Anambra man shoots brother dead over electricity bill

A man, Peter Orji, has allegedly killed his elder brother, Godwin, during an argument bordering on the payment of N1,500 electrical bill at their residence in Uruagu, in the Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

It was gathered that the brothers were at home when they started arguing over Peter’s refusal to pay N1,500 for his monthly electrical bill on Tuesday.

As a measure to get him to pay the money, it was learnt that power supply into Peter’s flat in the house was disconnected.

A source in the community said Peter, who was angered by the development, stormed into his flat, brought out a gun and allegedly shot his brother to death.

After perpetrating the crime, the suspect reportedly rushed to the nearest police station and surrendered himself to the police to avoid being lynched by angry mob.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, however, said the suspect was arrested contrary to claims that he willingly surrendered himself to the police.

Ikenga said the wife of the suspect was first arrested at the crime scene, adding that the couple were currently in police custody.

Ikenga said the state Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng, had ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation.

INEC Worker Killed During Voter Registration is being buried today

A staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Anthony Nwokorie, who was killed in April by unknown gunmen in Imo State, will be buried on Thursday (today).

INEC on its Twitter handle mourned the 35-year-old and revealed that he was killed at Nkwo-Ihitte (Polling Unit 004) while on official duty during the just concluded Continuous Voter Registration in Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State.

Nwokorie was shot dead on April 14, 2022.

Lexus SUV, Toyota Camry recovered as EFCC arrests 41 suspected fraudsters in Awka

Operatives of the Enugu Zonal Command of the EFCC have arrested forty-one (41) suspected internet fraudsters in Awka, Anambra State.

They were arrested on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, following actionable intelligence on their alleged involvement in cyber crimes and other related activities.

A statement released by the commission says sixteen(16) of the suspects were arrested at Umuodu Tansi Road, Awka, Anambra State while the remaining 25 were arrested at Umudu Okpuno Village, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The commission gave the names of the suspects as Eze Stanley Chineze, Emmanuel Chijioke Ejikeme, Chinonso Edwin Abonyi, Emmanuel Akoi Chibuike, Henry Umenyi Chukwualuka, Ayo Iteze Chidiebere, Emeka Justice, Emmanuel Ayakem, Ememuo Innocent Ifeanyi and Odinaka Udeh.

Others are: Okonkwo Stanley Chukwuma, Ezeakolam Godswill Chihurumnanya, Emmanuel Mgbakor kenechukwu, Benneth Odinaka, Ndefor Chukwudi, Ngadi Chima, Akalam Lucky Ibuchi, Akalam Michael, Justus Akalam Chunazom, Akalam Kenneth , David Monday Ebuka, Uchechukwu Kingsley Ebuka, Henry Echezona, Onyedika Chukwu, Abuchi Awa, Henry Adumaka, Chidera Chika, Malachi Asonbe, Cosmos Obidimma, Akuma Wisdom, Agwu Victor, Godwin Okoro, Obumneke Nwankwo, Igboanugo Charles, Ibeh Chisom, Agbafuna Ifeanyi, Chukwu Joseph, Chukwu Benard, Anson Ugochukwu, Mathew Chukwuemeka and Temple Emmanuel.

The commission added that items recovered from them are several mobiles phones, laptops, one Lexus RX350 Sports Utility Vehicle, one Lexus ES350 car, another unregistered Lexus ES350 car and one Toyota Camry car.

Suspected female armed robber and accomplices allegedly snatch motorcycle at gunpoint in Delta

Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested three suspected armed robbers and recovered one English pistol from their possession.

Spokesperson of the command, DSP Bright Edafe, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, September 1, said the suspects including a female, Esther Nwoko, snatched a motorcycle from a victim at gunpoint in Issele-Uku.

“On the 25/8/2022 at about 0800hrs, a case of suspected stolen unregistered motorcycle was reported by an indigene of Onicha-Uku at Isseluku-Uku Police Station. On the strength of the complaint, the DPO Issele-Uku detailed detectives to investigate.

An intelligence led investigation culminated to the arrest of the prime suspect, Iyegbunuwe Oluchukwu ‘m’ of Issele-Uku,” the statement read.

“The suspect led the detectives to their hideout at Onicha-Ugbo in Aniocha North LGA, where two other suspects, one Okwudili Ozah ‘m’ and Esther Nwoko ‘f’, were arrested and One (1) English revolver pistol, fifteen (15) rounds of live ammunition, and six (6) expended ammunition were recovered.

