#COVID-19: Buhari seeks debt relief for African countries

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on European countries and global financial institutions to consider reducing the devastating effect of the coronavirus pandemic on African economies by restructuring debt portfolios, opting for complete reliefs.

The President also canvassed for the release of vaccines to the African continent, which he said was still behind in protecting majority of its citizens.
President Buhari made the call on Tuesday at the Financing Africa Summit held at Grande Palais Ephemere in Paris, France, with the theme: “External Financing and debt Treatment”

In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, in Abuja late Tuesday night, the Nigerian leader said the fall in commodity prices as Covid-19 took a toll on the global economy further slowed growth in some countries and strained health facilities.
The statement quoted the President as saying, “It is in this vein that we solicit the support of the French government with its influence in the European Union to lend its voice to the efforts being made to mobilize additional resources for developing economies most especially Africa in order to strengthen the quantum of investments to our economies.
“This financial support should also be extended to the private sector.”
President Buhari advocated that the European Union should encourage fair and equitable distribution of the COVID-19 vaccines in less developed countries, and promote the establishment of manufacturing facilities.
According to him, many African countries were already experiencing debt distress and the Debt Service Suspension by France and G-20 does not go far enough, adding that there was need for more sustainable and affordable financing solutions, including debt relief and further debt restructuring.
On the Paris Agreement for Climate Change, President Buhari noted that African countries would need financial support for green energy investment and COP-26.

He said Nigeria will refocus on gas while adopting a Strategic Revenue Growth Initiative.
On the theme of “Africa Private Sector — Reforms – Infrastructure’’, President Buhari said Public Private Partnership (PPP) will be fully explored to ensure more precision in development, cutting down waste and reducing chances of corruption.
“The government intends to leverage on Public Private Partnership to bolster its job creation, and anti-corruption drive. In terms of job creation, Nigeria has an abundant labour force since 30.5 percent of its population is between the ages of 25 and 54.” he said.

Reno Omokri to lead protest to ”harrass” Buhari out of Paris

Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri is set to lead a protest in Paris, France, to ‘harass’ President Muhammadu Buhari back to Nigeria.

He urged Nigerians in Paris to convene at the Temporary Exhibition Centre, in front of the Eiffel Tower on Tuesday for a peaceful protest.

The author and communications specialist earlier conducted a poll on his Facebook page soliciting the idea of Nigerians particularly the youths to ascertain whether to protest or allow President Buhari remain in France.

At the end of the poll, he concluded to embark on the protest after majority of his supporters opted in for the #harassBuhariOutOfParis.

Omokri made his decision known in a post on his official Facebook page.

“Do you love Nigeria? Are you based in Paris? Join us for the #HarassBuhariOutOfParis peaceful protest tomorrow, 12 noon, Paris Time, at the Temporary Exhibition Centre, in front of the Eiffel Tower.

“Muhammadu Buhari can’t be globetrotting, while Nigeria is drifting. Go back and fix Nigeria!

“Please do this for the love of Nigeria”, he wrote.

Recall that Omokri had initiated a protest in Abuja House, London, over a month ago during the president’s medical trip to the United Kingdom.

PDP governors demand restructuring, devolution of powers to state

Governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday, demanded the devolution of powers to states, following the heightening tension and insecurity across Nigeria.

The governors who issued a communique at the end of a meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, deliberated on worsening insecurity, thereby asking President Muhammadu Buhari to sign an executive bill to the National Assembly on the amendment of the Nigerian Constitution.

As a solution to the raging farmers-herdsmen clashes, the governors also backed the decision of the southern governors on open grazing and restructuring.

Seventeen governors in the southern region, in a communiqué at the end of a meeting in Asaba last week, banned open grazing and nomadic pastoralism across the South.

Part of PDP governors’ demands was also an urgent meeting of the Nigerian Police Council on the implementation of strategies to combat the recurring attacks on police officers, while urging the federal government to make their welfare its priority.

They further called on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to make policies that will foster national unity and cohesion.

Read the full communique below:

The PDP GOVERNORS’ FORUM met in Ibadan, Oyo State on Monday, 17th May 2021, further reviewed the State of the nation, particularly, practical next steps to take to advance the conversation on the worsening security situation and collapsing economy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. At the end of the one-day consultative meeting, the Forum, issued the following Communique.

