Nigeria urges newly-inducted doctors to shun strike in resolving grievances

The Federal Government has advised newly-inducted medical doctors not to partake in strike in the country’s health sector.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, according to a statement issued by the Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry, Charles Akpan, made the call during the induction of six graduates of the University of Abuja into the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) held on Sunday.

The minister’s son, Dr. Andrew Ngige, was among the new inductees.

Ngige urged the medical graduates to be of good behaviour and uphold the highest ethical standards in the discharge of their duties.

He said: “I am a medical doctor. One of you being inducted here is my second son. My first son is also a medical doctor. My daughter is also a medical doctor. By virtue of ethics, our oath as doctors is to save lives. That is our primary duty.

“If doctors go on strike, people die. That is the truth. Human life is irreplaceable. How do you bring back people who have died as a result of doctors not being at their duty posts?

“It is unethical for doctors to embark on strike. I have said it so many times in the past and I will continue to say it. Doctors should not go on strike. Therefore, you should desist from going on strike in the interest of humanity and our noble profession.”

Nigeria not at dead-end, will overcome challenges – Dogara

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, on Sunday expressed optimism that Nigeria would soon overcome its security challenges.

Dogara, who stated this in his keynote address at the House of Justice Annual Summit held in Kaduna, urged Nigerians not to rest on their oars until the country over the challenges.

He said: “These security challenges, as deeply disconcerting as they are, they are not strange. There is no nation on earth that has not been tried or tested. Every one of them has come to moments of national peril. We can put an end to the moral vandalism that flows from all spots of bedlam across the face of the nation.

“No season lasts forever, therefore this cup shall pass if we all do our bit such as we are doing at this summit in order to keep the promise of this great country alive.

For us to leave this Nigeria, our country that we cherish and hold dear, for others to defend is not cowardice, it is apostasy to the Nigerian creed. For those who think Nigeria has arrived at a dead-end, let us disappoint them by turning the end into a bend. We can do it!

“I need neither remind us that national security is a subject matter on the lips of all Nigerians now. I am further comforted by the recognition by House of Justice, in their thesis, that this insecurity challenge is surmountable, its enormity notwithstanding.”

The ex-speaker said the post-civil war situation in Nigeria had been largely calm except for limited instances of armed robbery.

Dogara added: “For about two decades the security situation has become unhinged. Killing, maiming, and the destruction of property have become commonplace daily occurrences.

These manifest in the form of the Boko Haram insurgency, kidnapping , militancy in the Niger Delta, the activities of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) secessionists in the South-East, banditry, farmer/herders clashes, cattle rustling and ethnoreligious conflicts among others. These, each sufficiently vicious in its own right, have combined to compound the quagmire of insecurity that pervades Nigeria now.”

The type of leader Nigeria needs in 2023 – Tambuwal

The Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, on Monday urged Nigerians to vote for politicians with genuine interest of the people in the 2023 general elections.

Tambuwal, who made the call in his keynote address at the 4th Annual Criminal Law Review Conference of the Rule of Law Development Foundation, encouraged Nigerians to work with the governments at all levels to tackle insecurity and poor economy in the country.

The governor stressed that Nigerians should avoid a “parochial and provincial politician,” and go for an incorruptible leader who understands that the best way to fight corruption is by personal examples.

He blamed the heightened insecurity in the country on poor leadership.

Tambuwal said: “Nigeria needs a leader that is versatile, one that has friends and associates across the length and breadth of this country and a leader with a broad world view and not a parochial and provincial politician.

“We need an incorruptible leader who understands that the best way to fight corruption is by personal examples and also by the building of strong institutions that can withstand shocks and manipulations.

Nigeria needs a leader in tune with the times, who is reasonably aware of the modern demands of technology in solving societal problems.

“Yes, Nigeria needs a bridge builder. A compassionate leader, sensitive to the needs and aspirations of the poor and needy; a leader whose words count and can be counted on, indeed, a leader with courage, an accountable leader who can be trusted to face the challenges of nationhood squarely without sentiments or pandering to interests that are inconsistent with national goals.

