One person sustained life-threatening injuries, a spokesman said near the scene of the accident.

The spokesperson said vessels collided near the Köhlbrand bridge in southwestern Hamburg at around 6:43 a.m. (0543 GMT), adding that 25 people were affected by the accident.

The transport ship, a barge, had come loose, but the spokesman said it was initially unclear why.

Barges were flat-bottomed boats with no drive to transport goods on canals and rivers.

Hamburg was a seaport on the Elbe river, some 100 kilometres from its mouth on the North Sea.

It’s Germany’s biggest seaport and one of the busiest in Europe.