“Suspects allegedly stole the motorcycle at gun point and it’s suspected to be in the possession of one of their accomplice Chidinma Nwoko ‘m’, the husband to Esther Nwoko. Effort is on to arrest the other members of the gang.”

Social media platform, Twitter, has finally released its highly requested Edit Tweet feature.

This comes after many years of request and it will be available first to some paying Twitter subscribers later in September.

According to Twitter, the feature is currently undergoing “internal testing.”

“Tweets will be able to be edited a few times in the 30 minutes following their publication,” according to a Twitter blog post.

“Edited Tweets will appear with an icon, time stamp and label so it’s clear to readers that the original Tweet has been modified.”

LASTMA seeks collaboration with Public Complaints Commission

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has sought to collaborate with the Public Complaints Commission for sustainable peace in the State.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Bolaji Oreagba, made this call on Wednesday during a courtesy visit of the Commission to the LASTMA Headquarters in Oshodi, Lagos State.

This was contained in a statement by LASTMA’s Director, Public Affairs Unit, Adebayo Taofiq, made available to The PUNCH on Thursday.

Oreagba said,

“We are ready to cooperate with the Commission during investigation on any complaints from the public and information sharing where necessary”

“We wish to add by informing well meaning and concern Lagos residents and motorists that we have various windows through which complaints can be channelled for prompt action.

“Such complaints sent via any of the above window shall be investigated dispassionately with despatch.”

During his presentation, the Commissioner, Public Complaints Commission Hon. Hafeez Adekunle Odunewu, said the Commission aims at correcting administrative anomalies in the discharge of public functions as they affect the citizens and residents between person(s) to person(s), especially on administrative procedure that can cause injustice within the administrative jurisdiction.

He commended the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority LASTMA for effectively discharging it’s statutory responsibilities.

Families declare Imo wedding guests missing

Three wedding guests have been declared missing by their families in Imo state.

The three young men identified as Alaefula Chimuru, Madu Promise, and Victor Chibuike, did not return to their homes in Owerri after they left a wedding ceremony at Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the state on Sunday August 28.

Brother of one of the missing persons, Fortune Madu told Punch that the families had made a statement to the police.

He said;

“They left a wedding ceremony at Isiala Mbano on Sunday and didn’t get home. Up till now, we haven’t seen them. Their phone numbers are permanently switched off. We have sent them messages on their social media handles and no reply.

We have reported to the police.” An activist and journalist, Theodore Uba who also confirmed the development said;

“This is to inform the general public that these three young men whose pictures appear below have been declared missing.

“The three young men with names; ALAEFULA CHIMURU COLLINS, MMADU PROMISE AND VICTOR CHIBUIKE who [are] based in Owerri, Imo State attended a wedding ceremony in Isiala Mbano LGA on Sunday 28th August 2022 with a grey colour Lexus RX 330, and have been unable to return back to their respective homes from the event.

“[Efforts] to reach them through their mobile devices and social media handles proves abortive. None of their family members has been able to figure out their current location up till now.

“However, we have launched a search for them and have also reported the matter to State CID Owerri Imo State for their swift intervention.

“If you have any information regarding the sudden disappearance of these three young men or update about this ongoing investigation, please contact me or report to the nearest police station.”

Two dead, eight rescued in Kano building collapse

Two people died and eight others were rescued after the collapse of the three-story building at Beirut GSM Market in Kano.

Giving an update on the building collapse which occurred on Tuesday evening, August 30, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Kano State branch, said that one person died at the hospital among the nine victims so far rescued alive.

The Secretary of the branch, Musa Abdullah, said that a staff of Kano Electricity Distribution Company also lost his life in the disaster, bringing the death toll to 2.

“A staff of Kano Electricity Distribution Company, who was trying to disconnect the building from the high tension but unfortunately, the power that was already shut down from the transformer, technically relayed back and trapped him which led to his death on the spot,” he said.

In a statement by the Kano Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi, the agency said eight victims had been successfully rescued.

He listed the names of the survivors as: Naziru Abdulkadir, 24.

Magaji Abubakar, 27.

Abdurauf Muhammad, 38.

Minjibir Ibrahim, 46.

Ahmad Buhari Haruna,16.

Sadiq Haruna,19

Abdurashid Basiru, 36, and Danladi Lawan, 29.

Jealous man kills friend who bought new car, buries body in his house in Kogi

Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man for killing his friend and burying the body in his house in Lokoja.

