Wike makes U-turn, joins #EndSARS protests

After over three hours of wait by #EndSARS protesters who converged at the Government House, Port Harcourt, for Governor Nyesom Wike to address them, the latter later joined the protesters and called for the total reform of the Nigeria Police Force.

The governor, who had banned #EndSARS protests in the state last night, made a U-turn on Tuesday.

Wike while addressing the protesters said though he was not in support of the Tuesday protest, he noted that no governor in the country had protested against the security outfit as he has done.

He said, “I never supported us to be here. I took an oath to protect the lives and property of people of the state. The blood of Rivers of people matters to me.

“Rivers State has suffered in the hands of SARS. When we raised the alarm of SARS activities, they did not give attention but it has now happened in other places.

“No governor in this country can say they have challenged SARS the way we have done. When there was so much kidnapping in this state, I raised an alarm to the federal government.

“I am the only governor that has come out to start end SARS protest. No other state. We have lost so many people in this state to SARS. No state supported us. SARS has killed our people a lot,” he stated.

Senate orders arrest of killers of #EndSARS protesters

The Nigerian Senate has ordered the immediate arrest of those responsible for the killing of scores of protests during demonstrations against the perceived brutality meted out by operatives of the dreaded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The motion was put forward before the Red Chamber of the National Assembly on Tuesday during plenary by Senator Buhari Abdulfatai who brought before the House the death of a member of his constituent, Jimoh Isiaka and attack on the Palace of Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi.

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, stated that the conduct of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) was not acceptable.

He also regretted that their actions will be noted in Nigeria’s history.

“The entire essence of the Nigeria Police Force is to ensure there is law and order and when SARS turned against the people, it was right for the people to protest.

“The protest has yielded the desired result so far and there won’t be need to continue again when SARS has been disbanded. Those culprits who are involved in the killings should be brought to book,” Senator Lawan added.

FG set to give 774,000 jobs to youths.

The government will continue with policies of social protection and people empowerment despite the challenges posed by COVID-19 pandemic, President Muhammadu Buhari said on Monday.

The President spoke at the State House during the launch of the Presidential Youth Empowerment Scheme (P-YES). He restated his administration’s commitment to youth development and poverty alleviation.

The President, who described P-YES as a cornerstone of his administration’s social and economic development strategies, said it was part of the overall policy of ensuring that 100 million Nigerians were lifted out of poverty in 10 years.

The P-YES launch, which is aimed at creating 774,000 jobs across the local government areas, was attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmed Lawan, Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi.

The President said: “The P-YES is also part of the plan that we adopted in 2016 in which we empowered One hundred youths from each of the 774 local government areas with the necessary tools to acquire skills and establish small businesses.

“Given the success of that initiative, we are now committed to creating 774,000 jobs across all the LGAs, through the P-YES programme.”

President Buhari, who took a tour of P-YES tools and equipment displayed at the forecourt of Presidential Villa expressed delight that the materials showcased represent the fruits of the initiatives by his administration in 2016.

“All the tools, machines and equipment that are exhibited here, are products of the efforts of these empowered youth entrepreneurs.

“I note with particular pleasure that they were all fabricated in Nigeria by Nigerian youths using locally sourced materials. This is a wonderful and uplifting achievement.

“As an entrepreneurship empowerment project, the P-YES programme aims to address the needs of unskilled and less educated youth.

“It targets key areas of activities that are of practical importance and are essential to every aspect of our economy.

“These include areas such as agriculture and food processing, restaurant and catering, tailoring and fashion design, technical skills such as in the Information and Communications Technology sector, artisanship, welding, carpentry and joinery, other small businesses and activities associated with the micro-economic sector of this economy.”

The President urged states, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAS) of government to factor the P-YES into their programmes to assist the youth to realise their potentials in their chosen fields.

He urged local and foreign private sector operators to contribute their share to the expansion of the programme through channelling their corporate social responsibility efforts towards skills acquisition, creation of start-ups, and other intervention measures.

President Buhari declared that the expansion of the P-YES would be vigorously pursued, adding that more resources would be committed to the achievement of its goals and objectives towards youth empowerment and entrepreneurship development.

The President commended the Office of the Senior Special Assistant on Youth and Students Affairs, under Hon. Nasiru Saidu Adhama, for driving the P-YES programme in accordance with the mandates prescribed for the office and the programme.

We are worried about President Muhammadu Buhari’s silence . -Northern Elders

The organisation said that apart from Maiduguri town, there had been no community in Borno State where people could sleep with their eyes closed.

