Commuters stranded as commercial drivers, Okada riders reject old naira notes in Ibadan

Commuters in Ibadan were, on Wednesday, stranded after commercial drivers, motorcyclists, and tricyclists refused to accept old naira notes.

The situation forced some commuters to trek long distances to their respective destinations, while those who could not simply returned home.

It was also observed that the roads in some areas within the metropolis, like Omi-Adio, Apata, Challenge and Mokola roundabout, were deserted as only a few commercial drivers collected the old naira notes.

The situation was further compounded by the protests that rocked some parts of the state capital over fuel and new notes scarcity.

A commercial bus driver, Mukaila Akanbi, said he refused to collect old naira notes because filling stations rejected old notes from him.

“If I collect old naira notes, how do I spend it? Unfortunately, most banks are not opening for business,” he said.

A trader, Alice Adebola, who boarded a bus and paid with an old naira note, said the driver rejected the money.

She appealed to the government to provide enough new naira notes before the situation escalates.

“Honestly, I don’t know what to do now. I took my wares to the market, but old notes were being given to me. If I reject it, I will not sell and be able to feed my family; nobody will collect it from me if I accept it.

However, a bean seller, Kabir Mohammed, who had many people milling around him for accepting old naira notes, said he decided to do so as a strategy to sell his wares.

“I decided to collect old naira notes with the hope of selling my wares, restocking and reselling again,” he said.

Mr Mohammed urged the government to save the situation by making new naira notes available or, in the alternative, allowing old notes to be accepted as legal tender to bridge the supply gap.

Iseke is a border community with Orsu local government area of Imo State, which had become a safe haven for gunmen operating in Imo State and parts of Ihiala in Anambra State.

It was gathered that the NYSC members, who had completed their three weeks orientation programme in Imo State, were travelling to Lagos when they were abducted by the hoodlums at a popular filling station along Onitsha- Owerri roay in Ihiala.

According to a source in the area, the vehicle conveying the corps members was forced to divert towards the dreaded Ihiala – Orlu road and ended up at Iseke where the gunmen held the corps members hostage.

Emefiele will frustrate Tinubu’s presidential ambition with naira scarcity, unfit as CBN governor- Governor Akeredolu

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has slammed Godwin Emefiele, the Central Bank of Nigeria governor, as unfit to remain in office for attempting to be the next president.

He will also frustrate the chances of the All Progressives Congress to win the February 25 presidential election with the persisting naira scarcity.

“We have said that this man (Mr Emefiele) should be removed when he contested to be president. The man (Mr Emefile) is not fit for that position (CBN governor),” Mr Akeredolu was quoted in a statement issued by his spokesman, Richard Olatunde, on Wednesday. “A man who attempted to be president will frustrate us at this time.”

Last week, the Ondo governor filed a suit at the Supreme Court challenging the CBN February 10 deadline for the N200, N500 and N1,000 banknotes to be legal tender, citing the untold hardship scarcity of the new notes have brought on people.

The governor, who spoke while playing host to Seyi Tinubu, Bola Tinubu’s son, who led members of the youth directorate of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, explained, “We have a problem we are facing in this country today.

Our rating as a party is not that favourable. Let’s not deceive ourselves. Must it be now that we will have this financial policy?”Mr Akeredolu added, “How, Fuel and everything? Things are not easy. This policy is not right at this time. It should be reversed. Reserve it and tell CBN that we are reversing it. Let old, and new notes co-exist.”

He lamented that Okada, taxis, and banks “are not taking old notes again. There is an injunction, and everyone is behaving like there is no injunction.”

According to the governor, the choice of Mr Tinubu as APC’s flag bearer for the February 25 poll was based on his competence and track records.

“We didn’t waver when we said that the presidency must come to the South, and when it got to the South, we didn’t waver. We said competence and track record are important,” stated Mr Akeredolu.

“Our choice of Asiwaju was premised on the informed decision, not because we are from the same tribe.”

The Red Hand Day is a reminder of the ongoing challenge to end the recruitment and use of children in armed conflicts.

“In Nigeria, there have been numerous reports of children being recruited and used by armed groups, with devastating consequences on their physical and psychological well-being.

The Nigerian government, in collaboration with the international community, has made considerable progress in improving legal and policy frameworks to protect children associated with armed actors,” it noted.

Court sentences man to death by hanging for armed robbery

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Monday sentenced a 20-year-old man, Nojeem Badmos, to death by hanging for armed robbery.

Delivering judgment, Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe, held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt, the ingredients of the two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and armed robbery.

Mrs Abike-Fadipe described the defendant’s account of the incident as inconsistent.