According to Nigerian Tribune, the incident happened in Felele area of Lokoja where the deceased identified as Kehinde Ajayi, resided with his family.

It was gathered that the deceased who bought a Toyota Sienna ash colour with registration number LSD 228 HJ, was killed on July 24, 2022.

The arrested killer who is into Air condition repair, lured late Kehinde to an unknown place at about 10 am on that fateful day to celebrate the new car he just bought.

A source disclosed further that late Kehinde, the suspect and others went to the place but Kehinde was never seen alive again.

After family members reported Kehinde missing to the Police, the suspected killer was arrested last week and he confessed to have killed the deceased and stolen his car.

On Monday, August 29, the suspect took policemen to his house where he buried the body of Kehinde.

It was further gathered that angry youths who were around when police recovered the body attacked the suspect’s house.

Spokesperson of the command, SP William Ayah, who confirmed the incident said that Kehinde’s remains have been recovered and investigation is still on to arrest others who might have been involved in the murder.

ASUU kicks as IBBU pulls out of strike and directs lecturers to resume

The management of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, Niger State on Tuesday, August 30, directed its staff to pull out of the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The institution also asked staff to resume work on September 5 for the 2021/2022 second semester academic session.

The university in a statement by its Deputy Registrar, Information, Alhaji Baba Akote, said the decision to direct both academic and non-academic staff to resume was taken by the university’s Governing Council at its 55th regular meeting held on August 30.

However, the chapter’s chairman of ASUU, Dr Kudu Dangana, said that they had not suspended the strike and, therefore, would not succumb to the directive, according to DailyTrust.

He said the letter of extension of the strike had already been served on the management and wondered why a statement for resumption was issued.

“Any student that resumes is wasting his money and time or he is coming to see the campus. We have not called off the strike,” he said.

Country singer Luke Bell found dead at age 32

Singer-songwriter Luke Bell has died at the age of 32.

The country artist was first reported missing in Arizona on August 20. He was with his close friend, musician Matt Kinman when he went missing.

The singer was discovered on Monday, August 29, “not far from where he disappeared”. Kinman confirmed the news to Saving Country Music.

He told the outlet that Bell severely struggled with bipolar disorder. After virtually disappearing from the public eye years ago, Bell’s mental health seemed to improve due to medication and treatment.

“But while out West recently, Luke’s mental state took a turn for the worse. While in Tucson with Matt Kinman, he ran off while Matt went to get something to eat,” the publication reports. An official cause of death has not yet been revealed.

Bell caused a stir in the country music scene in 2014 with his debut album “Don’t Mind if I Do”.

He signed a record deal with Thirty Tigers in 2016. Later that year, he dropped his self-titled album which received critical acclaim.

While promoting the record, he talked about tuning out the noise on his rise to stardom. In 2018, he won Best Honky Tonk Male at the Ameripolitan Awards in Memphis, Tennessee.

Fake Lagos driver robs passengers of N1.2m valuables

A 39-year-old man, Charles Inibu, has been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court sitting in Yaba, Lagos State, for allegedly disguising as a commercial driver to rob unsuspecting passengers of their valuables in the Victoria Island area of the state.

The defendant was charged before Chief Magistrate P.E Nwaka, on two counts bordering on conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.

The prosecution, led by Sgt. Juliana, said Inibu pretended to be a commercial bus driver at the time of the incident within Victoria Island in Lagos, to lure passengers into his bus.However, Inibu and others still at large, dispossessed the victims of their belongings.

The charges read in part,

“That you, Charles Inibu, and others now at large, within July 31, 2022, to August 8, 2022, within Victoria Island, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit, robbery.

“That you, Charles Inibu, and others still at large, within the same date and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did pretend to be genuine commercial bus drivers, as a result, you robbed innocent passengers of their belongings.

”The prosecution alleged that Inibu and his fleeing accomplices robbed nine passengers of their phones, adding that the total value of property stolen was N1,231,000.

The offences were said to be punishable under Sections 299 and 297(1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The court did not take the defendant’s plea.Chief Magistrate Nwaka adjourned the matter till September 22 for mention.

Naomi Silekunola has hinted at being harassed for “walking away from abuse” and she warned that she will not stay silent about it.

The former evangelist, who shares a son with the Ooni of Ife, took to her page to state that “walking away from a relationship does not mean one should commit suicide.”

“No woman deserves to be bullied. Walking away from abuse should not take away your fundamental human rights and dignity as a woman.”