Members of the Coalition of Concern Northern Elders for Peace and Development on Monday expressed concern over the continued silence of the President Muhammadu Buhari to the growing calls for him to rejig the security architecture in the country.

According to them, the resolutions of the National Assembly that the President should act swiftly to stop the increasingly bad situation was enough for him to act, given that they are the representatives of the people.

The COCONEPD, in a statement by its National Chairman, Dr Mohammed Suleiman, and National Secretary, Hajiya Mairo Buni, said the worsening security situation in the country had caused untold hardship on women and children in both the North-East and the North-West.

The organisation said the insecurity in the country had reached a boiling point, adding that only the sacking of service chiefs as the first step in addressing the ugly development could be acceptable by Nigerians.

The northern elders said that the 2021 budget proposal that was presented to the National Assembly by the President could be difficult to fund should the President fail to address the situation immediately.

The statement read in part, We are compelled by the current state of the nation, especially as it affects the security of lives and property in Nigeria, particularly in the North to issue this press statement.

This coalition became very necessary and urgent to lend our voice to the growing insecurity and call for the sacking of the current service chiefs and total overhaul of the security architecture of our country before it is too late.

We are worried about President Muhammadu Buhari’s silence despite calls by every arm of Nigeria, including the National Assembly. Some international organisations and authorities have faulted our security architecture and called for the need to restructure the same, yet Mr President is still not moved?

Is he waiting for all Nigerians to die first? In a constitutional democracy, the people are the employers of the President, and for a President to write his name in gold, he must listen to the people.

We in this group insist that President Buhari is a good man that means very well for Nigeria and Nigerians, but we strongly believe that he is being misled daily in the happenings of the security.

No Nigerian sleep with his eyes closed anymore. Our roads and homes are no longer safe because of robbery, kidnapping, banditry and Boko Haram terrorists.

The organisation said that apart from Maiduguri town, there had been no community in Borno State where people could sleep with their eyes closed.

The COCONEPD said while malnutrition is the order of the day in IDPs’ camps across North-East, investors had been leaving the country daily because of insecurity.

The group added, We call on the President to take this first step and follow it up with restructuring the entire security architecture of the country for utmost results. Nigerians, especially the youths, are tired of the level of insecurity in the country. The large turnout by youths on the #EndSARS campaign across the country is an indication that Nigerians are tired of excuses.

Forget restructuring and creation of additional state in the zone.- Walter Obiora-Oji tells Buhari.

The Chancellor, Nigeria Presidential Project 2023, Walter Obiora-Oji, on Sunday, urged the President, Maj-Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to forget restructuring and creation of additional state in the zone, but ensure the objective of the Igbo to produce the nation’s president come 2023, was achieved.

This is even he observed that those currently clamouring for the restructuring of the country were doing do for their selfish interests, saying anyone talking about restructuring was “merely trying to change the narrative from zoning to restructuring.”

Obiora-Oji stated this during the inauguration of the Ebonyi State chapter of the group in Abakaliki, pointing out that it was imperative for major political parties to zone their respective National Chairmen to the North in their forthcoming conventions, to actualise the dream.

According to him, the only way Buhari will prove that he genuinely loves the Igbo is to hand over to one of their sons or daughters, saying it was the height of marginalisation that other zones had produced the nation’s President since 1999, while the South-East zone remained sidelined.

I am tired!

Nigerian youths are complaining and showing their grievances through a nationwide protest. The inadequacies of our government brought about the protest. However, I have given up not on the possibility of a better Nigeria but I have given up on the act of complaining.

We all know how much energy the late legendary afro singer and human right activist , Fela Kuti , put into his music. He sang about the effect of corruption and bad governance. He sang for change , rebellion against police brutality and every issue that has caused Nigeria to remain in this pathetic state. Despite all he sang about, nothing has changed over the years…it only got worse. Why wouldn’t I give up on complaining ? Fela’s mother was killed by soldiers, that was his reward for singing against bad governance.

In Nigeria today , we have no freedom to express our grievances without getting arrested by policemen. Take a look at what is happening nationwide at the moment…many youths took to the streets of various states in the country to protest peacefully, yet so many got killed and brutalized by people who are meant to protect us , “The Nigerian Police Force”.

The sovereign of our past hero are typically wasted today, do you know why? Majority of our politicians are still corrupt. In this case, how do the situation of things change? The few who raise their voices to speak are mercilessly dealt with. This is our reality !

Lagos state governor finally speaks concerning END SARS after many casualties.

Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has released statements concerning the END SARS protest.

He stated the following;

I was at the venue of one of the #EndSARS protests today. The safety of everyone involved in peaceful protests across Lagos is important and communicating with the CP, this is what we want to guarantee on all sides.

