Court sentences man to death by hanging for armed robbery

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Monday sentenced a 20-year-old man, Nojeem Badmos, to death by hanging for armed robbery.

Delivering judgment, Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe, held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt, the ingredients of the two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and armed robbery.

Mrs Abike-Fadipe described the defendant’s account of the incident as inconsistent.

According to her, evidence of the prosecution witness, Adetokunbo Solomon (victim), were proven cogent and true. She held that the defendant in company of two others still at large did rob Solomon of his bag and other valuables early one morning as he stood at a bus stop on his way to work sometime in July 2019.

Mrs Abike-Fadipe said;

“On his way to work at the bus stop somewhere in Alagbado area of the state, noticed a motorcyclist carrying two passengers approaching him.

“He suspected danger and began to run but the two passengers on the bike came down and ran after him. He fell in the mud and the two others chased after him, caught up with him and beat him up.

Justice Abike-Fadipe said;

“In respect to the offence of conspiracy to commit robbery, I sentence you to 21 years jail term.

“In respect to armed robbery having being found guilty, you will be hanged on the neck until you are dead and may the Lord have mercy on you.”

Meanwhile, the judge told the defence counsel that the law was clear on the punishment of armed robbery, however, gave him an opportunity for his allocutus.

The defence counsel, Ajibade Benson, in his allocutus prayed for the court to be lenient as the defendant was a first time offender.

Prosecution counsel Adebanke Ogunde did not object to the judgement. Conspiracy and armed robbery contravenes the provisions of sections 299 and 297 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

Oladejo made the submission in her counter argument in the divorce suit filed by her husband.

”My Lord, I am yet to recover from the shock I experienced when a gang of thieves raided our house. He hid in the toilet, leaving me to pant in front of the armed robbers, who terrorised the entire residents of the house.

Woman saves man who was sentenced to life imprisonment for shooting her during a robbery 31 years ago

A man identified as Ian Manuel recently had his life imprisonment sentence overturned with the help of a lady he had shot 31 years ago.

He had already spent 26 years in jail before she saved him after reviewing the details of the incident.

People reports that in 1990, a lady named Debbie Baigrie was out with friends after the delivery of her second child in Florida, US when Manuel who was 13 years old at time attempted to rob her.

It was said that a young Manuel was under peer pressure from older teens to carry out a robbery that evening and Debbie was the unlucky victim.

Manuel shot Debbie in the mouth and this affected her jaw and some of her teeth. Today reports that Manuel (who had a history of minor criminal offences) was later arrested for an unrelated incident and put behind bars where he confessed to being the person who shot Debbie in the mouth. This consequently got him a life imprisonment.

Debbie later learnt in a newspaper that Manuel was 13 years old when the robbery happened and this touched her. Manuel, according to Goalcast, placed a call across to the lady he hurt, apologized and began sending letters.

She also sent letters in response after forgiving him and followed up with Manuel’s court case seeking to overturn the life imprisonment judgement.

Manuel was eventually released from prison and kissed Debbie upon their first reunion on the same spot had shot her. The lady sees Manuel – who lot his biological mum and relatives while in prison – as an adopted son.

Ogun guard allegedly hires area boys to rob employer

Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 47-year-old security man, Adamu Ibrahim, for allegedly hiring area boys to rob his employer.

However, the area boys, Ajibola Yusuf and Bakare Ifakayode, leaked the information to the police.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Sunday.

Oyeyemi explained that Ibrahim was a guard attached to the Inspiration Filling  Station at Matogun, Agbado, in the Ifo Local Government Area of the state.

According to Oyeyemi, the two area boys reported at the Agbado divisional headquarters that they received a phone call from the suspect that the manager of the filling station would be leaving the station around 8pm with huge sums of money running into N3m.

He said, “They reported further that the suspect, who described the manager and his motorcycle to them, instructed them to ambush, rob him of the money and kill him so that nobody would trace the incident to them.

They stated further that the suspect believed that being area boys, they would be useful for him to realise his devilish plan. But they said though they are area boys, they are not armed robbers.

“Upon the information, the DPO Agbado division, SP Kehinde kuranga, asked them to continue playing along with the suspect, while he detailed his detectives to be on his trail.

“The suspect continued calling the duo and giving them the description of the manager and the route he would be passing through, when the police swooped on him and got him arrested.

Initially, he denied planning any robbery with anybody, but when confronted with his supposed accomplices, he owned up to the crime.

“On further interrogation, he confessed to the police that the two people he contracted resembled those who had earlier robbed the same station years ago and that was the reason he thought he could confide in them to carry out another robbery which he would benefit from.”

The PPRO, however, said the state Commissioner of Police, Edward  Ajogun, had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.

He said the commissioner appealed to members of the public, especially business owners, to always do background checks on anyone they wanted to employ in order not to employ criminals.
