Rapper “Diddy” faces new sexual assault case

Embattled rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs is facing another sexual assault case after a woman came forward with fresh accusations against him.

The complaint filed him in New York by former porn star Adria English is the latest of several lawsuits filed against the star in recent months.

Mr Combs, who is one of rap’s most successful moguls, has consistently denied all allegations of sexual assault and physical abuse, including the latest ones.

The star is now reportedly also the subject of a federal criminal investigation, though there is no sign any charges are imminent, according to NBC News.

Mr Combs’s legal woes have mounted after accusations made by ex-girlfriend Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura in November. Earlier this year, he apologised after footage came to light that showed him attacking Ms Ventura in a hotel hallway in 2016.

The new case against in New York alleges that Mr Combs “forced and coerced (Ms English) to engage in sex work for him” at parties. It also alleges that the rapper threatened to ruin her career if she did not comply.

A total of 33 allegations are made against Mr Combs and his associates in Ms English’s 114-page filing, which gives an account of events between 2004 and 2009.

“No matter how many lawsuits are filed it won’t change the fact that Mr Combs has never sexually assaulted or sex trafficked anyone,” his lawyer told US media.

The statement went on to say that “Mr Combs is confident he will prevail against these and other baseless claims in court”.

Ms English is the latest in a string of women to make claims against Mr Combs in recent months, following a lawsuit launched by Ms Ventura that was settled by Mr Combs in November for an undisclosed sum.

She had accused him of rape and sexual trafficking over a decade. Mr Combs’ team clarified that the settlement was not an admission of wrongdoing.

Various allegations of sexual and physical abuse have been made against the rapper since then.

His homes in Los Angeles and Miami, Florida, were raided earlier this year as part of a federal investigation into human trafficking.

Mr Combs’s team has been notified that he is a subject of an ongoing federal criminal investigation, according to NBC News, citing two sources familiar with his legal issues.

Details of the reported investigation have not been revealed, and neither federal officials or Mr Combs’s legal team have commented on the matter specifically.

Court of Appeal affirms Baba Ijesha’s conviction

The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division has upheld the judgment of a Lagos State High Court, which sentenced Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju James, alias Baba Ijesha to five years imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old minor.

The appellate court in its lead judgement delivered on Friday by Justice Folashade Ojo found the Appellant (Baba Ijesha) guilty on counts four and five, where he was accused of indecently touching a minor and sexually assaulted her.

Other members of the three man panel are Justice Abdullahi Bayero and Justice Paul Bassi who aligned themselves with the lead judgment.

The Lagos State Government had arraigned Baba Ijesha on six-counts bordering on the indecent treatment of a child, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault by penetration.

The trial judge, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo (retd.), of the Ikeja Sexual Offence and Domestic Violence Court, in her judgment on July 14, 2022, sentenced Baba Ijesha to five years imprisonment over the sexual assault of a minor.

The court found Baba Ijesha guilty of indecent treatment of a child and sexual assault, of a minor between 2013 and 2014, which is contrary to Section 135 of Lagos State Criminal Law 2015.

However, Justice Taiwo exonerated him of the offence of sexual assault by penetration which deals with allegedly sexually assaulting a minor by penetration with his car key seven years ago and attempted sexual assault by penetration during another encounter with the minor on April 22, 2021.

The judge held that the prosecution successfully proved counts two and three that he indecently placed the survivor on his lap and rubbed his penis on her body.

But dissatisfied, Baba Ijesha through his counsel Mr Kayode Olabiran, approached the appeal court to challenge the judgment of the lower court, praying it to set aside his conviction and sentence.

While arguing that the prosecution failed to prove that his client sexually assaulted the victim, Olabiran said, “The appellant was set up. He is an actor. He acted in a script that he was invited to act by his colleague Prosecution witness one (PW1), Damilola Adekoya.”

Delivering judgment on the appeal on Friday, Justice Ojo set aside the appellant’s conviction on indecent treatment of a child and sexual assault of a minor which allegedly occurred between 2013 and 2014, describing the testimony of PW1 (Damilola Adekoya) as hearsay.

Justice Ojo, however, held that on the event that occurred on April 19, 2021, the evidence of PW1 (Damilola Adekoya) was an eye witness account, which he said, remains credible and one of the most effective ways to establish commission of an offence.

Furthermore, the judge held that the appellant’s voluntarily confessed to the crime of the event of April 19, 2021, and did not challenge the statement of (PW1), Damilola Adekoya throughout the proceedings.

Justice Ojo noted that the appellant made an extra judicial statement at Sabo Police station Lagos State on April 19, 2021, and another statement at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti on April 28, 2021, which were tendered in evidence.

According to the judge, in the two statements, the appellant admitted that he indecently touched and indeed molested PW2 (the victim), while she was alone with him in PW1’s (Damilola Adekoya) apartment.

In all, the judge held that the appeal succeeded in part and it was also allowed in part.

