The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has extended its ongoing strike again.
The decision was taken after the National Executive Council meeting at the union’s headquarters at the University of Abuja on Monday morning, August 29. The ASUU strike began on February 14, 2022, and was initially to last for 4 weeks.
However, on March 14, exactly one month after, ASUU extended its ongoing industrial action by another two months to afford the government more time to address all of its demands. The strike has now entered its 196th day.
The union is on strike over the inability of the Federal Government to implement previous agreements both parties entered into.
The lecturers’ agitations include funding for the revitalization of public universities, earned academic allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution, promotion arrears and others.

The dethroned Emir of Zurmi in Zamfara State, Abubakar Atiku, has died in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. Atiku died in a private hospital following a protracted illness.
Recall that the deceased was dethroned along with the Emir of Dansadau, Husaini Umar on April 27, 2021, for allegedly aiding banditry in their respective emirates.
A family member, Sani Zurmi, who confirmed the death to Punch, said that the remains of the deceased were yet to be brought to Nigeria for burial.
“His remains are still in Dubai due to non availability of flight to bring the deceased back home for burial,” said Zurmi.
A 74-year-old man from Kogi State identified as Mallam Muhammad Awal, has married for the first time. Awal wedded 45-year-old divorcee, Mallama Rahmat Muhammad, in Lokoja, the Kogi state capital on Sunday, August 28.
Speaking to journalists on why he had stayed this late before getting married, the septuagenarian said lack of money discouraged him from approaching a woman for marriage.
“I have always been afraid I might fail in my duty of care to a spouse if I married and it is something I fear and don’t want to joke with. I am also afraid of separation from my spouse. I know if I fail to take care of her, she might either leave me or cheat on me with another man, which I would not like. So, to avoid all of that, I dismissed the idea of marriage altogether. A groom, Obinna Dike, and five others including relatives and friends were found dead in Akutara Village, Adani community, Uzo-Uwani local government area of Enugu state.
Spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, who disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, August 28, said the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ahmed Ammani has ordered full-scale investigation into the incident.
According to the PPRO, the victims attended Obinna’s traditional wedding ceremony in Obollor-Eke in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State on Friday, August 26, and continued with the celebration when they returned to Adani.
The following morning, Saturday, August 27, they were all found unconscious in a room with foamy discharge from their mouths. The victims were rushed to a hospital where six were confirmed dead while eight others are responding to treatment.
“Following the receipt of a report alleging the Sudden and Unnatural Death (SUD) of six (6) persons and the hospitalization of eight others, at Akutara Village in Adani Community of Uzo-Uwani LGA, on 27/08/2022 at about 0930hrs, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Ahmed Ammani, fdc, has ordered the State CID Enugu to launch a full-scale investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death and hospitalization of the victims,” the statement read.
“He commiserates with the families and friends of the deceased, while calling on residents of the community to maintain peace and support the Police with necessary information in the investigation.
“Meanwhile, preliminary investigation reveals that one of the confirmed deceased victims, Obinna Dike aged 31, attended his own traditional marriage ceremony at Obollor-Eke in Udenu LGA on 26/08/2022, with his relatives and other victims of the incident. They thereafter went back home and continued with the celebration.
“However, the following morning, none of them came out of the room where they slept, causing the door to be forced opened, with all of them in the room found to be unconscious with foamy discharge from their mouths.
“They were immediately moved to the hospital, where six (6) of them were confirmed dead and deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the others are responding to treatment. Further development will be communicated.”
Operatives of the Jigawa State Police Command in collaboration with a vigilante group, have arrested two suspected kidnappers and rescused a victim.
Spokesman of the command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, who disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, August 28, said the suspects including a 30-year-old woman, were arrested in Ringim Local Government Area of the state.
“A joint operatives from Ringim Area Command in conjunction with local vigilante group, led by Ringim Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Shehu Hamdullahi, acted on credible and actionable intelligence raided suspected kidnapper’s hideout at Nisan Marke Herdsmen Settlement in Ringim LGA, and arrested two (2) suspected kidnappers,” the statement read.
“On 24th August, 2022, at about 0800hrs, Intel at our disposal revealed that, one Muhammad Sama’ila ‘m’ age 45yrs of Madari village, Warawa LGA, Kano State was seen with matchet cuts all over his body. “On receipt of the information, a team of Policemen swung into action, visited the scene of crime and conveyed the victim to hospital
“While on admission at hospital, after regained his consciousness, the victim revealed that, he was kidnapped on Tuesday 22nd, August, 2022, at about 0130hrs from Madari Village in Warawa LGA of Kano State and taken to Nisan Marke Herdsmen.
