SON closes down steel factories in Ikorodu

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has shut down two steel plants in Ikorodu area of Lagos State for producing substandard iron rods.

On Tuesday, the SON task force team raided Ikorodu companies and discovered four trucks filled with defective goods.

President of the Iron Rod Distributors Association of Nigeria (IRDAN), Gbenga Awoyale, welcomed the SON task force’s efforts to crackdown on firms who manufacture substandard items.

The inferior steel goods from the facilities, according to Awoyale, were linked to a distributor’s store in the Alimosho area of the state.

The raid reaffirms our confidence in SON to spare no efforts in sanitising the manufacturing sector and ensure Nigerians have access to only quality products.

While commending the unusual stride of the SON, Awoyale further demanded justice in prosecution of the culprits.

“This will serve as a deterrent to other manufacturers who form the habit of producing substandard products for Nigeria markets, while producing high-quality products for exports,” Awoyale said.

Awoyale also asked the SON director-general to utilize his position to reassure Nigerians that no one is above the law by ensuring thorough prosecution in compliance with the SON Act 14 of 2015.

OUR MCM FOR TODAY IS SKEPTA.

Skepta also known as Joseph Junior Adenuga was born to Nigerian parents on 19 September 1982 in Tottenham, North London He is the eldest of four children; fellow musician Jme, radio presenter Julie and graphic designer Jason.

Skepta was originally a DJ from Tottenham-based grime collective Meridian Crew. The Meridian Crew performed ‘sets’ or sessions on pirate radio (most notably Heat FM 96.6) where fellow crew members sometimes referred to him as “Scoopa Daniels”. Early in his career, Skepta released instrumentals including “DTI (Pirate Station Anthem)” and “Private Caller”.

Skepta began MCing shortly before Meridian Crew disbanded in 2005, after which Skepta, alongside his brother Jme, joined Roll Deep for a short period of time before becoming founding members of Boy Better Know in 2006. Skepta was convinced to begin MCing by Wiley after his records were taken away from him by the police. Following the formation of Boy Better Know, Skepta clashed with fellow MC Devilman for the DVD Lord of the Mics 2, in what is remembered as one of the biggest clashes in grime history. Shortly after the clash, Skepta released a mixtape entitled “Joseph Junior Adenuga”. Skepta publicly released his debut album Greatest Hits on 17 September 2007, on his label Boy Better Know.

Skepta self-released the first single “Rolex Sweep” in September 2008 and reached number 89 on the UK Singles Chart. Skepta then released the album Microphone Champion on 1 June 2009. He then also released single “Too Many Man” with Jme, Wiley, Frisco and Shorty, which went to chart at number 79. Skepta has released five singles off his third studio album Doin’ It Again (first with a major label), titled “Bad Boy”, “Rescue Me”, “Cross My Heart” featuring Preeya Kalidas, “So Alive” and “Amnesia”, as well as a video for the Hello Good Morning (Grime Remix). Three singles charted in the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart, with “Rescue Me” being the most successful at number 14. “Cross My Heart” came in at number 31 and dropped out of the Top 40 a week later. Doin’ It Again spent 3 weeks in the top 100 album charts and debuted and peaked at number 19 on its first week of release. In 2011, Skepta caused a controversy by releasing a hardcore music video of his single “All Over the House”.

In 2012, Skepta released two singles from his fourth forthcoming album. Both “Hold On” and “Make Peace Not War” were Top 40 charting singles in the UK but were a departure from Skepta’s usual sound. Skepta’s second major label album was intended to be released in the fourth quarter of 2011, entitled The Honeymoon but was delayed till 2012. After a disappointing response from the first two singles Skepta decided to release a purchasable mixtape, titled Blacklisted. It was released on 2 December 2012 along with music videos to support the release prior to the release.

In March 2014, Skepta provided a verse for the remix of “German Whip” by Meridian Dan, and in the same month, he released his new single, “That’s Not Me”, featuring his brother Jme, peaking at number 21 on the UK charts. The single’s music video won the award for Best Video at the 2014 MOBO Awards. Upon receiving the award, Skepta stated that the video cost him £80. In late 2014, Skepta released another single titled “It Ain’t Safe” featuring ASAP Bari. This was followed in early 2015 with “Shutdown”, as well as features on “Red Eye to Paris” by Flatbush Zombies and the remix of “Ojuelegba” by Wizkid, also featuring Drake. Skepta and others joined Kanye West at a surprise show in London, performing numerous songs together during a shared set. He was also named one of GQ’s 50 best dressed British men in 2015.

