Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah has announced the arrest of a senior Islamic State member responsible for deadly attacks in capital Tripoli in 2018.

The Libyan prime minister vowed to fight all forms of terrorism in and outside the country, pledging to work to stabilise the country, reform the security and military institutions and normalise life in all parts of Libya.

In 2018, the IS carried out three attacks in Tripoli on the headquarters of the Higher Commission of Elections, the National Oil Corporation, and the Foreign Ministry.

No fewer than 19 people were killed in the attacks while dozens of others were injured.

Soludo removes RoW charges for broadband

The Anambra government on Thursday said it started implementing zero charges on Right of Way (RoW) per linear meter in the state.

Fred Agbata, the managing director of Anambra State Information Communication Technology Agency, disclosed this at a media parley in Lagos.

Mr Agbata said, by implication, Anambra prided itself as the first state in the South-East to implement the waiver of the per linear meter RoW charges.

He said the National Economic Council had, in 2020, recommended N145 per linear meter RoW charge, a fee Anambra has now removed.

Right of Way (RoW) is the legal right, established by grant from a landowner or long usage, to pass along a specific route through property belonging to another.

A similar right of access also exists on land held by a government, lands that are typically called public land, state land, or Crown land.

According to Mr Agbata, the move to forgo the RoW charge is in line with the ‘Everything Technology and Technology Everywhere’ vision of Governor Charles Soludo.

“The Anambra ICT agency is working in partnership with GICL to deploy about 200km of fibre optic cables. This is under the first phase of the Anambra digital adoption plan. This broadband initiative targets ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) of the state government as well as schools and other clusters,” stated Mr Agbata.

He added,

‘’The state governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, has demonstrated huge interest in deploying modern strategies to eliminate bottlenecks to digital access, by reversing infrastructure decline in the state.

Our partnership with GICL will boost WiFi hotspot rollout to government offices, schools and communities to diversify the economy, leveraging digital services for eGovernment, commerce, education and innovation.”

The implementation of the Right of Way charges removal by the Anambra government “is the first step to a digital economy that will encourage key investors, innovators, and businesses to the state,’’ Mr Agbata stressed.

He stressed that without connectivity, e-government programmes would become a mirage.

“Africa’s digital landscape is changing at a rapid rate and Anambra is no different. This connectivity achieved in this first phase will be used to power the governor’s lodge, and by extension, a local government and a university, as a pilot,” Mr Agbata explained.

He added that the agency had continued to standardise the state government’s digital assets by moving all government websites to www.anambrastate.gov.ng.

According to him, the agency has initiated a statewide migration of all government assets to the internet domain name anambrastate.gov.ng.

Inspector-General of Police urges Nigerians from taking complaints against police officers to social media

The acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has appealed to Nigerians to desist from taking complaints against police officers to social media.

The police chief made the appeal while speaking at a stakeholders meeting at the headquarters of the police command in Ibadan, Oyo stateon Tuesday, August 22.

In his words;

“If you have any complaint against the police, don’t go to social media. Go to the commissioners of police in the state. Some of our men will misbehave, we cannot guarantee that all of them will behave well.

Report to the CPs or any superior officer who will take it up and ensure justice is done. There are a lot of falsehoods going on on social media. If you need clarification, go to the commissioners of police or police public relations officers (PPROs).”

Egbetokun said his mission is to put in place professional, service-driven, rule-of-law-compliant, and people-friendly police officers. He said he is desirous of having a police force that would be able to respond adequately to the dynamics of crime and criminality in society and “ensure citizens sleep with their two eyes closed”.

“Modern policing is community-based, technology-driven, and intelligence-led. We are going to focus on community in all the states of the federation.

But we are shifting to new policing strategies. We are going to adopt community policing by taking cognisance of certain peculiarities of each community through collaboration with other security agencies and state-owned security outfits to fight and reduce crime.”he said

But he added that the victim’s brother had not given up the search for his sinling in the river.

