WE NEED A HIGH-PROFILE GOVERNMENT: ITALY’S PRESIDENT

Italy’s president has asked the former head of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, to form a new government after the previous coalition collapsed.

President Sergio Mattarella said Italy needed a “high-profile government” to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic and the worst economic crisis in decades.

Politicians failed to agree a coalition following the resignation of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte last week.

Mr Draghi will now have to put forward an administration that leaders support.

He was summoned to Rome’s historic Quirinale Palace on Wednesday by President Mattarella, who gave Mr Draghi a mandate and said he hoped he would break the parliamentary stalemate.

In a brief statement after accepting the challenge, Mr Draghi said Italy was facing a “difficult moment” and that it was time for unity. “I am confident that in talks with parliamentary and other groups, we will find unity and the ability to find a responsible solution.”EPAWe have the extraordinary resources of the EU at our disposal, we have the opportunity to operate with a careful eye on future generationsMario Draghi

Italy’s financial markets welcomed the news that the country’s star technocrat had been brought in, with the Milan stock market up almost 3%. On paper, Mr Draghi has impeccable credentials, BBC Rome correspondent Mark Lowen reports.

Political parties have been divided over how to spend €222bn (£195bn; $267bn) of EU Covid recovery funds, amid a pandemic in which nearly 90,000 Italians have died – the sixth highest death toll in the world.

However, Italy’s anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S), which has been in government since 2018, has already said that it will not back a government led by Mr Draghi.

Sometimes referred to as “Super Mario” – after the hero Italian character in a Nintendo video game – Mr Draghi steered the eurozone through the financial crisis during his eight years as president of the European Central Bank (ECB).

Some analysts and commentators credit him with saving both the eurozone and the euro currency.

The eurozone financial crisis was already a serious problem when Mr Draghi took office at the ECB in November 2011. At its height, the crisis raised concerns that the eurozone could break up altogether.

Mr Draghi responded by promising to do “whatever it takes to preserve the euro”, calling for “urgent action” to implement a substantial bailout fund.

His call for governments to come together and play their role in tackling the debt crisis collectively was initially met with resistance from Germany, but it eventually paid off.

Economies began to grow and subsequently no country left the eurozone.

In his statement on Wednesday he said the challenges Italy now faced were “beating the pandemic, completing the vaccination campaign, offering answers to everyday challenges and getting the country back on track”.

“Mario Draghi was the Italian who saved Europe, and I think now he is the European who can save Italy,” former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi told the BBC’s Newshour programme.

FCTA Officials Collect N10million Bribe To Spare Unapproved Building.

But when the officials received N10million bribe, the demolished building is now being reconstructed.

Officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, Abuja, have been paid N10million bribe to spare a building the government earlier demolished for being unapproved in July 2020.

SaharaReporters learnt that the FCTA Department of Development Control had demolished the building which is located in Sil Estate, within the popular Mbora District, saying it should be a green area for recreation.

When the officials received N10million bribe, the demolished building is now being reconstructed.

The Director of the department, Muktar Galadima, who had led the team on July 15, 2020, had warned that the government would not allow any contraventions that could abuse the Abuja Master Plan hence its resolve to demolish such structures.

He had stated that his men brought down the sprawling building on Plot 4545 which was sitting on “a green area meant for recreation.”

“The area was allocated as a comprehensive development plot for residential purpose and the developer moved to site without necessary planning permit and built all sorts of houses. We noticed what was going on and did serve the developer and the structures all relevant contravention notices, and we moved forward and processed them for removal.

“This developer, called Sil Estate in Mbora, never sought for approval, and we did necessary markings and served him relevant notices but he ignored them. That’s why we had to go there and remove the basic ones sitting on a space designated green area, meant for recreational purposes,” he had said.

The FCTA had said the developer would also be arraigned in court, after the demolition of the buildings.

However, checks by SaharaReporters revealed that the demolished building is now near completion and is a sprawling two-storey building.

A source informed SaharaReporters that the FCTA officials collected the bribe and secretly perfected a plan to convert the green area to accommodate the house for the developer.

The source said, “The so-called demolished building is being rebuilt after collecting money. They demolished it because it was a green area as stated by the director that came to supervise the demolition.

“The FCT director and his men took N10 million to allow for rebuilding. They collected N10 million to convert the green area to accommodate the house for them. And they said the developer was supposed to have been arraigned since last year.”

