FCMB SCANDAL: MOYO’S STATEMENTS

The wife of late Tunde Thomas, Moyo, in a statement on Friday laid to rest paternity concerns over her children, saying the deceased was their father.

Mrs Thomas said she refrained from commenting on the issue to preserve the memories of her late husband Tunde who died on December 16, 2020.

Recall that there had been controversy over why Moyo, a former banker left her husband and relocated to the United States in 2017.

The controversy led to media reports alleging that she was into a romantic relationship with the Managing Director of the FCMB, Adam Nuru.

This is the first time Moyo spoke since the scandal went viral on social media.

Below are key things she said in a statement issue:

1. She said on no occasion “did I ever tell him he was not the father of our two children.”

2. According to her, it is  deliberate falsehood and certainly malicious to allege and insinuate that she informed him that the children are not his.

3. The children still bear his name.

4. “It is not in my place, or anyone’s place to play God and talk with certainty as to the cause of his death, without proven medical facts.”

5. She said she’s preserving the memories of her late husband, “not only to me, but to his children, who are still young, and to everybody who had a relationship with him.”

6. Mrs Moyo said they had many differences in their marriage with some leading to the intervention of the Police.

7. She claimed Tunde still had conversations with the children like any father will, “up until his sudden and unfortunate death.”

I ENCOURAGE NIGERIANS NOT TO IGNORE THIS MESSAGE!!!

It is high time for those with high temparament to be extra-careful. Every Nigerian knows that we are in a period of frustrations, depressions, confusions, terror, stresses and the likes. All these increase the risk of high BP which also consequently leads to heart failure or attack.

Of course, we don’t expect sudden death, which is now rampant. Please move away from being provoked easily by your kids, friends, husbands and wives. Avoid reacting to things aggressively. Isolate yourself from disturbances.

Avoid too much thinking when there is no salary or food at home, just imagine it’s on the way coming and keep calm. Avoid exchange of words with people at home, markets, offices, chambers etc. Always check your BP, take drugs, follow instructions, and exercises.

Avoid cholesterol foods. Go to see your doctor immediately if you feel changes in your body, especially chest. May God protect us. Stay in peace and never fight anyone. Your health is far better than anything worldly.

Finally, beware of transferred aggression.

The Governor further directed that a fresh process that would terminate in 45 days should commence immediately.

This was contained in a statement by Sanwo-Olu’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, on Friday titled, ‘Sanwo-Olu cancels ongoing appointment of LASU VC, orders fresh process’.

It stated that the governor’s “decision on the cancellation came after a thorough investigation and stakeholders engagement, which were necessitated by various petitions against the selection process”.

The statement added, “Governor Sanwo-Olu was inundated with petitions arising from the selection process of the Vice-Chancellor by the Governing Council. After a thorough evaluation and investigation of the various complaints, Mr. Governor, in his capacity as the Visitor to the University ordered the cancellation of the process.

LASU students protest fees hike, demand immediate reversal to old fees

Two days to exit of Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun as the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, having completed his five-year-single tenure, the students of the university have expressed their displeasure over the recent increment in school fees, demanding a reversal to the old fees within two weeks from today, Friday.

The students said they had been gravely disturbed since the fees were increased and consequently all along been engaging all relevant authorities in and outside the university to actualise a reversal of the fees with the efforts yielded no positive results till today.

They named those they had engaged to include the management team led by the outgoing vice-chancellor, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Education, Mr Wahab Tokunbo and the Chairman, Lagos House Committee on Education, Mr Olayinka Ogundimu among others.

The university was on Friday, December 11, announced the increment of its tuition fees from N25, 000 to N67, 048.50 (representing 168 per cent increment) and to be applicable only to fresh students and those to be admitted subsequently.

However, the students under the aegis of Students’ Union Government and in a statement signed by their President AbdulBasit Ashade and Public Relations Officer, Zeenab Adams, said the union is primarily concerned about the welfare of members and would continue to project same for actualisation in a peaceful manner.

