Plateau varsity student falls off vehicle, dies during protest

A 100-level student of the Plateau State University, Bokkos, identified as Israel Emmanuel, has died after he fell off a vehicle during a protest by the students over the incessant attacks on the institution by bandits suspected to be herdsmen.

The students embarked on protest on Wednesday after four female students were reportedly abducted and raped by the bandits before they were dumped in a bush on Saturday.

Emmanuel, who was the Mathematics Department class representative at the university, fell off a vehicle and later died from the injuries he sustained in the incident.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Yohana Izam, who confirmed the incident to journalists on Wednesday, described the student’s death as an unfortunate incident that has thrown the university into mourning.

He said: “To us as an institution, Emmanuel’s death is shocking and a great loss to us considering the cause of his death.

We have been cautioning the students against demonstration and protests, which are not jamborees, yet they keep doing it.

“Our pain and regret is that the protest has robbed us of a precious soul and forced us into mourning.”

Speaking on the incident, the institution’s Student Union Government (SUG) President, Luepai Ezekiel, expressed sadness over the death of Emmanuel whom he described as strong member of the SUG.

“Emmanuel fell off from one of the vehicles during our protest against the insecurity in the institution and landed with his head on the tarred road.

We rushed him to the Bokkos Cottage Hospital but unfortunately, he couldn’t make it as he later died,” the SUG president said.

Confusion as mother disappears with her daughter’s bride price

Drama recently erupted at an introductory rite in Garsen community after the bride’s mother made away with the bride price paid by her in-laws.

The bride’s mother, Anne Maweni, reportedly feared her kinsmen would short-change her and left the ceremony with the dowry amounting to Sh170,000 (N650,000).

The ceremony was underway in Tana River County, Kenya, when family members noticed Maweni, the bride’s mother, was no longer present.

“During the ceremony, she is the one who served the guests and elders food but did not join them on the table. Nobody knew what time she left,” said Maweni’s sister Veronica Meilu.

Efforts to reach her on phone were futile as she had switched it off.

Maweni later texted her sister with another number asking her to oversee the remainder of the ceremony.

It was then that the elders and in-laws who had gathered for the ceremony realized that something was amiss.

“I was not aware of my sister’s plans, but here I was being put to task, to explain how we stole the dowry and where my sister was,” said Meilu.

As the leaders were contemplating reporting the “heist” to the police, Maweni called to explain why she took off.

“She asked me to put the phone on loudspeaker before revealing that the dowry ‘theft’ was a plan she had hatched with the son-in-law before the ceremony,” Ms Meilu said.

Maweni said that they switched the bag containing money with one that had wrappers.

“Yes, we counted the money together but we exchanged the bag containing money with that holding wrappers because the elders are not deserving of any gains from my daughter,” Anne Maweni said on phone.

It also emerged that it was the son-in-law who left the ceremony with the bride price.

Maweni defended her actions, recalling how her kinsmen abandoned her when her husband died, leaving her with two children, a five-year-old girl, and a two-year-old boy.

“After the demise of my husband, you sent me away with nothing but my daughter. You took my son away, and he later died in your hands. Then, you said that the community had no use for a girl child,” she told the elders on phone.

I have left you with female wrappers to wear since you did not stand for a widow, at her time of need,” she said.

Ms Maweni, however, promised to send part of the dowry money to only one elder for his support during her tribulations and also standing in for her daughter’s marriage ceremony.

“Mzee Bajila, you are like a father to me and witnessed the atrocities against me. You fought for me in vain. So only you, deserve a portion of this money,” she said and hung up.

Unfortunately, the mother ran away after receiving the N3m meant for her daughter’s brain surgery, leaving the poor girl to the cold hands of death.

Read the write-up;

Last month we had a case of a 3yr old girl with a brain tumor who needed N3m for surgery. A donor insisted on paying the money to the account of the mother, stating that he’s not comfortable with NGOs.

