Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has asked Nigerian youths to make it uncomfortable for old leaders to remain in government.
Speaking during a virtual interview with academic and historian Toyin Falola, the former President admitted his generation did a lot of wrong and also apologized to the youths. Obasanjo who noted that things are bad in the country, said Nigeria’s fortune might change when youths step up.
He said; “You (youths) have everything going for you and I don’t want you to feel discouraged. Things are bad in Nigeria but I believe it is only for a short while because it depends on you. Whatever my generation might have done wrong and I will be the first to admit that my generation has done a lot of wrong, (but) it is for your generation to do it better.

Don’t just sit down and complain. Sitting down and complaining will make you be on the same level and you have to get what I called critical mass of likeminded people who will be ready to say let us bring about the change.
You can bring about the change if you get critical mass of people that are ready to slug it out. When people say when will these old hags go out of the way? I tell them they won’t go out of the way, you have to make them go out of the way. They won’t voluntarily go out of the way, you have to make it uncomfortable for them; I am not talking of violence but bringing pressure to bear to make it uncomfortable for them to go out of the way.”
The new service chiefs appointment by the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have arrived Maiduguri, the Borno State capital to meet with critical stakeholders to brainstorm on how to tackle insurgency in the theatre of war.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Leo Irabor led the delegation to arrive at the headquarters of Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole in Maiduguri on Sunday afternoon at about 1330 hours.
They include the Chief of Defence Staff, Maj. General Leo Irabor; Chief of Army Staff, Maj. General Ibrahim Attahiru; Chief of Naval Staff, AVM Awwal Gambo and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao.

The member representing Isikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives, Hon Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has boasted that her party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), will soon take over the entire South-East region with the ruling party set to begin its nationwide re-registration drive.
Onyejeocha who spoke on Saturday when she hosted a delegation of Ndi Igbo elders from Amaibo Oguduasa community in Isuikwuato local government area, said with the APC in power, the people would see more developments coming their way.
While urging the elders to take the APC message to their different wards and urge their people to register en masse, the lawmaker said:
‘In the APC, we are in a hurry to develop Abia North. We are determined to take over Abia State and the entire South-East, and we are committed to transforming Nigeria.
“You should take this APC message to our people in the villages; they should seize the opportunity of the new registration and re-registration exercise created by APC to become members of our great party so that we can get more dividends of democracy from the central.
“Abian should register en masse in APC because that is where the light for Ndi Igbo is.
“In Abia State, we only have two political parties, the APC and others. We have tested other parties in this country and we have never had it this rosy”, she declared.

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to Governors in the South East, to ban open grazing in the region.
Kanu issued the notice through IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful. He warned that the group’s security outfit would commence the enforcement of the Anti-Grazing Law across the entire region, if no action was taken at the expiration of the ultimatum.
Kanu further commended Governors in the Southwest for banning open grazing in their region.
“We wish to humbly and most submissively call upon all the governors of the East, to as a matter of urgency, ban all manner of open grazing in the region in compliance with the 1969 statutory law of #Nigeria that banned such provocative and primitive practice by Fulani herdsmen” the statement read.

It added that “If after 14 days there is no firm and decisive action by Eastern governors to ban open grazing in our land, #ESN will step into the breach to commence the enforcement of this 1969 Anti-Grazing Law across the entire region. Don’t say you were not informed or given prior warning.”
The South-West governors banned all open grazing of cattle in the region earlier this week. They also prohibited night grazing and herding of cattle by underage children.
President Muhamnadu Buhari on Saturday revalidated his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in his constituency in Daura, Katsina State.
President Buhari, who was accompanied by APC Caretaker Committee members, Senate President (Ahmad Lawan), Governors and other party members at the exercise declared that the era of endorsing people from Abuja was over.
He said that his objective was to ensure that the party was returned to the people at the grassroots by starting from bottom up from polling unit to ward to the local government to the state and then to the federal.
