Man beats girlfriend, kills bystander who attempted to intervene

A Georgia man, Jordan Talley, 27, from the United States of America, has been arrested for beating his girlfriend and killing a man who attempted to intervene in the altercation.

According to Fox News, Talley has been charged with manslaughter and domestic battery.

The report said the incident happened on March 31 in downtown Orlando.

Orange County deputies said a video captured Talley hitting a woman in front of a law office near the intersection of Robinson Street and Magnolia Avenue.

Talley allegedly pulled the woman by her hair and forcefully threw her to the ground

A bystander, Donald Storie, 64, was walking nearby with his wife, daughter and her fiancé when he heard the woman screaming for help.

The deceased family informed authorities that he headed in the direction of the screaming woman and, when he approached the couple, Talley punched him.

Storie died on April 23 after being taken off life support.

More surveillance video shows Talley and his girlfriend entering a car, which detectives were able to trace back to Talley’s home in Georgia.

He was taken into custody by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

Talley admitted to detectives that he punched Storie, claiming he was concerned for his girlfriend’s safety

Anthony Joshua to fight for IBF title September 21

Anthony Joshua could face the winner of the Filip Hrgovic and Daniel Dubois fight for the IBF world title at Wembley Stadium on September 21 should it get stripped off Oleksandr Usyk.

Usyk outpointed Tyson Fury in Saudi Arabia on May 18 to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion in 24 years, but it was expected that the Ukrainian would soon have the IBF belt taken from him.

The IBF title was expected to be on the line on Saturday, June 1, 2024, when mandatory challenger Filip Hrgovic fought Daniel Dubois in Riyadh, but the IBF decided to create an interim belt for that fight.

As a result, Usyk will keep the official title for the time being, as well as his undisputed status, though it is unclear whether the 37-year-old will be stripped before his rematch with Fury. That bout will take place in Riyadh on December 21.

However, if Usyk is stripped before then, Hrgovic or Dubois will be upgraded to become the official champion. It is also possible that the winner of Hrgovic/Dubois vs. Joshua will be upgraded after their fight instead.

Joshua, a two-time heavyweight champion who was at ringside for the Ukrainian’s split decision win over the Gipsy King, is enjoying a resurgence that began soon after his second consecutive loss to Usyk in 2022: beating Jermaine Franklin, Robert Helenius, Otto Wallin, and Francis Ngannou.

Eddie Hearn thinks the British Nigerian would have left Usyk’s victory over Fury, fancying his chances against both.

“I don’t think he’s that deep,” Hearn said on the True Geordie podcast when asked what would have been going through Joshua’s mind after the bout.

“I think probably deep down, he’s thinking, ‘Well, I lost, especially in the second fight, by a close points decision’.

“By the way, honestly, AJ was 50% of the fighter he is now. You saw in the press conference his reaction in the ring; he wasn’t himself, and I don’t think he was in a great place.

“Now he’s firing on every single cylinder that exists. So he’s watching that fight, thinking, ‘I’d love another crack at Usyk’. He’s thinking, ‘I’d love a fight with Fury, but he did say to me before that fight, ‘Usyk would win on points’ and he was right, in a great fight.”

Nigerian government declares position on labours’ N494,000 demand

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said the sum of N494,000 national minimum wage being demanded by organised labour, which cumulatively amounts to the sum of N9.5 trillion, is capable of destabilising the economy and jeopardising the welfare of over 200 million Nigerians.

Idris stated this at a news conference in Abuja in response to the threat by organised labour to embark on a strike if their demands were not met.

He said the offer of N60,000 minimum wage by the Federal Government, which translates to a 100% increase on the existing minimum wage of 2019, has been accepted by the organised private sector, which is a member of the tripartite committee of the negotiations team.

“The Federal Government’s New Minimum Wage proposal amounts to a 100 per cent increase on the existing minimum wage of 2019. Labour, however, wanted N494,000, which would increase by 1,547 per cent on the existing wage.