“For leadership that galvanises, mobilises, and directs Nigerians on the path to sustainable peace, progress, and development, such a leader will not regard any part of the country as conquered people.

“We must find and support such a leader in 2023 so that Nigeria can begin the long walk back to peace, security, and prosperity for all her citizens.”

ASUU responsible for destruction of education in Nigeria – Adamu Garba

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adamu Garba, has accused the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), of destroying Nigeria’s education system.

Garba described the academic body as the single most destructive system of education in Nigeria.

The single most destructive system of Education in Nigeria is ASUU. Always Striking for money, not for innovative learning.

“I don’t know why such kind of Union still exist when we are not a communist state,” he wrote.

His comment comes after ASUU threatened another strike if the Federal Government failed to fulfil agreements reached in December 2020.

The body had given the Federal Government three weeks warning or risk another nationwide industrial action.

If you die for Nigeria, you die for nothing – Samklef

Nigerian record producer, Samklef has said that anyone who dies for Nigeria would have done so for nothing.

The Molowo Noni crooner stated this in a Twitter post while pointing out the deceit and manipulative tactics politicians employ to seize and hold onto power.

Samklef, born Samuel Oguachuba also noted that religion and poverty is the weapon political office holders use on the people because they don’t want the country to work.

He tweeted; ”If you die for Nigeria, you die for nothing”

”Religion and poverty is their weapon. The men of God and politicians don’t want Nigeria 2 work. If u know u know.”

Nigeria will fulfill its climate change commitments –Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said on Friday the Federal Government would fulfill its climate change commitments in the interest of Nigerians.

Osinbajo, according to a statement issued by its Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, made the pledge when he received the World Bank delegation at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The delegation was led by its Managing Director of Development Policy and Partnerships, Dr. Mari Pangestu, and its Country Director in Nigeria, Shubham Chaudhuri.

The Vice President also interacted with officials of the International Monetary Fund on the IMF Article IV bilateral consultations.

Osinbajo has been pushing for a just transition to global net-zero emissions.

He had particularly called on multilateral agencies, and Western countries to stop the planned defunding of fossil fuels/gas projects in developing countries as part of the energy transition plan towards the global net-zero target by 2050.

At both meetings with the World Bank managing director and IMF officials, Osinbajo said Nigeria remained committed to a reduction in global greenhouse emissions.

He said: “I think it is very important, at least this is what we are trying to do, to keep our sights on what would work for the majority of our people.

“The truth, of course, is that we have fossil fuel resources, we have all of that, but we have energy issues, distribution, and quality of access to energy, as well as clean energy.

“So, those are the issues, access to energy and education, then renewable energy, and how to be able to move quickly enough in terms of putting renewable energy in place.”

Nigeria heading for final implosion, extinction —Dogara

Former Speaker of the House of Reps, Yakubu Dogara has declared that it was obvious that unless Nigerians rise at different levels of leadership to halt the present trajectory, Nigeria will no doubt head for final implosion and eventual extinction.

Yakubu Dogara who delivered a keynote address with the theme: ‘Peace And Development In Nigeria: The Pragmatic Approach’, at a two-day Peace And Development Submit organized by Sultan Maccido Institute For Peace And Development Studies Of The University Of Abuja recently, said that, “As is it, we don’t have to do anything for this to happen. All we need is not to do anything at all” .

The former Speaker who is presently representing Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency at the House of Reps added that, “Our hope must be rooted in the story of China, Rwanda, UAE, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, etc, which all prove the point that we can turn our ashes into glory and that nothing is impossible. If we don’t give in or give up, something must give in” .

He stressed that, “The stories of those countries are a validation of the saying that every problem comes with its own solution, but it takes only those looking for the solution to find it” .

According to him, “No doubt, it will take leadership for us to replicate those stories and I am happy that so many of us here are stepping up to provide that leadership. The hosting of this submit is a positive indicator that we are prepared, in line with our civic duties, to be up in arms against problems stultifying our development and advancement as a nation”.