According to him, “No more crowning from Abuja downward. Let the people know this and appreciate it that they are in charge of their constituencies and they are in charge of the party. Without any incentive they must come out and defend the party at any level so that we, you and the party will feel secure and comfortable because the old time of putting hands in the pocket is over because the money is no longer available”.

I was contrived to tell Nigerians that between 1999 and 2014, let them check with the NNPC, let them check with the governor of Central Bank, production was 2.4 million barrels per day and the average cost was $100 per barrel.
“So for a year’s daily production, Nigeria would earn having 2.4×100 dollars everyday…but look at the condition of infrastructure, you know this better than I do.
“I know I went to every local government of the country in my three consecutive attempts to become the President. You know the road more than I do. You know the condition of the rail, the railway is dead. Now look at it everywhere we go, what did they do with all these monies?
“When we took over the administration, production went down to about half a million barrels per day, the price collapsed. We had to do what is called a bailout, wherever we got the money from. Upon all the money from 1999 to 2014 we gave out money from the Centre to pay salaries.
“No, Nigerian elites are not interested in rating the competence but they are interested in harassing us with all efforts we are making.”
“You, who are in the field in charge of your constituencies, you have to make efforts to convince the elites to please give us the due relevance and respect we deserve that we are working so hard with limited resources.”
Buhari thanked the Senate President and the governors for accompanying him down to his constituency to register as the President and member of the party. He described their coming as a morale booster.
The President also thanked the Caretaker committee chairman of the party, Mai Mala Buni for shouldering the responsibilities of the APC. He described him as the most suitable person for the leadership position having been Secretary to the party for such a long time before becoming the Yobe state governor.
According to him, the Yobe state governor knows the details of the party more than him by virtue of his long service as the Secretary.
President Buhari also thanked Buni for contacting all stakeholders and discussing with them our problems.
In his remarks, the APC Caretaker Chairman and Yobe state governor, Buni said the exercise was in line with the directive given to them by President Buhari.
He said: “In line with the mandate given to us by the National Executive Committee of our great party under your leadership, it is to review this party bottom up. In line with that we started with reconciling some aggrieved members of our party across the country and then we started the process of this registration by printing of materials to ensure that the materials are being distributed across the country.
“We set up a mobilization committee under the chairmanship of the governor of Kogi state, Alhaji Yahaya Bello and also a National Registration Committee under His Excellency, the governor of Niger state and both committees have been functioning effectively and living up to their expectations.”
He said the party was proud of President Buhari’s achievement. Buni said: “Your Excellency, we are proud of you. We are very proud. When you came as the Head of State in 1983, Nigeria was bedeviled with a lot of crises. Crises of the economy, the Maitasine started in Kano, Maduguri, Gombe, Jimeta and other town and villages.
“When you took over, you dealt with Maitasine and you improved the economy. Those of us then in the secondary schools could remember. Secondary schools were closed because there was no feeding of students talkless of payment of salaries.
” You improved the economy within no time; the war against indiscipline was tremendously carried to ensure that the people were back to farm and become self sustaining because that was the only quick way to economic recovery.
“So also when Allah brought you back in 2015 as the President, you inherited the Boko Haram that consumed a lot of states especially the North-east and particularly Borno/Yobe, where I came from, the two epicenter of the Boko Haram insurgency.
Like the Maitasine of the 83 also and you also, inherited a bad economy…but when you came, we have relative peace. Most of the local governments, because in Yobe I can remember that about five local governments were under Boko Haram and even the rest, the people have deserted the local governments.
“No secretariat of the local governments was functioning but today, our people have been settled and we have stopped counting the number of bombs that explode on daily basis. Thank so very much your Excellency, you have done us proud. We are proud of your achievements.
“This is the beginning of the registration and to us as a caretaker committee, as a party, we have started feeling that we have already succeeded.”
There is renewed tension in the Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State following the alleged takeover of two villages by some herdsmen.
