US Senate passes first gun control bill, its most significant gun legislation in 3 decades.

The US Senate has passed a gun control bill the most significant firearms legislation in 30 years.

The bill comes after mass shootings last month at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and a primary school in Uvalde, Texas, that left 31 people dead.

Fifteen Republicans joined Democrats in the upper chamber of Congress to approve the measure by 65 votes to 33 on Thursday June 23.

The bill will now have to pass in the House of Representatives before US President Biden can sign it into law.

In a statement released after the vote, the president called on members of the House to “promptly vote on this bipartisan bill and send it to my desk”.

“Tonight, after 28 years of inaction, bipartisan members of Congress came together to heed the call of families across the country and passed legislation to address the scourge of gun violence in our communities,”  Biden said.

“Families in Uvalde and Buffalo — and too many tragic shootings before — have demanded action. And tonight, we acted.”

The reforms include tougher background checks for buyers younger than 21 and $15bn (£12.2bn) in federal funding for mental health programs and school security upgrades.

It also calls for funding to encourage states to implement “red flag” laws to remove firearms from people considered a threat.

And it closes the so-called “boyfriend loophole” by blocking gun sales to those convicted of abusing unmarried intimate partners.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has vowed to take the bill through the House quickly, despite Republican leader Kevin McCarthy urging his members to vote against the bill.

“First thing tomorrow morning, the Rules Committee will meet to advance this life-saving legislation to the floor,”  Pelosi said after the vote.

The bill is also significant because it is the first time in decades that proposed reforms have received this level of support from both Democrats and Republicans. Historically, efforts to strengthen US gun laws have been blocked by the Republican party.

All 50 Democrats, including the party’s most conservative members, Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, were joined by deal-making Republicans, including the party’s Senate Leader Mitch McConnell and close Trump ally Lindsey Graham.

The US has the highest rate of firearms deaths among the world’s wealthy nations – more than 20,900 people have been killed in gun violence in the US this year, including through homicide and suicide, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit research group.

Ukraine to begin first trial of Russian soldier accused of rape.

Ukraine will on Thursday, June 23 hold a preliminary hearing in its first trial of a Russian soldier charged with raping a Ukrainian woman during Russia’s invasion.

The human rights abuse trial is the first of what could be dozens of such cases.

The suspect, Mikhail Romanov, 32, who is not in Ukrainian custody and will be tried in absentia, is accused of murdering a civilian in the Kyiv capital region on March 9 and then repeatedly raping the man’s wife, according to court files in Ukraine.

Romanov is accused of raping a 33-year-old woman after he and another Russian soldier shot her husband Oleksiy at point blank in the village of Bohdanivka to the northeast of Kyiv.

The two soldiers then left and later returned twice more to rape her, the court files said. The identity of the second soldier had not been established.

Moscow has denied allegations of war crimes.

It was not immediately clear what kind of legal representation Romanov would have at the trial, which will be held behind closed doors.

Ukrainian officials, activists and doctors have said that many survivors are afraid or unwilling to come forward to the police and prosecutors with their cases, for fear of reprisals from Russia and stigma from their Ukrainian neighbors.

A spokesperson for the Prosecutor General’s office said that a prosecutor might comment about the trial publicly after Thursday’s hearing.

Girl, 4, dies after parents leave her in car to attend funeral

A girl died in a car after her parents left her inside with the doors locked to attend a funeral.

Sadia, 4, had arrived for the funeral service with her family in Ramhormoz, Iran, while temperatures outside reached 49C.

She was sleeping when she was left in the car, where the mercury climbed to 79C inside – which is hot enough to roast a chicken.

By the time her parents realized she was in the car, Sadia was found unconscious.

Medics confirmed the girl died from heat stroke and suffocation.

The head of Ramhormoz’s forensics department Dr Gholamreza Haidarnejad said: “A young couple left their four-year-old child sleeping in a car when they went to mourn the little girl’s aunt.

“The parents who decided not to wake the child then forgot her because of their distress during the funeral.

“The child was left in the car for several hours in hot, sunny weather and the car doors were locked.”

The doctor added that the child died because of stress, heat intensity and lack of oxygen.

The devastated couple is receiving counselling and local police are investigating the tragedy.

Ted Sanderson, 14, died at Woodham Academy in County Durham, England, on Tuesday, June 21.

The schoolboy was rushed to James Cook University Hospital, but medics were unable to save his life.

His sudden death has left his family, friends and wider school community in shock.

Lynn Wilson, his grandmother, said: “He was a gorgeous boy. He knew everything.

“He was so much fun and he had so much character. He was perfect.

Ghislaine Maxwell should serve at least 30 years in prison for her role in the sexual abuse of teenage girls, prosecutors say.

Disgraced  British socialite and convicted sex offender, Ghislaine Maxwell should serve at least 30 years in prison for her role in the sexual abuse of teenage girls, US prosecutors have said ahead of a sentencing hearing.

The British socialite and former accomplice to billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein is currently awaiting sentencing.

She was convicted in December of recruiting teenage girls for US financier Jeffrey Epstein to sexually abuse from 1994 to 2004. He killed himself, aged 66, in a New York federal jail in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

Maxwell’s lawyers have previously argued she should serve no more than four or five years in prison and claim she has faced onerous and punitive jail conditions since her arrest in July 2020.

The Lawyers said her life is now in danger, claiming: “There are numerous prison inmates who would not hesitate to kill Ms Maxwell – whether for money, fame or simple ‘street cred’.”

An inmate had recently threatened to kill Maxwell, saying an extra 20 years in jail “would be worth the money she’d receive for murdering Ms Maxwell”. The inmate had been moved “presumably to protect Ms Maxwell”.