“The sum of N494,000 national minimum wage which Labour is seeking would cumulatively amount to the sum N9.5 trillion bill to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“Nigerians need to understand that whereas the FG is desirous of ample remuneration for Nigerian workers, what is most critical is that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not encourage any action that could lead to massive job loss, especially in the private sector, who may not be able to pay the wage demanded by the organised labour,” he said.

The minister said while labour is keen on the take-home pay of about 1.2 million workers, the Federal Government is concerned with the welfare of over 200 million Nigerians based on its guiding principles of affordability, sustainability, and the overall health of the nation’s economy.

Idris appealed to organised labour to return to the negotiating table and embrace reasonable and realistic wages for their members.

He said that because of the commitment of the Tinubu administration to the welfare of workers, the wage award of N35,000 for federal workers would continue until a new national minimum wage is introduced.

Ibadan electricity sacks Achife as MD, names replacement

The Board of Directors of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company has relieved Mr Kingsley Achife of his appointment as the company’s Managing Director.

The board refused to renew Achife’s contract, naming Francis Agoha as the Acting Managing Director of the IBEDC effective from May 31.

Achife’s sack was contained in an internal memo dated May 31, a copy of which was sighted by our correspondent.

“Dear colleagues, the Board of Directors of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company wishes to inform the staff that it has decided not to renew the contract of the current Managing Director, Engineer Kingsley Achife.

“The Board expresses its deepest gratitude to Engineer Kingsley Achife for his contributions to the company and for laying the foundation for the ongoing turnaround.

“In light of this decision, the Board is pleased to announce the appointment of the most senior executive, Engineer Francis Agoha as the Acting Managing Director of IBEDC. Engineer Francis Agoha will assume leadership responsibilities with immediate effect and will work closely with the Board to ensure a smooth transition,” the memo read in part.

The IBEDC board said it remains committed to delivering reliable electricity services to its customers and stakeholders.

“We are confident that this change in leadership will accelerate our journey towards sustainable growth, improved performance and a successful transition,” the memo from the management added.

Though no reason was given for the board’s decision, it may not be unconnected with complaints about the performances of the Disco among its contemporaries.

In March, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, summoned, among others, the outgoing managing director of the IBEDC to a crucial meeting.

Adelabu said despite the efforts of the ministry to increase power generation certain distribution companies like the IBEDC were failing to adequately distribute the power supplied, while vandalism of power infrastructure exacerbates the problem in regions such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.

On Thursday, Achife led the IBEDC to make a defence hearing against a sanction contained in an order on non-compliance with estimated billing issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission in February 2024

At the hearing, Achife stated that he was learning from the defence hearing and that he was against overbilling customers.

However, the Vice Chairman of NERC and chairman of the hearing panel, Musiliu Oseni, stated that NERC only decided to approve IBEDC’s request to hold the hearing, saying the appeal was filed beyond the sixty days allowed for the filing of an appeal against any regulatory judgement.

He mentioned that the combined NERC and IBEDC team will reach a resolution point.

The IBEDC spokesperson, Busolami Tunwase, said a statement would be released later, refusing to give details.

Barack Obama pens tribute to mother-in-law

Former US President, Barack Obama has penned a tribute to celebrate the times and legacies of mother-in-law, Marian Robinson.

The deceased’s daughter announced her death late Friday night.

She passed away at the age of 86.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama, via his Medium account, also shared a statement to reflect on the deceased life and times and legacy.

Posted late Friday night, it was titled, “Statement on the Passing of Mrs. Marian Robinson from Barack and Michelle Obama, Craig and Kelly Robinson, and their children.”

Obama described the deceased as a mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother, who became a steady and loving rock for her family.

“Marian Lois Shields Robinson — our mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother — had a way of summing up the truths about life in a word or two, maybe a quick phrase that made everyone around her stop and think.

“Her wisdom came off as almost innate, as something she was born with, but in reality, it was hard-earned, fashioned by her deep understanding that the world’s roughest edges could always be sanded down with a little grace.

She grew up one of seven children on the red-lined South Side of Chicago, the daughter of Purnell Shields and Rebecca Jumper. When she was a teenager, her parents separated and her mother supported herself as a nursing aide.

