Chidimma Adetshina withdraws from Miss South Africa pageant

Chidimma Adetshina, a Miss South Africa contestant, has withdrawn from the competition.

She said she withdrew for the safety and wellbeing of herself and family.

South Africa’s national beauty pageant has been enmeshed in controversy after the government accused Chidimma’s mother of fraud and identity theft.

Consequently, Chidimma, 23, has been the subject of hostile, xenophobic attacks on social media after she was announced as a finalist in the competition in July.

Many had questioned her credentials, including cabinet ministers.

The controversy the issue generated led to an investigation into her citizenship by the Home Affairs Ministry, after a request from the pageant’s organisers.

The investigation uncovered “prima facie indications” that Chidimma’s mother may have committed fraud and stolen the identity of a South African woman after the Miss SA hopeful was born, the ministry said on Wednesday.

In a post on her Instagram account, Chidimma said although withdrawing from the pageant is a difficult decision, the safety of her family comes first.

The post reads, “I would like to start off by thanking everyone who has stood beside me right from the start of my Miss South Africa journey. I’m really grateful for all the love and support I have been shown.

“Being part of the Miss South Africa 2024 competition has been an amazing journey however, after much careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw myself from the competition for the safety and wellbeing of my family and I.

“With the support of the Miss South Africa Organisation, I leave with a heart full of gratitude for this amazing experience.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish my fellow finalists all of the best for the remainder of the competition. Whoever wears the crown represents us all.”

“I feel so completely grateful to have been asked to open the Paris @Olympics 2024 this year. I am also humbled to be asked by the Olympics organizing committee to sing such a special French song—a song to honor the French people and their tremendous history of art, music, and theatre.

“This song was sung by Zizi Jeanmaire, born in Paris a French ballerina, she famously sang ‘Mon Truc en Plumes’ in 1961. The title means ‘My Thing with Feathers.’

“And this is not the first time we’ve crossed paths. Zizi starred in Cole Porter’s musical ‘Anything Goes’ which was my first jazz release,” the statement said partly.

Gaga stated that although she isn’t French, she has “always felt a very special connection with French people and singing French music.”

“We rented pom poms from Le Lido archive—a real French cabaret theater. We collaborated with Dior to create custom costumes, using naturally molted feathers.

I hope you love this performance as much as I do.

“And to everyone in France, thank you so much for welcoming me to your country to sing in honor of you—it’s a gift I’ll never forget!

Netflix hikes subscription prices by 40% in Nigeria second time this year

Video streaming platform Netflix has announced a 40% increase in subscription prices in Nigeria, marking the second price hike this year. The latest adjustment follows a previous price hike implemented three months ago, reflecting the company’s ongoing strategy to adjust pricing in response to local economic conditions and rising operational costs.

On its website, Netflix stated, “As we continue to add more TV shows and movies and introduce new product features, our plans and prices may change. We also may adjust plans and pricing to respond to local market changes, such as changes to local taxes or inflation.”

Netflix also provided answers to several common questions about price changes, including how users will be notified via email one month before the new rate takes effect. If you don’t see the email, check to be sure your account email address is correct.

Users can compare current plans and pricing on their account and change plans at any time. Once a price update is announced, users will be subject to the new rates.

Netflix currently offers four plans: Mobile, Basic, Standard, and Premium.

The Mobile plan, which accommodates one user per device, will now cost ₦2,200, up 83% from ₦1,200.

The Basic plan has increased by 21% to ₦3,500 per month, up from ₦2,900.

The Standard subscription, which provides high-definition quality for viewing on two devices simultaneously, has risen by 37.5% from ₦4,000 to ₦5,000.

The Premium plan now costs ₦7,000 per month and includes Ultra HD quality on four devices simultaneously, along with download options on six devices.

This new price hike comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with rising inflation and a cost of living crisis, straining household budgets across the country.

These economic challenges have made discretionary spending, such as streaming subscriptions to be scrutinised more by consumers.

Earlier this year, Showmax, a service provided by Multichoice, also increased its subscription fees, prompting a public outcry as subscribers voiced their frustration over the additional financial burden.

This trend of increasing costs in the entertainment sector underscores the broader economic pressures faced by Nigerians.
