Northern youth group calls for removal of CCT Chairman, Umar, over assault

The Northern Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN), has joined those calling for the removal and prosecution of the embattled Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, following his recent assault of a security man at a shopping plaza in Abuja.

On Monday, March 29, Umar was caught on video assaulting the security guard later identified as Clement Sargwak, an employee of Jul Reliable Guard Services Limited at Banex Plaza, Abuja, for allegedly telling him (Umar) that he had wrongly parked his vehicle.

In an attempt to justify the assault, the CCT spokesman, Ibraheem Alhassan, in a press statement, said Umar was rather the victim in the case and that a bunch of ‘Biafra Boys’ had attacked the CCT boss.

With several groups, lawyers and human rights activists calling for Umar’s dismissal and prosecution, the NYCN has also added its voice in condemning the act of Umar who is a highly placed law officer in the country.

In a statement signed by its President, Isah Abubakar, and made available to Ripples Nigeria on Monday, the NYCN expressed its disappointment at the generalization and profiling of a section of the country and the use of “Biafran Boys” to describe Nigerians who are going about their lawful businesses.

The statement reads:

“The Northen Youth Council of Nigeria condemns in totality the acts of Justice Danladi Umar, the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), following a viral video where he is seen assaulting a security guard at the Banex Plaza in Abuja.

Such atrocious act coming from a highly placed officer of the law is not only barbaric but very unfortunate.

“To make matters worse and more condemnable is the CCT spokesman trying to justify the attack on the young man for only doing his duties.

“Another most unfortunate move was by tagging the crowd ‘Biafra Boys’, thereby demonizing a section of the country, something that is capable of stirring further division in the country so that he would escape public scrutiny and the consequences of his action.

“We have every reason to believe that anybody from Eastern Nigeria that appears before the CCT can’t get justice, following the Biafran mindset he holds against them.

The NYCN, therefore, calls for Danladi Umar to resign from his position as the CCT chairman. If he fails to do that, we call on President Muhammadu Buhari to remove him immediately.

“We also appeal to the Inspector General of Police to immediately arrest and prosecute him for assaulting a law-abiding Nigerian on his duty post.

“We also call on the presidency to, as a matter of urgency, replace Umar as the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal if he fails to resign voluntarily.

“We also call on the National Assembly to stop appropriating money to the CCT if Umar fails to resign and the presidency decides to retain him.

We are also mobilising our members in preparation for a grand protest if the above demands are not met.”

Buhari’s UK medical trip, symptom of a national malady —Seadogs

The National Association of Seadogs (NAS) also known as Pyrates Confraternity has berated President Muhammadu Buhari over his latest trip to the United Kingdom for a routine medical check-up.

In a statement titled “President Buhari’s Foreign Medical Trip: Symptom of a National Malady”, issued on Sunday, and signed by the NAS Capoon, Abiola Owoaje, the organisation said the trip was unethical and embarrassing, noting that the President was publicly signalling a vote of no confidence in the healthcare system of the country he presides over.

The group maintained that millions of Nigerians were left to the weak and inefficient healthcare system that the “President so visibly disdains”, since they cannot have foreign medical trips paid for from the public treasury.

“The timing of this latest medical tourism is tragically poignant, coming the same week the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) commenced an indefinite strike over the failure of the Federal Government to implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) it signed with the association and meet other demands which include payment of entitlements as basic as hazard allowance for routine professional hazards and the extraordinary demands of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the statement read.

Owoaje slammed President Buhari for not being able to fulfil his campaign promise to revamp the country’s health sector and put a halt to medical tourism.

“In the six years that he has been in office, President Buhari has abysmally failed to make hospitals in Nigeria functional to the extent that it can be entrusted to handle his health and that of other top government officials.

“It is even more disappointing that the Aso Rock Clinic, the object of inexplicably huge budgetary allocations is demonstrably incapable of meeting the demands of the most senior resident of Aso Rock Villa,” Owoaje said.

He challenged Buhari to use the remaining years of his tenure to work for the improvement of the nation’s healthcare delivery system.

“He should as a matter of priority put efforts in motion, leading the charge and galvanising state governments across the country to ensure the upgrading of public healthcare facilities in the country in line with global best practices. His administration should summon the required will and mobilise the needed funds to address the structural problems in Nigeria’s healthcare ecosystem.

These include the conducive working environment, improved infrastructure, tools, eliminating the ongoing brain drain, improving the welfare of medical and healthcare workers in the country as well as strengthening the organic link between primary, secondary and tertiary levels of healthcare,” he added.

“President Buhari’s preoccupation, as he enters the sixth year out of his eight-year tenure, should be how to develop Nigeria’s healthcare system such that no President after him would need to travel out of the country for a routine medical check-up. Nigerians want a leader who would inspire confidence in the country’s health facilities. President Buhari should strive to be such a leader if he cares about the verdict of history.”

Bayelsa EndSARS panel awards N16m against police for murdered teenager

The Bayelsa State Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality and Other Related Matters investigating extra-judicial killings by the police during the #EndSARS protests last year, has awarded N16m against the police for the killing of a 17-year-old boy, Innocent Kokorifa, who was killed in Yenagoa, the state capital.