Yakubu Dogara stressed that, “It will take the kind of leadership that recognizes that compassion is not tossing a coin at a beggar, it is pulling down the system that produces beggars; leadership that knows that the real problem is what we demand and what we do not demand; Leadership that believes history does not just happen to us, we make history happen; Leadership that knows that not everything that is faced can be changed but nothing can be changed until it is faced”.

He further said that, “I had warned before that in tackling unbridled violence, we must realize that guns do not kill and killing the violent does not necessarily bring peace except the peace of the graveyard.

“We kill with our minds and peace settles first in the mind before it is expressed. So the battle to build a peaceful Nigeria must be a battle for the minds of our people”, he declared.

Yakubu Dogara then advised that, “We must start doing something and speaking up. They may not listen to us but just because they won’t listen to us is no enough reason to quit. We cannot continue to remain mum and aloof and hope that somehow, someday, these radical events and voices will miraculously quieten and not grow louder. Our silence is no longer golden”.

He emphasized that, “Every generation in history have had its moment to fight. This is our own moment. This is our Pharaoh and our Red Sea. The odds are stacked against us but we are born and raised for such a time as this. It is our time. Let us stop crying and go to work. We may lose some privileges but we will win history: for fortune itself favours only the brave”.

According to him, “Today, Nigeria is faced with unprecedented crisis so much so that nothing in our history prepares us for such a time as this. We seem to have accepted killings and mass murder as our new normal and so many cold blooded murder of our brothers and sisters do no longer make the headlines in the media.

“As students, lecturers and political leaders, some of us are complicit while the few who have dared to speak up are already outrage – fatigued and have surrendered to fatalism- a feeling that nothing matters anymore. It is like Nigeria seems to be suffering from some kind of God ordained ineluctable fate”, he retorted.

He enthused that, “What we have done before doesn’t matter, all that matters is our present station. As long as we are not actively engaged in seeking for solutions to these intractable issues we are actually, wittingly or unwittingly, actively promoting it”.

Nigeria’s religious leaders worse than politicians – Aisha Yesufu

A co-convener of the BringBackourGirls movement, Aisha Yesufu, on Tuesday blamed religious leaders over some of the ills in society.

She said religious leaders are worse than politicians in Nigeria.

Yesufu, who stated these on her Twitter handle, was responding to a post by the General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, William Kumuyi, who warned Christians not to despise those in government for failing to deliver on pre-election promises.

He wrote: “We teach that if you’re a genuine believer in [Jesus] Christ, you wouldn’t hate your neighbour.

“Nor would you disdain those in power because they appear not to be delivering on electoral pledges such that you would go on the rampage, destroying government property or pillaging the public till.”

In her reaction, the activists said the country’s religious leaders benefit from bad governance as it helps them to “sell cheap miracles and power points.”

Yesufu wrote: “Religious rulers in Nigeria are worse than political rulers.

“They keep the people enslaved. They also need bad governance to sell cheap miracles and power points!

Until you free people from the clutches of their mallams, pastors, dibias, babalawos & boka, nothing will change.”

Nigeria’s future bright despite challenges – Osinbajo

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Saturday expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome its numerous challenges.

Osinbajo, who stated this at the annual thanksgiving service of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) in Jos, Plateau State, challenged Nigerians to speak positively about the country despite the present challenges.

The Vice President noted that the country has a bright future.

Osinbajo said: “Every believer is an anointed priest of God. So, unlike any other gathering, those of us who are here are led not by the flesh but by the spirit of God. We rely on the inherent, infallible, word of God — not speculations or rumours.

“Indeed, for us, the foundation of truth for us is the word of God. This is why I’m completely convinced that the future of our nation is very bright, very bright indeed. Things are going the way God operates. Our God is a God of complex situations. He steps in when things get complicated. He’s not a man whose options are limited. He has no limits, no boundaries.

The church must not fear. We are the called-out ones of God. We are indestructible. The force that will destroy the church does not exist and cannot exist, because the creator of the heavens and the earth is the head of the church and He is the one who has reminded us that He will build His church and indeed, the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

“He will give us the keys of the kingdom and whatever it is we bind on earth will be bound in heaven. We are confident that all is well with us. So, we bind all forces of evil, division, injustice. Everything that has caused us sadness, sorrow, we bind them today, and we declare in the word of God that has been spoken to us that the siege is over in this land. The church of God is coming to a new season of glory and victory.”