In an interview it stated that Skepta’s making his acting debut in 2015 film Anti-Social, released initially in May.On 14 February 2016 Skepta released “Ladies Hit Squad” featuring grime artist D Double E and American rapper ASAP Nast, of the New York-based ASAP Mob. Through a post on Instagram, Skepta announced that his album, Konnichiwa was due to be released on 6 May 2016. Konnichiwa became Grime’s highest charting album, peaking at number 2 in the UK music charts. Konnichiwa features songs such as “That’s Not Me”, “Shutdown” and “Man”. The release of Konnichiwa was celebrated with a launch party on 5 May 2016 held in Tokyo and live streamed on Boiler Room, featuring a live performance of the entire album by Skepta and supporting performances from Japanese trap artists Kohh, Dutch Montana, Loota, and DJ Riki.

Skepta began his “Banned From America” two-part, 14-show tour on 16 April 2017 at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which covered cities throughout the United States and Europe. The tour was named as such in reference to Skepta’s forced cancellation of his 2016 “No Fear” American tour in support of Konnichiwa, when his application for a visa to enter the United States was denied.

Skepta released his Vicious EP on 31 October 2017, with songs featuring ASAP Rocky, Lil B, and Section Boyz. In the summer of 2017, rumours on the underground dance scene suggested an imminent collaboration between Skepta and drum’n’bass pioneer Goldie. This was confirmed in Goldie’s 2017 memoir All Things Remembered, which refers to him having done a track with Skepta. It has not yet been released.

Skepta featured on ASAP Rocky’s “Praise the Lord (Da Shine)”, which was released in May 2018. The single charted on the Billboard Hot 100. Also in May, Skepta released his single “Pure Water”, which peaked at number 78 in the UK.[31] He followed this in June with “Energy (Stay Far Away)” with Wizkid, which reached number 59. In December 2019 he appeared as himself in a Grand Theft Auto Online expansion as a radio host with Danny Brown. Brown also lent his voice to another fictional character in the game. He also collaborated with Gorillaz and Tony Allen on the song “How Far?” in May 2020.

On 4 April 2018, he was installed as a chief in his Nigerian hometown in Ogun State, receiving the chieftaincy title of the Amuludun of Odo-Aje.

In July 2018, Skepta revealed he was going to become a father via his Instagram account, and posted a picture of an ultrasound scan. In December he posted a photo of him bottle-feeding the infant, who was revealed to be called River. The next month, he posted a photo of his baby daughter.

“An anonymous person is sending me death threats for the past 2 months” – Eniola Badmus cries out.

Plus-sized Nollywood actress, Eniola Badmus has not relent as she continues to cry out on the several death threats received in her dm via Instagram.

Badmus who has been complaining to her followers for the past two months has disclosed that whoever is behind this vile act would be dealt with by the full weight of the law.
In an interview with Sunday Scoop, Badmus said, “The person (sending the death threats) is anonymous and I have been getting his messages for two months. The person has never made any demand of me. The messages say that they would kill me whenever they see me and that anytime I come to Amen Estate (Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos), they would kill me there. However, the Instagram page of this unknown person has been reported and pulled down. I am not really scared because God has not given me the spirit of fear. It is just one of those things that happen. I hope that God exposes whoever is behind this.
“I kept quiet initially because I did not take him seriously. I assumed that he was not okay mentally. I am not owing anyone, so I don’t know where the threat is coming from. This is about the first time that I would be getting a death threat. I have made an official report to the police and they are working on it already. I don’t want to divulge too much information about their plans. I believe that whoever is behind the threat would be brought to book someday.”

Badmus also stated that she regarded the threat as one of the prices she had to pay for being in the limelight.
She added, “My sister has been very worried about the threat. When it comes to anything that has to do with me, my family members are always concerned. They were scared and they made sure that we got a lawyer and the police involved. Perhaps, those are some of the prices that one pays for being in the limelight.  If I was not in the public glare or in the entertainment industry, I don’t think anybody would threaten me this way.”