The judge ordered as follows, “The appellant’s conviction, and sentence to five years imprisonment for the offence of indecently touching of a child contrary to Section 135 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2011 (count two of the charge) is set aside.

“The Appellant conviction of three years imprisonment for the offence of sexual assault of a child contrary to section 261 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2011 (count three of the charge) is set aside.

“I affirm the conviction and sentence of the appellant to five years imprisonment for the offence of indecent treatment of a child contrary to section 135 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015 (count four of the charge).”

“The appellant’s conviction and sentence to three years imprisonment for sexual assault contrary to section 263 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2011 (count five of the information) is also affirmed.

“The sentences for counts four and five are to run concurrently,” Justice Ojo further held.

Malian singer detained in Italy over child custody row

Famous Malian singer Rokia Traoré has been arrested at the main international airport in Italy’s capital Rome over a conviction in Belgium arising from a child custody dispute.

She was arrested at Fiumicino airport as she flew in for a concert, Italian media reported.

A spokesperson for the airport told the AFP news agency on Sunday that border police had confirmed her arrest.

Traoré was initially detained in France in 2020 on a Belgian arrest warrant after failing to heed a court order to hand over her child to her Belgian father.

Months after she was conditionally released, she flew out to Mali on a private flight, defying a ban from leaving France until her extradition to Belgium.

Last October, Traoré was sentenced in absentia to two years in prison by a court in Belgium on charges of parental abduction for “failing to hand over a child to the person entitled to custody”, Belgian prosecutors told AFP.

Her daughter, who is now aged nine years, has lived in Mali since turning four.

A lawyer for the child’s father, Traoré’s former partner, reportedly said he had not had any contact with his daughter since then.

When she was initially arrested in 2020, she had been travelling from Mali to Brussels intending to appeal against the custody ruling, her lawyers had said.

Mali’s government then came out in support of the singer, saying that she had a diplomatic passport.

Traoré is one of Africa’s best known vocalists. She has won several awards, including the BBC Award for World Music in 2004 and the 2009 World Music Album of the year in the Victoires de la Musique, the French equivalent of the Grammys.

She is also known for her advocacy work for refugees, becoming a goodwill ambassador for the UN’s High Commissioner for Refugees in 2015 in West and Central Africa.

Davido pressuring me for s*x despite being with Chioma- Sophia Momodu

Sophia Momodu, baby mama to Nigerian singer David Adeleke known as Davido, has accused her baby daddy of pressuring her for s*x despite his public relationship with Chioma.

The allegation came days after Davido took a legal action to get joint custody of their daughter, Imade.

Ms Momodu’s allegation is contained in a statement dated June 22, 2024, issued by her legal representatives, Punuka Attorneys & Solicitors and Bimpe Ajegbomogun & Co, and exclusively obtained by Pulse Nigeria.

According to the statement, Sophia and Davido were in a relationship from 2014 to 2017 and then again from 2020 to 2022.

During these periods, Davido provided financial support for their daughter, covering essential expenses such as school fees, rent, and other living costs.

Ms Momodu alleged that since their breakup in July 2022, Davido has been harassing her with demands for sexual favours.

The statement issued by her legal representatives read: “Since then, David has repeatedly threatened to make Sophia’s life miserable if she does not make herself available to him sexually.”

The statement highlights Davido’s lack of contact with their daughter since July 2022 saying that despite Sophia not denying him access, Davido has allegedly chosen not to see their daughter, missing significant events in her life such as birthday and Christmas.

Her lawyers emphasized, “Sophia has never denied him the opportunity to see his daughter. He has not reached out on special occasions such as her birthday or Christmas for the past two years, which has left his daughter distressed and questioning why her father has cut contact with her.”

Ms Momodu claimed that Davido failed to pay for their daughter’s school fees since July 2022, leading to repeated contacts from the school. Eventually, Davido’s father, Adedeji Adeleke, had to step in to settle the outstanding fees.

“David has not fulfilled his financial responsibilities towards their daughter, leaving her school fees unpaid,” the statement added.

Since their breakup, the lawyers alleged that Ms Momodu had borne the financial burden alone, covering rent, living costs, healthcare, and other expenses for their daughter.

Despite these challenges, she recounted attempts to establish a formal co-parenting arrangement two years ago, which were allegedly rebuffed by Davido and his legal team.

Her lawyers noted, “Two years ago, Sophia initiated efforts through her legal team to establish a formal co-parenting arrangement with David. But he and his lawyers have consistently refused to cooperate toward a mutually agreeable resolution. Sophia has never denied David access to their daughter, only access to her body and intimacy, which he has taken issue with.”

The statement read that Ms Momodu wished Davido well in his public relationship and she refrained from commenting.

“David is in a publicly known relationship, and Sophia wishes him well. She seeks to move forward in her life free from harassment and verbal abuse. Sophia refrains from further comment as the matter has escalated into a legal dispute,” her lawyers stated.

Despite Davido frequently referring to Chioma as his wife, suggesting they may already be legally married, they are still anticipated to hold a formal wedding ceremony soon.