Tomorrow, I will be meeting with HE Pres. @MBuhari in Abuja.

As a servant of the people, my job is to listen and do everything within my power to act while managing the nature of the problems our people are protesting against. I am proud of our youth and the courage they are displaying in articulating their grievances.

I identify wholeheartedly with the #EndSARS campaign as it touches the essence of democratic freedom.

Citizens must never be denied the right to protest and your voices have been heard.

A clear pronouncement has been made and Mr. President has addressed the nation. All SARS officers involved in the killing of innocent people and engaging in the abuse of human rights will be brought to justice.

My stand on #EndSARS is unmistakable and I assure you that I identify with this protest because your concerns are legitimate. The protest is in good faith but we have to be peaceful and decorous in expressing ourselves.

I have received the news of casualties at the Surulere protest as well as other developments we are monitoring. We mourn with the families of those who have lost their loved ones.

Please do not allow your protest be hijacked and used by people with a pre-existing vendetta.

We must prevent the escalation of issues and I am meeting with the Lagos CP and other security leaders in a few minutes to ensure that live rounds that could lead to further casualties are not used at all as the police looks to maintain peace during the protests.

I want to appeal to the protesters to take a break from protesting tomorrow. Tempers are at a highest on all sides at this time and while we work to prevent escalation, the safety of our residents is paramount.

I speak not just as a governor, but as a father, brother and son.

The “END SARS” movement has brought nothing but joy to me.- Ooni of Ife.

His imperial majesty , Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi has made his grievances about the police brutality in Nigeria known via his Twitter account.

He stated the following;

” The #ENDSARS movement has brought nothing but joy to me. Finally, the youths are awake, with one voice and a common goal.”

“I understand your plight, my 25 year old daughter had a nasty experience with SARS, almost losing her life.”

“On her way to the airport, she was stopped and terribly ransacked and surrounded by fully armed plain clothes policemen in a bus, detained for close to 30mins of thorough questioning.”

“Imagine a young female for that matter, all her belongings completely searched all because she was with a laptop on an official assignment from her office in lagos. I can only imagine the countless ones that have lost their lives from such ordeals, may their souls rest in peace.”

“I assure you that this is the beginning of greater things to come in Nigeria. I implore you to demand for more, but plead with you to do so in a peaceful manner, as anything outside of that will cause unnecessary havoc for all.”

“I have been informed of many innocent souls that were arrested and currently been detained, be rest assured that I am pursuing the matter and they will be set free.”

“To the men and women of the Nigerian police force, be assured that this movement is also for you, we know you are humans also and your reality is as a result of your environment.”

“This movements demands better on your behalf, and is aimed at pushing the government to do better for you and elevate your standard of living. Do not persecute your advocates.
God bless Nigerian youths and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. #ENDPOLICEBRUTALITY”

Budget 2021: Buhari, Osinbajo to spend N4 billion on food, cars, travels

While the government plans to spend big on presidential feeding and travels, it will spend less than N300 million to fight malaria in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo plan to spend N3.97 billion on food, cars, and travels in 2021, details of the proposed 2021 budget released by the Budget Office of the Federation show.

The breakdown of the proposed budget, which is awaiting the approval of the National Assembly, shows that the president has budgeted N2.4 billion for his local and international travels.

The figure is slightly lower (a difference of N1 million) than the amount he budgeted for travels in 2020.

Of the N2.4 billion, N1.65 billion is for the president’s international travels while the president’s local travels will cost N775 million.

Similarly, N98 million is budgeted for the president’s “foodstuff and catering supplies”, while N25 million was budgeted for refreshments and meals, the same as last year.

For the vice president, N801 million has been budgeted for travels for the year, the same amount budgeted for 2020.

Local travel will gulp N283 million while international travels get N517 million in 2021.

Similarly, for the vice president, N50 million was budgeted for foodstuff and catering materials and supplies, and N18 million for refreshments and meals.

The budget also shows that N436 million will be spent on purchasing motor vehicles for the State House.

An additional N116 million will be spent on tyres for bulletproof vehicles, plain cars, close circuit vehicles, platform trucks, jeeps, Hilux, ambulances and other utility and operational vehicles for the Presidency.

Misplaced priority

The huge amount the administration is planning for the convenience of the first and second families significantly outdo allocations to some critical projects of public health and interest.

As an example, despite Nigeria’s high malaria burden and mortality rate, the government’s total budget for the fight against the disease is below N300 million for the entire year.

