Tension as Plateau gunmen kidnap ailing community leader

There was tension on Wednesday across Daika community, Panyam district, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, following the kidnap of a community leader, Mr Gashon Leks.Gason is the elder brother of a former military officer in the locality, Air Vice Marshal Leks (rtd).

Some residents, who spoke to PUNCH Metro, said the incident had been reported to security agents.

One of them, Mathew Chai, said the retired military officer’s brother was at his compound when the kidnappers stormed the village around 10pm on Monday and took him away while scaring residents with gunshots.

Chai said,

“We have not seen the man since he was taken away by the gunmen. The man is into farming and other businesses.

“Since that Monday, nobody knows the whereabouts of the kidnapped victim.

It was this morning (Wednesday) that the kidnappers allowed him to speak with the family members and I learnt that they have yet to demand any ransom.

“There has been disquiet in the community because the man has some health challenges before his kidnap and the villagers are really worried over his whereabouts.”

The spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, denied knowledge of the incident.

He said,

“The matter has not been reported to my office. But I will call the DPO in the area to find out the situation of things regarding the incident and get back to you.”

He had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

Buhari orders security agents to fish out perpetrators of Plateau attacks

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday ordered security agencies to fish perpetrators of last weekend’s attacks in Plateau State.

Gunmen suspected to be bandits killed an unspecified number of people during attacks on communities in Kanam and Wase local government areas of Plateau State.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President assured Nigerians that the perpetrators of the crime would not escape justice.

He charged the security agencies to work with the state government to bring the situation under control and take steps to bring the culprits to justice quickly.

Buhari said: “I urge all our citizens, the people of Plateau State in particular, to expose the perpetrators of such incidents, their sponsors and those who encourage such criminals who carry out these dastardly acts of murder so that the law will take its course. They must not be forgiven.”

Gov Mohammed condemns Plateau attack, orders security agents to fish out perpetrators

The Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, on Monday condemned the killing of travellers by gunmen in Plateau State.

Gunmen had in the early hours of Saturday killed 25 people during an attack on a travelling party along Rukuba Road, Jos North local government area of Plateau State.

The victims were returning from the annual ZIKR (Prayer Session) held in Bauchi to mark the commencement of the Islamic new year when the hoodlums struck.

The governor, who reacted to the incident through a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Muhktar Gidado, ordered security agents to fish out the perpetrators of the attack.

The statement read: “Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has condemned in strong terms, the attack by Irigwe militia in Jos, Plateau State, last Saturday, August 14, 2021, on innocent travellers who were returning home after attending the annual ZIKR (Prayer Session) in Bauchi, to mark the commencement of the New Islamic year.

The governor described the attack which claimed the lives of 25 persons, as very sad and unfortunate, cognizant of the fact that they were innocent citizens travelling peacefully.

“Governor Bala Mohammed called for calm among residents and advised the people not to take laws into their hands.

“Commending the proactive measures taken by the authorities in Plateau State to forestall further breach of law and order, he called on the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of this despicable act and bring them to justice

While commiserating with the families of all those who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident, he also condoled with the famous Islamic Scholar, Sheik Dahiru Usman Bauchi, for the loss of 25 members of his Tijjaniyah sect and prayed that the Almighty Allah will give their families and other Nigerians the fortitude to bear this great loss.”