Ortom bans political appointees from campaigns for 2023

The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Wednesday banned his political appointees from embarking on any form of campaigns towards 2023 general elections.

Also, Mr Ortom stated that he has no ambitious for the coming general election as he is focused on the delivery of his promises to the people of the state.

“I’m not interested in any future elections for now. Likewise I have decided to ban campaigns for all those in my government interested in 2023 elections.

No member of the Benue state executive council or appointees of my government should talk about campaigns or anchor any campaign for me again in my government. I have banned it. Anybody found to be doing so henceforth will be removed.

“They must not involve themselves in any campaign for now so that we can focus on governance. When the time comes to do so, those who are interested will resign and go for their campaigns. But whoever is doing that now is not doing so in the interest of the Benue people,” he added.

Galadima attacks Gov Akeredolu over calls for eviction of herdsmen, calls him educated illiterate

One time factional National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Buba Galadima, has attacked the Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, over his recent eviction order to Fulani herdsmen from forest reserves in the state.

Galadima who spoke in an interview on AIT programme, Kakaaki on Wednesday in Abuja, said Akeredolu is ‘an educated illiterate’ who should not be making such statements which he described as inciting and inflammatory.

Galadima expressed his surprise at the order by a governor who is a lawyer and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), saying that Akeredolu should know that “there was no law that permits him to evict Fulani herders for any reason,” as any Nigerian can choose to live in any part of the country.

He added that the governor has shown his ignorance of the laws of Nigeria and that the said forest belongs to the Federal Government and not Ondo State.

Governor Akeredolu of Ondo State who calls himself a SAN is an educated illiterate. He shouldn’t be giving such orders in the first place. All Nigerians are free to live in any part of Nigeria,” Galadima said in the interview.

“It should be that any group of people living in any part of the country should be protected at all costs irrespective of their tribe, ethnicity or religion.

“So also, the Fulani or any other tribe, be it in Ondo, they are under the protection of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Who owns the forest reserves? Who gazetted the ownership of the forest reserves? It was gazetted by the then colonial masters. Once, it is gazetted, it is a Federal land and even if for instance, it is Ondo land, Nigerians are free to carry out businesses in any part of the country.

“The lands are vested in governors of various states to hold in trust for the people. And in Ondo, they are part of the people that the Act says the governor should hold the land in trust for.

“You see, there are certain things you do; you play the law; you play morality, and you play unity. On this issue, Ondo State governor is supposed to play unity and it’s wrong to declare a certain ethnic group ‘persona non-grata’ in a certain area of your state.

“We now know why there was so much acrimony even from the people in Ondo, when Akeredolu was running for a second term in office.

“He has manifested himself so well that he is not a leader. He suggested that if the people living in Ondo forests are security threat, they should be raided and neutralized rather than being evicted.

“If what he meant was to have the Fulanis registered for easy identification which he later claimed, how would they be registered in their own country? I am not a Fulani and I am not talking for them. This kind of things should not happen.

“Of course, it is legitimate for government to try to identify the actual people who are carrying out heinous crimes, particularly in the obvious infiltration of foreigners, but not to evict.

“There is a difference between identification and eviction. What I said is that it is not right to evict anybody.

“There are Fulani herdsmen in every part of Nigeria. Some of them in South-West, South-East or South-South; some of them speak the indigenous languages more than their own dialects.

“They have adopted the culture of the people. What they have left of their culture is the rearing of cattle and I want Nigerians to understand that there is a difference between bandits who kill, who abduct and kill innocent persons, and Fulani cattle herders.

“In all these, we haven’t seen any Fulani herder who keeps cattle on a farm and ensure the farmer is killed.”

We have no plan to draft Jonathan into 2023 presidential race –APC

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has laid to rest widespread speculations that it was planning to woo former President Goodluck Jonathan, to run as its candidate in the 2023 presidential election.

The Governor of Yobe State and APC Interim Committee Chairman, Mai Mala Buni, who spoke on the issue in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Tuesday, said there was nothing to the rumour as the party has not entered into negotiations with Jonathan on the 2023 election.

In the past few weeks, there have been rumors that some Northern governors on the platform of the APC were trying to persuade the former president to defect to the party and contest on its ticket in 2023.