The two villages, Kajola and Gbagba Idere are located in the Ayete Local Government Area of the state.
Residents of Ayete told our correspondent that a Fulani herdsman, Iskilu Wakil, was asked to leave the villages because he did not buy the land he was occupying.
This was said to have infuriated the herder, who claimed he was a combatant with arms and ammunition.
The Asawo of Ayete, Oba Emmanuel Okeniyi, said those who have farms in the villages had fled the places over fear they might be attacked by Wakil.
Oba Okeniyi said, “They asked him to leave the area. I don’t think he bought the land from anybody and the owners of the land asked him to leave. Rather than leaving, he has become a terror. The Fulani herders there usually destroy their farms.
“The farmers in the villages have fled their places, they are just loafing about now. Government has deployed Amotekun personnel in Ayete. They came yesterday ( Friday) but I haven’t heard that they have gone to those villages”
The government of Kwara State has assured residents of their safety and security amid the influx of herdsmen into the State.
This was contained in a statement issued on Saturday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Professor Mamman Sabbah Jibril.
He said that government has put in place measures to prevent any crisis between host communities and herders in the state.
Jibril also added that the leadership of Miyetti Allah has also committed to disallow night grazing or cattle grazing by underage persons in the State.
The statement issued by Jibril reads thus; “In the light of some unfortunate developments in some neighbouring states, we urge our people not to entertain any fear as proactive measures have been taken and are being taken to maintain peace and ensure security of lives and property of every resident.
“The government is working with all security agencies, Directors of Personnel Management (DPMs) of local governments and the leadership of Miyetti Allah to strengthen the existing peace between various economic interests,” the statement added.
It said, “At the instance of His Excellency, the Governor of Kwara State, the office of the SSG has held briefings with various stakeholders across the state on the need to ensure that all hands are on deck to protect lives and property.
“The leadership of Miyetti Allah has also committed to disallow night grazing or cattle grazing by underage persons.
“Assisted by the security agencies, the DPMs across the 16 local government areas have been directed to work with local communities and legitimate herders to keep the peace,” it concluded.
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, vowed on Saturday he would not leave behind any uncompleted project for his successor.
The governor, according to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Kelvin Ebiri, stated this at a reception organized in honour of the former governor of the state, Celestine Omehia, who was conferred with special chieftaincy title of Eze Gbuwara Uzor 1 of Ikwerre at Isiopko town, Ikwerre local government area of the state.
Wike assured the people of the state that works would begin on the Trans-Kalabari Road soon.
According to him, the project will ease the transportation difficulties experienced by the people of Kalabari.
The governor said he was determined to make the people of Rivers happier than he met them when he assumed office in 2015.
Wike said: “I and the Deputy Governor, together with the Chairman of the Rivers State Elders Council, have agreed on how the Trans-Kalabari Road will follow.
“Those who said we don’t want to do anything in the Kalabari area, today they are sending me text messages. They are thanking me and I said to them don’t thank me because their thanking me is temporary. They are not always stable.
“So many people have said that I am discriminating in terms of projects. Now, when they saw us go to the various Local Governments to commission projects, they don’t say anything again. By February 10th, 2021, we will start another round of project inauguration.
“When we were doing Sakpeenwa -Bori (Ogoni) Road, some politicians in our party were carrying propaganda. They were saying that we are not going to finish that road.
“But, they now have one of the best roads in the state. Some of them were even ashamed to watch it on television. We have also agreed that from Sakpeenwa to Bori, we are awarding a fresh contract to take it to Kono town. Which government has done that to anybody or town?
“I have also told Isiopko people, don’t be impatient, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc is already taking measurement and we will link you up to Isiodu town.
“No one project awarded by us will be left abandoned. I won’t leave any uncompleted project for my successor. I will leave office as a proud Ikwerre son who will feel satisfied that I made the people happy when I was governor.”
Wike will complete his eight-year rule in Rivers in 2023.
