Military takes over Enugu airport, Okpara square over #ENDSARS protests

Military operatives on Wednesday took over the popular Okpara Square where #ENDSARS protesters gather every morning.

There was also heavy military presence at the entrance of Enugu airport over fear of possible attack.

The deployment followed blockage of Abakpa, Nike, Nike Lake and Liberty roads by protesters.

They also blocked NOWAS, Trans Ekulu and Emene areas in the metropolis.

Tyres were set on fire and used to block major roads.

These hampered movements and virtually shut down business activities in affected areas of the town.

The Abakpa market was shut down for most parts of the day just as timber market all in Abakpa area.

The situation caused fear in the area as residents and business owners scampered for safety.

At Emene, shop owners ran helter skelter in fear and closed shops in anticipation of the protesters who had also set up burnfire at some locations.

Business owners and banks around Ogui Road and Okpara Avenue among others closed for fear of being attacked.

#Endsars protest: We switched off Lekki Billboard on Sanwoolu’s Order” – LoatsAD media

Loatsad Promomedia has issued a statement clearing up rumours that it played a role in the attack on #EndSARS protesters at Lekki Tollgate on Tuesday evening.

The media company owned by Seyi Tinubu, son of Popular Lagos politician/APC national leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, disclosed that they shut down their billboard at the Lekki Toll gate based on an curfew order put in place by the state governor, Baba-jide Sanwoolu.

The statement read in full:

“When we started in 2014, we had a plan to change the perception of African start-ups in the global space. We believed as Africans, we could create something great and we set out with a N4m loan from a bank and we started trading, going from door to door begging for work and relentlessly grew the business employing and empowering over 200 Nigerians today directly or indirectly. We have supported many upcoming businesses, artists, people in need as giving back to our community has always been our passion (all this can be verified).”

“All of our achievements thus far have come the from hard work, sweat and determination of our work force and everything Loatsad has been doing has been open, all taxes are remitted and payments to agencies and regulatory bodies have been timely, so we can be proud to say we are contributing the growth of the industry and Nation.”

“When the “EndSars” and “say no to police brutality” protests started from day one we wholly supported the movement and used all our platforms to promote the messages (I believe the promoters can verify this information) as we believed in the cause.”

“On Tuesday when the curfew was announced we heeded the governors warnings and didn’t want our staff in any danger, hence by 3pm our staff had been ordered to leave the site and the board was switched off based on the governors curfew request.

“We had no idea what was going to happen and we feel the same anguish, pain and shock at the events that unfolded and our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and families of this ungodly act.We believe in this movement and that it was the start of the change our generation needed to move our country forward and we will continue to support the youths of this great nation.”

India, Nigeria Sign Pact On Cooperation In Exploration Of Outer Space

The MoU has been signed between Indian Space Research Organisation (at Bengaluru in June 2020) and the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) of Nigeria at Abuja (in August 2020)

New Delhi:

The Union Cabinet was on Wednesday apprised of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between India and Nigeria on cooperation in the exploration and uses of outer space for peaceful purposes.

The MoU has been signed between Indian Space Research Organisation (at Bengaluru in June 2020) and the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) of Nigeria at Abuja (in August 2020)

An official release said that the MoU will lead to setting up a joint working group, drawing members from Department of Space (DOS)/ISRO and National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) of Nigeria, which will further work out the plan of action including the time-frame and the means of implementation.

The release said India and Nigeria have been trying to have formal space cooperation for more than a decade.

It said that with the initiatives from the Indian High Commission to Nigeria, a draft inter-Governmental MoU for space cooperation was shared with Nigerian authorities through the Ministry of External Affairs.

“After a few iterations through diplomatic channels, both sides have arrived at a workable draft of the MoU and the same was processed for internal approvals. Though the approvals for signing the MoU was obtained in time, appropriate opportunities/occasions for the signing of this MoU have not arisen due to cancellation of a few visits in late 2019 and early 2020 and the subsequent COVID-19 pandemic situation,” the release said.

End SARS: Tinubu slams Army for using live bullets on protesters, deny owning Lekki Toll Gate

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, has denied being part of the shooting at the Lekki Toll Gate on Tuesday night.