1. The meeting called on Mr President as the Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria and Commander in Chief of Nigerian Armed Forces to immediately send an Executive Bill to the National Assembly to amend the Nigerian Constitution to devolve more powers to the States with respect to security arrangements culminating in some form of State Policing and the general security architecture.

2. In the interim, Mr President should summon an immediate meeting of the Nigerian Police Council, which comprises Mr President and all State Governors and other critical stakeholders to evolve and implement strategies to combat the present threats to our union, especially with respect to policing. The meeting agreed that the Police Force still remains the appropriate institution to secure our democracy and should not be subjected to personal attacks. The welfare, training, equipment, funding of all security agencies should be given priority.

3. The meeting supports the earlier position taken by the Nigeria Governors Forum, Northern Governors Forum and recently by the Southern Governors Forum to adopt ranching as the most viable solution to the herders/farmers clashes in Nigeria; the restructuring of the Nigerian federation to devolve more powers and functions to the States; and reform of various civil institutions to achieve efficiency and equity for all sections of Nigeria.

4. The meeting enjoins all Nigerians to work together to achieve peace and harmony with one another, devoid of discrimination based on ethnicity, religion and other cleavages. To this end, the meeting called on the incompetent and rudderless APC Government to take bold and deliberate steps to de-escalate and lower tensions in our country, and concentrate on projects and policies that will enhance and promote national unity and cohesion.

5. The meeting re-iterated our earlier call for the National Assembly to expedite action on the passage of the Electoral Act that will ensure a free and fair election, including provisions for electronic accreditation and electronic transmission of votes.

6. The meeting thanked the Host Governor, His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for being a gracious and wonderful host, and congratulated him for the many landmark developmental projects he has executed, and urged him to continue to work with all stakeholders in the South West Zone to ensure that PDP takes over majority of the States in the Zone.

I became poorer as governor – Rochas Okorocha

Senator Rochas Okorocha, has said he became poorer after spending eight years as governor of Imo state.

The lawmaker representing Imo West Senatorial District in the Senate, said this on a Channels TV programme, Sunday Politics.

According to the former governor, people seem to have forgotten so easily that he was a successful person before becoming governor in 2011.

Okorocha also dared anyone to come forth with evidence that he is corrupt and mismanaged Imo State funds while in office.

He said; “I challenge anybody to prove that I acquired any property with any government fund. I think people have forgotten that I was Rochas before becoming the governor of Imo State; I think they have forgotten completely.

If anything, becoming a governor made me even poorer than what I was in the past. I don’t know whether I acquired any property here in Abuja, there is none.”

The lawmaker said the hotel linked to him belongs to his wife which is also a source for their foundation. Okorocha wondered how he could have stolen the “meager” monthly allocation the State receives from the Federal Government.

Speaking about his ordeal after he was called by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the senator said he was invited by the commission based on a report written by others.

The invitation was based on a statement made by other people, but I said to them that I have not come to honour your invitation because the matter was already in court and once a matter is in court, we cannot talk about it.

Imo state government has taken me to court on the same subject matter, and we are at the Federal High Court in Abuja, so I told EFCC I cannot be called, so I was arrested, and I made my statement” he said.

You can’t make a difference with Twitter revolution – Governor Fayemi to youths

Ekiti state governor, Kayode Fayemi, has urged Nigerian youths to go beyond “Twitter revolution” and take up political roles if they want to effect change.

Fayemi said the youths must participate in “retail politics” in their respective wards, just like he had decided to do.

He was speaking at the national security and peace symposium organised on Friday in Ibadan to mark the 45th birthday anniversary of Shina Peller, member of the house of representatives from Oyo state.

The governor said; “If we want to make a difference, our young ones cannot just be doing Twitter revolution. They have to be on the ground, they have to be in their wards, in the constituencies.

They have to play retail politics with the people in order to really connect themselves beyond just writing 140 letter word on Twitter or Facebook.

“I stupidly decided that I was going to go into politics rather than stick to my academia which would have been a safer place to be than politics. But I am sure all of us know that you can affect more lives and people in politics.