According to her, evidence of the prosecution witness, Adetokunbo Solomon (victim), were proven cogent and true. She held that the defendant in company of two others still at large did rob Solomon of his bag and other valuables early one morning as he stood at a bus stop on his way to work sometime in July 2019.

Mrs Abike-Fadipe said;

“On his way to work at the bus stop somewhere in Alagbado area of the state, noticed a motorcyclist carrying two passengers approaching him.

“He suspected danger and began to run but the two passengers on the bike came down and ran after him. He fell in the mud and the two others chased after him, caught up with him and beat him up.

Justice Abike-Fadipe said;

“In respect to the offence of conspiracy to commit robbery, I sentence you to 21 years jail term.

“In respect to armed robbery having being found guilty, you will be hanged on the neck until you are dead and may the Lord have mercy on you.”

Meanwhile, the judge told the defence counsel that the law was clear on the punishment of armed robbery, however, gave him an opportunity for his allocutus.

The defence counsel, Ajibade Benson, in his allocutus prayed for the court to be lenient as the defendant was a first time offender.

Prosecution counsel Adebanke Ogunde did not object to the judgement. Conspiracy and armed robbery contravenes the provisions of sections 299 and 297 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

Population commission to spend N400 billion on 2023 census: Official

The National Population Commission (NPC) says more than N400 billion has been earmarked for the 2023 Census.

Jick Lawrence, Head, NPC Public Affairs Department in Plateau, said this while presenting a paper at a capacity building workshop for journalists on effective reporting of census in Jos on Monday.

Mr Lawrence said that about N100 billion had so far been expended on preparations ahead of the April exercise.

“Over N400 billion has been earmarked to be expended on the 2023 census.

“About N100 billion has so far been expended on preparations ahead of the exercise, census is a very big and capital intensive exercise,” he said.

Mr Lawrence, who stressed that census had far reaching socio-economic gains, explained that some of the funds would go into the empowerment of about 1.5 million Nigerians.

He said those empowered would be paid monies ranging from N100,000 to N150,000 per person.

He added that 56,000 vehicles would be hired to enhance movement of personnel and materials, and about 800,000 Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), would be procured.

Mr Lawrence said that the reflation of the economy, through the circulation of cash transferred into the hands of functionaries and clients, who supply infrastructure and services, would add value to the economy.

He added that census was critical to development, and therefore, deserved critical attention.

Mr Lawrence said more items would be added to the questionnaires issued to households, which included ICT literacy, fertility and child survival, as well as deaths in the household in the last 12 months.

Others he said were difficulties in performing activities, sanitation, climate change, among others.

Buhari, CBN destroying lives, livelihoods with badly implemented naira policy: NECA

The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association has condemned the CBN’s poorly implemented new naira banknotes policy sanctioned by President Muhammadu Buhari, declaring it is ruining lives and livelihoods.

NECA urged the Buhari regime to look beyond the politics of the naira redesign and focus on the damaging effects on businesses and the economy at large. Its director-general, Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, made the call in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

In the last few weeks, with the cash squeeze and the purchasing ability of Nigerians greatly impaired by the poor implementation of the policy, the economy has witnessed a significant bashing.

This is so, with report stating that the Real sector witnessed about 40 per cent drop in productive activities,” explained Mr Oyerinde.

He added;

“As the cash crush continues, thousands of productive hours are lost daily on queues by employees and many cannot even get to work.

The value chain in the formal and informal sector with over N10 billion cash transaction daily is almost destroyed with consequences for employment, business sustainability and National development.”

The NECA director-general called for critical and immediate efforts to be made to improve or upgrade alternative routes to cash, thereby ensuring seamless transactions before going digital.

According to him, the series of actions taken by the CBN now in the form of having naira swap agents, among others, are afterthoughts, after resistance by Nigerians.

It is callous to deprive citizens of the new naira notes after cajoling them to deposit the old ones in the banks. We urge the CBN to sanction the commercial banks that have been found to be complicit in the whole show of shame, even as the CBN cannot extricate itself from being complicit,” stressed the NECA chief.

‘Mr Oyerinde further mentioned that “as an immediate action, we align with the position of the Council of State that the CBN should release more new naira notes into the economy or allow the use of the old ones, pending a time when it will demonstrate competence by not always putting the cart before the horse in the implementation of monetary policies.”

The NECA boss pointed out that the CBN naira redesign policy with the objectives as stated by the apex bank was laudable. He said, however, that like many of the bank’s policy initiatives, this was also flawed by shortsightedness in implementation.

