcends stealing personal data and essentially targets stealing of credit card details or online banking credentials.

“The new malware undermines the security of devices by copying fake login screens of prominent banks, and the moment the users enter their login details on the fake pages, their data is harvested and transmitted to the malware operators’ control point from where the data is exploited by intercepting banking-related One Time Passwords (OTPs) and replacing the default SMS app on the targeted Android device.

Consequently, it secures admittance into the device through SMS and proceeds to transmit similar messages to other contacts that may be on the device it has attacked enticing them into downloading the fake app.

“It suffices to say that, when Flubot infects a device, it can result in incalculable financial losses.

Additionally, the malware creates a backdoor which grants access to the user’s device, thus enabling the invader or attacker to perform other criminal actions, including launching other variants of malware.”

Malware is commonly used to describe a virus or software designed specially to disrupt, damage, or gain unauthorised access to a computer system.

The commission also offered tips on how to guide against the virus.

It added: “The NCC hereby wishes to reiterate the advisory of ngCERT as follows:

In view of this discovery and understanding of the process by which this malware operates, and in order to protect millions of telecom consumers and prevent criminal forces, irrespective of location, from using telecom platforms to perpetrate fraud and irredeemable damages, the NCC advised that:

– Do not click on the link if you receive a suspicious text message, and do not install any app or security update the page asks you to install.

-Use updated antivirus software that detects and prevents malware infections.

– Apply critical patches to the system and application.

– Use strong passwords and enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) over logins.

– Back-up your data regularly.

– If you have been affected by this campaign, you should reset your device to factory mode as soon as possible. This will delete any data on your phone, including personal data.

– Do not restore from backups created after installing the app. You may contact ngCERT on *incident@cert.gov.ng* for technical assistance.

– You will also need to change the passwords to all of your online accounts, with urgency, around your online bank accounts.

– If you have concerns that your accounts may have been accessed by unauthorised people, contact your bank immediately.

Cambridge Varsity to return looted Benin artefacts

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, said on Wednesday the Cambridge University in the United Kingdom has finalised plans to return Benin artefacts in its possession.

The monarch stated this when the Chairman of DAAR Communications, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, visited his palace on the occasion of his fifth coronation anniversary.

He said Cambridge University would become the first institution to return the artefacts in its possession if the management stays true to its words.

He insisted that there was no dispute over the ownership of the thousands of Benin artefacts that were looted from the palace of the Oba of Benin during the British invasion of the kingdom in 1897.

The monarch, however, commended some countries that have expressed willingness to return some of the artefacts scattered across Europe, the United States and other parts of the world.

He said: “We hear that some researchers in Germany have said that some of them were produced here, some were produced there and so on and so forth.

“Where are those here and there? Were they outside the Benin Empire? Were they outside the Benin Kingdom or any of the artefacts produced outside the Benin Kingdom?

“If they were all produced in the Benin kingdom, why would any researcher try to say some were taken out of Benin Palace and some were taken from elsewhere?”

Lagos Police justifies tear-gassing #EndSARS protesters in Lekki

The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu, has justified the use of tear-gas on #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate on Wednesday.

Odumosu, who spoke during a chat with journalists at the Lekki tollgate, said the police fired tear gas at the protesters to avoid a breakdown of law and order.

According to the CP, the Force initially sent a memo regarding the prohibition on protests within a stipulated time frame.

Odumosu added that any demonstration beyond the agreed time constituted a nuisance and will not be tolerated.

The Commissioner said: “The protest was between 8 am and 10 am, anything, after 10 am, is a nuisance.

“I discussed with them and they said they will end the protest by 10 o’clock. Other people doing it now just causing a nuisance. some with machete, hammer, are they protesters or miscreants?

The protesters are free; they have done their thing and left. Any other persons remaining are the miscreants, hoodlums that want to capitalise on that to attack innocent people and start robbing people. We will not allow that.”

Ripples Nigeria had reported that police officers fired tear gas at protesters as they tried to disperse hundreds of people demonstrating against police brutality.

One year ago, thousands marched in Nigeria for the #EndSARS movement to protest the activities of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a unit accused of police brutality.

In the days leading up to Wednesday´s demonstration, police warned protesters against any public gatherings, threatening to arrest anyone who disobeyed the directive.

