He later appointed Mr. Emmanuel Famu as the acting registrar of the institution.

Lagos pegs ‘Danfo’ levies at N800 daily, NURTW reacts

The Lagos State Government has pegged the daily levy being paid by commercial bus drivers at N800 daily from the current N3000, in a move to sanitise the transport seftor.

This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Finance, Dr Rabiu Olowo at an Inter-Ministerial press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja.

According to Olowo, this mandate would commence from February 1, 2022 in order to harmonise the informal transport sector while ensuring checks and balances on the part of the state government.

Dignitaries in attendance included Special Adviser to the State Governor on Transportation, Mr Toyin Fayinka, Chairman and Secretary of Conference of 57, Mr David Kolade and Mr Razaq Ajala respectively.

Others included Chairman Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, LIRS, Mr Ayodele Subair, MD Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, Mr Ibrahim Odumboni, National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Musilihu Akinsanya alias MC Oluomo, among others.

The Commissioner further noted that the utmost priority of the government was the well-being of Lagosians.

“Mr Governor has made it a priority to put the interest of Lagosians first that is why we all the stakeholders are here today. Before we came out, we have fought, disagreed, and agreed on the need to have our consolidated informal transport sector levy.

The government of Babajide Sanwo-Olu has inspired that we all come together to have a consolidated levy that takes care of personal income taxes, dues on environment Local Government levy and others. We want to reduce the multiplicity of collection taxes, dues, and levies.”

“We want to harmonize, to have a single charge of N800. We want to moderate the fee payable to Government. This is a very insightful breakthrough for all those who do business within the informal transport sector in the state,” Olowo stated.

In his statement, the Special Adviser to the State Governor on Transportation, Mr Toyin Fayinka clarified that any levy paid at a particular Local Government Area takes care of the daily levies and charges.

A bus driver from Badagry having paid N800 to Badagry local government and going to Mile 2, won’t pay again to Ojo local government. The payment of point of departure takes care of the daily levy and other charges by the government,” Fayinka stated.

However, in an opposing view, the Lagos State Chairman of the NURTW, Musilihu Akinsanya alias MC Oluomo, noted that “the N800 only cover all the money collected by the MDAs and that it did not affect the NURTW ticket.”

JUST IN: Court adjourns case of IPOB leader, Kanu, to Wednesday

The alleged treason charge of leader of the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu has been adjourned to Wednesday.

This was declared by the Presiding Judge, Binta Nyako at the Federal High Court in Abuja after an appeal by the defence team led by Mike Ozekhome.

The court session commenced at around 9:56 am on Tuesday with the prosecution lawyer appealing to the Judge to read out the amended 15-count charge against Kanu.

However, the defence team raised an opposition on the grounds that they were ignorant of the details of the charges and it would be an injustice to continue the trial due to these circumstances.

As a result, Justice Nyako mandated an adjournment with the case to resume tomorrow.

Before the adjournment, Ozekhome, in an interview granted within the court, accused the Federal Government of under-handedness regarding the timing of the new charges.

He further stated that members of the legal team and Kanu are yet to view the amended charges in order to prepare their defence.

Ozekhome said, “The case initially came up Dec 2, 2021, and there was enough time for the FG to have included the amended charges in order for the defendant, Nnamdi Kanu and his lawyers to understand these charges and work on their case.

“But the charges were, out of the blues, levelled against Kanu yesterday (Monday) and we, the lawyers, were only able to see and read through presently as the court is in session.

“As I talk to you presently, Kanu is yet to be aware of the amended charges because the DSS prevents visitors from the detention centre and in my opinion, the FG is stalling the case due to these events.

“The charges ought to have been served days before in order for the Kanu’s team to prepare; this is an injustice of the highest order.”

It must be reiterated for the benefit of all that the total approved collectibles for Public Secondary Schools are N4,450 for Returning Students and N5,800 for New Students.

“For Final Year Students, an additional payment of N2,800 has also been approved as Administrative and Practical Charges. Any other payment demanded from parents and guardians are illegal and unauthorised.