The teenager who was the son of a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) official, Daniel Kokorifa, attached to the Rivers State Command, was reportedly killed by a trigger-happy police officer in August 2016.

The father of the deceased, a native of Okpotuwari in the Southern Ijaw, Ijaw local government area of the state, had in his petition submitted on Saturday, numbered BYS/JPI/012/2020, prayed the panel to also consider the sum of N6m incurred since the brutal murder of his son.

While ruling on the petition, the chairman of the panel, Justice Young Ogola (Rtd), awarded Kokorifa the sum of N16m in temporary compensation against the police.

“There is no compensation for what was pronounced as vicarious liability or so, nothing that the policeman, who committed the crime, has already been sentenced to death, can say in his defence,” Ogola remarked during the judgment.

Ebonyi Police refutes reports about escape of suspects from custody

The Police Command in Ebonyi has debunked a report that some suspects on Saturday escaped from police custody in the state.

The rebuttal is contained in a statement signed and issued by the command’s Spokesperson, DSP Loveth Odeh to newsmen in Abakaliki on Sunday, April 4.

Odeh described the news report as mischievous.

“The attention of the the police command in Ebonyi has been drawn to a rumour making waves on social media platform/print media that suspects arrested in connection with the Effium/Ezza-Effium intra communal crisis have escaped from police custody.

The command perceives such rumour as unfounded, mischievous and baseless. It is an attempt to create panic in the minds of people in Ebonyi, mislead the reading public and distract the command,” she stated.

Odeh said there was no record of cell break or escape of either those arrested and handed over to the police in connection with the Effium/Ezza-Effium community crisis, or suspects involved in any other case within the command.

It may interest the public to know that the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi, Mr Aliyu Garba, visited Effium/Ezza-Effium community alongside the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi, Dr Eric Kelechi Igwe on April 3.

“Also in the entourage was the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division Enugu, to inspect troops and mobile policemen deployed to the area as the ongoing crisis has defied many peace processes initiated by the Ebonyi government.

“During the visit to one of the Effium villages, Okpoduma, some suspected Effium indigenes were arrested and not machineries as widely speculated.

“A search within their surroundings by the security officers led to the recovery five dane guns, one locally made pistol and some cartridges.

The suspects and all recovered exhibits are currently with the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discrete investigations,” the PPRO said.

The spokesperson, however, condemned the peddling of falsehood and said it was inimical to the return of normalcy to Effium community .

The command urges the general public to regard the news as a rumour, baseless and mischievous to suit the intention of the originator(s) and go about their lawful businesses,” she stated.

God Showed Me A Vision That Buhari Would Stabilise Nigeria—Tunde Bakare.

Tunde Bakare, senior pastor of Citadel Global Community Church, on Sunday said he supported President Muhammadu Buhari because God told him Buhari has a role in stabilising Nigeria.
Bakare, a critic of successive past administrations who once said he is not under any obligation to protest against the Buhari government, made this statement in a state-of-the-nation broadcast on Sunday.

Highlighting his role in the coalition of political parties that birthed the All Progressive Congress and the eventual emergence of Buhari in 2015, Bakare said God had in a vision shown him that Buhari has a critical role in the stabilisation of Nigeria.

“After the controversial and divisive 2011 elections, as Nigeria drifted along with sectional undercurrents and the nation sought a unifying force, some of us prevailed on General Muhammadu Buhari not to quit the stage but to take back his words and form a coalition of the best of the North and the best of the South to salvage our nation,” Bakare said.

“I must admit that I played a critical role in that mission. God had shown me in a vision that GMB still had a role to play in stabilising Nigeria.”

Since assuming power in 2015, Buhari has shown no commitment towards stabilising the country. His actions have often cast him as a sectional leader who does not care much about Nigeria’s diversity.

Columnist and Public Affairs analyst, Professor Farouk Kperoogi, detailed how the President publicly betrayed his “deep-seated loathing” of Igbos, Nigeria’s third-largest ethnic group.

The President has often been accused of prioritising issues concerning his Northern Fulani ethnic group, particularly the nomadic herdsmen, to the detriment of other tribes.

Buhari’s manifest clannish sentiments have heightened renewed agitations among secessionist and self-determination groups, including IPOB and some Yoruba activists.

In his last Christmas sermon, fiery cleric, Bishop Hassan Kukah, warned that the country risked disintegration if the President does not reverse his nepotistic attitude to governance.

In its 2020 human rights practices report on Nigeria, the US stated that the Buhari administration was in the habit of handing out important federal positions to “particular ethnic groups.”

Lamenting the country’s spate of insecurity under the watch of Buhari, however, Mr Bakare said security governance is “superficial” and “inadequate.”

Peoples Gazette quoted Bakare to have said, “Years after the government assured Nigerians that Boko Haram had been “technically defeated,” we are once again confronted with entire villages being overrun.

