Emefiele tells banks to stop PoS charges

Central Bank governor Godwin Emefiele has asked banks to stop high charges by the Point of Sale (PoS) agents on every transaction made by their customers.

”I am going to be calling a meeting with the banks this evening or by tomorrow, if those charges go to or those charges have been charged through the bank, we are going to have an arrangement with even telcos to see how those charges can actually at this time be stopped.

“Those charges at this time should be stopped. So, if we know whatever you are making that you’re not making because we stopped it, we can collect it somewhere and look for a way to pay you.

“But we don’t want you to continue to create pain on those who want to use alternative channels when they cannot have cash in their pocket.

“We will go into this later this night or even tomorrow, we’re going to call a meeting of both the banks and the mobile networks; at this time nobody should be charged, if you are charged, we will need to know about it.

“But we would want this service to continue to be offered. Whatever it is in terms of volume and number that you have carried out. We will look for a way to pay you your money,” he said.

The redesigned naira notes comprising N200, N500 and N1,000, came into use on December 15, 2022, after they were unveiled by President Muhammadu Buhari on November 23, 2022 in Abuja.

INEC assures adequate security for corps members on election duties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reassured members of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) of their safety during the 2023 general election.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC chairman, said this when he received the Director -General, the NYSC, Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed on a courtesy visit to his office on Thursday in Abuja.

Mr Yakubu said that INEC placed great priority on the comfort, safety and security of the NYSC members.

He said that over the years INEC had continued to work with NYSC to improve the comfort of the corps members while engaged in election duties.

Mr Yakubu said that the commission had also been working with security agencies to ensure the security of corps members during elections.

He assured that no NYSC members would be abandoned at polling units after the election as INEC was making contact with members of the transport union to ensure that all corps members were safely returned to their base after the election.

Mr Yakubu also said that INEC had already made arrangements with NYSC to train corps members in their camps across the country.

He said that the INEC was already working on its schedule with NYSC for the training of the corps members across the country, saying that those in Enugu and Kano would be trained before leaving camps.

“We assure that we will continue to implement the terms of the MOU we signed with the NYSC,” he said.

Mr Yakubu added that INEC would continue to work very closely with NYSC in the conduct of all elections.

“The reality around the world is that no electoral management body conducts elections on the strength of its staff members. All electoral commissions engage ad hoc or temporary staff for election.

“But we are extremely fortunate in Nigeria to have this large pool of young, knowledgeable and patriotic Nigerians in all parts of the country, engaging in important national assignment that when election comes they support in the conduct of the elections in the country.

“I can’t see how the commission can conduct elections without the involvement of NYSC. It is simply unimaginable that we can conduct elections without the NYSC,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Ahmed said that the NYSC would strive hard to ensure that the terms of MoU between the two agencies were implemented to the letter.

He said that the NYSC was already sensitising corps members on the importance of participating in the election.

“You know there are a lot of fears. This will happen, that will happen, but we try to be very clear to them. It is a duty and a responsibility for them to actually do their best and take the responsibility.

“Tomorrow they will be proud that they are part and puzzle of the growth and the development of democracy in this country,” he said.

Mr Ahmed commended the INEC chairman for agreeing to improve the welfare of the corps members, saying that would go a long way to motivate them.

He said that INEC’s constant reassurance of security for NYSC members had continued to give them confidence to participate in the election.

“On our part we will continue to also sensitise them that they are actually secured and everything possible will be done to make sure that nothing happened to them in the course of their duties.”

On training of corps members in camps, he urged INEC to ensure that Enugu and Kano States that were outstanding were done before they leave camps.

“Yes INEC has promised to train these corps members in the camp. That has been done.

“But I think there’s a problem in Kano and Enugu states, the training is yet to take place. Maybe something would be done to ensure that it takes place,” he said.

Bandits leader shows off new naira notes in viral video

Notorious bandit Kachalla Baleri flashed new naira notes in a viral propaganda video to demonstrate his unrestrained access to cash.

This comes as Nigerians continue to suffer with acute shortage of cash in circulation since the Central Bank announced the redesign of higher denominations of the naira while withdrawing old notes from the economy.

CBN governor Godwin Emefiele said while announcing the policy last year that part of the target was to cut off cash supply to bandits and terrorists who continue to kidnap for huge ransom.

In the viral video seen on social media Thursday, Mr Baleri flanked on both sides by three of his gang members, armed with AK 47 rifles, was seen in possession of the new naira notes, deriding President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime of lying that new naira notes policy will bar bandits from kidnapping for ransom.

“It is a barefaced lie to claim that the naira redesign will prevent terrorists, I mean those of us they designated as terrorists from accessing money.

But you can see the new notes here with us,” Mr Baleri said.Showing off with the new notes, the bandits leader said “as you can see, this one is the N200 new note, this other one is the N500 and this one is the N1,000 new notes. We are in the jungle but we have them.”

We cannot immediately ascertain when and where the viral video was recorded.

However, the development raises questions on how bandits in the forest have access to new naira notes that have been scarce in circulation.

Kwara govt employs 200 sweepers to clean Ilorin metropolis

The Kwara government has engaged 200 new social workers to improve waste management and public hygiene in the Ilorin metropolis.