Dozens of End SARS protesters were killed and many left critically injured, after men believed to be officers of the Nigerian Army, opened fire at them.

In a telephone interview with Channels Television on Wednesday morning, Tinubu insisted he will never be part of any carnage.

The former Governor of the state also condemned the action of the Army, saying, “Why will they use live bullets?

“I will never, never be part of any carnage. I will never be part of that.”

Tinubu also denied having any investment in the Lekki Concession Company (LCC), the firm which manages the tollgate.

“I have no dime, no kobo investment in the tollgate,” he said.

PDP Kicks against Attack on Lekki Protesters

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), yesterday condemned in very strong terms, the killing of peaceful protesters at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos as well as other parts of the country.

In statement issued last night by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP said that “it is shocking that security agents and, in some cases, thugs, were reportedly deployed to end the lives of promising Nigerians. This, to say the least, is saddening”.

The PDP further said that “those responsible for the heinous murder of the innocent and harmless Nigerians must account for their nefarious acts”.

The PDP called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately direct an end to these wanton killings across the country.

The PDP also invited the International Criminal Court (ICC), to bring all those responsible for the needless deaths of these very young Nigerians to justice.

Sanwo-Olu blames forces beyond ‘direct control’ for Lekki killings

Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu Wednesday morning blamed “forces beyond our direct control” for the death of peaceful, unarmed protesters at Lekki toll plaza on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses said Nigerian soldiers opened fire on the protesters who were sitting on the ground, waving the Nigerian flag and singing the country’s anthem.

The unprovoked attack on the protesters happened more than two hours before the 24-hour curfew declared by the state governor became effective.

“This is the toughest night of our lives as forces beyond our direct control have moved to make dark notes in our history, but we will face it and come out stronger,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor said 27 persons were still receiving at three hospitals. Two of them are currently receiving intensive medical care. Three other persons have been discharged.

Eyewitnesses said the soldiers initially denied ambulances entry into the area to evacuate those who were shot.

Amnesty International Nigeria blamed the Nigerian authorities for the death of the protesters, noting that there was no justification for the killings.

“The Nigerian military has a poor human rights record in dealing with protesters,” Amnesty said a day before the Lekki attack.

Shortly after the attack on protesters began, the power supply at the toll plaza was cut off and the area thrown into darkness.

A Nigerian disc jockey DJ Switch broadcast chaotic scenes live on her Instagram account. At a point, some people were seen trying to remove a bullet from the leg of a protester referred to as Jide.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Nigerian police boss said he has ordered the deployment of anti-riot policemen all over the country.

“The force will henceforth exercise the full powers of the law to prevent any further attempt on lives and property of citizens,” a police statement said.

Despite his veiled reference to forces beyond his control – in Nigeria, a state governor does not have direct control even over the police – Sanwo-Olu said the state would work with the Nigerian Government to get to the root of the “unfortunate incident”.

Nigerian Protesters Paralyze Lagos, Gov’t Imposes Curfew

As the lockdown went into force in Africa’s largest city at 4 pm (1500 GMT), hundreds of defiant protesters sang the national anthem as they pledged to remain out on the streets, AFP reported.

“Are you afraid?” a man shouted to the flag-waving crowd from a stage at a tollgate in the city center that has become the epicenter of the demonstrations.

“We will stay here peacefully,” 32-year-old demonstrator Akin told AFP, adding that “this is our new home”.

The government initially announced it would impose a 24-hour curfew in Lagos. A spokesman for the city later clarified to AFP that it was indefinite and around the clock.

By early evening, silence fell on large parts of the usually bustling city, shops were closed, and cars had gone.

Protests that began 12 days ago over abuses by the police’s loathed Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) have spiraled dramatically, with violence being reported in several cities.

Lagos state governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered the shutdown after he noted the protests had “degenerated into a monster that is threatening the well-being of our society”.

“Lives and limbs have been lost as criminals and miscreants are now hiding under the umbrella of these protests to unleash mayhem,” he wrote on Twitter, insisting that only essential workers should stay out on the streets.