In a submission to the courts, her lawyers said “the correct sentencing range under the United States Sentencing Guidelines is 51-63 months, not the 292-365 month range calculated by the US Probation Office”.

In two documents filed by her lawyers, Maxwell asked the court to take account of the “unusually harsh” conditions she was held in while awaiting trial.

In new court filings, the 60-year-old’s conduct was described as “shockingly predatory” and her crimes “monstrous”.

Giving their recommendations to the US District Judge Alison Nathan, prosecutors said complaints of poor conditions in her cell were not a good enough reason for a reduced sentence.

They wrote: “Going from being waited on hand and foot to incarceration is undoubtedly a shocking and unpleasant experience.”

Federal sentencing guidelines indicate Maxwell should serve between 30 and 55 years in prison.

Prosecutors wrote: “As part of a disturbing agreement with Jeffrey Epstein, Maxwell identified, groomed and abused multiple victims, while she enjoyed a life of extraordinary luxury and privilege.

“In her wake, Maxwell left her victims permanently scarred with emotional and psychological injuries. That damage can never be undone, but it can be accounted for in crafting a just sentence for Maxwell’s crimes.”

Tinubu was never indicted over the matter – Sanwo-Olu’s aide defends APC presidential candidate after Bloomberg article alleging that US accused him of laundering proceeds of heroin trafficking

Jubril Gawat, a Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state on New Media, has defended All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu after a Bloomberg article about him.

Bloomberg had shared an article titled “Graft Allegations Dog Nigeria’s Main Presidential Hopefuls”, centered of Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu.

In the article, it was stated that Tinubu who is a former Governor of Lagos state, “fought a lawsuit in which the US accused him of laundering proceeds of heroin trafficking and eventually reached a settlement”.

It read;

Front-runner Bola Tinubu, who secured the ruling party’s nomination earlier this month, was being investigated by the country’s anti-corruption agency as recently as last June. Three decades ago he fought a lawsuit in which the US government accused him of laundering the proceeds of heroin trafficking and eventually reached a settlement.

In July 1993, when Tinubu briefly served as a Nigerian senator, the US government filed a forfeiture lawsuit in Chicago against bank accounts in his name, claiming there was “probable cause” to believe they held the proceeds of heroin dealing. The case followed a probe by the Internal Revenue Service and other agencies into a trafficking network involving Nigerian suppliers.

The IRS secured warrants in January 1992 to seize almost $2 million, according to court filings. While living in Chicago between 1989 and 1991, Tinubu had deposited more than $1.8 million into one of the accounts, before transferring large sums to another bank, according to the US government’s complaint. While disputing the US’s reason for targeting the accounts, Tinubu settled in September 1993, agreeing to give up $460,000 to the US government in exchange for the release of the rest of the money. Tinubu wasn’t indicted over the matter.

Gawat who reacted to the article, shared a screenshot of the part which stated that Tinubu was never indicted. He tweeted “Tinubu was never indicted over the matter”.

I make more in a month than my mum made a year when she worked in the NHS. But if she calls I drop everything and answer- Iroko TV boss writes after Twitter user said becoming self reliant takes control from Nigerian parents.

Iroko TV boss, Jason Njoku, is against the ideology that being self-reliant should make Nigerians not submissive to their parents.

Njoku shared this thought after seeing a Tweet from a Nigerian that said one of the ways to speak up for oneself against Nigerian parents is having their own money and being self-reliant. The Twitter user had written.

”No matter the advice anyone wants to give on handling/speaking up for yourself against (Nigerian) parents nothing beats having your own money & being self reliant. Its no joke when they say money & independence stops nonsense. It takes away a lot of control people can have on you

There’s also a sense of self respect & “I don’t have to take this shit” attitude that grows in you as you make your own money & handle your life, you know that, they know that so now there’s more room for open convos, respect, you paying no mind etc. The hold is loosened or gone”

Reacting to the tweet, Njoku pointed out that he makes more money in a month than what his mum made in a year while she was still working. He said this however has not stopped him from showing her respect, if not for anything because she is his mum. Speaking as a parent himself, Njoku said that If one’s parents tried for them, all they need to do is drop their ego and try for them. He stressed that they fail to be there for their parents, he guarantees that their kids will treat them in the same way.

‘We had a lot of talks and I felt the great interest of this big club from the start. So there was no doubt in my mind right from the start.

‘This is the right time for this challenge. I want to achieve a lot with this club.’

The Senegal star, who arrived at Anfield from Southampton in 2016 for £34m, played his last match for the Reds in the Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid.

In a farewell interview with Liverpool, Mane added: ‘Obviously it is strange – really, really strange – to no longer be a Liverpool player after six years spent at Anfield.

‘But of course I had a great time, an unbelievable time, and since my first day I really, really enjoyed training, playing, at Anfield especially and in front of these amazing supporters. Now it’s come to the end, so what can you say?

‘I think whoever is leaving Liverpool, with those supporters you will always miss them because so far [they are] the best in the world and I have always said it.

‘I would love one day to come back to Anfield to say hi to them and of course to watch Liverpool playing because for me, I am going to be Liverpool’s No.1 fan – after the supporters!’.

When asked about the prospect of returning to Anfield in the Champions League, he said: ‘You know the Champions League and how the draw always goes on, it can happen for sure and if it happens it happens.

‘It is football and of course I have to come and I have to play. But like I said, Liverpool is Liverpool and we will see. We will see what is going to happen.’

Ekweremadu also likened voting for Peter Obi as “throwing away votes”.

Reacting to this, Madubuko stated that “it will soon be time for another new yam festival ol boy”, in reference to Ekweremadu being beaten up in Germany after he turned up for a New Yam Festival he was invited for in 2019.