“Government, therefore, enjoins all stakeholders to be vigilant and report any of such confirmed extortion to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.”

Asari Dokubo recruiting Ijaw youths, cultists, to fight against Biafra, IPOB alleges

The Proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused former Niger Delta militant leader, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, of recruiting misguided Ijaw youths, cultists and some Niger Delta militants to fight against the actualization of Biafra.

In a statement issued by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful on Monday evening, the Igbo separatist group said Dokubo and some politicians who were againsts the group were “colluding with the Fulani security forces, the Presidency, evil politicians, including some governors in the South East region, to cause chaos and anarchy in Biafraland.”

IPOB also warned that the move by Dokubo and his co-conspirators “will be smoked out from his abode in Cotonou, Benin Republic, where he has been hiding.”

IPOB intelligence unit has uncovered plan about how Asari is moving around coastal areas of Biafra land recruiting cultists and demented fellows to join the wicked Nigeria security forces, evil politicians including some governors in the South East Region to attack people and blame it on IPOB and ESN operatives,” part of the statement made available to Ripples Nigeria reads in part.

“The public should know about this wicked plot in the coastal areas of Biafra by few enemies of Biafra restoration.

“They should never take us for granted. Biafrans living in both coastal area and hinterland are all part of our great nation.

“They must understand that Asari and his few traitors are trying to create confusion between Igbo Biafra and Izon (Ijaw) Biafra but we are waiting for his recruited boys.

“He should not think that we are cowards. Let him venture and see what we are capable of doing.

“Asari Dokubo has sealed his contract with the Nigeria Government and some South-East politicians in recruiting Ijaw youths to fight Biafra agitators in Biafra hinterland precisely IPOB and ESN operatives.

“IPOB has uncovered two camps Asari Dokubo opened in Bayelsa and Igweocha for the purpose of training the recruits.

“Some of the youths that were approached refused the offer, while some accepted the proposed monthly salary of 150,000 Naira.

Dokubo and his co travellers’ plan is to merge the Ijaw militant youths with Nigeria military and JTF.

“The new recruits will be provided with military uniforms and will be made to work with other security operatives to kill those agitating for the restoration of Biafra.

“We should not hesitate to officially notify the public and Biafrans through this press release especially PANDEF, Ijaw Youth Council, Elders and traditional rulers of Izon Kingdom and Ohaneze Ndigbo leaders, including all other tribal leaders across coastal land of Biafra, to call Asari Dokubo to order because we are ready for them at any time they may come.”

Oyo govt sets up surveillance system as lassa fever kills two

The Oyo State government has set up a surveillance system in all local government areas following an outbreak of Lassa fever in the Iwajowa area of the state.

According to the state’s commissioner for health, Dr. Bode Ladipo, in a statement released to Journalists on Monday, the outbreak occurred in a Fulani settlement called Gaa Agbaruru in Iwajowa and two deaths have been recorded so far.

The statement read in part: “The attention of the Ministry was drawn to reported cases of deaths at Iwajowa Local Government Area of Oyo State on Wednesday, 12th January, 2022. The deaths were said to have been associated with fever, gastrointestinal symptoms and some neck swelling.

“This warranted a high-level investigating team led by the Honourable Commissioner for Health to visit the LGA on Thursday, 13th January, 2022 to assess the situation and provide necessary support to abate any further transmission of the illness.

“The team was composed of senior officials of the Ministry, the State Primary Healthcare Board and the World Health Organization (WHO).

“An initial visit to the State General Hospital at Iwere lle revealed the fact that there was an increase in the number of cases brought from the Gaa Agbaruru settlement with confirmation of two (2) deaths at the facility. The team was then led to Gaa Agbaruru, a Fulani settlement in Iwere ward of the LGA where the victims of the illness came from.

“It was observed that there were cases with symptoms mentioned above but were recuperating. It was also confirmed that there was indeed a high degree of contact between the inhabitants, rodents and bats. In addition, the challenge of having potable water was noted.

