‘The North is under siege,’ ACF reacts to Kaduna train attack

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) on Wednesday condemned the terrorists’ attack on an Abuja-Kaduna train with over 900 people on board.

An unspecified number of people were killed on Monday night when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by the criminals in one of the train’s coaches went off and forced it to derail a few minutes into the trip.

In a statement issued by its Secretary-General, Murtala Aliyu, the ACF described the frequent attacks by terrorists in the Northern region as unacceptable.

The group insisted that the frequency of the attacks had shown that the region is under a siege.

The statement read: “The ACF commiserate with the souls lost, sympathises with the wounded and prays for an end to such ugly menace, not only in Kaduna State, but all over the federation.

“The fact that both air and rail systems, out of Kaduna, have been compromised, it is to be expected that a sensitive government should protect the only route (Kaduna/Abuja highway).

The attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train is unacceptable, and the frequency of such attacks on our towns and villages, highways and now train tracks and airports are lamentable.

“The banditry and terrorism have excised the North and the major economic activities of North-East and the North-West with a new ploy to block Kaduna which is the main gateway to the Northern part of the country.

“One can, easily, recall how the lives and economy of the Borno, Zamfara, Sokoto, Niger, and Kaduna (Birnin Gwari and Southern parts of Kaduna), were damaged, and now, taking their turn on the infrastructure.

“We call on northerners to remain positive and law-abiding, and not relent in their resilience and hope towards making lives better.

We also call on the Federal and State Governments to, as a matter of urgency, revisit their security architecture, with a view to protecting lives and property of Nigerians.

Army claims it killed 12 terrorists who attacked Kaduna airport

The Nigerian Army has said that no fewer than 12 of the terrorists that attacked the Kaduna international airport on Saturday were killed in an air strike.

Brigadier-General and Garrison Commander of the Kaduna Division 1, Uriah Opuene, disclosed this during a briefing with journalists on Monday.

He also denounced reports making the rounds that the gunmen took over the airport.

He said: “People just took advantage of that to pass a message that bandits have attacked the airport.

What people don’t know is that there are several layers of security at the airport. This is the first layer and even this first layer was not breached, because from the moment of hearing that shot, our men got there immediately from the next layer of security.

By the time we would arrive, the bandits were already running away, so we instantly engaged them through the use of ground forces.

“We called for an air strike and a helicopter was deployed and from the air report, about 12 of the bandits were killed. As you can see from the distance, the insinuation that the terrorists took over the airport is not correct”, the commander added.

Anambra govt kicks off tax drive, to recoup N513bn

In adherence to the mandate of Governor Charles Soludo, the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) revealed it will commence enforcement of collection of all outstanding tax bills in the state from April 1.

This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by Richard Madiebo, the new Chairman of AIRS, signed by Mrs Sylvia Tochukwu-Ngige, Deputy Director/Head, Taxpayer Education and Enlightenment Team, in Awka.

Madiebo said that the enforcement would include social bills, including signages and waste management.

The immediate past Chairman of AIRS, Dr David Nzekwu, had disclosed that the state government had an outstanding bill of N513.9 billion payable by no fewer than 2.1 million taxpayers.

Nzekwu said this amount was captured in its database under the Anambra Social Service Identity (ANSSID) number.

We have generated a total collectible bill of N513.9 billion as of January 2022 against 2.1 million taxpayers in the state.

This means that if my successor can ensure payment of this bill by indebted individuals, and they begin to make payment, the government will have a lot of money,” the former chairman had said.

In his statement, Madiebo urged Anambra residents to check the ANSSID portal for their status in order to ensure the appropriate tax filings.

“The enforcement team from AIRS will be enforcing payment of taxes and levies, including Business Premises Permit, Waste Management (ASWAMA), Signage (ANSAA), and fire service compliance.

“Anambra residents are advised by this announcement to check their ANSSID status to confirm if they have paid.

“They can visit any commercial bank of their choice using their ANSSID number to pay, Madiebo said.

He advised payers not to leave the pay-point with evidence of payment alone, but to ensure confirmation that the money had dropped into Anambra Government’s account.

“Be a partner in the development that Gov. Charles Soludo is bringing to us, please, pay your tax,” the AIRS boss urged residents.

No going back on eviction of traders at Apogbon under bridge – Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said on Monday there would be no going back on the eviction of traders under the Apogbon Bridge in Lagos Island.

Fire had last Wednesday razed several shops under the Apongbon section of the Eko Bridge in Lagos State.

Sanwo-Olu, who addressed traders during an inspection of the bridge, said it would be reckless on the part of the government to allow the traders to continue doing business under the structure.

The traders had earlier carried placards near the bridge and appealed to the government to withdraw the eviction notice.

The traders, who came together under the auspices of the Apongbon/Ebute-Ero Marketers’ Association, said they had occupied the place for 50 years.

However, the governor insisted that the government would not withdraw the seven days ultimatum given to the traders to vacate the bridge.

He said: “The level of destruction is extremely unfortunate. This is a clear testimony of how public assets should not be turned to. We are going to start excessive clearing of the place.

“To go back to how it is being done is to mean that we are just being reckless, it will make us completely irresponsible because we cannot assure the safety of the bridge.

”We cannot just allow all of that to happen. They are completely illegal. And there are things that we should not have around us and in a big city like this, it is not acceptable.”

Nigerians spent $39.66bn on studying abroad, healthcare —CBN report

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revealed that Nigerians spent a total of $39.66 billion on foreign education and healthcare-related services between 2010 and 2020.

Out of this total $28.65 billion was specifically paid by Nigerian parents and guardians for their wards to study abroad, while $11.01bn was for healthcare-related services in foreign countries.

CBN disclosed this in its Balance of Payment report published on its website which was analysed in another report titled ‘A Simple and Factual Explanation of Nigeria’s Exchange Rate Dynamics”.

According to the report, the high cost of these services drastically increased the demand for foreign exchange in the country, which has put a strain on the value of the naira to the dollar.

The report which seeks to provide answers to questions on the continuous rise and fall of Nigeria’s exchange rate explained that the exchange rate of the naira was the price of the dominant foreign currency in the country – the US dollars.

It added that like the price of every other commodity, the price of the dollar in Nigeria is determined by the interplay of demand and supply of the foreign currency in the country’s market.

The report noted that an increase in demand for a commodity leads to a rise in the price of that commodity, adding that a similar result is replicated when a fall in supply occurs.

Using the same logic, the report explained that the depreciation or appreciation of Nigeria’s exchange rate or the naira is determined by the rise or fall of demand and supply.

On-demand, the report explained that factors such as the cost of foreign education, healthcare, and a large import bill had major impacts on the increase in the demand for foreign exchange in the country.

It added that the factors had also greatly contributed to the weakening of the naira.

According to the report, between 1998 and 2018, the number of Nigerians studying abroad quadrupled, from 15,000 to 96,702, a rise attributed to the spike in the cost of foreign education.

It added, “Today, a sizeable amount of the foreign exchange request Nigerian banks receive for school fees are for primary and secondary school education, some of which are for neighbouring African countries.”