“We will not watch and allow anarchy in our dear state,” he added.

As the tone hardened from the authorities, Nigeria’s police chief ordered anti-riot units deployed around the country.

“The force will henceforth exercise the full powers of the law to prevent any further attempt on lives and property of citizens,” a statement read.

Some 18 people have died in the demonstrations as clashes have been reported between protesters and assailants wearing civilian clothes.

Rights groups and protesters have accused “thugs and sponsored hoodlums” of attacking the peaceful demonstrations and seeking to discredit the movement.

Lagos, a city of 20 million, has been paralyzed as crowds have blocked key roads and access to the international airport.

An AFP journalist saw young men manning makeshift checkpoints and stopping cars on routes across the city early Tuesday.

Witnesses told AFP that a police station was set ablaze in the Orile Iganmu district of the city on Tuesday. They said police opened fire on protesters, wounding several.

In the capital, Abuja, security forces violently dispersed crowds and thick black smoke could be seen over the city, an AFP photographer added.

Tensions were high after police reported that three people had been killed in clashes in the city on Monday.

Violence spread as well to the largest Northern city of Kano as hundreds of people went on a rampage on Tuesday, burning vehicles and looting businesses, according to an AFP reporter at the scene.

“The mob came near the school and began assaulting parents who had come to pick up their children,” 35-year old auto mechanic Sadiq Mohammed told AFP.

Police announced that 12 suspects were also arrested in Southern Benin City in connection with separate attacks on two police facilities.

The wave of protests in Nigeria has rattled the authorities as the biggest show of people power in years has turned into demands from youths for sweeping changes.

The government announced the scrapping of the SARS unit and a raft of reforms over a week ago, but the bid to placate the protesters has failed.

Officials have called for the demonstrations to be suspended to give the authorities time to make good on its pledges.

Nigeria, where the median age is 18, is a tinderbox of profound economic and social grievances.

Around half of the population of 200 million is estimated to live in extreme poverty and unemployment is widespread among the youth.

Africa’s biggest oil producer is currently facing a recession as the fall in crude prices sparked by the coronavirus pandemic has battered government finances.

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce announced in a statement that estimated economic losses in the past 12 days were at 700 billion naira (USD 1.8 billion dollars, 1.5 billion euros).

On Tuesday, the Senate called on President Muhammadu Buhari to address the nation on the protests “as a matter of urgency”.

“The upper chamber urged the Federal Government to faithfully implement all the five demands of the #EndSARS movement and protesters with necessary timelines to rekindle confidence in government,” lawmakers stated in a statement.

Soldiers deployed to Lekki Tollgate in Lagos night Tuesday night shot and killed several peaceful young protesters and injured many others.

Biden’s statement read: “I urge President Buhari and the Nigerian military to cease the violent crackdown on protesters in Nigeria, which has already resulted in several deaths. My heart goes out to all those who have lost a loved one in the violence. The United States must stand with Nigerians who are peacefully demonstrating for police reform and seeking an end to corruption in their democracy. I encourage the government to engage in a good-faith dialogue with civil society to address these long-standing grievances and work together for a more just and inclusive Nigeria.”

The soldier was identified as Lance Corporal Harrisson Friday,

“The hooded soldier hiding behind the mask to commit cybercrime has been apprehended in the ongoing cyber operations in support of Crocodile Smile VI,” the Army said.

The arrest comes days after the Army commenced its Crocodile Smile exercise, a “yearly event set out to train NA officers and soldiers in its efforts to ensuring the safety and security of Nigeria and her citizens.”

#EndSARS: Buhari meets with Defense Minister, CDS

President Muhammadu Buhari has just ended a closed-door meeting with the Minister of Defense, Major General Bashir Magashi, and the Chief of Defense Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, at the State House.

Although there was no official information confirming the agenda of the meeting, as at the time of filing this report, sources within the State House, suggested it was all in the bid to tame the escalating violence trailing the #EndSARS protests.

It should be noted that the protests had in the last two days degenerated into bloody violence in different parts of the country, leaving tens dead and property worth millions of naira destroyed.