The rumours gained more ground after Buni led some APC governors like Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi) and Abubakar Badaru (Jigawa), on a solidarity visit to Jonathan on the occasion of his 63rd birthday in November 2020.

However, in the interview, Buni said this was far from the truth as the APC was not in any way trying to convince Jonathan to join the party.

“Those peddling such information they are afraid. But for now, there is nothing in the APC which has anything to do with the aspiration for 2023.

“Even if someone wants to base assumption on our recent visit to him during his birthday, we were there because of his capacity as a former President of Nigeria.

“Again, even if there is nothing, when we are talking of peaceful coexistence, we must give credit to former President Jonathan on the issue of peace. How he accepted defeat in 2015 and resigned to fate. That has qualified him to be a statesman and he is now among our fathers.

“Our visit to Jonathan was pronounced because of his status as a former president; that could be why some may think there was something beneath.

“There are numerous of such visits to leaders of PDP, APC, why are others not being mentioned but Jonathan?

“Even in America where we got this democracy, I’ve not seen where people are being confined to a limit.

“You are talking of democracy and at the same time talking of giving him, don’t forget even when President Buhari went to revalidate party membership in Daura, he said it is the people at the grassroots that will select leaders upwards, that no one should expect to be crowned from Abuja.

“This has shown that in APC now, it is from the lower level upwards. Not that people would be imposed from the top. Then who are we to say we are considering Jonathan? How? It has to be a party affair and once it is a party affair, then we are talking about the people.

“So we have nothing like that in our agenda. What we have now, and is of importance to us, is to ensure peace amongst party members. Also, to bring members of other political parties, whichever party it might be, whoever wants, should come in to the APC.

“This is our plan for now. We are yet to start talking about aspirants, we are not in any discussion about aspirants.”

DSS again warns of plans by ‘elements’ to stir ethno-religious violence in Nigerian

The Department of State Services (DSS), has, once again, sent out a warning to Nigerians to shun violence of any form, as well as reminding citizens of its earlier warnings to the public about “plans by persons and groups to exploit some fault lines to cause ethno-religious violence in parts of the country.”

The DSS, through its spokesman, Peter Afunanya, had, on January 11, issued a warning where it said it had uncovered plans by some elements working with external forces to incite religious violence across the country.

The warning which came in the form of a press release titled “Plots to incite religious violence in Nigeria,” had stated that some states targeted by the criminal elements were Kaduna, Kano, Lagos, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, and some states in the South-East part of the country.

The press release had read in part:

In another statement on Wednesday signed by Afunanya, the DSS said:

“Latest developments indicate desperate efforts by these groups to subvert public order. In this regard, they have continued to resort to inciting, unguarded and divisive statements and acts. The objective is to pit citizens against one another in order to apparently inflame the embers of tribal and religious discords.

“For the umpteenth time, the Service strongly warns these elements to desist forthwith from their (planned) nefarious acts or face the full wraths of the law.

“However, the DSS will, in collaboration with other security and law enforcement agencies, take necessary steps to ensure the safety of lives and property of the citizenry.”

China: Ministry of Education bans the use of phone among chilren

Children in China are to be banned from using their phones in school, the Ministry of Education has ruled.

Pupils will not be allowed to bring mobiles to school without written parental consent.

The authorities say they want to protect young people’s eyesight, improve their concentration and prevent internet addiction.

Schools are being encouraged to find other ways for parents to communicate with children during the school day.

According to one of the country’s newspapers, China Daily, there has been heated debate among parents over the whether the ruling is practical.

The vast majority of children and teenagers in China access the internet via their own smartphones – 74% of under-18s, according to the government-affiliated China Internet Network Information Centre.

But the authorities are concerned about how internet use is affecting the health of the nation’s youth.

There have been rising levels of nearsightedness among children in China and in 2018, the authorities announced plans to regulate the gaming industry which was partially blamed for the problem. They also cited concerns that gaming addiction was damaging mental health.

The following year a curfew was imposed on under-18s, who were restricted to 90 minutes of gaming on weekdays and three hours on weekends and holidays

Many schools in China already restrict the use of mobile phones on their premises. In some extreme cases, phones have been smashed in front of students who have broken the rules.

The topic of a ban has become a major news item in China and on social media, with thousands discussing it on social media site Weibo.

State House gets COVID-19 isolation centre

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Tuesday commissioned a State House Clinic Special Care Centre (COVID-19 Isolation Centre).

