We can’t stoop so low to spy on one individual, DHQ slams reports it is monitoring Sunday Igboho

The defence headquarters (DHQ) has refuted allegations that it sent its operatives to spy on Sunday Adeyemo, a Yoruba youth leader better known as Sunday Igboho.

On Friday, a viral video had shown two alleged spies fleeing on a motorcycle while being chased by Igboho’s supporters.

The alleged spies were accused of carrying out a “survey” of Igboho’s residence in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.

However, in a statement on Saturday, March 20, Bernard Onyeuko, DHQ spokesperson said the military’s attention has been drawn to the video.

Onyeuko said: “For the records, it should be noted that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, are highly professional in the discharge of their duties, with well-defined roles, responsibilities and duties in its mandate of securing the territorial integrity of the Nigerian Nation.

“As such, the Military cannot stoop so low to such extent to ‘spy’ on one individual, as wildly and loosely alleged.

Secondly, the Armed Forces of Nigeria is a highly disciplined and professional organization with extant laws and regulations which guide the actions of its personnel in the conduct of their duties. As such, it is practically impossible for military personnel on official duty to conduct themselves in such a manner as alleged by Adeyemo and his cohorts.

“For the avoidance of doubt, preliminary investigation has so far revealed that one of the alleged ‘soldiers’ is a serial impersonator. Meanwhile, credible eyewitnesses and sources have also revealed that some associates of Igboho went in pursuit of some individuals when the motorbike conveying the impersonator and one Nigerian Air Force personnel ran into them.

The duo were immediately apprehended and taken to the said ‘IGBOHO House’ at Soka before Ibadan toll gate where they were branded as spies. Furthermore, investigations are currently underway by Nigerian Airforce and the Nigerian Army to unravel the actual circumstances which played out on the day.”

The DHQ warned individuals and groups to desist from disparaging the reputation of the Nigerian military.

EFCC explains why it wants finance director in ONSA to forfeit properties

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has disclosed the rationale behind its decision to get an interim forfeiture order, to seize eight landed properties allegedly belonging to the Director, Finance and Accounts in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), General Jafaru Mohammed.

The Commission said its resolution was triggered by a tipoff that a serving top military officer had acquired high-profile properties, and floated companies that owned similar assets.

Explaining in a document, filed before the Federal High Court, Abuja, the EFCC said upon preliminary findings by a special task force constituted in its Kano office to investigate the information, the team discovered that Gen. Mohammed, who joined the Nigerian Army in October 1993, could not have legitimately earned enough to acquire the properties allegedly linked to him.

On March 9, 2021, Justice Folashade Giwa-Ogunbanjo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, granted an ex-parte application brought by the EFCC for an interim order of forfeiture over the identified property.

In her ruling, Justice Giwa-Ogunbanjo, said: “an order of interim forfeiture is made forfeiting to the Federal Government of Nigeria all the assets and properties listed in the schedule to this motion.”

The judge also ordered the EFCC to publicise the order of interim forfeiture to invite “any person(s) or body(ies) who may have interest in the assets and properties listed in the schedule to show cause within 14 days of such publication why a final order of forfeiture to the Federal Government of Nigeria should not be made.”

The affected properties include a house on plot no 7, Gods own Estate, Road, 1, Wamba District, Abuja; a fenced plot at No 1, Jubril Aminu Crescent, Katampe Extension Abuja, and a plot of land along Kubwa Express Road, directly opposite Abuja Model City Gate, Abuja.

Others are a house (Block SD 22 House 2, Road 5, Kabusa Garden Estate, Abuja; House No 15, 21 Crescent, 2% Avenue Gwarimpa Estate, Abuja; House No 3, Liverpool Close, Sun City Estate, Abuja; House No 532, Mainstreet, Sun City Estate Abuja, and House No 25, Osaka Street, Sun City Estate Abuja.

Meanwhile, in the document submitted to the court, the EFCC stated that. Gen Mohammed has earned not more than N73,402,644.29 since he was enlisted into the Nigerian Army in 1993, and could not have been able to legitimately acquire the properties.

The document read: “Upon receipt of the intelligence, investigation commenced in earnest whereby letters of investigation activities were written to Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS), Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Jaiz Bank Plc, GT Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Pic, Keystone Bank Plc and Unity Bank Plc, amongst others requesting for account opening packages and statement of accounts as well as the registration status of the companies listed.

“A team of operatives visited the properties to verify the existence as well as the location of the properties. The team interviewed General Jafaru Mohammed and recorded his statement regarding his source of wealth.

General Jafaru Mohammed is serving military personnel and currently the Director of Finance and Accounts in the Office of the National Security Adviser. Before his current posting, he served in the Finance and Accounts Departments of the Nigerian Defence Academy and National Defence College.

“The said Jafaru Mohammed admitted having and running many filing stations while being a public servant. Clearly, in view of the properties so far discovered, there is no way the legitimate earnings of Brigadier General Jafaru Mohammed could have funded the purchase of these properties.