Why Nigeria has not declared bandits as terrorists – Defence minister

The Minister of Defence, Major-Gen. Bashir Magashi (rtf) on Friday, explained why the Federal Government has not declared bandits wreaking havoc in the North-West part of the country as terrorists.

The National Assembly and other prominent Nigerians including the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, had a few weeks ago urged the federal government to declare the bandits as terrorists.

Magashi, who made the clarification in a chat with journalists in Maiduguri, Borno State, said the need to follow the right procedure was responsible for the federal government’s delay in declaring the bandits as terrorists.

He stressed that the bandits would be classified as terrorists once the procedure had been completed.

The minister said: “We are not declaring them terrorists because there is a procedure for doing that.

“When the procedure is followed, they will be classified as terrorists. We are waiting for the procedure to be completed.”

Osinbajo laments high cost of governance in Nigeria

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday reiterated the need to prune the cost of governance in order to entrench accountability at all levels.

Osinbajo made this call on Thursday, during the inauguration of the Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement in Abuja.

The Vice President was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba at the event.

The World Bank-sponsored SPESSE project aims to develop human capacity in procurement management in the public and private sectors and produce competent and intellectually sound procurement professionals.

Speaking on the ways to achieve the programme’s mandates, Osinbajo said, “Nigeria must make progress in reducing the high cost of governance in the public sector as well as be strengthened by entrenching transparency and accountability at all levels of government, while issues relating to construction, rehabilitation and extension of existing buildings, acquisition of lands, purchase of laboratory equipment, disposal of reagents and samples amongst others must conform with world standards.”

Speaking on the Procurement Act of 2017, the Vice President expressed the satisfaction of the government in the existing law, saying if there is the need for amendment, a proposal would be made to the National Assembly on it.

FIRS advocates single revenue agency for Nigeria

The Federal Inland Revenue (FIRS) on Thursday urged the Federal Government to adopt a single revenue authority for the country to boost its revenue.

The Executive Chairman of FIRS, Muhammad Nami, made the call at an event hosted by the agency in conjunction with Pedabo Professional Services in Lagos.

He said: “The government should look into a way for consolidating or aggregating its accounting mechanism so that all taxes paid by all that have been levied by way of charges are accounted for by a single revenue authority in the country.”

According to him, the adoption of a single revenue authority will help ensure that taxes collected in the country are remitted in good time for the government to have money to fund its budgetary estimates, provide social amenities for the citizens.

Nami added: “It is not as if taxes are not being paid but because of the leakages in the system that we are trying to block, in the part of recognising those taxes.

“When you come into a country like ours, when you pay something to our airport authorities, are you going to say that no taxes have been paid?

“One thing there is for somebody to assess that maybe taxes are being paid, which is in line with the mandate of the FIRS, which is assessment, collection, and accounting for taxes.

“So if payments of taxes are done and collections are done by different agencies of the government, accounting for those incomes becomes a big challenge.”

Seme border closure a disservice to Nigerians – Gani Adams

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, said on Wednesday the continued closure of the Seme border was a disservice to Nigerians living in the South-West part of the country.

Adams, who stated this at the 2021 edition of the Olokun Festival held at Suntan Beach Badagry, decried the loss of huge revenue accrued to the government due to the border closure.

He said the reason given by the Federal Government for closing the border was not true.

The government had in August 2019 claimed that the Nigerian land borders were closed in a bid to check smuggling and proliferation of dangerous weapons in the country.

Adams, therefore, called on the Federal Government to reopen the border.

He said: “The issue of the border closure is a thing of worry. Seme border was shut in August 2019 to curb the smuggling of goods and weapons. However, it is sad that the border still remained closed. Closing the border for close to three years in a nation like Nigeria is not good for our economy.