At the commissioning of the centre, the Chairman of the PTF, Boss Mustapha, hinted that a COVID-19 testing laboratory would soon be established at the clinic.

Mustapha, according to a statement issued by the Deputy Director of Information in the State House, Attah Esa, said the current administration was using the challenges posed by the pandemic to change Nigeria’s health infrastructure.

He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for approving resources for new health infrastructure, saying the 2021 budget made provision for the establishment of at least one oxygen production plant in all the 36 states in the country.

Mustapha said: ‘‘From just two molecular laboratories for the testing of COVID-19 in Nigeria, we now have over 100 molecular laboratories, public and private, across the 36 States of the Federation

‘‘I want to commend the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Tijjani Umar and the State House management under whose leadership this beautiful edifice is being commissioned.

‘‘I am confident that when the Minister of Health visits, whatever he decides, I can give you my word that we will put a laboratory for testing or a PCR facility in State House Clinic. This is supposed to be our priority.

‘‘I will also speak to the Director-General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, who has the primary responsibility of resourcing, setting up and accrediting laboratories because we need it here.”

Speaking on the efficacy and safety of COVID-19 vaccines to be procured for Nigeria, the PTF chairman said the Federal Government would continue to encourage Nigerians to get vaccinated when the time comes because ‘‘the vaccines are safe, effective and for our benefit.’’

‘‘We will appeal and explain to our people that if you do not take the vaccine, the danger of falling terribly sick and eventually dying is there.

‘‘We will be blunt to them that if you don’t take the COVID-19 vaccine, you may not be able to go anywhere in the world, very soon. Even if you want to go and perform your spiritual obligation, that will be subjected to your COVID-19 status,” Mustapha added.

IGP Adamu Finally Hands Over.

The outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has reportedly handed over to Deputy Inspector General of Police, Operations, DIG Sanusi Lemu, as the most senior police officer.

Adamu who attained the statutory retirement age on Monday was said to have asked Lemu to oversee the administration of the Nigeria Police Force pending the appointment of a new IG by the President.

The IG came to the office briefly earlier today to transfer the authority to Lemu.

A source told PUNCH, “The IG has not officially handed over power to DIG Lemu; he merely asked him to take over as the most senior DIG pending directives from the Presidential Villa. Adamu is still nursing the hope that he may get tenure extension.”

Lemu was appointed the DIG Operations last November following the retirement of DIG Abdulmajid Ali.

He holds a BA(Ed) in Political Science and has attended several professional courses including: Intermediate Command Course, Senior Command Course, Peacekeeping Training Course.

“Igboho has burnt down a Fulani Community in Ogun” – Miyetti Allah .

The Miyyeti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, Ogun State Branch, has alleged that popular activist, Sunday Adeyemo alias Sunday Igboho, razed down another Fulani Community in Igua area of Yewa North in the state.

State chairman of MACBAN, Alhaji Abubakar Ibrahim Dende, told newsmen that the house of the Sarkin Fulani of Igua, Alhaji Adamu Oloru, was burnt down by youths led by Mr. Igboho.

“They burnt the houses and that of Sarkin Fulani, Alhaji Adamu Oloru, located at Igua this [Monday] evening. They also set cattle market ablaze.”

“We have been contacting the security agents, including the DSS, as we are aware that he is coming.”

“We listened to the information on radio, we learnt that he was welcomed by the state government. We are helpless as we don’t have anybody to protect us. Many of our people are now scattered in the bush,” he said.

It was gathered that a Fulani Herdsman identified as Jiji Danmawale was killed in the inferno. Meanwhile, Mr. Igboho visited Ogun state on Monday evening disclosing that he was invited by the state government.

Don’t stir ethnic tension- Tofa

Bashir Tofa, an Elder Statesman, has warned those stoking ethnic tension across the country to desist from doing so in order to avoid a serious crisis.

There has been tension in the country since an ultimatum was issued to herders to vacate the SouthWest over rising insecurity.

Sunday Igboho, Yoruba self-acclaimed activist, had first instigated crisis against the Fulani Community in Oyo State in January, leading to loss of lives and destruction of properties.

But peace was restored after Southern and Northern Stakeholders met in Ibarapa Local Government Area of Oyo where the initial violence took place.

Surprisingly on Tuesday, Igboho stormed Abeokuta in Ogun State, and one person was reportedly killed in the violence that ensued.

