Head of Peruvian rebel group, Shining Path, dies in prison

The founder of Peruvian rebel group, Shining Path, Abimael Guzman, has died in prison at the age of 86.

Guzman, who has been in prison after he was captured in 1992 in Peru’s capital, Lima, and jailed for the rest of his life after being convicted as a “terrorist”, died in his cell on Saturday, as he was set to receive more medical attention.

Guzman and his group, Sendero Luminoso, or Shining Path in English, nearly overthrew the Peruvian state in a bloody Maoist revolution, according to state media.

Susana Silva, head of Peru’s prison system, told RPP radio on Saturday that Guzman had been ill in recent months and had been released from a hospital in early August.

She said his health condition worsened in the past two days, without elaborating further, adding that Guzman was set to receive more medical attention on Saturday but died in his cell at about 6:40am local time.

A former philosophy professor, Guzman was a lifelong communist who travelled to China in the late 1960s and was awed by Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution.

He resolved to bring Mao’s brand of communism to Peru through a class war that he launched in 1980.

On getting back to his country, he founded the Shining Path, transforming it from a ragtag band of peasants and radical students into a potent rebel group.

An estimated 69,000 people, mostly in Peru’s poor interior, were killed between 1980 and 2000 in the internal conflict launched by the Shining Path.

Shining Path’s bold and immaculately planned attacks, its networks of informants and spies, and Guzman’s uncanny ability to evade arrest gave him an almost legendary reputation for seeming to be in all places at once.

His followers called Guzman the Fourth Sword of Marxism, after Marx, Lenin and Mao, and idolised him in revolutionary chants, songs, posters and literature.

He studied law and philosophy at the University of San Agustin in Arequipa, where he wrote two graduate theses: “The Theory of Space in Kant’ and another on law titled ‘The Democratic-Bourgeois State.’

After Guzman was captured by police at a spacious safe house in Lima in 1992 and sentenced to life imprisonment, the Shining Path largely collapsed as a military threat, although remnants remain to this day.

In 2018, Guzman was given a second life sentence for a 1992 Lima car bomb attack that killed 25 people.

Ex-President Zuma released from prison on medical parole

Former South African President, Jacob Zuma, has been released from prison on medical parole due to ill health, officials of the country’s correctional services department said on Sunday.

The 79-year-old Zuma has been serving a 15-month prison sentence since July for contempt of court after defying a summons to appear at an inquiry into corruption during his time in office.

A statement by the spokesperson of South Africa‘s Department of Correctional Services (DCS), said:
“Medical parole placement for Mr Zuma means that he will complete the remainder of the sentence in the system of community corrections, whereby he must comply with a specific set of conditions and will be subjected to supervision until his sentence expires.”

Last month, Zuma was admitted to an outside hospital where he underwent surgeries for an undisclosed ailment, according to prison authorities.

The DCS said it was “impelled” to grant Zuma medical parole after receiving a medical report.

“Apart from being terminally ill and physically incapacitated, inmates suffering from an illness that severely limits their daily activity or self-care can also be considered for medical parole,” the statement said.

The DCS appealed to South Africans “to afford Mr Zuma dignity as he continues to receive medical treatment.”

Zuma served as president from 2009 to 2018 and was once widely celebrated as a key figure in the country’s liberation movement.

But his nine years in power were marred with allegations of high-level corruption, which he has repeatedly denied.

Zuma is accused of corruption involving three businessmen close to him — brothers Atul, Ajay and Rajesh Gupta — and allowing them to influence government policy, including the hiring and firing of ministers to align with the family’s business interests.

Senator Abaribe should be in prison for not producing Nnamdi Kanu – Deputy Speaker

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase has said that the Minority Leader of the Senate, Enyinnaya Abaribe should be in prison for failing to produce leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu who he stood as a surety for in court.

Wase, who represents Plateau state in the Green chamber, said this while responding to a Point of Order raised by Sada Soli of Katsina state during plenary on Thursday May 6.

He backed his claim with the imprisonment of Borno state lawmaker, Senator Ali Ndume by Justice Okon Abang for failing to produce Abdulrasheed Maina, former head of the defunct Pension Reformed Task Team (PRTT) whom he had stood for as surety.

The Deputy Speaker said; “Ordinarily, for failing to produce Kanu Nnamdi, he (Sen Abaribe) should be in prison, just like Ndume was taken to prison.

I see somebody as Abaribe, who is the leader in the senate, championing that. Yes, there are many flaws. He bailed Kanu Nnamdi and during the ENDSARS, we knew what happened. Kanu then was the one who was asking for the head of Tinubu, destroy this, destroy that in the nation. But we have allowed him. He knew what happened to Ndume.

“Ndume for bailing Maina was taken to prison for not producing him, but we allowed this man to go as opposition person. And that is why they could send everything back to the person. I am a presiding officer, I wish to be neutral as much as possible.”