“Blood samples were taken from the recuperating individuals with samples of water also taken. These samples were sent to the National Reference Laboratory for Haemorrhagic Fever in Abuja for analysis and confirmation.

The result of the investigation from the Reference Laboratory was received today, 17th January, 2022 with two (2) of the ten (10) samples testing positive for Lassa Fever.”

Dr. Ladipo however allayed the fears of residents of the state, disclosing that the government has already set up surveillance systems across LGAs in the state to curtail further spread of the virus.

He further explained that the Ministry of Health has repositioned doses of antiviral agents for treatment of the reported cases, adding that personal protective devices had been provided for health care providers at Iwere Ile and Iganna.

He, therefore, enjoined the general public to refer similar cases to nearest government hospitals for free and quality care.

Emirates Airline extends Nigeria’s flight ban, lifts restrictions on Ghana, Uganda, others

United Arab Emirates (UAE) flag carrier, Emirates Airline, has snubbed Nigeria as the aviation company lifted its flight restriction in five other African countries almost three weeks after the embargo.

What you need to know

The airline extended the flight ban on Nigeria which began in the last week of December after the West African country increased the flight route of Emirates after an initial suspension.

Nigeria had reduced and limited Emirates flights to one, with the travel location being Abuja, against its 21 weekly passenger flights to Nigeria, which was divided to one daily to Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja and two to Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

This was in response to Dubai restoring Air Peace flights schedule to the Arab region back to three, from the single flight which was reportedly occasioned by the Nigerian airline’s change in airport at UAE; from Sharjah Airport, to Dubai Airport, before returning to Sharjah Airport.

Emirates shut Nigeria out, opt for Ghana, Guinea, others

After the restoration of the weekly flights for Emirates Airline, the UAE flag carrier imposed it’s own embargo on Nigeria and seven African countries last month on the grounds of Omicron COVID-19 cases.

But while Emirates has announced on its website that flights into Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Uganda, and Angola have resumed, it maintained its restriction on Nigerian operation.

From 13 January 2022, Emirates will resume passenger services to and from Guinea (CKY), Cote d’Ivoire (ABJ), Ghana (ACC), Uganda (EBB) and Angola (LAD).”

The Nigerian government hasn’t responded to the embargo, and its unclear the way the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari will go as Air Peace operation in UAE is not affected.

Buhari government, Emirates might collide over conditions to lift restriction

Citizens of Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Uganda, and Angola travelling to UAE will have to adhere a series of medical requirements tied to the COVID-19 treatment – a move that Nigerian government has frowned against.

It was gathered that citizens of Guinea, Uganda and Ghana must obtain, within 48 hours of departure, a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test to check-in.

Other requirement for Guinea, Uganda and Ghana is that their citizens must present themselves for PCR test on arrival in UAE, this is after a six‑hours rapid PCR with a QR code before departure.

While citizens in Angola and Ivory Coast are to conduct a PCR test on arrival in Dubai. This comes after they have submitted a negative 72-hour PCR test prior to departure.

Ripples Nigeria had reported in March 2021, that the Nigerian Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, said the procedure of Emirates was devoid of any scientific reasons, stating only 72-hour PCR was warranted.

In his comments, Sirika said Emirate airlines “made demands that there would be PCR test for passengers within 72 hours of their flight and there will also be antigens rapid test at the airport and also a PCR test on arrival in their countries.

“It is devoid of any scientific reasons because the virus itself will incubate at least within or after 72 hours.”

Emirates refusal to conduct only a 72-hour PCR for inbound and outbound flights led to the ban of the airline in March. So with Emirates now insisting on the PCR test on arrival in UAE and the six‑hours rapid PCR before departure in African countries, flight resumption by the UAE airline in Nigeria might take awhile.

Lagos to close Marine Bridge for three months

The Lagos State government on Sunday announced the closure of the Marine Bridge and Dopemu Road in the Agege area of the state for three months to pave way for repair works on the two facilities.

The state’s Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, who disclosed this in a statement, said the Marine Bridge would be shut from January 17 to April 2 for emergency repair works.