Lagos assembly asks Sanwo-Olu to convene security council meeting over killings

The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to convene a security council meeting.

The parliament said the meeting would help stem the spate of alleged killings of residents by security operatives.

The parliament passed the resolution at a plenary under a motion of ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance’ by Kehinde Joseph (APC-Alimosho II).

Recently, federal lawmaker Olamilekan Adeola said his aide, Adeniyi Sanni, was murdered by unknown military personnel in July, adding that his corpse was later discovered at the Ladipo Bus Stop along Oshodi-Mile 2 Expressway.

The parliament also reacted to the recent fracas between soldiers and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) personnel.

The speaker of the parliament, Mudashiru Obasa, stressed that security of lives and property should remain government’s priority.

“Where we begin to have one, two, three killings in the state, it definitely calls for concern. I quite agree with the prime mover of the motion to call on Mr. Governor to quickly hold a meeting with all heads of security agencies in Lagos state to nip this in the bud,” stated Mr Obasa.

“At least three people have been declared dead, said to be killed by men in either police or army uniforms and we cannot conclude if they are security men or otherwise.”

Mr Joseph, the prime mover of the motion, recalled that there were other killings on August 17 and 19.

“The funny thing is that the series of killings took the same pattern. Adeniyi Sanni’s wife told me that her husband was stopped at a checkpoint by men in military uniforms. They requested documents which the wife sent through WhatsApp to him. His corpse was later found somewhere.

“Same was the case of Mr Lawal who was stopped and asked for his documents. They later dropped his corpse in Iyana-Ipaja area,” the legislator said.

Mr Joseph moved that the police should be asked to tighten security in Lagos while the military should fish out its bad eggs.

Bonu Saanu (APC-Badagry 1) observed that it was becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate between fake security operatives and genuine ones.

The speaker, thereafter, asked the clerk of the house, Lekan Onafeko, to forward the resolution of the parliament to the governor.

Governor Otti restates promise to make Abia great

Governor Alex Otti has reiterated his commitment to develop Abia to a “state of our dream.”

Specifically, the secretary to the state government, Kenneth Kalu, reaffirmed the commitment Mr Otti’s government to create an enabling environment for people and businesses to thrive.

Mr Kalu said this in Umuahia, while addressing journalists on the activities outlined for the 2023 Abia Day celebration on August 27. The event would mark the 32nd anniversary of the state.

He said the Abia government was determined “to transform Abia into the state of our dream.”

“To create an Abia, where roads are motorable, teachers are motivated and appreciated, functional general hospitals, civil servants are punctual and government is using the available resources to provide infrastructure for even development,” Mr Kalu said.

He said the Otti government would unveil the Abia State Orientation Agency to deepen the citizen and government interface needed to facilitate the realisation of the government’s rebuilding agenda.

Mr Kalu said as part of Mr Otti’s efforts to build a new and better Abia, the theme of the event, ‘Abia: Hitting the reset button’, was carefully selected to emphasise the need for value reorientation in Abia.

“This is why we are unveiling a new Abia State Orientation Agency to foster unity of purpose towards building the Abia of our dreams,” he said.

Mr Kalu explained that the celebration would be marked with a week-long event, including the distribution of livelihood materials to the less privileged, Jumat prayers, interdenominational church service, novelty football game, special sanitation exercise and a free medical outreach, amongst others.

Lawyers destroying judiciary in Nigeria: Deputy Governor Ewhrudjakpo

Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo has urged legal practitioners in Nigeria to protect the image of the judiciary.

“Lawyers must learn how to restrain themselves because by our conduct, we are reducing the status and estimation of the judiciary in the eyes of the public. We must know that our profession is on trial in this country,” stated the Bayelsa deputy governor.

He added,

We must tell ourselves the bitter truth. The nobleness of our profession is fast eroding, and so, we have to work hard to redeem the image of the legal profession.”