“While I commend the bravery of our armed forces, the worsening security situation is an indication that our approach to security governance is simply superficial and inadequate to deal with the root causes of the problem.”

Bakare further urged the Buhari government to consider a national rebirth conference focused on “devolution of policing powers to the subnational governments”, arguing that calls for “restructuring” are not an attack on Nigeria’s unity.

“Restructuring means empowering the North West, the North Central, the North East, the South West, the South-South and the South East so that every part of our country will be safe and prosperous,” Mr Bakare said. “Show me one person who does not want this for our country, and I will show you an enemy of Nigeria.”

Group wants Lagos govt to probe use of N1.9bn for waterworks rehabilitation

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has implored the Lagos State government to probe funds released since 1999 for the rehabilitation of the existing waterworks in Lagos.

This probe includes the N1.6bn released under the Akinwunmi Ambode administration, the group stated.

Oluwafemi Akinbode, the Executive Director, CAPPA, made this call on Sunday, April 4, at the public presentation of a Report titled “Water & COVID-19 : One Year after Damning Report, Water Shortage still Persists in Lagos”, a book in commemoration of this year’s World Water Day.

According to Oluwafemi, this year’s World Water Day’s theme, “Valuing Water”, reinforces their conviction that the water sector must be salvaged from for-profit entities and their promoters in government, who have made it virtually impossible for our people to access safe and affordable water.”

He also warned that the water situation in the metropolis is so dire, causing apprehension among Lagos residents who fear exposure to diseases while sourcing for water from unwholesome places.

The Kaduna State Government has refuted media reports that it had appointed intermediaries to negotiate with bandits, on its behalf.

Mr Samuel Aruwan, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, made the clarification in a statement on Sunday, April 4, in Kaduna.

“The attention of the Kaduna State Government, under the leadership of Gov. Nasir El-Rufai, has been drawn to reports in the media that it has appointed representatives to interface with bandits on its behalf.

The State Government hereby, clarifies firmly that such intermediaries have never been appointed,” he said.

Aruwan said the position of the Kaduna Government remained the same and that the state would not negotiate with, or pay ransom to bandits, and “any person who claims to do so in any capacity, if found, will be prosecuted accordingly.

“Citizens are advised to report the details of any persons posing as official government negotiators to the Kaduna State Security Operations”, Aruwan said.

Makinde cautions individuals politicising insecurity over 2023 ambitions

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has cautioned people politicising security issues in the state, saying they were making a mistake.

The governor, who addressed the congregations at the St. Peters Anglican Cathedral, Aremo, Ibadan, on Sunday, maintained that issues concerning the country’s security shouldn’t be politicised

Although Makinde admitted that the state was experiencing security challenges, he stressed that the problem was not peculiar to the state but the country as a whole.

He asked: “If there’s no Oyo State or Nigeria by 2023 because of the politicisation of security; who and what are they going to govern?”

The governor urged individuals politicising the security challenges in the state because of their 2023 political ambitions to seek the face of God instead of engaging in actions that could trigger insecurity in the state.

He said the state government had taken time to investigate reports of insecurity across Oyo State and was making efforts to better equip security operatives.

“The Kaduna State Government hereby clarifies firmly that such intermediaries have never been appointed.

“The position of the Kaduna State Government remains the same: the government will not negotiate with or pay ransoms to bandits.

“Any person who claims to do so in any capacity, if found, will be prosecuted accordingly.

“Citizens are urged to report the details of any persons posing as official government negotiators to the Kaduna State Security Operations Room on 09034000060 and 08170189999, or email internal.security@kdsg.gov.ng.”

The bandits have failed to release them after many days in captivity.

Innocent Chukwuma, Nigeria leading and prominent civil society leader is dead.

Innocent Chukwuma, Nigeria leading and prominent civil society leader has gone to rest. He died last night, Saturday at the age of 55.
He was CLEEN Foundation’s founder and Representative of FORD Foundation in West Africa, he worked for reform of criminal justice system.

PDP appeals to Taraba workers to suspend strike

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Taraba State on Friday appealed to striking workers in the state to suspend the action.

The PDP Chairman in the state, Rev. Kefas Agbu, who made the call during a chat with journalists in Jalingo, urged the workers to embrace dialogue on their demand for the payment of N30,000 minimum wage and other welfare packages in the state.

Agbu expressed regret that the workers’ strike had virtually closed all economic activities in the state.

He said: “I appeal to labour unions in the state to suspend the industrial action and embrace further dialogue in resolving the matter.

“I know that the delay in the implementation is due to other competing demands from key sectors of the economy, which the state government is fixing.”

The PDP chief also condemned sycophants and mischief-makers trying to destabilise the party in the state.

“Some people will just want to create an atmosphere of crisis and I don’t know what they stand to gain. We are a one united family in Taraba.

“When I took over as chairman last year, I constituted a committee to assess the structure of the party and issues that needed attention.

The committee submitted its report and we further constituted a White Paper committee which has also submitted its report.

The blueprint of the committee is out for action and the content of the report is being implemented.

“We are repositioning the party to maintain the winning trend as far as we can,’’ Agbu added.