Nigerian, Uruemu Adejinmi becomes first black African woman elected as Mayor in Ireland

A Nigerian woman, Uruemu Adejinmi, has emerged the first African and the first black female to be elected as Mayor in the Republic of Ireland.

With her new election as Cathaoirleach of the Longford Municipal District, she also becomes the first female African mayor in the country, Irish Times reports.

Reacting to her victory, Adejinmi who is the current Councilor of Fianna Fail, said in a statement that she was deeply honoured to assume the new position.

This is a historic day for Longford and I am delighted to share this moment with my family and friends.

I look forward to working with my council colleagues, council exec and all stakeholders to continue the growth and development of our municipal area and county,” she added.

After migrating from Nigeria to Longford in 2003, Adejinmi in 2016 joined Fianna Fail before assuming the post of local councilor in 2020.

She attributes her involvement in politics to her neighbour who asked her to join Fianna Fail saying, “If it wasn’t for my neighbour asking me to join his party, I wouldn’t have considered politics.”

Speaking to the Irish Times on the challenges faced by migrants who try to get involved in politics, Adejinmi admonished political parties to “engage more actively” with migrants, noting that, “there is no shortage of talent in the migrant community but there is a shortage of community leaders from migrant backgrounds.”

The Masters of Business Administration holder from Athlone Institute of Technology highlighted jobs and housing as her key priorities.

“I am hoping to lobby for an influx of industry. Hopefully businesses will take a look at starting in Longford and that would help a lot of people who are leaving or commuting because of the lack of jobs,” she said.

Family Of Murdered Super TV CEO To Nigerians: Don’t Worsen Our Plight, Let Police Do Their Work.

The family of Usifo Ataga, Super TV CEO, who was allegedly killed by a 300-level student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Chidinma Ojukwu, has demanded privacy, asking those who have useful information to reach the police.

Chidinma and Ataga had reportedly lodged in a service apartment in the Lekki area of Lagos State and the corpse of the latter was discovered the next day in the room and the former fled, thus raising suspicion of her complicity in his death.

The police said they went after her and tracked her down at her father’s Alagomeji, Yaba residence.

Upon her arrest, Chidinma attributed her action to the influence of hard drugs and alcohol.

After the interview she granted on Friday, different posts and stories started circulating on social media.

The majority of those who commented mocked the Ataga family, especially his wife.

In a statement signed by one Dr Isi Ataga, the family demanded privacy, asking those who have useful information to reach the police.

They thanked the police for arresting the suspect but said there were many unanswered questions.

The statement read, “Here are the facts. A little over a week ago, unknown persons savagely killed our beloved son, Usifo Ataga. With no regard for him, or his family, who love him, they viciously ended his life.

“His children will grow up to read unkind, thoughtless words from thousands of people who have joined the lynching party in the press and the blogosphere. Our aging parents must now struggle to pick up the pieces amid a cacophony of misinformation propagated by strangers.

“A suspect has been arrested and paraded before the press. We, the Ataga Family, are grateful to the Nigeria Police for pursuing this investigation. However, like you, we have many unanswered questions. Some things don’t add up.

“If you have any information, don’t hide behind online posts. Instead, come forward and share it with the Police.

“Here’s what we do know. The more you add to the false information in the press and on social media, the harder it is for the Nigeria Police to do their work and fully solve this case. The harder it is for a grieving family to recover from the loss of their beloved son.

“We ask, sincerely, that you let us grieve this terrible loss with some privacy. This past week and a half has been the worst period of our lives.”

The Police Public Relations Officer Ekiti Command, ASP Sunday Abutu, said the command was still studying the reports.

He said they will officially react to it once issues about the kidnapped are verified.

The incident made him to become the third traditional ruler to be kidnapped in less than three months.

God has rejected Obasanjo and Buhari, the solution lies with one man – Prophet Adebayo

Prophet Segun Adebayo of Christ Apostolic Church, says that God has rejected former President Olusegun Obasanjo, because when he had an opportunity to clean up the mess in the country in 1999, he failed to use his opportunity.

According to the cleric, God had also rejected President Muhammadu Buhari and he could foresee a crisis in northern Nigeria, saying the only man with a solution is one of the conveners of the Yoruba nation agitation, Prof Banji Akintoye.