Four protesters were arrested in Lagos just as demonstrators started to arrive at the Lekki tollgate to mark the anniversary. More were arrested and put into police vans as police shot teargas into the air.

#EndSARS: Lekki massacre fake, CNN lied – Lai Mohammed

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has described the Lekki toll gate massacre of October last year as false.

He stated this in a statement on Wednesday tagged: “Phantom Massacre at Lekki tollgate” to mark the one-year anniversary of the protest.

Mohammed said the narrative by CNN that Nigerian soldiers massacred protesters at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos State on October 20, 2020 was ‘fake news’.

The minister also accused Amnesty International of speculating fake news regarding the EndSARS massacre at Lekki Tollgate.

He: “Today marks the first anniversary of the phantom massacre at Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, which was the culmination of an otherwise peaceful protest that was later hijacked by hoodlums. At earlier press conferences, I had called the reported massacre at the toll gate the first massacre in the world without blood or bodies.

“One year later, and despite ample opportunities for the families of those allegedly killed and those alleging a massacre to present evidence, there has been none: No bodies, no families, no convincing evidence, nothing. Where are the families of those who were reportedly killed at the toll gate? Did they show up at the Judicial Panel of Inquiry? If not, why?

Sadly, the champions of a massacre at the Lekki Toll Gate, including Amnesty International and CNN, have continued to shamelessly hold on to their unproven stand. Recall, gentlemen, that after bandying different figures, Amnesty International finally settled at about 12 people killed.

“On its part, CNN went from 38 people killed to two to just one, after a supposed global exclusive even when the network had no reporter on ground at the Lekki Toll Gate on Oct. 20th, 2020.

On Monday, the Judicial Panel of Inquiry that was set up by the Lagos State Government after the EndSARS protest wrapped up its sitting. During the sitting, CNN was summoned but it never showed up, thus missing a great opportunity to prove its allegation of massacre at the toll gate.”

Also, Amnesty International had a golden opportunity to convince the world, but it rather opted for issuing meaningless press releases.

“In its latest attempt to grasp at straws and redeem whatever is left of its battered credibility on this issue, CNN has continued with its baseless report that soldiers shot at protesters.”

Driver who survived #LekkiMassacre joins #EndSARS memorial protest (Video)

Nicholas Okpe, one of the victims of the October 20, 2020 Lekki shooting, on Wednesday joined #EndSARS memorial protest to honour those who lost their lives.

CorrectNG reported earlier today that Nicholas who is a driver, spoke to The Punch while recounting his experience at the Lekki tollgate one year after he was shot.

When asked if he would join the protest again, Nicholas had said; ”By the Grace of God, despite my ordeal, I will join the protest because we are not going there to make trouble but just to mark a one year anniversary to remember our fallen heroes who fought for the betterment of our country. What is the hope of our children if we don’t take action today?

Our intention is not for violence but just to mark the one year anniversary. We will carry placards and lay wreaths for those who died. What if I had died? Wouldn’t I have wanted to be honoured? So many victims of #EndSARS are still in detention. We will also speak on their behalf to demand their release.”

In a video from the ongoing #EndSARS Memorial Protest, the young man was being interviewed about his participation last year.

He showed journalists his chest and back area where the bullet hit him and exited.

Why #ENDSARS anniversary protest will not be allowed in Lagos – Police

The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday ruled out the #ENDSARS anniversary protest in the state.

Youths in the state had planned at the Lekki tollgate, the epicenter of last year’s #ENDSARS protest, to mark the first anniversary of the rally against police brutality in the country.

However, in a statement issued by the command’s spokesman, Adekunle Ajisebutu, the police urged the people of the state to commemorate the anniversary in their respective homes.

The statement read: ”The attention of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn to a post being circulated on the social media insinuating that the police in Lagos had agreed to allow street protests in commemoration of the one year #ENDSARS anniversary on 20th October, 2021.

On the contrary, the police will only allow an indoor and virtual event in commemoration of the #EndSARS anniversary and will provide adequate security at the venue (s) if known. This is in recognition of the rights of every Nigerian to express his or her interest.

“We wish we could permit such street protests. However, intelligence at our disposal has revealed plans by some faceless groups or individuals to stage an anti-#ENDSARS anniversary protest in the state the same day.