As a young woman, she studied to become a teacher before working as a secretary. She fell quickly and madly in love with Fraser Robinson, another South Sider with a boxer’s strength and jazz-lover’s cool. Together, they raised two children, Craig and Michelle, in a tiny upstairs apartment on Euclid Avenue in South Shore.

“She volunteered for the PTA and taught her children to read at an early age, sitting together as they sounded out words on a page, giving them the strength and confidence to walk to school — and out into the world — all on their own,” it partly read.

The statement noted that on US election night in 2008, when the news broke that Barack would soon shoulder the weight of the world, she was there, holding his hand.

“With a healthy nudge, she agreed to move to the White House with Michelle and Barack. We needed her. The girls needed her. And she ended up being our rock through it all.

“She relished her role as a grandmother to Malia and Sasha — just as she doted on Avery, Leslie, Austin, and Aaron. Less encumbered by the responsibilities of motherhood, she’d indulge in a little more fun and games while keeping any danger of spoiling her grandchildren safely at bay.

“After the White House, she returned to Chicago, reconnecting with longtime friends, trading wisecracks, travelling, and enjoying a good glass of wine. She passed peacefully this morning, and right now, none of us are quite sure how exactly we’ll move on without her,” it read further.

Acknowledging her calmness and support through it all, the former US president wrote, “As a mother, she was our backstop, a calm and nonjudgmental witness to our triumphs and stumbles. She was always, always there, welcoming us back home no matter how far we had journeyed, with that deep and abiding love.

“For Barack and Kelly, she was the best mother-in-law anyone could hope for. We would tease her sometimes that she’d need” to stop thinking that she was “imposing” on us because we always wanted to see more of her, not less.

“The whole world is full of little Craigs and little Michelle,” she’d often remind us, underlining the beauty and potential within every child.

Aryna Sabalenka overcame a sluggish start to defeat close friend Paula Badosa 7-5, 6-1 on Saturday to take her place in the last 16 of the French Open.

French Open, also known as Roland-Garros, is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments and is held annually in Paris, France.

The tournament was first held in 1891 and the event takes place at the Stade Roland-Garros, named after the French aviator Roland Garros.

Suspended police chief, Abba Kyari released after 27 months in detention

A suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory after spending 27 months in detention.

Kyari was detained following his arrest on February 14, 2022, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for alleged involvement with an international drug cartel.

Kyari, along with four members of the Police Intelligence Response Team—Sunday Ubia, Bawa James, Simon Agirigba, and John Nuhu—was arraigned on March 7, 2022.

Two suspected drug traffickers, Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, who were arrested at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, were also charged.

While Kyari and the IRT members pleaded not guilty, Umeibe and Ezenwanne pleaded guilty and were convicted.

Despite multiple applications, Kyari’s requests for bail were repeatedly denied until a recent decision by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

On May 22, 2024, Judge Emeka Nwite, granted Kyari bail to allow him to conclude the burial rites of his mother, Yachilla Kyari, who died on May 5.

As part of his bail conditions, Kyari was required to deposit his passport with the court and report to the nearest NDLEA office during the bail period.

The court scheduled May 31, 2024, for the hearing on Kyari’s main application for bail about the drug trafficking charges.

Giving updates, the spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service of the Federal Capital Territory Command, Adamu Duza, confirmed to our correspondent on Friday night that Kyari met his bail conditions and was released on Friday.

Duza said, “DCP Kyari has perfected his bail conditions, and has since been released today.”

Aisha Yesufu refuses to stand during rendition of re-introduced national anthem

Nigerian activist and politician, Aisha Yesufu, has publicly rejected the recently adopted national anthem, ‘Nigeria We Hail Thee’.

In a video which is presently making the rounds on all social media platforms, the activist who was in an event, chose to sit while others were standing during the recitation of the new anthem.

In the video most guests at the event were astonished by Aisha’s display.

While sharing a video clip that captured the moment on her official X handle, Aisha wrote, “Not my anthem”.

The National Assembly recently passed the National Anthem Bill 2024 despite the controversy that surrounded it.

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday signed the bill into law, jettisoning the ‘Arise O Compatriot’ anthem that was adopted in 1978.

