Court adjourns suit over caller tunes copyright to March 5

A Federal High Court in Lagos, on Tuesday, March 2, adjourned a suit by Nigerian artiste, Bright Okiki against some telecommunication companies over alleged copyright infringement ro March 5 for continued hearing.

The defendants in the suit are Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Ltd, Airtel, Globacom, and Mobilexcetra Ltd.

The plaintiff, who authored the song “Gba gbe boshe sele”, featuring Oritsefemi, alleged that the defendants used the said song as caller tunes without his authorisation.

In suit number FHC/L/CS/1776/17, the plaintiff is claiming N400 million cumulatively against the defendants for infringing on his intellectual property.

He is also asking the court to issue a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from continued use of his work.

The case, which was slated for continuation on Tuesday, could not proceed as the court, presided over by Justice Nicholas Oweibo, did not sit.

The case has now been fixed for March 5.

In his statement of claim, the plaintiff averred that he had paid to feature the star Artiste, Oritsefemi, in his song in order to get more acceptability.

He said that he was still working on promoting his song when people drew his attention to the fact that his song was now on caller tunes of some telecommunications companies.

According to him, he had downloaded the song from Airtel in order to be sure and had also found out from the Globacom website that his music was listed as caller tune.

He also downloaded the same from Globacom.

He said that his legal team had then printed them out as evidence before officially writing to the companies.

Meanwhile, in its counterclaim, the third defendant (Globacom) denies that it had committed any infringement on the plaintiff’s work.

It avers that the fourth defendant (mobileexcetera) had agreed to provide it with the caller tunes.

It added that it believed it had the authorisation of owners of the tunes.

Globacom avers that based on the fourth defendant’s memorandum of understanding with one Shetade Images on Feb. 13, 2017, it believed it could rely on the fourth defendant to provide it with the caller tunes.

It added that the same was supplied based on agreement.

The third defendant said that in the said memorandum, Oritsefemi, a co-copyright owner of the song, had given his consent.

The defendant, however, avers that the song has since been removed as caller tune and denies liability.

Also in its counterclaim, the first defendant also denies liability for any infringement citing a similar memorandum of understanding.

In Zambia a young boy, Joel Phiri has reportedly committed suicide after he failed his 12th-grade examination.

According to the sources, the deceased was asked by his uncle to repeat the two grade 12 subjects he had failed, a move that he didn’t accept.

Joel took his life by hanging himself. It’s very a sad situation losing such a young saul.

In Africa most countries the success of your life is determined by how you pass your exams.

If you fail people will look down upon you, if you pass everyone will praise you. The “examination mentality” is installed on our parents and guardians who force their kids to excel on “books” no matter how much they aren’t interested.

I don’t mean that kids shouldn’t be pushed to study, but at least the parents should give an ear to the child’s interest. Through this such disheartening incidence will be a thing of the past.

A disturbing video of an alleged Yahoo Boy is currently circulating round social media in the early hours of today, and it has left many people to fear and ask questions on the possible attack/evil that must have made the Victim in the Video become restless. Lot of persons have assumed that the young man in the video is a Yahoo Boy who tried to engage in fetish rituals but was caught off guard and as a result of that, he lost his mind.

In the video, the young man was heard saying; “I No Fit Kill My Mama” which translates to, “I can’t kill my Mother” and was affirming his words as people asked him whether he knows what he was saying. People around tried to calm him down but he refused to listen to them and kept pushing forward so he would be able to move away from the large crowd gathering around him.

One of the Men around him said, he is already insane and out of his mind. Some other people in the video kept shouting at his friends and urged them to hold him down, so that he won’t be able to run away from care. The video has left many people in deep worry and questions has been asked.

One cannot debate how, the reality of life keep hitting hard at humans and one cannot just take his/her eyes off all that his happening in his Society. The race for quick wealth has dominated the mindset of many young people around the world and this has made them become a beast who fears no one and would go to any mile or length to get the desires of his/her soul. We’ve heard news of how young Men ran mad and eat disgusting things in a bid to become rich as quick as possible and there have been instances too, where they become so useless that they remain invaluable to their society and even to their immediate families. Stories like this makes one sad, however, it also a big lesson for those who plan to do the evil that saw the end of those before them.

See how a Keke rider rescued children kidnapped by a couple

A Keke rider by name Nwuzor has aided in the rescue of children kidnapped by a couple in Ebonyi state.

It was gathered that the Keke rider who was conveying the couple with the children suspected that there must be something fishy going on as the children were looking very dirty and untidy.