We initially wanted him to pay directly to the hospital, but that was not possible because 80% of the medical materials needed for the surgery has to be bought outside the hospital.

Eventually, the donor credited the mother’s account, and the mother absconded with the N3m. Sadly, the child died this morning. Rest In Peace Ada”.

He said, “As from Thursday, April 15, 2021, candidates will no longer be required to provide any email address during registration.

“Consequently, candidates will have the following options to access their profile during or after registration.

“i. Mobile APP on the candidates’ phone

Printing of examination slip (Notification) or Result notification slip or ticketing can be done anywhere using the candidates JAMB registration number only.

“At the conclusion of the 2021 UTME/DE registration exercise, candidates will provide their email addresses only after the 2021 UTME/DE registration exercise has been declared closed by JAMB through (a) Mobile APP on his/her registered phone

(b) Sending the word email (space then the email address) on his /her registered phone to 55019.

The email is typed twice for correctness (Email addresses will be entered twice for validation and prevention of typographical errors.”

The JAMB boss said an individual’s mobile phone now remains the only major tool to carry out all the registration processes.

Oloyede also disclosed that the organization has phased out the use of cash for any transactions in the Computer-Based Test centres owned by JAMB but Automated Teller Machine cards.

He said the move was to frustrate the antics of touts who hang around JAMB CBT centres as well as prevent illegal charges.

Groom runs away a day before his wedding

An Ugandan man, Dr Patrick Mbusa Kabagambe, has made local news headlines after he reportedly ran away on his wedding eve.

He was said to have gone to his friend’s house to rest because he was stressed.

According to Daily Monitor, Patrick and Christabella Banturaki were to set to tie the knot at All Saints Cathedral Nakasero in Kampala City last Saturday, April 10. The reception had been organised at Silver Springs Hotel in Kampala.

However, on the eve of the historic day, Dr Kabagambe disappeared and his mobile phone was switched off. This triggered panic, frantic calls, anxiety and confusion among his friends, family and in-laws.

His worried bride-to-be in company of her uncle went to Kasangati Police Station, Wakiso District, where they opened a case of a missing person.

Detectives, relatives and friends began a frantic search for the would-be groom. Worried relatives flooded social media with messages announcing the sudden disappearance of Dr Kabagambe, imploring well-wishers to share information wherever he is spotted, dead or alive.

Dr Patrick Mbusa Kabagambe has been reported missing with his car UBH 905X on the eve of his wedding this Saturday, 10 April 21, and all his known [telephone] contacts are switched off. The case has been reported at Kasangati Police Station, SD REF 22/10/04/2021. Patriots, let’s assist trace the suspect/victim,” a relative posted in a WhatsApp group last Saturday.

On the wedding day, Dr. Patrick still didn’t show up, converting what should have been a blissful ceremony into an agonising blind search.

The bride, who had been informed hours earlier that her groom has yet to appear did not head to All Saints Nakasero Cathedral.

However, some relatives, unaware of the developments, appeared at the church for the scheduled wedding, only to find neither the bride nor the groom was present.

The search continued the following day, Sunday, April 11. But before the police could engage other tracking units to establish his last contacts, Dr Kabagambe presented himself at Wandegeya Police Station in Kampala.

The deputy spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire, who confirmed the incident on Monday, Aprl 12, said Dr Kabagambe told detectives that he was not a missing person as reported to the Force, but elected to spend a night at the home of an undisclosed friend.

He said he was stressed. He didn’t have a reason why he didn’t want to marry Ms Banturaki. We later released him on police bond as investigations continue,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.

However, there is no clear penal offence that the police can prefer against him given the fact that he claimed that he married Ms Banturaki in customary ceremony and even paid bride price. In Uganda, the law recognises customary marriage.

Mr Owoyesigyire said they are waiting for Ms Banturaki to record a statement with detectives to determine the next course of the case.

A close relative of Dr Kabagambe, who spoke to Daily Monitor, said the runaway groom is “traumatised” while the entire family is distressed over the flopped wedding.