“Brigadier General Jafaru owns two bureaus de change (BDC) companies, namely Ummatuhabibullah BDC Ltd and Tahir BB BDC with his wives and children as shareholders and signatories to the accounts of the companies.”

Use of drugs more prevalent in South-West –NDLEA boss, Marwa

The Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig.-Gen Buba Marwa (retired), has disclosed that about 14.4 per cent of Nigerians between the ages of 16 and 64 are using drugs.

He said this was three times the global average, noting that zonally, the South-West part of the country had the worst prevalence in the use of illicit substances.

Marwa who spoke on Friday, during the inauguration of the Behavioural Action Care Foundation Centre in Ogbomoso, built by the Ogbomoso First Group, said there was no community in Nigeria that had not suffered from the debilitating disease of drug use, drug abuse, and addiction.

He said: “The prevalence in the South-West geo-political zone is 22.4 per cent. Oyo State in particular is 23 per cent. This is followed by the South-South with the prevalence of 16.6 per cent and the South-East 14.8 per cent.

This is followed by the North-East with 18.6 per cent, North-West 12 per cent and North-Central 10 per cent. Kano has a prevalence of 16 per cent. This rate is very high considering its population.”

Marwa called on parents and other stakeholders to demand a drug-free certificate as a requisite for marriage as well as other important programmes and commended the Ogbomoso group and traditional rulers for their support.

Meanwhile, he said the agency would continue to crack down on all sources of illicit substances in Nigeria, and asked for more collaboration in the fight against its use, noting that the war against it must be a collective effort.

How I gave birth and no one knew about it – Nkechi Blessing opens up.

Nollywood actress, Nkechi Blessing, has disclosed why she kept her marriage and childbirth off social media.

In an exclusive interview with The Punch, Nkechi about her greatest fear, marriage and son.

“My marriage is the part of my life I wanted to be quiet about. I know that I have always been loud about all my relationships but I also like and deserve privacy too. I only show people what I want them to see. It is my marriage and everyone should not know who I am married to. My husband does not like social media. Before some people bombard him with messages on social media, looking for what is not lost.

He does not even comment on my Instagram posts. I know I am a loud person but even spiritually, it is advisable not to always have too much buzz around everything one does. I gave birth and no one knew until they saw my child. Everything is possible as long as one has people who are not selling one out. It is one’s friends that often sell one out, and once one cuts that down, one’s secret would be safe.

“My husband knows what I can do and he is not bothered about gossips he reads online. He is what people call the ‘ginger partner’.

He knows the truth about me and that is why I can be unapologetic of my actions. I think it is important for one to marry an understanding partner.”
The bubbly actress also stated that her greatest fear was losing her mother. She said, “Of course, I have fears and down moments. My greatest fear is losing my mum. I don’t ever want to lose her. In fact, if it is possible to keep her for life, I will do that. I also do not have any insecurity. I am always confident in myself. I don’t entertain any insecurity.

The only time things get to me is when false claims are peddled about me. Most of the things that go viral about me are not true. But, I always resist the urge to give a detailed explanation to defend myself. I also wonder why rumour mongers do not allow me to be. Why would people twist a story to entertain their audience. But, this is the life I signed up for and I had already prepared my mind for it. I have also learnt from some of the people I am close friends with. I know and see what they have also been through at the hands of bullies and trolls.”

NIDCOM secures retrial for Nigerian wrongfully jailed in Cote d’Ivoire

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has revealed that the retrial of a Nigerian, Itunu Babalola, said to have been wrongfully incarcerated in Cote D’lvoire, is to commence under a new, unbiased prosecutor.

This was contained in a statement signed by Mr Gabriel Odu, the commission’s Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit officer, in Abuja, on Friday, March 19.

According to him, following painstaking investigations by the commission and the Nigeria Mission in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, it had now been confirmed that Babalola, a Nigerian living in Abidjan, was wrongfully charged and incarcerated for a crime she did not commit.

Also, the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa said the Charge D’Affaires of the Nigerian Mission in Côte D’Ivoire, Mr Mohammed Gana, had sent officials of the mission to Bondoukou, a city eight hours away from Abidjan when the case was first brought to his attention.

Gana was quoted as saying that plans were underway to engage the services of a lawyer, to prove the innocence of Babalola at the Court of Appeal.

Ripples Nigeria gathered that the accused had spent two out of the 10-year jail term passed on her, for an offense she did not commit.

“Reports indicate that the new prosecutor, assigned to the case, has given assurances of a fair and unbiased review and retrial of the case, to secure the release of Babalola.

“The reports also indicate that the former prosecutor, in collaboration with the police, allegedly twisted the case and accused Babalola of human trafficking hence her conviction for 20 years, although the sentence was reduced to 10 years from which she has served 2 years so far.

“Babalola, whose family is from Oyo State, Nigeria, has been living in Bondoukou, Cote d’Ivoire, for a long time but got entangled in a legal battle, when she reported the burglary of her house to the police.

On efforts made to secure her bail, the prosecutor said it is only the court that can grant her bail, as she has already been convicted, we will continue to monitor the case as it unfolds,” he said.