“That is what Shina has done. He removed himself from just being a paper-based politician by being in the midst of the people.”

Nigerian Jews hold special prayer for Israel in Onitsha

Some Nigerian Jews of Igbo extraction have reportedly held a special prayer for Israel amid it’s ongoing conflict with Palestine.

There have been cross-border fighting between Israel and Palestinian armed groups in Gaza over the past one week.

It all began with a number of separate but interrelated incidents in East Jerusalem, which escalated, became militarised.

On the evening of 7 May, Israeli police clashed with young Palestinians and used force against worshippers at the Al-Aqsa mosque inside the walled Old City, injuring dozens

Responding to the events in Jerusalem that same day, Hamas’s military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, admonished Israel to halt violence against Palestinians in the city.

It issued an ultimatum for Israel to withdraw its forces from Al-aqsa and Sheikh Jarrah.

Shortly after the deadline expired, Hamas fired a series of rockets toward Jerusalem. Israeli forces retaliated by launching airstrikes on Gaza.

Amid the growing tensions in the region, some Igbo Jews converged in Onitsha Synagogue to hold special prayer for Israel.

No alternative to Gov Sule in 2023 – Nasarawa speaker

The Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, said on Saturday there is no alternative to Governor Abdullahi Sule and All Progressive Congress (APC) in the state in 2023.

Abdullahi stated this when he hosted individuals and groups that paid him Sallah homage at his Umaisha county home in Toto local government area of the state.

He described Governor Sule as a leader with great passion and zeal for peace, unity, and speedy growth of the state, hence the need for all to rally around him to succeed beyond 2023.

The speaker said: “The handwriting is very clear on the wall, as far as I am concerned in Nasarawa State we have no any other candidate to file in 2023 apart from Governor Sule.

With the antecedence of Governor Sule, especially some of us that are working closely with him know very well that his project, his dream, his thinking day and night is all about Nasarawa State.

“So, what else do we want than to give him all the necessary support to succeed and transform our beloved state because if God spares our lives and by his grace, A.A. Sule will serve for eight years.”

Abdullahi stressed that peace was priceless and the first instrument of development, hence the need for the people of the state to give the governor all the needed support to enable him to succeed.

His peace and developmental efforts are encouraging more investors to the state to boost socio-economic activities,” he added.

I can’t be cowed, ban on open grazing final – Wike

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Saturday declared his readiness to implement ban on open grazing in the state.

Governors of states in Southern Nigeria had on Tuesday banned open grazing and movement of cattle on foot in the region.

They also demanded the devolution of powers, fiscal federalism, and state policing among others at a meeting held in Asaba, Delta State.

Some individuals including the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan had knocked the governors over some of the decisions taken at the meeting.

However, Wike who spoke at a grand reception held in his honour by the people of the Ogoni ethnic nationality in Bori, Khana local government area of the state, said he cannot be cowed by anyone from implementing the ban on open grazing in Rivers State.

The governors stressed that he has taken further steps to enforce the decision.

He said: “Nobody can cow me. The government cannot cow me. I will say my mind and I will do what is right for my people. Nobody can kill me before my time. I will die the day God wants me to die.

“Let me also tell those who are criticizing Southern governors’ ban on open grazing, let me inform them that I have taken further steps to enforce what the southern governors resolved in Asaba.

We have taken a decision and there is no going back. Enough is enough. We (Southerners) are not second-class citizens of this country. We also own this country and we must partake in what is happening in this country.”

Israeli air raid kills 10 members of Palestinian family, including 8 children

10 members of a Palestinian family, including two women and eight children, have been killed by an Israeli air raid on their home in the Shati refugee camp in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, following another night of relentless bombardment of the besieged enclave.

In the early hours of Sunday, rescue workers were digging through the rubble of the Abu Hatab family home where more people are believed to be buried following the bombardment said to be the worst since the fighting started.

According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), Shati is third largest of the Gaza Strip’s eight refugee camps and one of the most crowded and home to more than 85,000 refugees, who all reside in an area of just 0.52 square kilometres.

