”This incident is capable of making citizens to be fearful of assisting soldiers”- President Buhari condemns killing of Yobe Islamic cleric by soldiers who he gave a lift

President Buhari has strongly condemned what he calls “the unprovoked and cold-blooded murder of a Yobe State-based Islamic cleric Sheikh Goni Aisami, by a callous soldier he had offered a lift as confirmed by the Police.”

The Muslim cleric was hacked to death by two soldiers who he offered a lift at Jajimaji, the headquarters of Karasuwa local government council in Yobe state on Saturday, August 20.

Reacting to the incident, President Buhari in a statement released by Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, said ;

“this barbaric murder of a compassionate man by a soldier he had assisted has no place in our training as soldiers, and it negates the entire ethos of military life which is anchored on discipline and respect for the sanctity of innocent lives.”

”As the Commander-in-Chief, I am personally outraged by this criminal and wicked act by a law enforcement official trained to protect life.

By our training, we are guided by a code of conduct that frowns on this kind of reckless and criminal act. It is not in our character and training to put innocent citizens in harm’s way.

Of course, the action of this soldier is an isolated incident involving an individual, but it is capable of staining the collective image of our military.

This incident is capable of making our fellow citizens to be fearful of assisting soldiers, thereby destroying the bond of trust between our military and the civilians.

I call on the military authorities to punish the perpetrators of this heinous crime without delay, and flush out other elements with such criminal tendencies,” President Buhari said.

The President condoled with Yobe State Government, the people of the State, and the family of the victim of this tragedy.

EFCC kicks against creation of Electoral Offences Commission

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has opposed the creation of a National Electoral Offences Commission.

Abdulrasheed Bawa, Chairman of EFCC, who was represented by Deborah Ademu-Eteh, an EFCC Assistant Commander, at a public hearing organised by the house of representatives committee on electoral matters for a bill to establish the National Electoral Offences Commission on Tuesday August 23, said the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the police, EFCC and other law enforcement agencies are already empowered by extant laws to investigate and prosecute electoral crimes.

Bawa said;

“There is no need to create an agency solely for the purpose of investigating and prosecuting electoral offences most especially when our electoral process is seasonal in nature and elections are held once in four years in the country.

“Furthermore, it is our suggestion that the existing law enforcement agencies should be strengthened to achieve maximum output instead of creating a new agency for investigation and prosecution of electoral offences in the light of the ongoing plan to implement the Oronsanye Committee’s proposal by the Federal Government Of Nigeria.”

”He presented himself as a responsible person”- Ogun monarch speaks on why he bestowed chieftaincy title on singer Portable

The Onitigbo of Tigbo-Ilu Land, in Ota, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, Olabode Thomas-Fagbayi, has justified why he conferred a chieftaincy title on the controversial singer, Habeeb Okikiola popularly known as Portable.

On Monday, August 22, Portable took to his social media handles to announce his new title as the Amuludun of Tigbo Awori land.

He shared photos of himself at the ceremony where he was decorated with the chieftaincy title.

Shortly after posting the photos, some Nigerians accused the monarch of collecting bribe to bestow the honor on Portable who they said was unbefitting of any title.

However, in a chat with Premiumtimes, the monarch said he never knew the famous artist until recently and that he bestowed the title on him because he is respectful.

“I visited a school in my domain where I have gotten a report of misbehaviour among the pupils and students of the school.

So, I went to the school to talk briefly with them. It was there that I was told that somebody called Portable was passing through my domain and was throwing money at people, and in the process, many got injured.

Because of that, I summoned him to my palace, and he came twice, but I wasn’t at the palace when he came. So, one day, I was walking on the road, and I saw him driving; I called for him, and he immediately came with his boys, and they all prostrated on the road.”he said

The monarch also mentioned that the singer has his roots in Tigbo town and is well behaved. “His mum is from Tigbo, and he too lives here; he presented himself as a responsible person, and we take him as that.

Some people might have reservations about him, but even at that, he is our son.”he said The monarch added that the singer had also shown readiness to be part of the celebration of ‘Tigbo day’.