Unless court nullifies the old anthem, I will continue singing the new national anthem – Sam Amadi

The Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, Sam Amadi, has given a reason he will sing the new National Anthem.

Amadi explained that the new National Anthem has become a law.

The former Executive Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, in a post on his X handle on Saturday said he will honour it unless the court nullifies the law, advising that everyone should as well honour it.

He said: “I will sing the new (old) National Anthem. It’s now the law.

“I deplore the logic of bringing it back now and the manner it was brought back.

“But unless the court nullifies the law, I will honour it. And everyone should honour it.”

Ukraine signs security agreements with Sweden, Iceland, Norway

Ukraine has signed security agreements with Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

“The agreement is a powerful signal to Russia that it is basically pointless to continue the war with the assumption that Western countries will tyre.”

Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson disclosed this on Friday before the signing ceremony in Stockholm.

Mr Kristersson described supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia as a “fundamental, existential task” for the countries of Northern Europe, whose security is also threatened by Russia’s actions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Sweden for the assistance provided.

“Only together can we stop the madness from Moscow,” he emphasised.

The agreements are initially valid for 10 years.

Ukraine has already signed similar security deals with Denmark and Finland.

Mr Zelensky is in Stockholm for the third Ukraine-Northern Europe Summit.

According to Mr Kristersson, talks were planned on the provision of further air defence, a peace summit in Switzerland in June, and helping Ukraine on its path to joining the NATO military alliance and the European Union.

Mr Zelensky also has separate meetings with the heads of government of Finland, Denmark, Norway and Iceland.

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has approved the reduction of registration fees for all students studying at the Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna by fifty percent.

He explained that the move was part of efforts to ease the burden on parents following the removal of fuel subsidy.

In a statement signed by the Pro-Chancellor, Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna, Professor Muhammed Yahaya Kuta, Bago said the gesture aims to alleviate the compounding financial hardships on parents.

The decision would reduce the effect of the current economic hardship on passionate students and their parents, who may be suffering from the consequences of fuel subsidy removal and economic hardship,” he stated.

The university explained that all students studying regular courses in the institution are to enjoy the total relief of a 50% reduction in the registration fee in the ongoing 2023/2024 academic session.

It further implored beneficiaries of the government’s kind gesture to reciprocate by being more committed to their studies for the development of the state and humanity at large.

An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, on Friday, ordered the remand of a 33-year-old man, Kabiru Arewa, in a correctional facility for allegedly killing his 24-year-old wife, Suliyat.

He directed the police to return the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice and, thereafter, adjourned the case till June 28, for mention.

The Prosecutor, ASP Anthony Igori, had earlier told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 22 at about 8.00 pm at the Olunloyo area of Ibadan.

Igori said the defendant unlawfully caused the death of his wife by hitting her with his fist blow on the chest.

He said the offence was contrary to Section 319 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

Trump must not return to Oval office –President Joe Biden

The United States, US, President, Joe Biden has urged Americans to ensure that his predecessor, Donald Trump never returns to the White House as president.

Biden said the only way to kick Trump out of the Oval Office is through the ballot box.

Trump was President of the US from 2017 to 2021 and he was kicked out of the presidency by Biden.

But, the former president has signified interest to return to the White House on November 5, 2024.

Donald Trump denounces conviction by US court

Former President of the United States Donald Trump has expressed disgust over his conviction on all 34 counts bordering on falsifying business records in his historic criminal trial in New York.

Trump called the judgment a “disgrace” and attacked Judge Merchan, who presided over the case.

The judgment marked the first time a former or serving US president has been convicted of a crime and Trump is due to be sentenced on 11 July even as he faces a possible prison term, but legal experts said a fine is more likely.

In spite of the convictions and the dent in his spirited efforts to unseat current President Joe Biden in the November elections, Trump could still run for the election.

The court heard from 22 witnesses over six weeks, including Stormy Daniels, whose alleged sexual encounter with Trump was at the centre of this case.

According to analysts, Donald Trump’s criminal conviction presents a remarkable collection of historic firsts.