He narrated that he picked them up along the road as the Keke conveying them broke down and so they boarded his own. He asked the woman why her children were looking dirty and where they were being taken to and she answered by saying that they are her sister’s children and she’s taking them with her because of fights going on in the local government. He was not convinced and followed them up and when their movement was somehow, he decided to raise alarm.

The police inspector who came into the matter praised the efforts of the Keke rider. He told everyone that , that was not actually the first of the case as one of the children rescued told them the woman who kidnapped her was fair and has a wound on her hand and when checked after the woman’s arrest was seen a wound as exactly the way the little child described.

So far this couple have kidnapped four kids and three has been rescued while one is yet to be seen. The father of the children thanked the Keke rider for the effort he put in rescuing his children, that the kids were sent on an errand and couldn’t return.

The man identified as Daniel Isaac works as a grinder at Mile 3 market, despite his blindness. He is always aided by his daughter, Precious Daniel who is not happy with their situation. His wife abandoned them and adviced her daughter to do likewise, but she refused because of the love she have for her father.

Daniel Isaac was having sight issues prior to his blindness in 2016. Initially, his eyes were itching him, as if sand entered his eyes, before he completely went blind. His daughter, Precious Daniel is 19 years of age, and her father’s condition has affected her lifestyle and the way she views things. She revealed that her mother left them because of her husband’s situation and adviced her daughter to follow her, but she shunned her mother and decided to stay with her father. Since then, she has tried all possible means to contact her mother, but all have proved abortive.

She also said that she wrote her Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in 2018, but have not seen her result, because she doesn’t have money to buy scratch card and she dreams of studying architecture in the university, She revealed that some people have sympathy for them and offers to help them, but at the end of the day, she will feel very sad, because people who promised to help them, end up hurting her feelings.

This kind of emotional story was always going to get lots of reactions from Nigerians and this one didn’t fail to get reactions. Many took to the comment section to blast the teenage girl’s mother and were gutted by her actions. Many went emotional and said encouraging words to the family.

According to their tradition, she has to come with a black soap and razor for the circumcision.

According to her, she had no clue about this strange family tradition before going into the marriage and every married woman gets circumcised in the family.

It was a night of cold tears and loud cries for the family of one Mr. Blessing Michael who suddenly met with death, after being stabbed on the neck and wounded severely by unknown persons assumed to be criminals at Ceddi Plaza, Abuja. Mr. Blessing was assassinated on his way to deliver one of his several printing services to Genesis Cinema, located at Ceddi Plaza, FCT Abuja.

According to reports, the police is presently investigating the situation to uncover perpetrators of the sad death of 25years old Blessing Michael, who was doing averagely well in his printing business. The Police and other authorities have urged the general public to come up with any relevant information that could support investigation into the death of the young Printer who was Stabbed at the neck by unknow assailant, leading to profuse bleeding and eventual his death.

As at the moment of this report, no relevant information have been provided as regards the possible Suspects responsible for the assassination of Blessing Micheal. Alleged fraudster, Hushpuppi, employs services of ex-govt lawyer as defence counsel

The embattled alleged fraudster, Ramon Abass popularly known as Hushpuppi has reportedly hired the services of the highly successful criminal defence lawyer, Loius Shapiro to represent him in his trial in the United States where he is facing fraud-related and money laundering charges.

Hushpuppi hired Shapiro after top Chicago lawyer, Gal Pissetzky and California-based criminal defence lawyer Vicki Podberesky, withdrew their services as his attorneys.

Both attorneys had accused the former Instagram celebrity of refusing to communicate to them.

After a Judge granted their withdrawal from the case on February 22, a request seeking the approval of Mr Shapiro as Hushpuppi’s new defence counsel was granted on Thursday, February 25.

Ripples Nigeria gathered that Mr Shapiro who earned his law degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, began his career with the New York State Attorney General, Elliot Spitzer.

Mr Shapiro, a certified criminal law specialist by the State Bar of California, serves as a Criminal Justice Act Federal Trial Panel attorney for the Central District of California.

A week later, the landlord evicted him and confiscated all household items because his mother had rent arrears of 5 months.

Homeless and abandoned by his family he became a street boy. A children’s home took him in, educated him up to class 8, then kicked him out to the streets again. Edward went back to being a street boy, 14 years old, where he was introduced to peddling drugs including bhang, glue and ’tap tap . He had several encounters with the police, he was harassed, arrested and released severally because his young age made him appear Innocent.

He narrowly escaped death when vigilantes attacked him and his friend, for selling drugs. He incurred a ‘panga’ cut on his head but his friend was not so lucky, he lost his life. The incident, made him turn a new leaf, and he started doing legal jobs.