He added that the Dopemu road will be closed to the public from January 21 for rehabilitation and upgrade.

The commissioner said: “Temporary closure of the bridge will be in two sections, Apapa Outbound, which will be repaired between January 17, and March 9, 2022, and the Apapa Inbound section of the bridge scheduled between March 10 and April 2, 2022.

“Traffic outbound Apapa will be diverted to give way for the flow of traffic between Rapid Response Squad (RRS) point and Total Bridge. Motorists using lighter vehicles will be diverted to Marine Beach by a Mobil filling station to connect Ijora Bridge or make use of the service lane by Leventis to connect Naval Dockyard to link Total under bridge to further their journeys.

“For the inbound Apapa motorists during the second phase of the rehabilitation works, traffic will be diverted to allow the flow of traffic between Total Bridge and RRS point.

“Motorists using lighter vehicles will be allowed to descend towards Total Under Bridge and make use of Fire Service road to connect Marine Beach by Mobil filling station, while those heading towards Apapa will make a detour and connect Area B through NAGAFF using Mobil filling station service lane.

“For Dopemu Road, the repair works will be executed in three phases. The first phase will focus on Ipaja road to Adealu Street junction which will last three months.

“Alternative routes have been mapped by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to allow effective control of vehicular movement along the axis during the duration of the construction.”

We are confident of victory for Nnamdi Kanu —Lawyer boasts

Barr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the lead counsel to the leader of proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is confident his client would come out victorious when he appears before Justice Binta Nyako of a Federal High Court in Abuja, from January 18.

Ejiofor, who gave this assurance in a statement made available to Ripples Nigeria on Friday, said his routine visit to Kanu at the DSS detention facility in Abuja on Thursday, gave him the confidence that the Biafran agitator will defeat the Federal Government.

“In the course of the visit to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, our discussions focused primarily on our final preparations for the legal battle that would resume on the turf of the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division, from next week and on subsequent adjourned dates, if any.

We coalesced the product of our individual reflections on the most potent legal strategies henceforth to be adopted, fine-tuned and harmonised them, and then distilled them into a single, conclusive, potent, workable formula. We are optimistic that the court outings of Onyendu would be impressive. Onyendu himself is in high spirit.

“Our discussions with him further reassured him and strengthened his determination to persevere unrelentingly. I declare to you, Umuchineke, that Onyendu is fully prepared to appear in court as from January 18, 2022. He is rooting for victory and knows that, with the help of Chukwuokike Abiama, victory is assured.

“You will all behold with your eyes an interesting dimension in the harmonised workable formula we have evolved. The detractors of Onyendu will be comprehensively humbled and permanently put to shame.

Further, Onyendu utilized the opportunity afforded by our visit to mandate us to admonish his teeming supporters and followers.

He advises those of them that would appear in court in demonstration of their unflinching support and loyalty to him to conduct themselves with decorum, be civil in their conduct and comportment, shun violence and deviant behaviour in any manner or form, and exercise restraint in speech.

“On our part, we have caused formal correspondences to issue on responsible, sovereign, democratic governments and other international institutions to prevail on the Nigerian government to caution uncouth and overzealous security agents.

“We can authoritatively declare to you, Umuchineke, that those correspondences are receiving the requisite attention they deserve. We are optimistic that there would be a positive transformation in the conduct and general approach of the said overzealous security agents at the next appearance of Onyendu in Court.

We make bold to state for the umpteenth time that Onyendu has not committed any offence known to law. For this reason, he must be released unconditionally.

“We specially appeal to you, Umuchineke, to demonstrate profound understanding and fortitude in these trying times. You must remain focused, dogged, and resilient. On no account must your untiring spirit be shaken and your resolve diluted.

“You must keep the peace at all times and comport yourselves with decorum. In no too distant time, you will surely savour the sweetness of victory. Celebration and jollity will resound in your respective dwellings and sorrow and sighing shall take a permanent and unremitting flight to the abyss.

