Seven passengers burnt to death near Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos

A commercial bus on Sunday, September 25, caught fire at Iyana Oworo near the Third Mainland Bridge, killing seven passengers while others were injured.

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) which confirmed the incident, said when officials of the agency arrived at the scene, they saw that a commercial bus with 14 passengers was on fire.

The Mazda bus with registration number KJA 699 GY, reportedly caught fire due to recklessness and speeding by the driver.

Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said while the driver escaped with some burns, three female adults were rescued and rushed to Gbagada General Hospital while a male adult was attended to by LASAMBUS at the scene.

Seven victims including four females, two male adults and one male child in the bus were burnt to death. The remains have been bagged by the Agency’s LRT Paramedics, LASAMBUS official and handed over to the appropriate authorities.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu added; “Arrangements have been made by LASTMA officials at the scene for removal of the burnt vehicle from the road.”

A driver of a bus created a mild drama along the road leading to Lagos Island on Tuesday, August 16, when he abandoned his vehicle and fled off after he was stopped by security men attached to the convoy of the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The bus driver was driving against traffic when he ran into the convoy of the governor. For fear of being arrested, he took to his heels and abandoned his vehicle on the road.

Man causes stir as he proposes to girlfriend on Third Mainland bridge

A Nigerian has taken marriage proposal to a new level with his recent stunt on the popular Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos state.

The man who is a power bike rider and a photographer proposed to his girlfriend on the bridge with the aid of friends.

They drove their power bikes to the bridge to see a pleasOn reaching there, a car was already parked by the side of the ever busy bridge with the inscription; ”Would You Marry Me Bukola??”ant surprise waiting for the lady.

Four bike riders were also positioned with their bikes in front of the car, and they each rocked white T-shirts. The back of the each person’s shirt had one word from the Will You Marry Me proposal question.

Third Mainland Bridge To Be Reopened At Midnight.

The Third Mainland Bridge will be reopened at midnight following the closure for repairs on the bridge.

The Federal Controller of Works Lagos, Mr Olukayode Popoola, confirmed this on Sunday.

According to Popoola, the contractor was able to achieve the task within 48 hours, contrary to the initially scheduled 72-hour timeframe.

“We have completed the casting of the three number expansion joints on Third Mainland bridge.

“Therefore, the bridge shall be opened at 12:00 midnight Sunday 27th December, and no longer Monday 28th December.

“That is 48 hours and no more 72 hours,” Popoola said.

The closure of portions of the bridge which commenced earlier in the year, had initially been scheduled to last six months and divided into two phases of three months on each carriageway.
The process was, however, extended by one month due to the recent #EndSARS protests in Lagos, thereby extending the completion date from January 2021 to February.

For the yuletide season, which was also a public holiday, the bridge had to be shut down totally in order to stop vibrations caused by the movement of vehicles.