Although government at all levels had been taking steps to meet the initial five-point demand of the protesters, the actions have refused to be doused, generating new demands daily.

Falz blast Lagos state government.

As the end sars protests had been peaceful until recently , hoodlums have taken over the protest. They has been alot of violence and killings.

According to Falz, the hoodlums are suspected to be sponsored by some unscrupulous people in government. This however led to the 24hour curfew that was imposed by the Lagos state government , starting from today.

However, the talented singer and rapper has said that the peaceful protect will definitely continue once the curfew is over.

Watch the video below to listen to what Falz said concerning the recent development.

Curfew will trigger more protests, Lagos PDP tells Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has faulted the declaration of curfew in the state.

The spokesman for the Lagos PDP, Gani Taofeeq, in a statement on Tuesday, warned that curfew will trigger more protests in the state.

The statement was titled, ‘Curfew declaration: confrontational, ill-advised’.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, earlier announced a 24-hour curfew in the state to curb violence arising from protests against police brutality and bad governance in the country.

The statement noted that “the PDP opines that the decision is confrontational, ill-advised and capable of inflaming the already compressed ‘beast’ in the peaceful demonstrators against Police brutality and other government induced vices in the state.

“The governor must consequently take responsibility for any degeneration into maiming, killing, and oppressive arrest.

“The governor has again showed that “he acts copy and paste in governance, otherwise, the peculiarities of ancillary issues of agitations in the state are such that the governor only needs to act immediately rather than declaring curfew apparently because one or two governors did same.”

“The governor should simply have gone ahead to announce welfare supports for the Police command officers; declare the account of the LSSTF; stop toll collections in the state; announce at least 50 per cent tuition fees reduction in all state government schools; scrap or reduce by at least 50 per cent charges of Alpha Beta; discount by at least 40 per cent Lagos housing; reduce by at least 50 per cent cost of all state-owned transportation within the state; reduction of his emoluments and that of the House members to mention a few.

“if governor Sanwo-Olu does these in 48 hours, these protesters will calm down.”

#EndSARS: IG Orders Nationwide Deployment of Anti-Riot Police

Following the #EndSARS protests spreading across the country, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered immediate nationwide deployment of anti-riot police unit, the Police Mobile Force (PMF) , to protect lives and property of all Nigerians and secure critical national infrastructure across the country.

The IGP has also ordered massive deployment of Police operatives to strengthen security around Correctional facilities nationwide.

A statement issued by Force PRO and Deputy Commisioner of Police (DCP), Frank Mba, said the order was coming on the heels of increasing attacks, including acts of arson and malicious damage to public and private facilities as recorded in some States of the Federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The statement said the Commissioners of Police in the 36 States of the Federation and the FCT were “to identify and isolate law-breakers from peaceful protesters; immediately arrest and diligently prosecute such perpetrators of violence in their respective Commands”.

The IG said 12 suspects were arrested in connection with the attacks and arson on Police Stations in Benin, Edo State while five AK47 rifles earlier stolen from vandalised police stations were recovered.

Akeredolu plotting to forge my signature, Deputy alleges

Ondo Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, has raised the alarm over a plot by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to forge his signature on a prepared resignation letter.

Ajayi said he has no plans to resign from office.

Some close associates of Ajayi had hinted last weekend he was being pressured to honorably resign from office.

Ajayi, who spoke through his Media Adviser, Allen Sowore, said he was elected alongside Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, and the four- year mandate will not end until 23rd February 2021.

He stated news about his impending resignation was sponsored by Akeredolu as a subterfuge in preparation for a macabre plan to forge his signature.

The Ondo Deputy Governor urged the general public to be wary of the latest antics and desperation of Governor Akeredolu to remove him by all means and at any cost illegally.

According to him: “The people of Ondo State, who voted for Agboola Ajayi as Deputy Governor in 2016 have not ask him to resign or quit the government.

“Therefore, he has no reason whatsoever to relinquish the people’s mandate, which of course is limited by term/time, democratically bestowed upon him.”

