Family of murdered Super TV boss, Usifo Ataga, breaks silence

The family of the late CEO of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, who was allegedly murdered by a 300-level student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Chidinma Ojukwu, has broken its silence, begging the public to respect their privacy.

In a statement on Sunday, the Ataga family said they should be allowed to mourn their late son in peace, while asking those who have useful information to reach the police and stop sending it to them.

The statement signed by one Dr Isi Ataga reads:

Here are the facts. A little over a week ago, unknown persons savagely killed our beloved son, Usifo Ataga. With no regard for him, or his family, who love him, they viciously ended his life.

“His children will grow up to read unkind, thoughtless words from thousands of people who have joined the lynching party in the press and the blogosphere.

“Our aging parents must now struggle to pick up the pieces amid a cacophony of misinformation propagated by strangers.

A suspect has been arrested and paraded before the press. We, the Ataga Family, are grateful to the Nigerian Police for pursuing this investigation.

“However, like you, we have many unanswered questions. Some things don’t add up.

“If you have any information, don’t hide behind online posts. Instead, come forward and share it with the Police.

“Here’s what we do know. The more you add to the false information in the press and on social media, the harder it is for the Nigerian Police to do their work and fully solve this case.

“The harder it is for a grieving family to recover from the loss of their beloved son.

We ask, sincerely, that you let us grieve this terrible loss with some privacy. This past week and a half has been the worst period of our lives.”

TB Joshua’s wife, Evelyn, may replace late cleric as General Overseer

There are insinuations that Mrs. Evelyn Joshua, the wife of the late pastor and founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) Temitope Joshua popularly known as TB Joshua, would replace her late husband as the head of the church.

According to a report by AfricaNews, the church’s elders met recently and declared Evelyn, the successor to the late televangelist.

The report quoted a top aide of the late preacher as saying, “Someone must take charge immediately and give spiritual direction on the mode of service continuity. So much spiritual and financial effort went into building SCOAN and it cannot just waste away.”

Evelyn had met the late pastor in 1990 when she traveled to Egbe to visit her sister, while the late preacher was said to have proposed to her on the same day they first met after a 45-minute session.

Evelyn was said to have been serving as the second-in-command to her husband before his death earlier this month, performing the role of a preacher and offering counselling to church members

The duo were married for 31 years and had three children together until Joshua’s death on June 5 at the age of 57.

The traditional rulers in Arigidi Akoko, the late televangelist’s hometown in Ondo had said the preacher would be buried in his hometown, however, the church elders intervened, and another decision was taken to bury him in his church at Ikotun, Lagos.

The weeklong event is scheduled to take place from July 5 to 11.

According to an Instagram post on Friday by the late cleric’s friend and media expert, Dele Momodu, a candlelight procession will be held on July 5, while a tribute service and service of songs/all-night praise will be held on July 6 and 7.

Also, Joshua’s lying-in-state is to be held on July 8, while the funeral and interment will follow on July 9. A thanksgiving service is scheduled for July 11, while all services will be broadcast live on Emmanuel TV.

SCOAN also assured its members that worship would not stop at the church, following its shutdown since Joshua’s demise.

Iyabo Ojo, Nkechi Blessing get stern warning for unruly behaviour

The Board of Trustees of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria, (TAMPAAN) has issued a stern warning to actresses, Iyabo Ojo and Nkechi Blessing for their unruly behaviour.

Specifically, the association stated this at a press briefing on Saturday, June 26 that they will no longer tolerate the derogatory remarks and embarrassments from the aforementioned actresses.

Recall a couple of weeks ago, Nkechi Blessing was suspended for her involvement in an altercation with colleague, Kehinde Adams better known as Lege Miami on social following the arrest of alleged paedophile, Baba Ijesha real name Omiyinka Olanrewaju. While, Iyabo Ojo was accused of insulting other actors for keeping mute about the alleged rape issue.

Speaking on behalf of the Board of Trustees, the veteran actor, Chief Jide Kosoko, stated;

“We particularly observe the continuous derogatory statements made by Iyabo Ojo against the association and the industry as a whole.”

Nothing that they were against all forms of sexual assault, the communique accused Iyabo Ojo’s of “reckless accusations, abuses and embarrassment of our sector”.

“If we allow the continuous blackmail to go unchecked, the current situation will continue to grow to the detriment of humble practitioners, whose only source of livelihood is the practice of Indigenous language movies.

Unfortunately, Nkechi Blessing has also joined in the Ignoble tirades against the Association and by extension, the industry and we say enough is enough!