“When he attempted to escape from the abductors, he was attacked by one of the kidnappers and inflicted injuries in his body.
“On the same date at about 0850hrs, a team of Policemen stormed the Area, where one of the kidnappers named Abdurrazaq Musa ‘m’ age 40yrs of Gurgunna village, Babura LGA, Jigawa State was arrested and the phone that belongs to the victim which was used for ransom negotiation was recovered in his possession.
“Furthermore, one Hassana Jimau ‘f’ age 30yrs of Nisan Marke village was also arrested at about 1230hrs.
“During interrogation, both the suspects were confessed to have abducted the victim with eight (8) other gang members. Effort to trace their accomplices is on top gear.
Meanwhile, the suspects have been handed over to the team of anti-kidnapping section, Kano State Police Command for discreet investigation.
The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Police Command, CP Aliyu Sale Tafida psc, appreciated the effort of officers and urged the public to always avail Police with credible and reliable information at right time.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that he has no preferred candidate among those contesting the 2023 presidential election.
The former President said this while paying former Head of State, General Abdulsalam Abubakar a visit in Minna on Sunday August 28.
According to Obasanjo, he only has a national agenda. He said; “I don’t have a special candidate, I have a national agenda.
“I came to see my brother who has been a little indisposed. I had plans to visit him when he was still in London, but the day I arrived London was the day he returned home.“So that is why I decided to come and see him at home. He is very special so I had to come.
“If there is anyone who is indisposed, I will visit and I am still strong.”

A Taekwondo athlete, Maria Uchenna Raphael, has been killed in a motor accident in Nasarawa State.
The deceased, who won a silver medal for team Nasarawa in the just concluded Bayelsa Open Taekwondo, was crushed to death by a truck in Lafia, the state capital on Friday, August 26.
The Nasarawa State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, in a statement on Saturday, said the deceased had gone to purchase some items from a grocery store along UAC road few hours after returning home from the championship in Yenagoa, which ended on August 24th, 2022.
The statement signed by spokesperson of the ministry, Uche Amos, described the death as an unquantifiable loss, adding that her immense contributions to sports in the state would be sorely missed.
“Words fail us as we were greeted today by the ugly news on the sudden death of one of our illustrious medal-winning athletes, Maria Raphael,” the statement read.
“We gathered from reliable sources that Maria was crushed to death by an articulated vehicle(trailer) along UAC road, Lafia, while on her way to purchase some items from a grocery store in the evening of Friday, 26th August, 2022, few hours after returning home from a championship in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where she represented Nasarawa State.
“At the 15th edition of the Panamai West African and Cottage Mills Taekwondo Championship held early this month in Lagos, the late Maria Raphael was one of the athletes who inspired Team Nasarawa to finish 4th position on the medals’ table as she won a Bronze medal in the -46kg Women’s Category at the Championship.
“She also won silver medal for Team Nasarawa at the recently concluded Bayelsa Open Taekwondo Championships held from 21st to 24th August, 2022, in Yenagoa, South-South Nigeria.
“The deceased was a committed, dedicated and focused athlete, winning medals of different categories for Nasarawa State, ranging from Cadet, Junior, and until her untimely demise, Senior Category
“Maria brought lots of glory and honour to Nasarawa State at different sporting championships.
Air Peace management has confirmed that its Flight P47154 which departed Lagos at 12pm on Saturday August 27, 2022, for Owerri, could not land due to a bird strike.
The airline management in a brief communique released on Sunday August 28, said the strike got the bird stuck on the left main landing gear of the craft.
The strike also affected the operating parameters of the landing gear which made the pilots follow regulatory safety procedures by returning to Lagos where they landed the aircraft safely without any incident.
Passengers disembarked normally and another aircraft has been deployed to operate the flight.

A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Samaila Sabo Awudu, has been murdered by suspected robbers in Adamawa State.
It was gathered that the assailants invaded his room on Friday, August 26, 2022, stabbed him and made away with his laptop, mobile phone and other valuables.
The 28-year-old Federal University Wukari (FUWUKARI) Taraba State graduate fondly known as Sam the Drummer, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead.
Following the killing of the corps member, friends, colleagues and members of his community in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State, called on the Government and management of the NYSC to ensure justice prevails in the matter.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, August 27, Hon. Danjuma Usman Shiddi, Member representing Wukari/Ibi Federal Constituency and Chairman House Committee on National Security, said he will leave no stone unturned to unearth the circumstances surrounding the murder.