According to SaharaReporters, Adeboye made the declarations in an interview published by Asabeafrika on Thursday

Speaking in Yoruba, the prophet said Obasanjo was disobedient to God and “the grace has left him”.

The Lord sent the hosts of heaven with many swords. The swords have not gone back. There will be a crisis in the North; the people of Buhari will be no more. Where is the generation of Murtala Mohammed?

“Obasanjo was a beloved of God but he was disobedient. The grace has left him. When he got there in 1999 was when he was given the opportunity. That was when we gave Obasanjo the grace to rectify what was wrong. And we told him, he did not listen. What they wanted to eat did not let them listen.

“Solution will not come from him again. I am praying for Baba Akintoye – Prof Banjo Akintoye. I saw that they gave him a solution. That was why I said Sunday Igboho and Gani Adams should not fight each other.

What God sent Igboho to do is what he is doing. Let Gani Adams not let people push him. I called Baba Akintoye and I told him that he should warn Sunday Igboho to be wary of the people around him.

They should not let kings and politicians divide you and Igboho. You are the ones that God will give the glory in this struggle. It is he who ends the struggles that we will say well done to,” he said.

Frenchwoman who killed abusive husband reportedly faints in disbelief during court after hearing she could walk free.

A Frenchwoman who admitted to killing her abusive husband, fainted with apparent shock in court on Friday, June 25, after hearing that she could walk free.

According to a lawyer for the accused, the prosecution has asked for a sentence of five years in prison for Valerie Bacot, with four years of the term suspended.
If confirmed, Bacot would walk free, as she has already spent a year in detention, her lawyer, Nathalie Tomasini, told French press.

Bacot admitted to shooting Daniel Polette in 2016. She previously referred to him as her stepfather before they married.
According to court documents, Polette had started raping her when she was only 12 or 13.

At that time he was her mother’s boyfriend, he later became Bacot’s husband and father of their four children.

Tomasini told French media, BFM on Friday that she was “about to plead leniency” and was not expecting this “at all.”

“Because she was in detention for a year, she would not be going back if the jury and the court follow the opinion of the prosecution,” the lawyer added.

After she heard the news, Bacot fainted and emergency services had to come into the courtroom.

Before today’s unexpected news, she was potentially facing a life sentence for shooting Polette dead.

In her bestselling book “Tout Le Monde Savait” (“Everyone Knew”), published in May, Bacot, 40, said Polette, 65, first raped her when she was 12 years old, impregnated her at 17 and went on to abuse her over the course of 18 years.

“I simply wanted to protect myself. Protect my life, the life of my children. In my eyes, nothing else ever mattered,” she wrote in her autobiography.

In her book, Bacot ?said she should be punished. But she argued that killing Polette was the only way to protect herself and her children from a man who had made her life “hell” from the time he first raped her until she shot him dead in 2016.

“I am not only a victim. I killed him; it is only normal that I should be punished. But if my sentence is heavy, that will mean to me that he had the right to behave the way he behaved with me,” Bacot wrote. ?

Before today’s news, a petition seeking Bacot’s freedom, launched by a support group in January, had gathered more than 705,000 signatures.

I am 52 and still single with no children, yet I didn’t die – Female pastor advises youths to relax

Head Pastor of Purpose Centre Church, Reverend Jacqueline Othoro, has narrated how she defied societal pressure and remained single despite being 52 years old.

She said that she is okay even if it lasts for her entire life, adding that “I can’t control someone coming into my life”.

The female pastor from Kenya then urged young people to stop going beyond their means to please society.

According to her, certain milestones perceived as parameters for success by society are pushing the youth into doing all sorts of things to fake a good image of themselves.

The cleric cited the perception that getting married or attaining financial prosperity by age 30 as some of the pressures that young people have had to grapple with.

“We are putting a lot of pressure on younger people. There are people who will hire a car for the weekend just to be seen driving so that people can see that they have a car,” she asserted while speaking on NTV’s show Your World.

Reverend Othoro boasted about being 52 years old and was still single and childless, saying what matters to her most is the fact that she is still alive and has lost nothing as a result of the singleness or childlessness.

She disclosed that growing up, she planned to get married by age 28 but although her dream never came to pass, it didn’t compel her to go above and beyond to please anyone.