Without the platform God gave you and many others of your likes through us to climb up the ladder and express your creativity, you may not be this visible today.”

On the views of Deji Aderemi, popularly known as Olofa Ina, the elders said his comments were personal.

“The association does not condone immorality. If two consenting adults decide to have things in common, it does not mean that it is the standard practice.

“The utterances from the likes of Iyabo Ojo, Nkechi Blessing and others are regarded as unfortunate words spoken by people who should know better as they have benefitted immensely from the association and industry.”

Meanwhile, Baba Ijesha faces six-count charges bordering on the indecent treatment of a child, sexual assault, sexual assault by penetration, among others.

But Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja on Thursday, June 24, granted him N2 million bail.

Women often reject me because I’m albino – Expatriate Comedian

Fast-rising Nigerian comedian and skit-maker, Donald Ernest, popularly known as Expatriate Comedian, has opened up about his life as a social media celebrity.

He revealed during an interview with The Punch that he often gets rejected by women because of the fact that he’s albino.

Read Excerpts from the chat below:

Why do you call yourself ‘Expatriate Comedian’?

I am from Etsako East Local Government Area in Edo State. I call myself ‘Expatriate’ because I feel it is a good and catchy name for a comedian. An expatriate is ‘person who lives outside their native country.’ Because of the way I look (as an albino), I decided to adopt that name.

When did you realise you were good at comedy?

Growing up, I played around a lot and I made people laugh. People always told me I was funny and could make people laugh. That was when I knew I could actually do comedy.

When did you start comedy and content creation full-time?

I started comedy full-time in 2018. But, I actually delved into it in 2010 but I stopped after some time. I tried again in 2016 and I also stopped. But, in 2018, I took it up fully as a career. I love comedy so much.

What creative process goes into making your skits?

Firstly, it’s a passion. And because I have a passion for it, it is very seamless for me. I do it with ease, devoid of stress. Most things I say on set come naturally to me. They are not rehearsed. The words, the sense of humour are not things I plan. 95 per cent of what I say in skits are spontaneous.

Which has been the most challenging skit for you to make?

I have a range of styles but none has been challenging to me, so far. That is because I am still discovering myself. I am still learning more about my comedy, so none has been challenging for now. At the same time, I don’t consider any skit to be more interesting than others because I am still discovering myself and trying to broaden my scope. I usually say that ‘Expatriate is my best skit maker’. Not because it’s me, but because the person doing it does it at ease. There are skits I shoot that I don’t find funny, and I don’t like them. I only watch them once and move on.

Some online comedians are switching to mainstream filmmaking. Do you see yourself doing that anytime soon?

Yes, I would definitely do that. That is one of my prayers and I know that it will come to pass by God’s grace. I am not stopping at skit-making. I intend to go into filmmaking as well. And, I am not just talking about Nollywood, I have my eyes on Hollywood as well.

Many entertainers find it hard to gain approval from their family and friends for their careers. Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to embark on this journey?

When I was doing music, my parents did not support me. How would they now support my comedy career? If one has not been able to do anything meaningful with one’s career or it is not yielding positive results, most times, people would not support one, especially in this part of the world. Only my younger siblings knew I was doing comedy. They did not even believe I was going to stay this long because they knew I had been switching between music and comedy. I don’t need anybody’s approval for whatever I want to do. I put so much energy, passion and love into whatever I do. Some of my friends did not believe in me and they did not support me. One’s friends could say that one is funny but they may not buy into the idea of one doing comedy full-time. However, the same people who didn’t believe my capabilities now welcome it.

How do you combine being a stand-up comedian with being an online content creator?

I started my career as a stand-up comedian, which I love so much. I actually believe that stand-up comedy is more difficult than online comedy. But, it is what I started with and I love it so much. I enjoy rehearsing and performing on stage but stand-up comedy could be quite tedious. Thankfully, I am still able to do both without stress.

People have different views about albinos. Have you ever been discriminated against on account of that?

In this part of the world, people have different views about albinos. And, I have been discriminated against because of that. Whenever I approach women, they often say, ‘I don’t like albinos.’ I am used to it though. However, I have noticed that people are more accepting of albinos now, unlike what obtained in the past. But, I don’t care. I have no apology for who I am.

What does being an albino mean to you?

