The Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointments of five Resident Electoral Commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Those confirmed as INEC RECs by the senators during plenary are Umar Yusuf Garba from Kano State, Sa’ad Umar Idris from Bauchi, Chukwuemeka Ibeziako from Anambra State, Umar Mukhtar from Borno State, and Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem from Bayelsa State.
Plateau South Senator, Simon Lalong, who presented the report on behalf of the committee on election matters, chaired by senator representing Oyo South, Sharafadeen Alli, urged the Senate to confirm the five nominees having passed screening and satisfied necessary requirements for the positions.
The lawmakers confirmed the appointments of the five nominees after adopting the committee’s report, in accordance with section 154(1) of the 1999 constitution (as amended).
The new RECs, nominated by President Bola Tinubu in a letter to the Senate on March 18, will each serve for a five-year term.
Mr Tinubu also on Monday swore in two newly appointed INEC commissioners.
