British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation on Thursday as Conservative Party leader after just six weeks in power and said her successor would be elected by the end of next week.
“I recognise that given the situation I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.
I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party,” Truss said.
A leadership election for MPs to select her successor will be “completed within the next week,” she added.
She took office only six weeks ago after Boris Johnson’s resignation.
Of late, Truss battled to stabilise her position after an economic crash forced her into humiliating U-turns on tax reforms.