President Muhammadu Buhari said on Saturday said his administration’s balance sheet is open for scrutiny by the National Assembly and Nigerians.
The president, according to a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, stated this during a chat with journalists after he revalidated his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Katsina, Daura.
Buhari was accompanied by the registration centre by the Chairman of APC Caretaker Committee, Mai Buni; members of the committee; Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, state governors, and other party members.
He said his administration has nothing to hide on the management of the country’s finances.
President Buhari assured Nigerians of full and transparent implementation of the 2021 budget.
He also commended the National Assembly for the effective and detailed attention accorded the budget before its passage.
The president stressed that the budget aptly captured some of the visions of the administration, saying all efforts will be deployed by the government to ensure its effective implementation.
Buhari said: “We have directed all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies to follow what is in the budget so that we can get the National Assembly to easily support the next budget. We can tell them what we have received, and how it was spent.
“We are always ready to make the balance sheet available for all Nigerians and the National Assembly. We have nothing to hide.’’
Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has addressed those who are against the formation of the Eastern Security Network (IPOB), as he blast them saying they should receive sense.
The Eastern Security Network (ESN) is a regional security force of the indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB), based in the Igbo part of Nigeria.

Security agencies in Kaduna State have been given matching orders to fish out hoodlums who destroyed a pavilion belonging to the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) in the Zango Kataf Local Government Area of the state.
The state Governor, Nasir el-Rufai gave the directive in a statement on Friday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan.
el-Rufai, according to the statement, condemned the destruction of the pavilion, which was set up by the church specifically for a conference.
The statement reads: “The Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai has condemned the burning of a pavilion arranged for a church conference in Zangon Kataf Local Government.
“The Government of Kaduna state received security reports detailing the incident, which stated that a pavilion erected by the leadership of the ECWA Church ahead of its conference was set ablaze by unknown persons at a location near the Palace of the Agwatyap.
“The Governor who frowned at the incident directed security agencies to carry out diligent investigation towards identifying and punishing the culprits.
“Investigations into the incident are in progress.”
Forensic experts hired by the Lagos State government to investigate the shooting of youths by soldiers at the Lekki Toll Gate during the #EndSARS protest in October 2020, have been given four days to submit their report to the Judicial Panel of Inquiry probing the killing of protesters by soldiers.
The order was given by the panel headed by Justice Doris Okuwobi on Friday with the expiry date being Tuesday, February 2.
The forensic experts were specifically hired to examine the incident scene to ascertain if soldiers actually used live bullets on protesting youths following claims by the Army authorities that its men only fired blank bullets.
The experts were also mandated to search for evidence of live bullets or shells as well as blood of gunshot victims at the tollgate.
They were expected to submit their report on Friday after the 21 days given to them to conclude the job elapsed on Wednesday but they failed to deliver on their promise.
At the panel sitting on Friday, Okuwobi turned down an application by operators of the toll gate, the Lekki Concession Company, to take possession of the facility as it has been losing revenue since it was shut down.
Okuwobi said that until the report of the forensic examination is completed and handed over to the panel, the LCC could not have access to the facility.
“It behoves the panel to await the forensic report before taking further steps with regard to the application of the LCC for repossession of the Lekki Toll Plaza,” the panel chairman said.

Five Killed, Houses Burnt As Hoodlums Clash With Amotekun In Ibadan.
On Thursday night, over 200 houses were razed while hoodlums killed a young man in the area.
Five youths who were keeping vigil in the Labiran area of Ibadan were shot dead during a clash between the operatives of the Oyo State Security network, codenamed Amotekun, and hoodlums on Friday evening, SaharaReporters has gathered.
Labiran has been troubled by some hoodlums in the last few days, necessitating youths to keep vigil to avert robbery.
On Thursday night, over 200 houses were razed while hoodlums killed a young man in the area.