Onyendu expresses his profound gratitude and appreciation to millions of his followers and supporters scattered throughout the face of the earth. He declares to them never to lose hope but to hold steadfastly to that one thing that is dear to them. He promises them that with the help of Chukwuokike Abiama the present distraction would soon pass and that victory and celebration would be their lot,” the statement reads.

NDLEA grills socialite Obi Cubana

Nigerian socialite and chairman of the Cubana group of companies, Obinna Iyiegbu better known as Obi Cubana was drilled on Thursday, January 13 by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for alleged involvement in narcotics business.

According to Punch Newspaper, the Anambra State-born socialite was quizzed for five hours at the Abuja headquarters of NDLEA before he was granted bail and ordered to return at a future date.

It was further gathered that operatives of the NDLEA and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have now widened the probe into Cubana and his business network, based on the premise that he may be involved in the drug business.

The source informed the publication;

“Obi Cubana arrived at the NDLEA office around 9am and responded to questions for some hours before he was granted bail at 2pm. There are suspicions that he may be a drug kingpin. Some convicted drug dealers paid funds into his account.

“We have been able to establish three of such payments. One of the persons that paid money into his account was convicted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; another one that was convicted in New Delhi, India; also paid money into his account while a third person that was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and convicted in 2017, also paid money into Cubana’s account.”

Cubana is reportedly expected to present some documents to NDLEA at their next meeting. When Obi Cubana’s aide, Chioma Nwachukwu was contacted by the newspaper, she said;

“There is no comment on the matter now.”

It would be recalled that the nightlife aficionado was invited for questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged money laundering and tax evasion in the latter part of 2021. Cubana was released from EFCC custody several days after he was arrested.

The nightclub owner made headlines in July 2021 when he organized a lavish funeral for his mother, Ezinne Iyiegbu, in Oba, Idemili South local government area of Anambra State.

EFCC arraigns car importer for alleged N264m fraud in Kaduna

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday arraigned a car importer, Muhammed Sani Dauda, at the Kaduna State High Court for alleged N264 million fraud.

The commission also arranged Dauda’s company, MS Seven Nigeria Limited, for alleged complicity in the fraud.

The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, said the defendants were arraigned on a two-count charge of fraud before Justice Darius Khobo.

The statement read: “The defendant was arrested by the EFCC during a petition which alleged that in August 2021, the complainant (name withheld) falsely claimed that he was into luxury car importation from the United States.

“After convincing the complainant to buy a car from him, he deposited N70 million into the company’s account for the purchase of a Mercedes Benz S-class 2021 model.

He paid another N194,128,500.00 into the defendant’s company’s account domiciled in another bank for the purchase of a Mercedes Benz G-Wagon and a Rolls Royce.

“The complainant, however, lamented that Dauda had remained unreachable since the payments were made.

“He had pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charges against him.

Justice Khobo had granted him bail in the sum of N5,000,000 with a surety who must be a resident of Kaduna and owns a landed property that has a Certificate of Occupancy verifiable by Kaduna Geographical Information Service (KADGIS) and EFCC.

Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey, to start mining bitcoin for crypto market

Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey, is set to go into the business of mining bitcoin through its payment startup, Block, as the firm plans to make mining more accessible to interested individuals.

Dorsey had complained about the limited access to bitcoin mining in October, stating that mining was complex, and there wasn’t enough incentive for individuals to overcome the complexity.

His payment company, formerly known as Square, will now be providing mining essentials to bitcoin miners, according to Block’s general manager for hardware, Thomas Templeton.

Templeton made this known in a series of tweets on Thursday, stating that Block will be providing solution to the complexity from buying, to set up, to maintenance, to mining.

Block is prepared to build ASIC miner, a hardware used for mining digital currency, as Templeton said the current system used were besieged by various problems.

Templeton tweeted, “Common issues we’ve heard with current systems are around heat dissipation and dust. They also become non-functional almost every day, which requires a time-consuming reboot. We want to build something that just works.”

“They’re also very noisy, which makes them too loud for home use.” the general manager of the payment startup stated three months after Dorsey said, “Mining needs to be more distributed.” to increase access.