In a statement, Tofa called on the federal government to address the situation before it spirals out of control.

Alh.Tofa

“The mayhem we see, almost everyday now, of killings and maiming of people of Northern extraction, including especially, the Fulani, in some other parts of the country, is totally unacceptable. There is clearly a nefarious plan by the enemies of this potentially great country to initiate a violent crisis that may lead to its
destruction.

“Tension is beginning to brew, and if revenge attacks on Southerners begin here in the North, it will be difficult to control. Our enemies from within and outside, some well known by our Security Agencies, are more determined than ever to set us against each other, so that we may get to a point of no return when the conflagration begun.
There is no part of this country that is at peace.

“Local and neighbouring, including foreign terrorist, are busy, fully armed, to cause whatever damage
they can inflict on our dear country. I, therefore, call on the President to take this insecurity and the tribal lynching
happening very seriously, and put up urgent measures to deal with them without any more delays. I am sure, there is concern at the Presidency and discussions are being held,” he said.

Tofa advised the federal government to take urgent and decisive action, adding: “If any Nigerian will not be allowed to live freely and conduct their lives and businesses in any part of the country without being disturbed or molested or
even killed, then no one should be allowed to settle and prosper anywhere else.

“Those foolish leaders and their stupid hirelings who encourage the expulsion of other Nigerians from their States, should remember that their own indigenes also live in other parts. They must stop, or the law should stop them by all means necessary.”

IS TRUMP IN TROUBLE AGAIN?

Donald Trump must be convicted because he is “personally responsible” for the riot at the US Capitol, House Democrats have said.

They detail the former president’s “incitement of insurrection against the republic he swore to protect” in a pre-trial brief released Tuesday.

It calls for him to be disqualified from ever running for office again.

Mr Trump has repeatedly denied his words led to the riot on 6 January.

Prior to the armed insurrection, thousands gathered at a “Save America” rally near the White House and listened to Mr Trump, who urged his supporters to “fight like hell” because “we won [the election] by a landslide”.

House impeachment managers said the former president’s repeated refusal to concede the election to Joe Biden encouraged the riot.

Mr Trump’s “statements turned his ‘wild’ rally on January 6 into a powder keg waiting to blow”, the brief says.

Impeachment managers plan to use Mr Trump’s own words and video footage of the riot to say that “the furious crowd” was “primed (and prepared) for violence if he lit a spark”.

“The evidence is clear. When other attempts to overturn the presidential election failed, former President Trump incited an attack on the Capitol,” it reads.

Lawyers for Mr Trump will argue in next week’s impeachment trial that convicting a now-private citizen would be unconstitutional.

In response, the impeachment managers from the House say the Senate has jurisdiction to act because “a president must answer comprehensively for his conduct in office from his first day in office through his last”.

“This is not a routine corruption charge,” they wrote. “Trump has committed an impeachable offense of historic proportions.”

Unlike in the case of Mr Trump’s first impeachment last year, Democrats have not indicated that they will call any witnesses.

No to covid-19 vaccine- Tanzania government

Tanzania’s government, which has been criticised for its handling of the pandemic, has no plans to rollout Covid vaccines, the health minister says.

The comments come days after President John Magufuli warned officials against acquiring vaccines saying they could harm people, without giving evidence.

Critics have accused him of playing down the threat posed by the virus.

Millions of people have already been inoculated in many countries after the vaccines were given emergency approval.

Vaccines are rigorously tested in trials involving thousands of people before being assessed by health regulators. They look at all the data on the safety and effectiveness of vaccines before approving them for use on a wider population.

Last month, the World Health Organization (WHO) urged Tanzania to consider inoculating its population.

Tanzania is one of the few countries in the world to not publish any data on Covid-19 cases. It last did so in May, when about 500 cases and 20 deaths were recorded. The following month, Mr Magufuli declared Tanzania “coronavirus-free”.

Last month, the president said some Tanzanians had travelled abroad to take the vaccine but “ended up bringing us a strange coronavirus”. The comments were seen as an apparent admission that the virus may be circulating in the country.

At a news conference on Monday, Health Minister Dorothy Gwajima said: “For now the government has no plans to receive the Covid vaccine being distributed in other countries.”