“Without war, Seme border closure is a disservice to the South-West. The implication of this prolonged closure on the nation’s economy is huge. Therefore, I urge the Federal Government to urgently open the Seme border considering its importance to Nigeria and Nigerians.”

Nigeria will heave sigh of relief when I succeed Buhari in 2023 – Yahaya Bello

The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, said on Monday he is ready to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s President in 2023.

The governor, who disclosed this when he featured in a programmed on Arise TV programme, said Nigerians would have a heave of relief when he takes over the country’s leadership in two years time.

He said his achievements in Kogi State are hugely appreciated at the national level.

Bello stressed that he would deploy the leadership qualities that have endeared him to the people of the state in managing the affairs of the country.

He also reaffirmed his opposition to the rotational presidency, saying the best person with the capacity to unite Nigerians should be allowed to occupy the nation’s highest political office in two year’s time.

The governor said: “Almost six years down the line, Kogi is united more than ever before. Now come to 2023, what I have been able to achieve in Kogi State is desired at national level. I’m sure you know we are living in a global village and whatever you do even in your bedroom is noticed out there.

“If Nigerians across board — youth, women, leaders and followers seeing my leadership style, uniting the people, bringing in experts, adding value to governance, prudent and sincere way and manner of utilisation of our resources and getting the results, balancing the equation which is most desired in the country today — if this multitude is yearning and calling me to come and serve this great nation in the year 2023 after President Muhammadu Buhari, I will say, yes I’m ready.

“Serving Nigeria in that greater capacity will serve the interest of the people of Kogi state, Nigerians, Africa and even black race than I remaining the executive governor of Kogi State.

“By the grace of God when I would have been sworn in as the President and Commander-in-Chief taking over from Buhari on May 29, 2023, Nigeria will have a heave of relief.”

Reps begin debate on 2022 budget, decry Nigeria’s debt profile

The House of Representatives on Wednesday decried the country’s rising debt profile as worrisome.

The lawmaker, who spoke during the commencement of debate on the general principles of the 2022 budget proposal at the plenary, noted that the sum of N3.9 trillion was allocated for debt servicing in the budget.

A member of the House, Omofiok Luke, challenged the Federal Government to reduce its dependence on loans from multilateral lenders.

He said: “Another source of concern is that the proposal before us has a deficit of N6.2 trillion and the government is proposing new borrowings to finance this deficit.

“What this implies is that then total public debt of Nigeria is expected to rise to N5 trillion in 2022 fiscal year. This is worrisome not only for today but for generations unborn and the future of Nigeria.

Let us do what we can to try to reduce the deficit and how we can reduce borrowing. There is nothing wrong with borrowing provided we borrow and put it for production, not for consumption.

“So as we begin to look at it let us take the future generations of Nigeria into consideration while we get to borrow and make sure the borrowings are being put into productive ventures.”

President Muhammadu Buhari presented the 2022 budget proposal of N16.3trillion to the joint session of the National Assembly on October 7.

Buhari tolerant, perfect for Nigeria – Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Friday, praised President Muhammadu Buhari for his tolerance and understanding in the handling of Nigeria’s affairs since he assumed office in 2015.

Mohammed, who addressed a delegation of the African Union Development Agency–NEPAP and Africa Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), who visited him in Abuja, said with the myriad of challenges rocking the country, it would only take a President with “wisdom and special style” like Buhari to rule the country.

He said: “The kind of challenges we faced in the last six years would challenge the most resourceful person. This is a country of about 200 million people, over 500 ethnic groups and tongues, and people with different aspirations, religions, and beliefs.

Running a country like Nigeria is like running a mini-continent and this is why I want to salute the tolerance, wisdom, and peculiar governance style of Mr. President.

I say this because, in the last six years, I have been attending the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meetings. The President will, on any issue, listen to the submissions of all the 43 ministers if they want to make contributions to any issue without betraying where he stands on the matter.

“Even when we know that some of our colleagues are not making so much sense on a topic, the President will listen attentively and will say thank you at the end of the contributions.

“I believe that it is his background and experience that moulded him that way and till date, you cannot see any minister that will say his view was never heard. No matter how pedestal it might be, the President will listen.