He’s the first former or serving US president to be found guilty of a crime and the first presumptive major-party nominee to become a convicted felon as well.

While Trump plans his appeal in the hush-money case and awaits a sentence on 11 July that could in theory include prison time and a hefty fine, it’s not too early to consider the political fallout.

“We often look to history to find some kind of hint of what’s going to happen,” Jeffrey Engel, Director of the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University said.

“But there is nothing in the record that comes even close to this,” he added.

No one is above the law – Biden campaign reacts as Trump is found guilty

President Joe Biden’s campaign has said Donald Trump’s conviction by a New York court on Thursday shows that “no one is above the law”.

Trump was found guilty of all 34 counts he faced on charges of falsifying business records to commit election fraud.

This makes the 77-year-old the first ex-American president to be criminally convicted.

A statement signed by Michael Tyler, the Biden-Harris campaign communications director, said: “In New York today, we saw that no one is above the law.

“But today’s verdict does not change the fact that the American people face a simple reality.

“There is still only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: at the ballot box.”

Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on July 11.

Student Loan: Nigerian government gets 30,000 successful applicants, announces date to commence 2nd phase

Nigerian government says about 30,000 students have successfully applied for its loan scheme barely seven days after the portal was launched on 24th May, 2024.

Akintunde Sawyerr, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday while giving an update on the scheme.

Sawyerr explained that the about 30,000 students who have successfully applied are currently undergoing approval evaluation.

The MD revealed that applications will be opened for state higher institutions to apply for the loan on 25th June 2024.

According to him, the scheme goes beyond providing financial assistance to students to equipping youths with employable skills.

He announced that NELFUND will commence a launch of comprehensive skills acquisition skills in various vocational and technical fields.

“Beyond financial assistance, NELFUND recognizes the profound importance of equipping our youth with practical, market-relevant skills.

“Six months from today, we will launch a comprehensive skills acquisition program, providing training in various vocational and technical fields.

“This program is designed to prepare students to meet the demands of the modern job market, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation among our young people.

“Sixty thousand are those who have registered on the platform. About 30,000 have successfully applied for the loan but that does not mean the 30,000 have been approved. Up until this point, nobody has been given the loan. Now is the time for evaluation.

“The overwhelming response serves as a testament to the critical need for financial assistance among our student population, and we remain committed to addressing this urgent demand,” he said.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu signed the Access to Higher Education Act, 2023, into law to provide Nigerian students with financial assistance.

Nigerian government to roll out 5000 CNG tricycles

The Presidential CNG Initiative has said the Nigerian federal government has concluded plans to roll out 5,000 Compressed Natural Gas-powered tricycles over the next three months.

Michael Oluwagbemi, the Programme Director and Chief Executive of P-CNGi, disclosed this on Thursday at the inauguration of the Luojia Tricycle Assembly plant in Ogun State.

Oluwagbemi said the government had introduced several incentives, including Value Added Tax exemptions and Custom duty waivers for CNG-powered tricycles and other vehicles entering the country.

He added that the program would generate at least 60 direct jobs and 6000 indirect jobs in Nigeria.

“The 5,000 tricycles form part of the initial units acquired by the government under the Presidential CNG Initiative, which aims to enhance affordable and eco-friendly transportation across Nigeria and to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal.

“It will generate at least 60 direct jobs and over 6,000 indirect jobs. This collaboration with the private sector in implementing this initiative would boost economic growth and increase tax revenue for the government,” he said.

The development comes as the Government on Thursday commissioned 5.2 million standard cubic feet per day, mmscfd Compressed Natural Gas, CNG plant in Lagos.

In April 2024, the Nigerian government fixed the price of Compressed Natural Gas at $1.57MMBtu.

President Tinubu had ordered ministries, agencies and parastatals to purchase CNG vehicles.

Businesses, including markets, schools, banks and motor parks on some popular streets in Awka, the Anambra State capital, were on Thursday closed in honour of the Biafra remembrance day announced by outlawed secessionist group, Indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB.

The ever-busy Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, as of 9 am, was devoid of human and vehicular movements, as popular motor parks around the city were also deserted.