The minister urged Tanzanians to take precautions and to use traditional medicine as a way of dealing with coronavirus, although their efficacy to combat the virus has not been scientifically confirmed

Two FBI agents killed in a gunfight

Two FBI agents have been killed and three others have been wounded during a shootout in Florida while serving an arrest warrant, according to the FBI.

The gunfire began around 06:00 local time (11:00GMT) in the city of Sunrise as agents were investigating a child abuse case, US officials say.

The suspect has also been killed. Asked how many bullets were fired, a police official replied: “Too many to count.”

The gunfight took place at an upscale gated community north of Miami.

“A team of law enforcement officers were there to execute a federal court-ordered search warrant in furtherance of a violent crimes against children case,” a statement from the FBI said.

The statement added that two of the agents had been transported to hospital and were in a stable condition. The deceased agents have not yet been named.

PTF says schools may be shut if spike in covid-19 positive cases continue

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 has said schools across the country may be shut if COVID-19 positive cases continue to rise.

The PTF stated this in a video posted on its Twitter handle on Monday.

In the video, the National Incident Manager, Mukhtar Muhammed said: “The issue of school reopening is something that the PTF has discussed very extensively. The ministry of education decided to open the schools. Based on our own understanding, it was the states that actually wanted to have the schools reopened.

“Now, the PTF is watching this very closely, we are monitoring what is going on and if we find out that cases continue to rise in the country and we start to have incidences in schools, certainly, we will have the schools closed.

“In the first instance, we should have delayed opening of the schools but now that the schools are opened, the PTF will continue to monitor very closely with all the schools to ensure that they institute measures and ensure that people follow as much as possible.”

It would be recalled that government had shut down schools in December, 2020 in the wake of the second wave of the deadly pandemic in the country.

It would also be recalled that Boss Mustapha, the Chairman of the PTF had blamed the reopening of schools, worship centres, businesses and international travels as being responsible for the second wave of the deadly virus in the country.

IPOB not responsible for burning herdsmen houses in South-East – Umahi

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State on Monday said videos making the round on social media purporting that members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) were responsible for burning of houses belonging to herdsmen were not the handiwork of the separatist movement.According to Umahi, communities, rather IPOB were responsible for the acts. The governor  who also disclosed that South-East governors had earlier banned open grazing and movement of cows on foot in the zone, stated this in Abakaliki on Monday during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) membership registration committee.

While warning against politicization of security matters, the governor called on leaders of the South-East geopolitical zone to create a framework that will secure the lives and properties of the people.Umahi, who is the Chairman of the Southeast Governors’ Forum said: “The governors of the southeast had banned not only open grazing, but we have also banned the movement of cows by foot into the southeast.“In each of the five states of the southeast, we are managing ourselves very well. We have also stopped the movement of cows across communities.“What we discussed in the southeast with the herdsmen, with the farmers is the method that has been in place for a long time before now.“What our people must know is that security is not political, what is demanded of the leaders is to put up programs that favour the people and foster national unity.“There is a new dimension that is taking place in the southeast which is very dangerous. It is when the communities use the name of IPOB, the video and upload it to the social media and say it is IPOB that is burning the houses of herdsmen.“It is not IPOB, it is the communities that are doing this and this is very dangerous for the Igbo man. I am talking to us as leaders.”

Lagos Assembly passes anti-cultism Bill seeking to punish parents of culprits

The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed the anti-cultism bill which seeks to punish parents whose wards are found guilty of cultism.

The bill awaits the assent of the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The House passed the bill ‘Unlawful Societies and Cultism (Prohibition) Bill 2020’ during the plenary session on Monday through a voice vote conducted by the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

The speaker said the punishment, although not specified, was to further prohibit unlawful societies and cultism in the state.

“Parents of cultists found guilty of cultism in the state ‘might be liable’ for punishment.

“The bill, if signed into law, will provide for the prohibition of unlawful societies and cultism in Lagos and for connected purposes.

“Though, we will also differentiate between the types of cultism in the country, so that we won’t solve one problem and create another,” he said.

A lawmaker David Setonji, representing Badagry Constituency II, described cultism as a “major challenge to us in the state.”

Mr Setonji, therefore, admonished parents to take proper care of their children by ensuring their compliance with societal norms and values.

“There is nothing wrong in associations coming together, but when it has to do with devilish ideas, causing commotion, that is what we are against.

“As a result, parents should learn to take care of their children to ensure they conform to societal norms and values,” he said.