Being an albino does not mean anything to me. I wrote a song sometime ago where I stated that the difference between albinos and people with dark skin was just the shortsightedness and skin tone of albinos. In my head, I feel normal. The only thing difference is that I cannot see far and my skin lacks melanin. There is no difference between someone with dark skin and an albino. It is not something I spare a lot of thoughts for. If I travel out of the country, I believe that I would blend in unnoticed and be more accepted. If someone says I cannot do something, I would prove them wrong by doing it well.

Have you ever enjoyed any privileges because you’re an albino?

Yes, I do enjoy some privileges because of who I am. For example, in 2019, I went to register for a voters’ card and the place was crowded. There were hundreds of people ahead of me when I got there but one of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s personnel noticed me. Immediately she saw me, she told me to leave where I was standing under the sun. She then apologised to the people that were there before me, and told them that she would like to attend to me first.

What are the things people don’t know about albinos that you would like them to know?

In this part of the world, people are not that educated about certain things and albinism is one of them. Albinism is simply the lack of melanin in one’s skin. Aside from that and short-sightedness, every other thing is the same with any normal person.

Do you consider yourself a beacon of hope to albinos who want to get into the creative sector?

Well, yes. There are a bunch of albinos coming behind me. Now that I have scaled hurdles to get to this level, I believe more albinos will come along and they will be accepted. So indeed, I consider myself a beacon of hope for albinos who want to go into the entertainment industry. It is the encouragement they get from what I do that would make them look up to me.

What have you gained from being a content creator and a comedian?

I have gained popularity and acceptance. As for material things, I have not gained anything much yet, but I know that would definitely come.

What is your assessment of the comedy industry in Nigeria?

The comedy industry in Nigeria is not organised because there are no structures on the ground for up-and-coming comedians to follow. To me, it is more like a jungle. There are no standard comedy clubs that could aid the development of comedy in Nigeria. It is more of a comic scene than an industry. I feel it is still growing. By God’s grace, my generation would try to restructure things, so that it would be a better industry for people to show their talents and creativity.

Any man that can control his sexual urge has solved 80 percent of his problems – Actress, Nkiru Umeh

According to her, any man that can control his sexual urge has solved 80% of his problems on earth.

She wrote; “From the generation in the Bible to this 21st century. Sex has been the easiest and fastest means of destruction for men. Great men go down like chickens because of sexual urge.

Men deny competent women positions, contracts, sponsorships, favors….and this list goes on….because of sexual urge. I repeat! Any man that has control over this, has really solved 80% of his problems on earth.

And my fellow parents…. apply pressure…. do we really know our kids….ask questions when things are not adding up….. pay attention parents, pay attention!!! You can’t be securing the bags and loose your offsprings. God help us to parent better, bad parenting is a big problem.

The society we want starts from what we are breeding in our homes. May God console both families. May the dead find rest and may the living learn from this. I rest my case”

Why I was banned from Nollywood – Veteran actress, Rita Dominic reveals

Talented Nigerian actress, Rita Dominic has opened up on the reason she once got a silent ban from the industry.

The Nollywood veteran bared her mind in an interview with journalist and media entrepreneur, Chude Jideonwo.

When asked if she has enjoyed her last 23 years in the industry, Dominic said that she has had her high moments and her low moments.

Chude further probed on what her low moment was, and the movie star responded saying:

So let me tell you something, I don’t know if I’ve said this publicly. Many years ago, we worked a lot with the marketers and they weren’t used to talking to management, they were used to easy access, direct access to us. So I started working with a manager which is my business partner Mildred because she manages my career as well and it was a challenge.

”But I was bent on changing things at least for myself cuz I felt like we needed some sort of structure if we wanted to grow – if we wanted this to go further or advance our careers, we needed to start letting them understand that we have management. So obviously, they didn’t like it but they didn’t…

”let me put it this way: I think they gave me a silent ban without saying anything. I used to trickle down certain things that they would say, a few of them, and I can understand. You know, people don’t like change sometimes especially when it’s been the same thing for so long and it has worked for you. I didn’t get work for a long time!

Before then, Mildred and I had been talking. She had already started producing and we had toyed with the idea of forming a company together and shooting productions and adverts. So when that (ban) lingered for a while, I said you know what?

Let’s go ahead with this thing – let’s produce content. That’s how I was put on this other trajectory and I started producing. I did my first film, ‘The Meeting’ and I wasn’t going to do the role but we ended up doing it and The Meeting became very successful.

So the (ban) in a way was a blessing. Sometimes, the powers that be (the universe) may be moving you in a direction you don’t want because you want things to happen in a certain way, but it might actually let you achieve the same goal through a different route.”