The Sokoto State Police Command has disclosed that men of the force are still searching for the suspected killers of Deborah Samuel, the 200-level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto state, who was gruesomely murdered by her fellow students.
Deborah was hacked to death in May 2022, over allegations that she made a comment on her school’s WhatsApp platform which her Muslim colleagues considered to blaspheme Prophet Mohammed (SAW).
DSP Sanusi Abubakar, the spokesman for the command, who spoke with Punch over the case, said those arrested by the police months back were not the prime suspects. According to Abubakar, they were only among those who organised the riot, adding that those arrested were still in remand custody as ordered by the court.
Abubakar further said that the prime suspects were still at large, adding that efforts were ongoing to arrest them.
The police spokesperson stated, “Those ones we arrested then, though not the suspected killers, contributed to the violent riot and were arraigned in court where the judge ordered that they should be remanded.
Concerning those suspected killers, we have circulated their pictures to media houses and sent our intelligence to every part of the state.
“We are still on the lookout for them and we are confident of arresting them wherever they may be hiding. We will flush them out and arraign them before a competent court of law.’’
He promised that the command would not be biased on the case, adding that the state Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Gumel, would ensure that justice is served.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has suspended two Supernumerary Police Officers, Obaze Blessing with SPY number 5709, and Obaze Emmanuella Uju with SPY number 5708, with immediate effect, for breach of the provisions of the Police Act, 2020, and The Nigeria Police Guidelines for Recruitment/Promotion/Discipline of Supernumerary Police (SPY) 2013 by the Inspector-General of Police, as captured in a video posted by one of the officers in a viral video on August 3, 2022.
The officers went viral recently after TikTok videos of them looking sexy in and out of their uniforms went viral.
A statement released by CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi says the officers who are Suprenumerary police officers dressed in uniforms that are not permitted for their level and also violated the Social media policy of the police.
The statement in part reads
”By the combined effects of the Police Act, 2020 and the Nigeria Police Guidelines for Recruitment/Promotion/Discipline of Supernumerary Police (SPY),2013 was established solely to complement the services of regular Police Officers when needed by Ministries, Departments and Agencies/Multi-National Companies, and Banks who make requests and upon approval pay for their training and cover their emoluments for the period of their engagement. (Sections 21-24 of the Police Act, 2020).
It is equally important to mention that in line with Section 25 (2) (3) of the Police Act, 2020 and the Nigeria Police Guidelines for Recruitment/Promotion/Discipline of Supernumerary Police (SPY), 2013issued by the Inspector-General of Police (Guidelines for SPYs), the mode of dressing of SPY police mandates its SPY officers above the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police not to wear uniforms. Similarly, extant laws delineate the Supernumerary uniform.
It states that they must be on their approved uniform, ash coloured shirt with “SPY” inscriptions all over, over black with shoulder badge carrying the word “SUPERNUMERARY”. Supernumerary Officers adorning police black, neon blue or camouflage uniforms run afoul of the law and would be adequately sanctioned.
The suspended supernumerary officers – Obaze Blessing with SPY number 5709, and Obaze Emmanuella Uju with SPY number 5708, adorned themselves in conventional police officers’ uniforms contrary to the code regulating the SPY service. One of them similarly adorned the rank of Superintendent of Police which is contrary to extant laws.
Above all, they portrayed themselves in the viral video and other videos as undisciplined and unprofessional, in contravention of the Police Social Media Policy, with acts glorifying ill-gotten wealth and ill-morals, which has received wide condemnation from members of the public.”
Adejobi called on all supernumerary officers to adhere strictly with extant laws as strict sanctions would apply to erring officers.
The Force is similarly revisiting other matters of infractions against members of the Supernumerary Police with a view to handing out necessary sanctions to other defaulters.
The Nigerian man who was caught on camera assaulting a police officer in Lagos state has been arrested and will be arraigned in court.
According to the Lagos state police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the accused identified as Billy King Tokunbo, drove against traffic and was arrested.
He said the accused man’s Toyota Corolla car with registration number LSR 430 FT has been impounded and that he will be arraigned in court for his traffic offence and assault on a police officer.
The lifeless bodies of two toddlers, Simikahle Asiphile Siyaya and Seluleko Amukelani Ngema, have been found floating in a river in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.

The rapper, who disclosed this on Thursday, August 25, said his cousin identified as Tammy was burnt to death over a crime he didn’t commit.
The incident happened at Tombia area of Yenagoa, on Wednesday, August 24.