Mr Thomas-Fagbayi, however, debunked social media claims that he was paid to honor the famous artist and insisted that he is a monarch whom “God has blessed.”

Police officers arrest bride at her wedding reception over dismissed theft case

A wedding reception turned into a nightmare when plain-clothed police officers stormed the venue and arrested the bride over a dismissed criminal case.

The wedding was underway on Saturday, August 20, at Kakiika Technical School in Mbarara City, Uganda, when the bride Ms. Christine Natuhera was picked up and taken into custody.

She was arrested on allegations that she stole money from her previous workplace. Her manager at Centenary Bank, Mirembe Henry, had accused her of stealing from the company.

While the matter was investigated as a criminal complaint, police advised both parties to seek a civil solution at the end of July, according to a police press release. The case was then dismissed due to lack of evidence.

However, after opening the case again in August, the regional chief decided to charge the woman with theft and order her arrest.

Cops said the officers involved caused a “public nuisance”, and that they may have done so at her former boss Henry’s behest.

They even used Henry’s vehicle to transport her to the jail, reports said. The groom, Mr Edson Tumukunde, said he and other guests tried to stop his bride’s arrest.

“The guests attempted to stop them. One woman grabbed my wife by the hair and pulled her out of structure,” Mr Tumukunde said Monday, August 22.

One of the guests grabbed Ms Natuhera from the officers and took her into a car to escape, but police swiftly followed in hot pursuit. The officers later intercepted them and drove the bride to a police station.

“She spent the night in the cell. Our guests waited at the reception up to 1am on Sunday as we struggled to secure her release,” Mr Tumukunde said.

The police have now apologised in a press release. The Rwizi police region commander, Mr Ezekiel Emitu Ebapu, accused his officers of conflict of interest and apologised for the manner in which the bride was handled.

“That incident was very unfortunate. They should have waited for her to finish her function and then arrest her,” Mr Emitu said.

The release added: “The arrest was disgraceful in front of the groom, family, friends, guests and in-laws.

“It turned out that what was supposed to be the happiest day of her life ended in a nightmare.”

Police spokesperson Enanga Fred added the officers’ behaviour in this case was “reprehensible and based on poor judgment”.

“They caused a public nuisance act when they barged into a wedding function, arrested the bride on a sanctioned file of theft of 8 million and dropped her at the Police Station in Mbarara and detained her.” Fred Enanga said.

“It happened on August, 20 at around 8 p.m. during Christine Natuhwera’s wedding reception at Kakiika Technical Institute in Mbarara.”

Police later released an update on the officers involved in the arrest. The police statement said one of the officers involved in the arrest is now in jail while three others are on the run.

Sergeant Richard Ngabirano, an investigating officer has been arrested, whereas three of his juniors including Caroline Adio, Atugonza Muganyizi and Moris Ayesiga are still on the run.

Drunk prostitute bites off tourist’s ear before swallowing it in front of him

A tourist had parts of his right earlobe bitten off and swallowed in front of him by a drunk Thai prostitute.

Kannika Kamton, 25, is said to have approached the 55-year-old tourist after hopping onto an open-back bus in Thailand while “severely intoxicated from alcohol”.

She boarded the vehicle after it stopped at a traffic light in Pattaya before launching her attack on the tourist who was in the car.

The s*x worker allegedly sunk her teeth into the man’s right ear lobe as passengers watched on in horror on Saturday night, August 20.

As the victim screamed in agony, Kamton swallowed the chunk of flesh. Kamton tried to run off before police were called, but she was seized by cops after being handcuffed to a truck.

She was then taken to the local police station to sober up. Officers bandaged up the holidaymaker’s ear while he was “bleeding heavily” on the side of a busy road, before he was taken to a hospital for emergency treatment.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Saijai Kamchula said: “An officer took control of the attacker, but she kicked the officer with her feet and resisted arrest, so extra help was needed to restrain her.

“The detained woman will be prosecuted. There were many witnesses and the victim wants to have the woman detained and prosecuted.” Kamton’s motive for the alleged attack currently remains unclear.