I am 52 years old, still single and with no children. I am alive and that’s critical. I had a goal to get married by 28, I am 52 now and still single, I didn’t die or lose anything. Learn to be flexible with goals that you can’t control, I can’t control someone coming into my life,” she said.

Bandits invade barracks in Kaduna, steal cows owned by army officers

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have invaded the military barracks of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State, and carted away a herd of cattle in the early hours of Thursday.

The incident happened around 2:00 am as the gunmen arrived at the barracks and started shooting sporadically in the air to cause panic in the Army community.

Though the exact number of the cattle stolen could not be determined, an eyewitness told SaharaReporters on Thursday evening that the cows would not be less than a hundred in number based on previous experience.

According to the source who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, the cattle were owned by Army officers.

He, therefore, expressed shock that the barracks could be so porous for bandits to attack without any form of resistance.

The source told SaharaReporters the first time it happened was last year and that about 400 cows were taken away by the bandits in what he described as a bloodless attack on the barracks.

Around 2:00 am on Thursday, gunmen invaded where cattle are kept at Jaji barracks in Kaduna here. Those cattle are owned by some military officers. So, they are kept at the Mammy market, inside the barracks at Jaji here. I cannot tell you the number of cows taken by these bandits but before the operation, they were shooting sporadically in the air.

“Even the people outside the barracks heard the gunshots. And this was not the first time. The first time it happened was last year. That one happened close to the Firing Range. They went there and took away all the cattle. About 400 cows were taken away. Some of them (cows) managed to come back to their ranch,” the source said.

When asked if the bandits came with a truck or any vehicle to convey the cattle, the eyewitness said they did not drive any truck.

He said they took the cattle away on foot.

He also lamented that both the military personnel and civilians living in the barracks and the areas surrounding the military base are no longer safe.

“They didn’t come with any vehicle. They would just come on foot and push the cattle away. This is telling us that one day, even, the Army officers in the barracks can be kidnapped. And the barracks are one of the most strategic barracks in the country.

“In the barracks there, there are houses that even foreign Army officers that are taking courses live in. The Jaji barracks are among the largest in the country and if this kind of thing is happening there, that means we are not safe anymore.

There was a time even military officers from African and Asian countries came for courses there. Majors and Captains do come there from different countries. Every graduation, you will notice that about 17 African countries participate. It means that even foreign officers can be abducted. And if this happens, it is a slap on the face of the country.

“I don’t know if the military authorities are doing anything to see how they can tackle the issue. What I want you to know is that even the immediate areas surrounding the barracks are being attacked daily, and nothing is done. Outside the cantonment, barely a kilometre away is not safe,” he said.

How I stabbed Super TV CEO to death, 21-year-old UNILAG student speaks

A 21-year-old undergraduate of the University of Lagos who simply identified herself as Chidinma has narrated how she stabbed the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, to death in the Lekki area of Lagos State.
She spoke at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja on Thursday after she was paraded as a suspect by the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu.
Odumosu said Chidinma was arrested at her parents’ residence in the Yaba area of the state on Wednesday night.
Chidinma, a 300-level student of Mass Communication, said she had been in a romantic relationship with Ataga for about four months before the ugly incident.
Chidinma said she and Ataga were “having fun” when an argument broke out and she stabbed him twice.
The undergraduate also disclosed that after stabbing the late CEO, she withdrew N380,000 from his account using his ATM card.
While the owner of the rented apartment where the tragic incident took place had been arrested, Odumosu also said Ataga’s account had been blocked to prevent further withdrawals from it by those taking advantage of his untimely death to deplete the account.

My father drugged, exploited me – Britney Spears makes shocking revelation

Popular Popstar, Britney Spears has made shocking revelations and allegations against her father and members of her team during a bombshell court testimony.