“In view of the conflicting interest between the pro and anti- #ENDSARS anniversary groups and threat to cause mayhem, the command once again warns both groups against any form of street protest between now and 20th October, 2021 and beyond.

It is acknowledged that citizens have the right to peaceful protests. However, in this instance having carried out a critical security assessment and intelligence report at the disposal of the Lagos Command in respect of the planned protests and attendant implications on public safety, the Command considers it inappropriate to allow such protests to hold. It will not stand aloof and allow breakdown of law and order which the protests may cause.

“To avoid a recurrence of the gory protests of last year during which some innocent Nigerians including police officers were gruesomely murdered, private and public property plundered and maliciously destroyed, the police will not abdicate their responsibilities of protection of lives and property by allowing such avoidable incident happen again in the state.

Therefore, in the interest of security and public safety, the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, wishes to warn the organisers of the protests that the police will deploy all legitimate means to stop or neutralise the planned protests.

“Parents, guardians are admonished to warn their children against participating in the protests. Similarly, youths and other individuals or groups planning to take part in the protests are further warned in their own interest to shelve the plan.”

Students and members of staff of the University of Ibadan have been thrown into mourning following the sudden deaths of two undergraduates of the institution within 24 hours.

One of the victims, Adegoke Adedayo, a final-year student of the Department of History, was shot dead during a robbery close to the UI/Bodija Road.

The incident was said to have happened in the early hours of Sunday.

Also, a 200-level student of the Department of Microbiology Faculty of Science, Ayomide Adeyemo, was knocked down by a vehicle while crossing the road close to the school’s main gate.

The Director of Communication of the university, Tunji Oladejo, who confirmed the robbery incident, said the police had started investigation.

He said, “The matter has been reported to the Bodija Police Division. The Oyo State Police Command is conducting a discreet investigation on the sad development. The body of the late student is with the University College Hospital for autopsy.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, Adewale Osifeso, did not respond to inquiries from our correspondents.

The President-elect of the UI Students’ Union Government, Yinka Adewole, said efforts to save Adedayo proved abortive.

“The Dean and Deputy Dean, Students Affairs, University of Ibadan, Head of Department of History and the security unit of the university made several efforts to ensure that the student survived, but he died.

“We (SUG) are planning to organise prayers and sensitisation on safety tips for students.

The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Oluwole Olusegun, said the agency received a report that suspected robbers shot somebody around the Preboye area between 7pm and 8pm.

He said, “Around 9pm the same day, another person was shot at the Civic Centre area by the same set of gang. Our men are investigating the cases.”

Meanwhile, the outgoing SUG President, Olusegun Akeju, said the remains of Adedayo were buried on Monday.

Akeju called for a thorough investigation into the killing of the final-year student, adding that security agencies should beef up security around Agbowo and other areas where students of the university staying off-campus lived.

He said, “We buried him this evening (Monday). We also met with the DPO in charge of the area and we demanded credible investigation into the incident and they said they had already started investigating it.

“We have also met with representatives of the government to make sure that the case is not swept under the carpet. What is also more important is that we want them to beef up security around UI and its environment.”

NCC outlines consequence of linking NIN with another person’s SIM

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has cautioned the general public against linking their National Identification Number (NIN) to another person’s Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards, irrespective of affiliations with said person.

This warning was issued on Monday by the NCC Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, Efosa Idehen, during the third run Telecom Consumer Town Hall on Radio (TCTHR) programme, broadcast live on Human Rights Radio, 101.1 FM in Abuja.

The event was hosted on the platform of ‘NCC Digital Signature on Radio’.

The NCC Digital Signature on Radio is the flagship radio programme of the Commission created to educate the general public on the mandates of the Commission.

According to Idehen, “on no account should a telecom consumer allow another person to register a SIM with another person’s NIN.”

The NCC official further clarified that this was for the protection of the user due to any liabilities or negative consequences arising from the use of another person’s SIM.

“If the person, whose SIM is linked to your line use his own SIM to commit crimes or any form of atrocities, it is easy to be traced to you and then, you will be dealt with because the SIM is linked to your NIN,” he said.

During the radio programme, telecoms consumers were also reminded repeatedly of the October 31, 2021 deadline for NIN-SIM integration.