The students said they quite understood the economic pressure the fees hike would have on the parents, guardians as well as the students themselves, especially as regards the already harsh economic effects of COVID-19 that people are still grappling with.

They vowed that the union would stop at nothing in ensuring the increment is properly reviewed as this is a very challenging time in the country and that “we must be sensitive not to compound this burden on indigenes and residents of Lagos State.”

The students said the primary purpose of establishing LASU is to impact and impart value in indigenes and residents of the state for a better Lagos and therefore the authorities should reverse the fees within 14 days from today, January 8, 2020, to an old fee.

The students said pending expiration of 14 days, it is expected that the management team, members of the governing council, state government officials and other relevant stakeholders would have met to proffer solution to the increment.

The union, therefore, said “Payment of school fees by newly admitted students should be suspended and portal for payment closed until a resolution is jointly reached by all parties and also directive is given by the Students’ Union body to continue the payment of their school fees.

Reacting to the matter, the school management said the university had no option than to increase the fees as it had done because of what it called the increasing huge financial responsibilities before it.

The Coordinator of Centre for Information Press and Public Relations of the university, Mr Ademola Adekoya, who reacted on behalf of the university via a statement made available to newsmen, insisted that the increment was a decision jointly taken by all the stakeholders in the university including the students and various staff unions and that the increment is applicable only to newly admitted students for the 2020\2021 and those that would come after them.

He said the increment became necessary for the university to be able to meet the increasing financial obligations that would further lead to its progress.

LASU is currently the second-best university in Nigeria queuing behind the University of Ibadan as rated by the Times Higher Education in its latest world universities ranking and the university is also one of the universities in the country that have highest numbers of candidates seeking university admission.

Adekoya said the state government as the proprietor could not all alone raise enough funds to sustain let alone improve the quality of services being delivered by the university and that has earned it second-best university status in the country.

He said the university had maintained the old fees for many years and would not be able to cope again on its mandates satisfactorily should it retain the old fees.

He said every student of LASU irrespective of course of study is now being engaged in rigorous training on one entrepreneurial skill or the other that would equip them to stand on their own economically even before graduation.
“So, the increment is inevitable and therefore should be seen as a necessary step to further consolidate the quality of education being offered by the university,” he stressed

Adeyemo who issued a statement announcing the death of the late basketball coach who was the Manager of Falcons on different occasions before he was appointed the club’s technical director, said that Onishola passed on at the age of 71 following a brief illness.

He said: “We are very sad by this unfortunate incident. In fact, we can’t find the right word to describe this moment.

“Coach Onishola was the symbol of basketball in Kwara State; he was one of the most brilliant coaches of the game in Nigeria.

“The entire basketball family extends its deepest condolences to the deceased’s family and loved ones.”

Onishola’s sister, Orisabunmi, who came to the limelight for her starring role in the blockbuster Yoruba movie, “Arelu” in 1987 died after a brief illness at her residence in Ibadan, Oyo State, about two days ago.

FG warns public against using Lagos Airport Road Flyover

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mr Olukayode Popoola, on Friday advised the public to stay off Airport Road Flyover in Lagos dangerously burnt by fire, pending the determination of its structural safety.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bridge which runs over Toyota Bus Stop on the Apapa-Oshodi-Ojota-Oworonshoki Expressway being reconstructed, was engulfed by fire when a petrol tanker burst into flames on Thursday.

The federal and Lagos State governments on Friday carried out a joint inspection to know the extent of damage to the bridge and adjoining roads.

Leading the state and federal officials, Popoola raised concerns over the safety of the bridge, saying that its structural integrity had yet to be ascertained.

He told NAN during the inspection that samples were being taken from the burnt bridge for analysis to be able to ascertain the level of damage and where to carry out repairs.

Popoola said that 200 meters of the rigid pavement of the Apapa-Oshodi-Ojota-Oworonshoki Expressway reconstruction project, being carried by the Dangote Group, was burnt.

He added that the deck of the flyover was burnt and its pier badly damaged, raising fears of structural instability of the bridge.