Fifteen countries accounted for 80 per cent of all malaria cases globally in 2016, according to the World Health Organisation. Nigeria accounted for the highest proportion of cases globally (27%), followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (10%), India (6%) and Mozambique (4%).

In all, these are all of the government’s subheads for malaria, totalling N297 million.

  •  MOD malaria tuberculosis & HIV research programme ongoing – N30,889,953
  • Continuation of malaria vector control project: development of effective and long lasting herbal topical cream, indoor residual spray and outdoor larvicide/insecticide using non-pyrethroid plants and staff capacity building new — N25,316,366

  • Continuation of development of tea form (antermiasia annua + moringa and others) tablet and capsules (artimesia annua + moringa) herb-herb combination anti-malaria therapy new — N10,415,315
  • Malaria control: transcriptome profiling of mosquito response to sublethal doses of pyrethroid; phase 1 ongoing — N13,547,033
  • Enlightenment campaign to youth/women against HIV/AIDS, rollback malaria and cancer in the Niger Delta region ongoing — N30,000,000
  • Integrated vector management control of malaria; procurement of entomological materials for monitoring resistance in Ogun, Imo, Kaduna, Platea, Katsina, Anambra, Nasarawa, Bauchi And Delta States; coordination, monitoring and evaluation of malaria intervention activities new — N19,598,329
  • Procurement of MRDTS for rapid diagnosis kits for malaria, procurement of 5,000,000 doses of (sulphadoxine pyrimethamine) sp for treatment of pregnant women in malaria treatment and procurement of 4,000,000 doses of acts and distribution to health facilities new — N146,987,468

Basil Enwegbara, an economic analyst, said Nigeria is being run as an “economic no man’s land” where the rulers rule as outsiders, taking advantage of what they do not own.

“It doesn’t bother them the state of the economy, the poverty capital of the world, they should lead by example and stop living in the false world,” he said.

“They don’t sacrifice, they believe that as soon as they are in power, they must exploit and loot treasury because it is their turn.

“It is only in Nigeria people continue to budget year in year out for the same things they consume, must Nigeria be overfeeding the president and vice president? Must they travel in convoys of cars? If you go to places like Dubai, you see the ruler riding in two cars. He knows he is saving the money to develop his country and his people love him for his sacrifice.”

To avoid all frivolous spendings, he advised that the economy be decentralised by moving economic activities to the states with little or no revenue coming to the centre.

Okonjo-Iweala in Aso Rock, holds meeting with Buhari

Former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, is at the presidential villa, Abuja for a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

She came into the president’s office accompanied by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Zubair Dada.

Okonjo-Iweala is running to become the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and has already emerged as one of the final two candidates for the election.

President Buhari has since expressed his support and that of his administration to her effort to clinch the plump post.

Her visit to the presidential villa is apparently connected to the election.

Edo Assembly Speaker impeached

The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Frank Okiye, was on Monday morning impeached.

Okiye’s impeachment notice was signed by nine out of the 10-member Assembly.

Though details of what led to the impeachment are still sketches, Tribune Online gathered that Okiye would have been removed last week but for the last-minute intervention by Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The Edo Assembly, as it is presently constituted, is made up seven Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, embers and three All Progressive Congress, APC, members.

14 other members-elect stayed off the inauguration of the House on June 17, 2019, when Governor Obaseki issued the proclamation for the inauguration of the legislative arm.

While the 14 others had on August 6, 2020, inaugurated themselves in a private residence at Ugbor GRA, of the state capital, Benin, where they elected Victor Edoror as the speaker.

Okiye, it would be recalled, had week decamped to the PDP alongside six other members, while the remaining three members, who participated in the June 2019 inauguration remain in the APC.

IPPIS: ASUU reacts to FG’s order to stop payment of salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared that it will not be cowed into enrolling its members on the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

The union which was reacting to the directive issued by the Federal Government which seeks to stop the salaries of university employees, who have not enrolled on the scheme, described the move as blackmail to weaken workers and make them enroll on the platform.

Speaking in an interview with Punch on Sunday, the Chairman of the University of Port Harcourt Branch of ASUU, Dr Austen Sado, said that the directive by the government clearly shows that there is something the Federal Government is not telling the people.

He said “It (directive to stop salaries) clearly shows that there is something the Federal Government is not telling the people. They are not paying us (some lecturers). So, why are they saying by November?

“What they are doing now is just blackmail and threat to see how they would weaken our members to go and enroll (on IPPIS). People who have not enrolled are not being paid; some people for eight months, some for three, going to four months. I have not been paid salary since July, while some people have not been paid since February”.