But Akeredolu, who reacted through his Special Assistant New Media, Richard Olatunde, said the signature of Ajayi was too insignificant to be forged.

He said he would rather deepen concern as regards efforts to confront the current national issue of youth protests.

“All the same, one does not accept anything less from a thoroughly beaten and politically minimized egocentric being.

“This is not the first time he would unveil untruths not only about others but about himself too. Forgery cannot, and has never been part of this Government.

“Those whose identities are shrouded in such are already a distance away from the Government led by Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN. They know themselves.

“His signature is too insignificant now, and even beyond today, to be forged. It’s not in the character of Mr. Governor or anyone in the Government he heads.”

The Senate is currently in an emergency closed session over the ongoing #endsars protest nationwide.

The Senate is currently holding an emergency closed session apparently to appraise the current #EndSARS protests rocking various parts of the country.

No sooner had the senators resumed for the day’s plenary around 10:55am on Tuesday…the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, called for an emergency session.

Apart from the issue of #EndSARS protests which the senators are discussing, our correspondent learnt that the issue of the confirmation of Aisha Dahir-Umar, as the substantive Director General of the National Pension Commission.

The Committee on Establishment and Public Service led by Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, had last  Thursday screened and cleared Dahir-Umar and other nominees for the board of PenCom.

Aggrieved senators who are spearheading the campaign against the confirmation of Dahir-Umar, are said to be poised for a showdown at today’s plenary, which obviously necessitated part of the reasons for the closed session.

Lagos state governor has imposed a 24hour curfew.

The Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has imposed a 24hour curfew on all parts of Lagos state. He made this known via his Twitter account earlier today. Below are the his statements;

Dear Lagosians,

I have watched with shock how what began as a peaceful #EndSARS protest has degenerated into a monster that is threatening the well-being of our society. Lives and limbs have been lost as criminals and miscreants are now hiding under the umbrella

… of these protests to unleash mayhem on our state. As a government that is alive to its responsibility and has shown a commitment to the movement #ENDSARS, we will not watch and allow anarchy in our dear state.

I, therefore, hereby impose a 24-hour curfew on all parts of the State as from 4pm today, 20th October,2020. Nobody, except essential service providers and first responders must be found on the streets.

Northern Group Suspends Protests over Insecurity

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has suspended its #EndInsecurityNow protest across northern states.

In a statement issued yesterday, the spokesman of the group, Abdulhazeez Suleiman, said the CNG was disturbed.

By the happenings across the country, especially the “raiding of Benin Central Prison, Edo State, leading to the escape of inmates all in the name of #EndSARS protest.”

The statement said while the coalition has no quarrel with people expressing their grievances by holding peaceful protest, “we, however, find it disturbing that protests want to degenerate into lawlessness and brigandage.

“Consequent upon this, the CNG categorically states that it will neither associate with, or identify with, nor recognise any movement by any persons, groups or from whichever section or class in the country that portends greater danger to the country or tends to tilt towards anarchy.”

It stated further that: “In this light, we condemn with all our might, the actions of those who perpetrate criminal acts in the guise of protests anywhere in Nigeria, and strongly denounce those who instigate others to commit acts of violence and lawlessness under whatever pretext.

“We thus emphatically repudiate the reported raid of the Benin prison facility, and deem any further act of brigandage on the public and public assets not only immoral and illegal but also condemnable and abhorrent to the country’s sensibilities and ordinary decency.”

Suleiman said: “The CNG hereby impresses on all its formations on the #EndInsecurityNow protests across the 19 northern states to desist from identifying with the protests, and shun any act that may further cause additional instability in the region and potentially affects the general peace of the country.

“We urge them to remain decent, orderly and civilized as they peacefully press for action to end the bleeding in the North without molesting or oppressing fellow citizens and provoking public disorder.

“The #EndInsecurityNow protests in the northern states must not be seen to cause public fear through traffic disruptions, rampage on private and public assets or involved with provocative utterances, altercations and other forms of indecent conduct.

“With this development, the CNG hereby directs all its state chapters to immediately stay further action and suspend all protests forthwith effectively from October 20, 2020.”