The head of the family, Mohammed al-Hadidi, narrated how his wife and four sons, Suheib, 14, Yahya, 11, Abdelrahman 8, and Wisam 6, were all killed as they were visiting his wife’s brother to celebrate the Eid-iL-Fitr when the strike occurred.

Another victim, Almeqdad Jameel, a resident of Shati refugee camp, said that at least five missiles were fired from Israeli fighter jets on the house.

A wall of fire filled the street, and shrapnel and glass flew everywhere, the sound was deafening, and terrified everyone,” he said.

The violence in the occupied West Bank marks the largest number of people killed for years with over 200 people killed so far, including at least 31 children and 20 women.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said Palestinians had been targeted with live ammunition, as well as rubber bullets and teargas.

Israel has continued a bombing operation the government says it is targeting Palestinian militants in Gaza, the Palestinian Health Ministry reported, adding that at least 950 people, including 254 children have sustained injuries as a result of Israeli airstrikes.

A spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement on Sunday that live ammunition was used after “crowd dispersal means” (referring to tear gas and rubber-coated bullets) had failed to stop the unrest.

The IDF estimated about 5,000 people had been involved in what it called riots across the West Bank, with participants throwing stones and incendiary devices at soldiers and military positions.

Miyetti Allah asks herdsmen to leave southern states over ban on open grazing

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has called on all Fulani herdsmen in the southern states of Nigeria to leave the region following a call by the governors to ban open grazing.

In a statement signed by Chairman of the Bauchi State chapter of MACBAN, Sadiq Ibrahim Ahmed, and made available to Ripples Nigeria on Sunday, the body urged herders operating in the south to urgently leave the region as “the governors of the 17 states that make up the region are bent on frustrating their business as well as turn the people against herders.”

The MACBAN letter to herders reads:

“This is a simple calculation. We are heading for secession. The rulers are no longer interested in the people. If some people are banned from open grazing, there is nothing more. Fulani people should move out from there. It is very simple.

Must we transport the cattle there? I have said it before. We have an option of breeding our cattle here (North). We are peace lovers. Let them come and buy from us. It is some people’s fault.

“The Southern governors can do that. There is no problem, let them do what they want. If the Northern governors feel like, they can ban open grazing. We don’t care.

“The President is there as a figurehead. He doesn’t know what he’s doing. He is not controlling anybody. In our country now, everyone does what he feels like. The country is already moving apart. Where is the central government, if some governors can meet and take decisions that are against the Constitution?

We also call on the President to step aside or for Nigerians to put heads together and elect a credible president in 2023, a leader with focus and competence. Nigeria should get a leader with a good example, who is ready to sacrifice his life for his subjects.”

El-Rufai stands ground against labour’s threat of strike, says we will not succumb to cheap blackmail

The Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai has called the bluff of organized labour by saying his government will not succumb to ‘cheap blackmail’ on the strike notice which has been called for tomorrow, May 17.

In a statement during a press conference on Saturday in Kaduna, El-Rufai who was represented by Head of Service, Bariatu Muhammed, described the threat by labour to embark on a strike over the refusal of the state government to follow laid down rules in the recent sacking of some civil servants as a futile gesture, warning that he would not condone any disruption of essential services in the state as a result of the strike.

According to the government, the trade unions planned to use hoodlums during the strike to disrupt the peace of the state and had notified security agencies to take action.

As is appropriate, the security agencies have been notified of the plans of some trade unionists to recruit hoodlums, including from other states, to create a destructive spectacle and further their self-serving narrative about public service jobs and insecurity.

“The government has made it clear that it is not sustainable to persist in spending 84% to 96% of its FAAC receipts on salaries and personnel costs as has been the experience of the state since October 2020.

This government was not elected to devote most public funds to paying government workers and treat that as its defining governance mission, to the detriment of developing the state and its people. The government explained that the rightsizing of the public service would affect political appointees and civil servants.

“The necessary verification of credentials for full implementation of this painful but necessary decision is still being done. It has not determined the total number of officers that might be affected by the decision.

The Kaduna State Government prefers to take lawful and rational steps that are within its powers to rightsize its personnel and thereby reduce its wage bill. We will not, therefore, succumb to the veritable campaign of lies and misrepresentation by the trade unions on the matter.”