One of the youths in the area, who simply identified himself as Wale, said following the burning and looting of properties in the area, elders in the community invited youth to stay awake to avert a recurrence.
“It is true; they killed four of our friends. Their families have taken them for burial this morning. Our fathers invited us to keep vigil. When we heard that those miscreants were coming, one of our brothers invited the operatives of Amotekun to help us.
“On arrival, they started shooting sporadically while hoodlums were also shooting. As a result, Monsuru, Ridwan and two other people were killed.
“They have taken their corpses for burial. Those hoodlums later came back to our area around 5 am. As we speak, they are burning houses again. Smoke is everywhere. Many have fled our area now. We need help,” he said.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday fixed February 5 for the by-election primaries in Kafin Hausa Federal Constituency of Jigawa State.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will hold the by-election in the constituency on March 6.
The APC Director of Organistion, Prof. Al-Mustapha Medaner, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.
He said sales of forms for the election will begin at the party’s national secretariat on January 30 and ends on February 1 while the screening of aspirants takes place on February 2.
He said the Expression of Interest and nomination forms for the election would cost N850,000, adding that female aspirants and the physically challenged would pay 50 percent of the prescribed amount.
Medaner said: “The publication of claims and objections takes place on February 3 while the screening begins on February 4.
“Hearing of matters relating to the primary election holds on February 7.”
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, on Friday met with the leadership of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) on the challenges confronting herdsmen in the country
In his address at the meeting held in Abuja, the Sultan expressed concern that many Nigerians have continued to associate Fulani herdsmen with crimes in the country.
He added that not all the crimes committed in the country were perpetrated by the herdsmen.
He urged the leadership of MACBAN to find a workable solution to security and socio-economic challenges faced by members of the association and urged them to shun any act that would tarnish their reputations.
The National Secretary of the association, Baba Ngelzarma, urged the Federal Government to come up with social support programmes for herdsmen and train them in other skills in addition to cattle rearing.
He said: “Even the cattle rearing are they getting money? Their cattle are not competing with the ones you have in other parts of the world that weigh 700 to 800 kilograms.
“The milk output is also not competing with the ones we have in other parts of the world where one single cow gives an output of 50 litres per day.
“We still hold the outdated species of cow that are weighing between 100 and 120 kilograms and given out an output of milk that is not more than three to five litres per day.”
Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has advocated for a six-month deadline for political parties to submit the list of their candidates for elections in the country.
Yakubu made this suggestion during a retreat of the National Assembly’s Joint Committee on INEC and Electoral Matters in Abuja on Friday, January 29.
Ripples Nigeria gathered that the retreat was part of activities geared toward amending Nigeria’s Electoral Act 2010.
Yakubu said that if the proposed provision scaled through, it would help the commission to prepare better for elections.
“One of the provisions that actually excites me a lot is it will help the commission if there is certainty in the way we prepare for elections; and in the new section, it now commits political parties to conduct their primaries 180 days to the date appointed by the commission for elections.
“This means that parties could conduct their primaries and submit the names of their candidates to the commission at least six months to the general elections.
“This will enormously help us so that by say two months to the election, probably all our materials will be on location so there will be less stress,” he said.
Sen. Kabiru Gaya, Chairman Senate Committee on INEC, emphasised that the draft copy of the report of the technical committee was a working document.
“In fact, the purpose of this retreat is to conduct a clause by clause examination of the report and also prepare it for consideration by the Senate and House of Representatives,” he said.
He said that whatever was to be crafted in the electoral bill would be done with the supremacy of the Constitution as a superintendent umbrella.

Cannabis-smoking Tunisians ‘sentenced to 30 years’
Three young Tunisian men are reported to have been sentenced to 30 years in prison for smoking cannabis at a football stadium.
A spokesperson at the regional court that delivered the sentence said that it was based on three separate laws – which include 10 years for drug consumers and traffickers and 20 years for taking drugs in a public place.
An MP has called for a presidential pardon to be issued for the three men.