Mr Ewhrudjakpo made the call when a joint delegation of the Sagbama and Yenagoa branches of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the leadership of the Young Lawyers Forum, Sagbama chapter, visited him in Yenagoa.

Mr Ewhrudjakpo took a swipe at lawyers encouraging their clients to disrespect court orders and judgments.

“The judiciary is under trial in the country. Therefore, those who truly love the profession must do everything within their reach to redeem its image as the beacon of hope for the common man and defender of the rule of law,” he stressed.

Also addressing the Young Lawyers Forum led by Peres Agari, the deputy governor urged young lawyers to be studious and make innovation and smartness their watchword to achieve success in the legal career.

“When I was growing up, lawyers restrained themselves from talking about cases that are sub judice (in court). But today, we even discuss the merit and demerit of a case on television and on the pages of newspapers,” stated Mr Ewhrudjakpo.

“A lawyer going to TV to hold a press conference on subsisting cases and justifying why one arm of government or the other will not obey a court order; to me, that is taking patronage too far.”

Police arraign two for N2.3 million wire theft

On Wednesday, two men appeared at the Magbon Alade Magistrates’ Court in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, for allegedly conspiring with others at large to steal electric wire worth N2.3 million.

The police charged Adedeji Waris, 27, and Isiaka Bello, 20, with conspiracy, felony and stealing.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, ASP Ekundayo Friday, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on August 19 at about 3:00 p.m. on Jehovah Witness Road, Bogije, Ibeju-Lekki.

Mr Friday said the defendants, with others at large, stole an electric wire valued at N2.3 million belonging to Tedar Grows School.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The magistrate, Olumide Fusika, admitted the defendants to N500,000 bail each, with two sureties in like sum.

Ms Fusika added that the sureties must have two years of tax receipt, and their addresses must be verified.

She adjourned the case until August 31 for mention.

Court grants N500m bail to Lagos bizman accused of bribing cops with N50m

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Maitama has granted N500m bail to a Lagos businessman, Dr. Akintoye Akindele, accused of offering a N50m bribe to men of the Nigeria Police Force.

Akindele, who has been in police custody for weeks, was arraigned on Tuesday on a charge.

The suit was marked: CR/595/2023 and was filed in the name of the Inspector General of Police.

The prosecution claimed the defendant offered to bribe policemen, who were investigating a case of funds diversion brought against him, to enable him to escape abroad.

The charge reads:

“That you Akintoye Akindele, male (49 years), MD/CEO of Duport Midstream Company Limited of D2 Mambilla Close Osborne Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos between August 5 and 9 2023 in Abuja, while being investigated by SP Ibrahim Ezekiel Sini and his team on a petition submitted to the Inspector General of Police FIB by Summit Oil International Limited on allegation of diversion of the sum of $5,636,397.01 and N73,543,763.25, you offered gratification of N150,000,000.00 and made part payment of N50,000,000.00 to SP Ibrahim Sini, a public servant in circumstance and to allow you to escape abroad and to write a report in your favour.”

The prosecution claimed the alleged offence is punishable under Section 118 of the Penal Code Law.

Akindele, however, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him, after which his lawyer applied for his bail.

Justice Hamza Muazu, in a ruling on Tuesday, rejected the request by the lawyer for the prosecution, Simon Lough SAN to further detain the defendant to enable the police conclude its investigation.

Justice Muazu agreed with the defence lawyer, Henry Eni-Otu that the offence, with which the defendant was charged, is ordinarily bailable.

He granted Akindele bail to the tune of N500m with two sureties in like sum.

Justice Muazu, who is sitting as the court’s vacation judge, said one of the sureties must own a landed property within the jurisdiction and should be a resident of the Federal Capital Territory.

The judge ordered the defendant to deposit his international passport with the court.

He noted that since it will be impossible to conclude the case during the vacation, which will soon end, it was nearer to return the case file to the court’s Chief Judge for reassignment to a regular court after the vacation.

Justice Muazu then ordered the return of the case file to the Chief Judge for reassignment.