Ondo election: Jegede reveals next step after losing to Gov Akeredolu

The spokesman of the Eyitayo Jegede campaign organisation, Gbenga Akinmoyo, has said that the team is waiting on God, after his principal was defeated in the Ondo Governorship election.

Akinmoyo stated this during an interview on Channels Television in Akure on Sunday.

“This project is a project that God has ordained. As it is so, we wait. So we wait on God,” he said.

On Sunday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the incumbent Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, as the winner of the poll.

Akeredolu won 15 out of 18 local governments, with Jegede winning the remaining three.

Akinmoyo thanked the people of the state for voting for their conscience during the polls and commended the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members for working hard for the party.

“For the benefit of the general public, we will like to thank all the Ondo State voters who went to the polls yesterday and voted for their conscience,” he added.

Ondo election: Why Jegede lost again – Ajulo

Former chairman of the board of Ondo State Radio-vision Corporation, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, on Sunday attributed the defeat of Mr. Eyitayo Jegede in Saturday’s governorship election to the face off between him and former Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

Jegede, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the election, served as a two-term attorney general and commissioner for Justice when Mimiko was governor for eight years.

The relationship between the two of them went sour when Mimiko anointed Jegede as his successor in 2016 but allegedly refused to back it up with funds, which led to his defeat.

Jegede also emerged as the candidate of the PDP in the 2020 governorship election but Mimiko, who has since dumped the party to form the Zenith Labour Party, pitched his tent with the incumbent Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, who contested on the platform of the ZLP.

Reacting to the outcome of the result in a statement on Sunday, Ajulo, who is an Abuja-based lawyer, said Jegede would have won if he had made peace with Mimiko to earn his support.

He said Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who won the election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, defeated other contestants because he made peace with the aggrieved members of his party before the election.

He said, “The Peoples Democratic Party would have had a better shot at winning if the party’s candidate had emulated the tactic of the APC’s candidate who stooped to conquer by making peace with all his old and new adversaries.

“I am disturbed that the PDP candidate failed to be on the same page with his former principal, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.

“This (development) unfortunately, helped Akeredolu, SAN fortunes as PDP went into the election with a cracked wall.

”Where are all state governors and national party leaders of the party? They even tried to beat up Ayodele Fayose during one of the campaign rallies.”

Rotimi Akeredolu has been declared winner of Ondo state governorship election.

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2020 Ondo State governorship election, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, has been declared winner of the poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

He defeated his closest rival and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Eyitayo Jegede, in 12 of the 18 Local Government Areas where the election held.

Akeredolu polled 292,830 votes as against Jegede’s 195,791 votes.

INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, who declared Akeredolu winner, said he had met all conditions required to be returned as governor-elect for the state.

Though Jegede won the first LG (Ifedore) result to be announced, Akeredolu maintained a comfortable lead after 16 of the 18 LGAs’ resultswere announced.

Jegede won in Akure South, Akure North, and Ifedore LGAs while the Deputy Governor and Zenith Labour Party candidate, Agboola Ajayi, won none.

EndSARS protests: Nigeria abolishes loathed federal special police unit

image captionSunday saw more protests, such as this one in Lagos

Nigeria has dissolved the special police force at the centre of protests against police brutality.

The government said a special presidential directive had ordered the immediate dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (Sars).

Protests against the squad were sparked by a video of a man allegedly being killed by police.

The demonstrations have intensified despite a crackdown and have spread outside the country.

All the officers in the Sars squad – widely accused of unlawful arrests, torture and murder – are to be redeployed, the presidency said, and a new arrangement to replace the squad is being worked on.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s chief of police said an a team of investigators – including civil society organisations and human rights bodies – would be set up to investigate alleged abuses by Sars.

President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier said he was determined to end police brutality, introduce reforms and bring “erring personnel… to justice”.

Protesters had demanded the unit be disbanded rather than reformed because previous commitments to change police behaviour had had no effect.

PRESIDENTIAL DIRECTIVE: The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force @PoliceNG has been dissolved WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT.

The Inspector General of Police will communicate further developments in this regard.— Presidency Nigeria (@NGRPresident) October 11, 2020

IGP disbands SARS nationwide.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has announced the decision to dissolve the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force.

He said the operatives will be redeployed to other police formations and commands.

Adamu announced this in a live broadcast on Sunday.

The announcement came after days of online and offline protests against the brutality and extra-judicial killings by SARS operatives nationwide.

At the briefing, the IGP said,

“The Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force otherwise known as SARS is hereby dissolved in all the 36 states police command and the Federal Capital Territory.”