Spears accused her father and team of drugging and forcing her to work against her will, exploiting her financially.
The singer said this during a rare virtual court appearance, demanding to end the conservatorship she’s been under for 13 years.
She told the presiding judge Brenda Penny of how she has been denied access to her phone, passport, credit cards and forced to work long hours.
She said: “Court I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive.
“I’ve been denied access to her own cell phone, credit card, drivers license and passport in a move for them to control me, sex trafficking is the only similar thing to this situation they subjected me to.”
Spears also claimed she was put on lithium, which made her feel drunk and rendered her unable to have a conversation with her parents.
Spears told the judge that the situation has led to depression as she intends to get married and have a baby, but has been denied access to the doctor in order to have her IUD removed so she can get pregnant.
“This conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good.
“I would like to be able to share my story to the world instead of it being a hush-hush secret.
“I’ve lied and told the world I’m alright and I’m happy. It’s all a lie.
“I’m telling you the truth now, I am not happy. I cannot sleep, It’s insane and I’m depressed because I cry every day.
“And the reason I’m saying this is because I don’t think how the state of California can have all this written in the court documents from the time I showed up and do absolutely nothing,” she said.
There were confidential court records days ago obtained by and published by the New York Times revealing Spears tried to end the conservatorship for years and claimed the arrangement is “an oppressive and controlling tool” that left her with few freedoms in her day-to-day life.
Her father, Jamie Spears responding to the allegations, said he only acted in his daughter’s best interests as her guardian.
He noted that the conservatorship with his daughter was a voluntary one.

”Hard work does not bring wealth” – Reno Omokri says

Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s ex-aide, Reno Omokri, has asserted that working hard does not guarantee that one will become wealthy.

According to the author and US-based pastor, what truly brings wealth in life is working smart and not the other way round.

He further noted that the term ‘hard work’ was invented by the elite to oppress the working middle-class.

Quoting a bible verse, Omokri said poverty should motivate people to work smart to evade the life of insufficient resources.

In his words; “Hard work does not bring wealth. That is a myth the upper class sold the working class to suppress them. So, what brings wealth? Smart work, not hard work. The smarter you work, the wealthier you get. The harder you work, the unhealthier you get.

Even Scripture says “If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success”-Ecclesiastes 10:10.

So, even if you are poor and people mock you over your poverty, don’t feel bad. Instead, let their mockery motivate you to work smart and succeed, until you get to the point where you are so successful that your workers earn more than your mockers!”

OUR MCM FOR TODAY IS VIN DIESEL

Vin Diesel was born as Mark Sinclair on July 18, 1967, in Alameda County, California, with his fraternal twin brother, Paul. His mother, Delora Sherleen Vincent (née Sinclair), is an astrologer. Diesel has stated that he is “of ambiguous ethnicity”. His mother has English, German, and Scottish roots.

He has never met his biological father, and has stated that “all I know from my mother is that I have connections to many different cultures”. Diesel has self-identified as “definitely a person of color”, and has stated that his parents’ relationship would have been illegal in parts of the United States due to anti-miscegenation laws. He was raised in New York City by his white American mother and African-American stepfather, Irving H. Vincent, an acting instructor and theater manager.

Diesel made his stage debut at age seven when he appeared in the children’s play Dinosaur Door, written by Barbara Garson. The play was produced at Theater for the New City in New York’s Greenwich Village. His involvement in the play came about when he, his brother and some friends had broken into the Theater for the New City space on Jane Street with the intent to vandalize it.

They were confronted by the theater’s artistic director, Crystal Field, who offered them roles in the upcoming show instead of calling the police. Diesel remained involved with the theater throughout adolescence, going on to attend NYC’s Hunter College, where studies in creative writing led him to begin screenwriting. He has identified himself as a “multi-faceted” actor.

Diesel’s first film role was a brief uncredited in the drama film Awakenings (1990). In 1994, he wrote, directed, produced, and sappearancetarred in the short drama film Multi-Facial, a semi-autobiographical film which follows a struggling multiracial actor stuck in the audition process. The film was selected for screening at the 1995 Cannes Festival.

In 1997, Diesel made his first feature-length film, Strays, an urban drama in which he played a gang leader whose love for a woman inspires him to try to change his ways. Written, directed, and produced by Diesel, the film was selected for competition at the 1997 Sundance Festival, leading to an MTV deal to turn it into a series.

Director Steven Spielberg took notice of Diesel after seeing him in Multi-Facial and cast him in a small role as a soldier in his 1998 Oscar-winning war film Saving Private Ryan. In 1999, he provided the voice of the title character in the animated film The Iron Giant.