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Sunday fly out of Nigeria to France on an 4-day official visit.

Fulanis are ready for breakup of Nigeria, more than any other ethnic nationality – Miyetti Allah

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, MACBAN, says the Fulani ethnic group is more prepared for division of Nigeria than any other ethnic nationality.

National Secretary of Miyetti Allah, Alhassan Saleh stated this while speaking to Sahara Reporters.

Amid the insecurity and tension caused by herders/farmers clash in some parts of Nigeria, southern governors had recently banned open grazing in the entire 17 states of the south.

Saleh, speaking on the governors’ resolution, said Fulani herders are not the problem facing the country.

He added that the Fulani ethnic group is ready for division of the country.

He said, “Herders are insignificant when it comes to problem of this country, are they the ones looting the treasury? What damages are they causing to this country? Compare to the criminal activities of ‘Yahoo’ boys (Internet fraudsters), kidnappers, political looters, bandits in power, vagabonds in power like Governor (Samuel) Ortom, do you think if there is no oil money, all these things will be happening?

“Today we are ready, let them divide the country, let them not wait till tomorrow. We are better prepared than any ethnic nationality. So we are ready, let them divide the country, let us die, we that don’t have the oil.”

All Nigerians are asking me to run for President, I won’t disappoint – Yahaya Bello

Governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello, says he will in due time, answer the call of Nigerians for him to run for President in 2023.

He made this known on Friday night while speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

Bello said; “Nigerians, the youth and women, and all Nigerians, including very objective elites are asking me to run for President in 2023.

“And I believe it is high time that we look into capacity, who can do the job, who is going to unify this country. And I think they are seeing something in me that they are asking me to come and unite and fix this country.

My answer will be in the affirmative in a few time from now.

“I want to urge each and every one of us that are urging me to come to be patient. It’s a work in progress. And by the grace of God, I am not going to disappoint you when the time comes for me to give a response to that.”

Restructuring means allowing youths take over leadership of Nigeria – Yahaya Bello

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state, has said the best way to restructure the country is to allow Nigerian youths to take over the leadership of the country.

He made the comment on Friday during a Channels TV programme, ‘Politics Today’, while reacting to the recent resolve by the Southern Governors.

Recall that 17 southern governors under the aegis of Southern Nigerian Governors Forum, SNGF, on Tuesday, unanimously called for the restructuring of the country to put the current agitation for secession to an end.

The governors while deliberating on the current security situation in the region, also banned open grazing to end the incessant crisis between Fulani herdsmen and farmers.

Bello faulted the move for restructuring, stating that the governors are also contributors to the bad governance in the country.

He said: “My definition of restructuring is allowing the younger generation to take over the leadership of this country.

“In some quarters where the restructuring is sounding so loud, looking at history and performances, how have they been able to perform when they were given positions of authority in this country?

“Those of us that are still in authority today, how have we been able to implement programs that can benefit the lives of the people?

How much have we taken the people seriously, how much have we accounted for what we have been entrusted with?”

We are surprised with the level of insecurity – President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to the elite and Nigerians to be more understanding of the military as the country grapples with a high level of insecurity.

Buhari said the spate of attacks and kidnappings in the north-west is a “big surprise and disappointment”.

A statement released by Presidential spokesman Garba Shehu, on Thursday, said Buhari made the comment while speaking with journalists at the State House shortly after observing the Eid prayer.

He said the military is making efforts to tackle the situation but that it takes a “very long process” to achieve the desired results.

The president also said his administration is doing its best with available resources.

The statement read in part; “The elite should make the attempt to understand the military. If we order for weapons and armored vehicles, it takes time for the manufacturers. It takes time to ship them and when brought here eventually, they are taken to training institutions, train the trainers before sending them to the field. This is a very long process.

“I expect Nigerians to be more understanding on the issues involved, looking at the time and available resources.

For example, when we came in, in the Northeast, ask people in Adamawa and Borno States and the South South in terms of security. Without security, you can’t do anything. Our big surprise and disappointment are what is happening in the Northwest and we are dealing with it.”