The APC Senator also accused House Minority Leader, Ndidi Elumelu of mis-respresenting what happened at the executive session of the lower chamber of the national assembly.

He said; “Mr Speaker, it was a confidential matter. You know the meaning of executive session. He couldn’t have gone there to report that one. Mr Speaker, I want to say that there is a kind of false platform that I am seeing because after that meeting sir, PDP caucus of both chambers went and had another discussion, a kind of build-up on the security situation. And I think Mr Speaker, we need to be serious.

I think there is a need for us, as a system, to change our tactics. It is not about opposition. If you are going to do opposition, do opposition that is right, give factual views and also be part of the solution to problems.”

Uzoma Abonta, representing Abia state, however countered Wase’s claim by stating that Nnamdi Kanu jumped bail after the military invaded his home. He also pointed out that the matter was already in court and making such a demand will amount to interfering in a judicial decision.

Abonta said; “The last contact the man in question had was with the military. The Senator who bailed the man was going to court regularly. The senator did not default. He was called to show cause and he showed cause successfully. Why is it a point of reference in the parliament?”

El-Zakzaky’s wife tests positive for COVID-19 in Kaduna prison

The family of Ibraheem El-Zakzakky, the detained leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as Shiites, has revealed that his wife, Zeenat, has contracted the COVID-19 virus while in detention at the Kaduna Prison.

The duo have been in detention since 2015 after being charged with culpable homicide and other sundry offences following a clash between his protesting members and operatives of the Nigerian Army who waylayed the convoy of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, leading to the killings of hundreds of the protesters.

Making the revelation in a press statement on Thursday, one of the sons of the IMN leader, Mohammad, said his mother is yet to be evacuated despite informing authorities about her status, an act he described as an “assassination tool.”

In the statement, Mohammad said:

“Six days ago, after a routine visit to the Kaduna State prison by my parents’ doctors, my mother complained of fatigue, fever and a complete loss of the ability to smell.

“The doctors decided to carry out a number of standard tests in order to understand what the problem was. Among the tests that were carried out was a test for the novel coronavirus.

“This was a routine procedure and it is important to state that she has been denied treatment for acute medical conditions, including severe arthritis of the knee for years now.

“Meanwhile, the COVID-19 test came back positive. I imagined that due to the diligent way in which the prison management had been conducting and managing the facility, a COVID-19 outbreak would be extremely unlikely.

“But once I heard of the test result, my first action was to ensure that it was tried, tested and confirmed.

“I expected that following our risky entrance into the predictable ‘petri dish’ of Kaduna State prison for what it is, the person in charge of Kaduna State prison would officially do his job and inform the State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and the chain of command that the current campaign of torture, extortion, corruption and murder has come to this and my mother, Zeenah Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, needs to be immediately hospitalized.

“My mother is still in Kaduna prison at the moment, yet to be hospitalized and to receive proper health care.”

Priest and Nun sentenced to life in prison

A Catholic priest and nun have been sentenced to life in prison for the killing of another member of their convent in India nearly 30 years ago.

Father Thomas Kottoor and Sister Sephy were convicted on Tuesday of murdering 21-year-old Sister Abhaya in 1992, and destroying evidence of the killing.

The pair killed her after she came across them engaged in illicit sexual activity.

Local police originally thought the young nun had taken her own life.

But further investigations were launched following suspicions about her death from family and campaigners.

Sephy, 55, has not publicly commented on the ruling, but Kottoor, 69, insisted he was innocent.

“I have done no wrong. God is with me,” he told local media outside court on Wednesday, when he was sentenced.

A third priest, Fr Jose Poothrikkayil, was accused by prosecutors of also having an illicit relationship with Sephy. He was arrested and charged over the murder in 2008 but later acquitted due to a lack of evidence.

Sr Abhaya’s body was found in a well at St Pius X convent in Kottayam, a city in southern India.

A court ruled that, before her death, she awoke in the early hours of 27 March 1992 and walked into the convent’s kitchen to fetch water from a fridge.

While in the kitchen, she caught Kottoor and Sephy in a compromising position.

Fearing she would disclose her discovery, the pair killed her and disposed of her body, the court ruled.

Investigations into the young nun’s death have been a highly contentious issue in India.

Local and state police initially ruled that she had taken her own life. India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) later took over the case in 1993 and found she had been murdered, but did not identify any suspects.

After a high court order in 2008, the CBI renewed its investigation and arrested and charged Kottoor, Sephy and Fr Jose Poothrikkayil, but they were released on bail. A lengthy trial process followed.

“Sister Abhaya’s case has finally got justice. She will rest in peace,” said human right activist Jomon Puthenpurackal, who has campaigned for a verdict on the murder.