The controller said that the bridge was barricaded after the fire because of safety concerns, regretting that the barriers were removed at night.

Popoola warned that there would be risks in using the bridge.

“We are taking some samples to go and analyse before we know the structural stability, but physically, a lot of damage has been done to this pier of the bridge.

“The integrity is already compromised.

“Yesterday the road was barricaded but in the night, some people went and removed the barricade.

“We are advising that members of the public should not take the risk of using this bridge,” he said.

Popoola said that about 200 meters of the bridge deck as well as the pavement of Apapa-Oshodi-Ojota-Oworonshoki Expressway being reconstructed was affected by the inferno.

He added that one of the piers – pillars of the bridge – was badly burnt, making the ministry unsure of the structural integrity and safety of the bridge.

He said that outcome of tests would ensure appropriate action on the flyover constructed by Julius Berger Plc, as well as the highway under reconstruction by the Dangote Group.

According to the controller, the Federal Highway Act empowers the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to prosecute whoever caused damage to assets of the Federal Government.

“This Apapa-Oshodi-Ojota-Oworonshoki Expressway project is ongoing, and we have not even completed it. Now, due to carelessness of drivers, this fire occurred, and you can see the level of the damage.

“The pavement that we have spent a lot of money, up to 200 meters – have been affected; that will cost a lot of money,” he said.

Popoola noted that the ministry had been working in collaboration with Lagos State Government to tackle trucks’ menace and other infractions affecting road infrastructure.

The Special Adviser to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Works and Infrastructure, Mrs Aramide Adeyoye, said that the state government, through its Ministry of Transportation, would embark on strict enforcement of road worthiness regulation.

She told NAN that the government’s agents would begin to enter depots and loading bays for petrol tankers to ensure that those not road worthy would not lift petroleum products.

Adeyoye said that truck accident causing damage to road infrastructure had become recurrent.

“Oftentimes, they claim that the roads are bad. What do you say about this one now that the road is very good, there is no pothole anywhere,” she said.

Adeyoye said that truck accidents were most times caused by reckless driving.

She called for attitudinal change.

She said that fires caused by tanker accidents had caused much hardship on road users, urging that road unworthy trucks should stop coming into Lagos State.

She said that the support of the Federal Government was important in tackling the ‘hydra-headed monster’.

Mr Cyril Zango, Deputy Corps Commander (Operations), Lagos Sector Command of the Federal Roads Safety Corps, said the offending truck had been impounded.

He said that investigations were on as regards the accident, adding that, if found guilty, the owner and the driver of the tanker would be prosecuted to serve as deterrent to other road users.

Zango said that articulated vehicle drivers engaged sharp practices to evade checks.

Rivers lawyers to protest over electricity bills

Hundreds of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company customers who are mainly lawyers, on Thursday, stormed the Port Harcourt office of the company to express their displeasure over what they described as “exorbitant estimated bills” adding that they have also sent a petition to the Rivers state House of Assembly seeking their intervention in record time.

The angry electricity customers threatened to embark on a protest if the lawmakers failed to call officials of the electricity distribution company to order and address their plight.

One of the protesters who only gave his name as Mark said despite the epileptic power supply they get in each month, they receive huge bills.

He said, “Imagine a flat would be paying bills of N32,000 to N37,000 even in the absence of copious electrical appliances.

“You can imagine power would be supplied for less than 30 minutes and it would be seized. We don’t even have any access to them to make our complaints. At the end of the month, exorbitant bills are given to us.”

Another angry customer said even when there is an electrical fault, the distribution company continues to send bills to them, adding that her letter of complaint was not replied to.

“PHED officials just distribute bills without reading the metres, sometimes there won’t be light when our fuse is unplugged, yet they are still bringing bills, I have written to them, but till date, they have not responded to my letter.

“Because soon we’ll hit the streets and have a nationwide protest especially in Rivers state.”

Efforts to get the response of the PHED’s acting Manager, Corporate Communications, Chioma Aninwe, proved abortive, as she did not respond to calls and a text message sent to her phone.