To date, Edward had never met the rest of his family. He is now transformed, born again christian and hopes to become a celebrated artist. He still doesn’t Understand why his family left him at the cemetery but says he has forgiven them just as God forgave him and would wish to reunite with them.

Police Arrest Woman For Torturing Maid To Death In Lagos

It was learnt that the incident happened at 107 Femi Keller Street at Ago Palace Way in Okota, Lagos, where Mrs. Onyengo resided with the deceased.

It was learnt that after the victim died, Mrs. Onyengo hurriedly carried her corpse, travelled to the eastern part of the country and buried her in order to cover her track.

The late Ifunanya was a primary four pupil of Kusoru Primary School, Ilasa, Lagos, before she reportedly had internal bleeding and was taken to the hospital where she eventually died.

The matter was brought to the fore following the complaints by a Non -Governmental Organisation known as Child Protection Network, (CPN), Lagos, in a petition to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Imohimi Edgal, who then ordered for investigation on the ugly incident.

It was further gathered that the late Ifunanya was brought to Lagos by the woman, Mrs. Ada, as a house help some years ago.

The petition revealed that, ‘’she subjected her to constant beating and torture and was said to have inflicted injuries on her using grounded pepper, sticks and other objects.

‘’The injuries were so much that she was taken to an undisclosed hospital where she eventually died. Mrs. Onyengo was said to have rushed her body home and buried her.’’

But their neighbours and people in the school Ifunanya attended were aware of her condition and reported to the police who began to look for Mrs. Ada Onyengo to explain her role in the death of the house maid.

It was further learnt that the Divisional Police Officer, (DPO), A. Oyin, a Chief Superintendent of Police who led her team to the house did not meet the suspect as she was said to have gone to the market.

The police was said to have contacted her on phone and was asked to report to the station. She was said to have reported herself to the police for interrogation.

It was gathered that when the police went to the house, some of the residents escaped while others jumped through the fence because they knew what had happened to the victim and were said to be afraid that they might be asked to come and explain how Ifunanya was tortured to death by their neighbour.

According to the story the young damsel met the guy on Valentine’s day in Facebook. They chatted and they scheduled to meet each other in Abuja where the guy lives. The man promised to cater for the transportation fare of the girl from Lagos State to Abuja. The guy name is D-Boy. 

D-Boy phone was off and the girl became stranded as there is no way he could be reached. The girl continually dialled his phone number all to no avail. The people in Kubwa area of Abuja where the girl got stranded have contributed to assist her to travel back to Lagos. 

Many people blasted and blame the girl for coming all the way from Lagos State to Abuja to meet someone she has never met in real life. She took a big risk in the name of love. They advised her not to take such risk again. It is equally applicable to other ladies who are prone to such love deception. Many people have gone through such means.

Notwithstanding some people have gotten married by taking such risk and it worked for them.

“He Had Just 2 Exams Left To Graduate, He Was Beaten To Death Because Of N3,500”

There’s a popular saying that death is inevitable but then, no one deserves to die for a crime he or she didn’t commit. Even though it is true that everyone will die one-day but then, murder shouldn’t be one of the ways to die. No one deserves that.

Well, many people have been reacting to the death of a final year student which lead to the closure of the Kebbi State University Of Science and Technology. The university was shut down after a 22-year-old microbiology student was beaten to death. The 22-year-old student identified as Sharif was reported to have been beaten to death because of the sum of 3,500 naira. Sharif purchased a phone and immediately switched it off because he had an exam. A few hours later, Sharif realised that the payment he made for the phone was reversed because of network failure. After he saw the bank reversal, he went back to the place he bought the phone to tell them it was reversed. Sharif took cash along so that he could pay the 3,500 naira but on getting to the place, hoodlums attacked him for being a thief. He was badly beaten and was rushed to the general hospital. Unfortunately, sharif died shortly after his admission.

This story has stirred different reactions online. Many concerned Nigerians have expressed shock at the promising young man’s death. However, a Muslim lady reacted to the story by saying Sharif had just two (2) exams left to graduate, saying he was called a thief and a yahoo boy after he went back there.