For a definitive monetary policy as the naira design, it is expected that the CBN will not only take lessons from other countries like India, Myanmar, Australia, Venezuela, Zimbabwe and the European Union, which witnessed various degrees of successes and failures when they implanted their currency redesign,” said the NECA director-general, urging CBN to do a “thorough analysis and simulation of likely social and economic challenges that might arise and definitive response to those challenges.”

He further stated that “it does not seem that the CBN understands the challenges, nor have solutions to the economic issues, thereby allowing speculators and economic saboteurs to have a field day at the expense of legitimate businesses and the economy.”

Catholic bishops decry naira scarcity, tell Buhari to review CBN policy

Lucius Ugorji, president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) on Sunday urged President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime to review the new CBN cash policy to ease Nigerians’ hardships.

Mr Ugorji made the appeal at the opening of the 2023 First Plenary of CBCN held at the Catholic Secretariat in Abuja.

While expressing sadness over the situation, Mr Ugorji said the policy had resulted into debilitating cash crunch and frustration among Nigerians.

The CBCN president advised politicians to stop engaging in mudslinging, acrimony, arson, buying and selling of votes, threats, intimidation and violence ahead of the general elections.

Mr Ugorji said instead of dissipating energy on negativity, those aspiring for political offices should concentrate on marketing their manifestoes.

He also advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to be above board and ensure that the election process is beyond reproach.

“The elections, if well conducted, can be a turning point in our political and economic history. We, therefore, urge all to play their roles maturely and creditably during the period of the general elections,” stated Mr Ugorji.

He added;

“Any candidate who is prepared to shed blood or to spend huge sums of money to buy votes or to compromise INEC shows that he or she is seeking political office for pure self-aggrandisement.”

He reminded Catholics of their civic and moral responsibility of voting during elections.

The president of Christian Association of Nigeria, Daniel Okoh, commended the CBCN for always speaking truth to power.

Mr Okoh said CAN had registered with INEC to observe the forthcoming elections and had trained 1,200 observers.

He explained that the international observers from the All African Conference of Churches would also observe the elections.

“This will be our modest contribution in ensuring a free, fair and credible election in Nigeria this year,” the CAN president said.

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Ignatius Kaigama, in his homily advised Nigerians to make informed choices during the elections.

“With our votes in the coming weeks, we can either choose a reasonable and productive use of power towards unity, security, a good economy or just abandon our fate in the hands of people who have neither capacity nor conscience,” Mr Kaigama said.

Father of dead Chrisland School student demands justice

The father of a 12-year-old student of Chrisland School Lagos, Whitney Adeniran, who slumped during the school’s inter-house sport games.

Whitney died on Thursday, February 9 after she slumped at the Agege Stadium venue of the school’s games.

Micheal Adeniran, in a viral social media post, demanded justice for the death of his daughter. He maintained that his daughter was healthy and without any sickness or condition when she left home for the event on Thursday.

He said the school management refused to inform his wife who was present at the event and she only got to find out about the incident after a teacher told her that her daughter “slumped.”

Mr Adeniran said his wife called to inform him that their daughter had slumped and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

He added that his daughter was taken to a health centre instead of a hospital and his wife was informed by the nurse at the facility that their daughter had “died.”

“I asked questions about what happened to my daughter and the school authority could not get me any information as to what happened to my child in their care,” Mr Adeniran said.

“I gave Chrisland school a healthy, vibrant young girl. What Chrisland returned to me is a dead child. My entire family is in deep sorrow but the school authorities claim they know nothing about my daughter’s death and all they know is that my daughter slumped and died.”

While reacting to the accusation in a statement issued on Sunday, Chrisland School management said they had informed her parents on January 20 that their daughter had complained about her health and she was taken home by her father for proper health care.

The school said on the day of the incident, “Whitney slumped in public view and not under any hidden circumstances whatsoever.”

It added that she was taken to the nearest medical facility where the doctor on duty “administered oxygen and every aid possible on her.”

Chrisland management demanded that an autopsy be performed on the body before her burial.

“Even as her family made funeral plans for an immediate burial, we differed politely and reiterated the need to establish a scientific verification of the underlying cause of death as mandatorily required in circumstances like this.

“We immediately notified regulatory stakeholders and agencies to allow for a comprehensive evaluation and assessment of the developments,” the statement said.

“In spite of the compelling imperatives to fill any information gaps in public space, we stopped short of making any media sensation out of this because the diseased in question was a minor and is deserving of our unqualified respect.

We also prioritised according respect to the privacy of the family and were with them consistently to mourn together.”

Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson for the state said the case is being investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department and an autopsy will be carried out on the deceased to know the cause of her untimely death.