This is contained in a statement issued in Ilorin by Yakub Aliagan, the Press Secretary in the Ministry of Environment.

Mr Aliagan said that Remilekun Banigbe, the state Commissioner for Environment, had said that the new development would improve the reorganisation of the system for efficient management of waste in the tsta e capital.

Mrs Banigbe also said the newly engaged social workers would replace the Social Waste Contractors from Inter Project Nigeria Limited and Prime Scape Nigeria Limited, whose contracts had just ended.

She also said that the social waste contractors were engaged to complement government efforts in maintaining a clean and hygienic environment.

“The contractors will evacuate waste and keep the roads within the Ilorin metropolis clean, because the government has decided to double down on these efforts by redesigning the scheme for better results,” she said.

The commissioner however revealed that the recruitment by Govo AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq included absorbing the operatives from the former Social Waste Contractors for the continuation of their duties and to prevent hardship.

She said the newly employed sweepers would be assigned to various roads within the Ilorin metropolis to complement the existing local government Eco-Cleaners within the Central region of the state.

She reiterated the commitment of the administration to continue to promote a hygienic and conducive environment that would foster good living for its citizens.

She also charged the people of the state to take full ownership and responsibility of their surroundings, saying that improper disposal of refuse is a major cause of epidemic outbreak.

Mrs Banigbe further encouraged residents of the state to imbibe a positive waste disposal culture towards a cleaner Kwara.

Naira notes deadline should be extended to June, SDP advises Buhari

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has advised the All Progressives Congress governors and stalwarts to address APC’s internal wrangling, urging President Muhammadu Buhari to extend the deadline for using the old N200, N500 and N1,000 banknotes to June.

“We advise the APC governors to protect our hard-earned democracy by addressing their party’s internal issues for the benefit of the masses.

The APC principal candidates for the forthcoming elections should come together and cause their party leadership to meet with Mr president and settle all issues of concern,” Alfa Mohammed, SDP national publicity secretary, gave the advice on Thursday in an interview in Abuja.

Mr Mohammed said Nigerians were going through untold hardship due to the ill-timed Central Bank of Nigeria money swap programme and the biting artificial fuel scarcity.

“There is no doubt that the terrible effect of the ill-timed CBN swap programme, just like the biting artificial fuel scarcity, is causing untold hardship on Nigerians, especially those at the lower rung of the economy whose daily survival depends on daily cash transactions like the unskilled job seekers, hawkers and traders at the remote areas,” he explained.

The SDP chieftain added;

“Generally, economic activities have slowed down drastically and the consequent spiral effect of the malicious and ill-timed cash restriction policy has brought instant public anger and hatred against the ruling party and its candidates in the forthcoming elections.”

According to him, Mr Buhari’s regime risks mass demonstrations against the policy on the eve of the election or a mass boycott of the general election, and these can undermine public peace, the election and the nation’s hard-earned democracy.

The SDP spokesman urged Mr Buhari to extend the deadline for replacing the old naira notes for the new banknotes to June, as demanded by the National Assembly.

Mr Mohammed said the APC-led government must be focused on ensuring ease in cash flow so its citizens could transact businesses without malicious intentions, fear, rage and anger.

We’ll no longer tolerate containers falling off on roads -Lagos State government

The Lagos State government has condemned the incessant truck accidents within the state and warned owners and drivers of articulated vehicles against recklessness.

The permanent secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Abdulhafiz Toriola, said in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos that the state government had resolved not to tolerate unabated truck accidents caused by large containers falling off trucks which injure or kill residents going about their daily activities.

He said any driver or owner found to be an accomplice in any truck accident would be arrested and prosecuted.

He said this would be done in accordance with the State Transport Sector Reform Law (TSRL), 2018.

Mr Toriola said the warning became necessary following the recent truck accidents in the Ojuelegba and Ikotun areas, which claimed the lives of innocent citizens and left scores of people injured.

The permanent secretary said other truck accidents occurred on the Abule-Egba road and Odoyalaro (Maryland) Bridge, which fortunately were without casualties.

He said that the investigation revealed that the accidents mainly happened due to negligence and recklessness on the part of the drivers.

“Having carried out a critical forensic investigation on the causes of these accidents, the state government has resolved to evoke the full wrath of the laws stipulated in its Transport Sector Reform Law (TSRL), 2018, on the liability of owners for safety.

“The law clearly states that a person who drives a commercial vehicle whose condition does not conform to the provisions of the law commits an offence.

“The person is liable on conviction to the penalty stated in Section 18 (2) and in situations where the driver of the vehicle is not the owner, the owner will also be liable in line with Section 18 (3).

“The enforcement strategies to check the operations and activities of articulated vehicles plying the state roads is sacrosanct and will be enforced.

“The state government, having registered its displeasure and position on the current situation, sought the cooperation of all relevant Stakeholders in the implementation of the enforcement to erase needless deaths, enhance movement without fear on our roads and the safety of lives and property,” Mr Toriola said.

He commiserated with families who lost their loved ones in the recent accidents, assuring them that justice would be served.