Rangers International Football Club of Enugu still have the bragging rights in the Oriental derby after producing an easy 2-0 win over Heartland in Sunday’s matchday 13 fixture of the Nigeria Professional Football League.
The victory secured the seventh win this season for the Flying Antelope and shot them to second on the league table while the Naze Millionaires are recording a first defeat since matchday 7.
Rangers defender, Issac Loute scored a stunning goal from about 35 yards out when he curled a blazing shot past goalkeeper Emeka Nwabulu. It was a beauty!
Just before the break, Godspower Aniefiok made it two for coach Salisu Yusuf’s team. Substitute, Chinonso Eziekwe provided the assist for Aniefiok’s header.
In Uyo, Akwa United kept their fine form going with a 3-0 victory over Rivers United. Motivated with the point they earned on matchday 12 against Enyimba in Aba, the Promise Keepers swept aside the Pride of Rivers to keep maintain their unbeaten form at the Nest of Champions.
Mfon Udoh opened scoring for the Promise Keepers in the 40th minute and was doubled by Charles Atshimene when play resumed in second half.
Rivers United had a chance to pull one back when Kazi Enyinnaya made a run form the right side and sent a cross to Joseph Onoja whose shot went off target. Moments later, Akwa United responded with a goal scored by Morice Chukwu.

The win means Akwa United are yet to lose a match since their matchday 10 2-1 loss at Nasarawa United. The Promise Keepers are now 4th on the log with 22 points. For Rivers United, this is their fifth defeat this season and will hope to improve when they take on Plateau United in a rescheduled matchday 10 fixture in Jos on March 3rd.
Still in Uyo, Dakkada Football Club came from behind to record an emphatic 3-2 over Kano Pillars. The ever dependable Rabiu Ali gave Sai Masu Gida the lead from the spot just 10 minutes into the match.
Gerome Henchong doubled the lead for the visitors when he connected an assist from Auwalu Malam with his head. Just before half-time, Christian Ekong pulled one back for the home side.
When second half commenced, it didn’t take long before Ekong provided an assist for Phillip Archibong to score and put Dakkada back into the contest. The Chosen Ones kept pushing for the winner and were awarded a penalty when the hardworking Ekong was brought down in the box. Substitute Isaac George stepped up to the responsibility and scored to seal a remarkable comeback victory for Dakkada FC.
Kwara United returned to the top of the league table after recording a 2-0 win over Warri Wolves in Ilorin. The Harmony Boys are still unbeaten at home this season.
Coach Abdullahi Biffo’s team wasted no time in taking the lead through Stephen Jude’s long-range effort in the 8th minute. They doubled their lead through Michael Ohanu’s header in the second half and held on to it to seal the victory.
This is the 7th win for Kwara United and so far, they have lost 2, drawn 4, and still the surprise package of the season.
In Markurdi, Mathias Samuel scored a late goal to give Lobi Stars a 2-1 victory over Katsina United. Samuel’s long-range effort found the back of the net in the final seconds of added time. Chinonso Okonkwo scored the opener for the hosts and just when they thought they were good for the win, the visitors drew level in the 80th minute through Rasheed Ahmed’s goal.

Ada Ameh Speaks About Giving Birth Again After Losing Her Only Child

Veteran Nollywood actress Ada Ameh recently lost her only child, her daughter Aladi Godgift last year October 20, 2020, Aladi died at the age of 30-year-old. 

The actress Ada Ameh who is still inconsolable months after the sad incident spoke about slipping into depression after losing about 4 members of her family in the space of 2-years, but Aladi’s passing was the toughest for where she said even if she did give birth tomorrow, the child cannot replace her Aladi Godgift.

She tells Sunday Scoop,

“In the space of some years, I lost four members of my family. It was in 2018 after the death of my younger sister, Ajuma, who was a football coach, that I discovered I was suffering from depression. I had not even healed totally, when my daughter passed away. My family members, friends and colleagues stood by me and supported me with prayers. Empress Njamah became like a small mother to me. We have known each other for over 22 years. It has just been by the grace and mercy of God.
“I miss my daughter so much and I still have a large picture of her in my living room. My daughter died as an adult and we practically grew up together. I had her at the age of 14. She was more of a friend to me, than a daughter. It is not something I can ever forget. Even if I give birth again tomorrow, I cannot replace her. She was irreplaceable. She made me a better person. The way I value and appreciate people was because of her. In many ways, she made me who I am today. If I did not have her, perhaps, I would not have been the person I am today. She gave my life a new meaning and she made my journey much easier (cries).”

During the week, Ada Ameh had also lambasted a former Big Brother Naija contestant, Ka3na, for lampooning a fan that tattooed her name on her body. Reiterating her stance on the issue, she said, “Nigerians like to emulate the western world and there’s nothing bad about it, provided it is a good thing.

Ada Ameh also maintained that she would not encourage any fan to draw a tattoo of her. “No, I would not do that. I am a Christian and I believe in the word of God,” she said.