In 2000, Diesel had a supporting role in the drama thriller Boiler Room, where he appeared alongside Giovanni Ribisi and Ben Affleck. He got his breakthrough leading role as the anti-hero Riddick in the science-fiction film Pitch Black later that year. Diesel attained action hero stardom with two box office hits: the street racing action film The Fast and the Furious (2001), and the action thriller XXX (2002). He turned down the chance to reprise his roles in the sequels 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) and XXX: State of the Union (2005).

Instead he chose to reprise his role as Riddick in The Chronicles of Riddick, which was a box office failure considering the large budget. He also voiced the character in two spin-off video games and the anime film The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury. In a change from his previous action hero roles, in 2005, he played a lighthearted role in the comedy film The Pacifier, which was a box office success.

In 2006, he chose a dramatic role playing real-life mobster Jack DiNorscio in Find Me Guilty. Although he received critical acclaim for his performance, the film did poorly at the box office grossing only $2 million against a budget of $13 million. Later that year, Diesel made a cameo appearance in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, reprising his role from The Fast and the Furious.

In 2007, Diesel was set to produce and star as Agent 47 in the film adaptation of the video game Hitman, but eventually pulled back and served as executive producer on the film instead. In 2008, he starred in the science-fiction action thriller Babylon A.D. which was a critical and box office failure. Diesel returned to The Fast and the Furious series, alongside most of the principal cast from the original 2001 film, in Fast & Furious, which was released in April 2009.

Diesel reprised his role as Dominic Toretto in installments five through nine of the Fast & Furious franchise, Fast Five (2011), Fast & Furious 6 (2013), Furious 7 (2015), The Fate of the Furious (2017) and F9 (2021). He reprised his role as Riddick in the third film of The Chronicles of Riddick series, simply titled Riddick (2013). In August 2013, Diesel received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

He voiced Groot in the 2014 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Guardians of the Galaxy. He starred in the supernatural action film The Last Witch Hunter (2015). In 2016, Diesel appeared as a supporting character in Ang Lee’s war drama Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.

In 2017, Diesel also reprised his roles as Xander Cage in XXX: Return of Xander Cage, and Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Over the course of several years, Diesel has discussed playing two separate roles within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In November 2016 director of Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn, confirmed that Diesel had been in talks to play Blackagar Boltagon / Black Bolt for the planned Inhumans film, but it was turned into a television series instead without Diesel involved.

Diesel reprised his role of Groot once again in the crossover films Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) which combined the superhero teams of Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers.

He has said, “[I] think there’s gonna be a moment that we’re all waiting for, and whether you know it or not, you are waiting to see [Groot] and [the Hulk] get down.”

Diesel portrayed Valiant Comics character Bloodshot in the film of the same name which released in March 2020. He is also joining the cast of James Cameron’s Avatar 2.

In September 2020, Diesel announced his venture into music, with the release of the song “Feel Like I Do”, produced by Kygo. He debuted the song on The Kelly Clarkson Show on September 24, stating: “I am blessed that on a year that I would normally be on a movie set — and as you know, that’s not possible — I’ve had another creative outlet. Another way to show you, or share with you, my heart.”

Diesel has said he prefers to maintain his privacy regarding his personal life, stating: “I’m not gonna put it out there on a magazine cover like some other actors. I come from the Harrison Ford, Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino code of silence.”

Sometime around 2001, Diesel dated his Fast & Furious co-star Michelle Rodriguez. Since 2007, he has been in a relationship with Mexican model Paloma Jimenez; the couple have three children: daughter Hania Riley (born April 2008), son Vincent Sinclair (born 2010), and daughter Pauline (born March 2015). The last is named in honor of his co-star and friend Paul Walker, who died in November 2013. He is also the godfather of Walker’s daughter, Meadow.

Diesel is noted for his distinctive deep voice; he said his voice broke around age 15, giving him a mature-sounding voice on the telephone. He has played Dungeons & Dragons for over 37 years as of 2021, and wrote the foreword for the commemorative book 30 Years of Adventure: A Celebration of Dungeons & Dragons. Canadian video game designer and developer Merritt k created the 2015 ASMR game Vin Diesel DMing a Game of D&D Just For You based on his D&D fandom. He has expressed his love for the Dominican Republic and how he relates to its multicultural facets. He is acquainted with its former president, Leonel Fernández, and appeared in one of Fernández’s earlier campaign ads. Los Bandoleros, a short film directed by Diesel, was filmed in the Dominican Republic.
