Police officer comes under fire after boasting that a LASTMA official changed his mind about arresting him when he realised he’s a policeman

A police officer has come under fire on social media, after he revealed that he escaped arrest for breaking a road traffic law when the LASTMA official realised he is a policeman. Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi tweeted:

“I was driving today in abuja, and one road safety officer who wanted to arrest me for using phone, heard me instructing the DPO to put one person in d cell, he just saluted me, and passed me.

“This is to say ‘to every rule, there must be an exception to save some situations’. Lol.”

His tweet generated mixed reactions, with many accusing him of boasting about getting away with impunity.

Many pointed out that regular citizens would have been arrested and fined for using a phone while driving but the officer was exempted and he still went online to talk about it.

They also questioned why the LASTMA official didn’t carry out his duties without fear or favour.

31 policemen dismissed, others sanctioned over 14,976 complaints

The Complaint Response Unit of the Nigeria Police Force has received 14,976 complaints against policemen since its inception, The PUNCH has learnt.

The unit, which was established in 2015 to receive complaints from citizens against erring policemen, stated in a report, obtained by our correspondent on Tuesday, that no fewer than 11,567 complaints have been resolved, and over 258 officers have been punished.

It noted that 31 policemen have been dismissed while eight others are undergoing orderly room trials.

The unit added a total of N55.6m was recovered and returned to their owners between 2015 and 2021.

In 2021 alone, the unit said it received a total of 1,244 complaints against policemen nationwide.

It added that out of the complaints, 876 had been resolved, 351 are currently being investigated and 25 of the complaints, after investigations, were found to be false.

The unit also noted that in 2021, the Lagos State Police Command recorded the highest number of cases with 327 complaints, followed by the Federal Capital Territory Command which had 210. Delta State Command recorded 85 complaints while Rivers State Command ranked fourth with 80 complaints.

The document read in part, “Commands/formations with the highest cases of professional misconduct in Nigeria are state headquarters in Rivers State with 16 cases; Federal Headquarters (15); Abattoir in FHQ (15); FCT Command (13); Ikeja in Lagos (9); Alagbon in Lagos (5) Maitama Division in FCT (4); Kubwa Division in FCT (4); FESTAC Division in Lagos State (4) and Chouba Area Command in Rivers State (4).

“The Rivers State Command headquarters recorded the highest cases of demanding money for bail, while the top four formations accused of demanding money for bail were recorded in Rivers State. This indicates the need for review of leadership in these formations.

“The Rivers State Command headquarters recorded the most excessive use of force complaints nationwide, followed by the Meiran Division and state headquarters, Lagos, then FCT.”

The Executive Director, Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, Okechukwu Nwanguma, commended the unit, adding that the report would help the police to take necessary action to cleanse the force.

He said, “First of all, this would be the first time that the CRU would be publishing and presenting its quarterly report publicly. It is a testament to how transparent and accountable the CRU is under its current leadership.

“You could see that Rivers State has the highest number of complaints.  This should send a message to the Rivers State police authorities to look inwards and address this bad record.

“For states that recorded low numbers, it is also important to find out whether this is an indication of low levels of misconduct by police personnel in those states, or low levels of awareness about the CRU or lack of knowledge of how to report complaints.”

The Chairman, Centre for Anti-corruption and Open Leadership, Debo Adeniran, urged the unit to do more of this to help the police redeem its stained image.

He said, “They are on the right track, not minding the amount being recovered among others. That they recognised that their personnel engage in corrupt practices and other unethical practices is commendable.

“This would make other personnel with the mindset to abuse their position to have a rethink. In general, we need more of this for them to redeem their battered image and restore confidence of the populace in the NPF. We urge them to step up and improve on this internal cleansing.”

Bandits Demand N100m To Release Six Policemen In Katsina.

Findings indicated that the families of the missing police officers were anxious about the safety of their breadwinners following the N100m ransom demanded by the bandits.

The bandits holding six Assistant Superintendents of Police captive in Katsina State for over one week are demanding N100m ransom for their release.

The PUNCH reports that the ASPs were among the nine who were just promoted to their current rank. They were attached to the Mobile Police Squadron 6, Maiduguri, Borno State.

Findings on Wednesday indicated that they were demobilised from the riot unit and eight of them were on their way to the Zamfara State Police Command on the transfer when they were ambushed in the Dogondaji area of Katsina State and taken into the forest.

A reliable police source explained that the nine ASPs were planning to go to Zamfara State together, but one of them changed his mind at the last minute while the others embarked on the trip in a commercial bus.

On getting to Kano, the driver was said to have asked them to join another vehicle as his bus had developed a fault.

The source said, “When they were released to go to Zamfara, they scheduled a day for the trip from Maiduguri, but one of them said he wasn’t comfortable with the journey and declined to join them. He said he had something to do and promised to join them in Zamfara later.

“So, the eight others left, but on getting to Kano, the driver said he couldn’t continue the journey to Zamfara, because his vehicle had developed a fault. They joined another vehicle, and on their way around Dongodaji in Katsina State, the bandits accosted and kidnapped them.

“While being taken away, two of them escaped, and one of them was shot in the leg though he didn’t die. He found himself at a village, and the villagers took him to a police station, and he was taken to a hospital. The other six officers are still with the bandits who are demanding N100m ransom.”

A senior police officer said the Commander, Mopol 6, could not account for the men when asked about their abduction, adding that he referred inquiries on the missing men to the Zamfara State Police Command.

The officer explained that the standard procedure was for the commander to send a signal to the Zamfara command informing it that he had released the nine ASPs, but he allegedly failed to follow the official procedure.

The source stated, “The problem came from the Commander, Mopol 6, their former squadron leader, who released them on transfer to Zamfara. He was supposed to relay the information on the kidnap incident, but he said he didn’t know about it when he was asked; instead, he referred inquiries to the Zamfara State Police Command.

“The commander should have sent a signal that the men had been released to go to Zamfara, but he didn’t do that. Normally, the Zamfara command would send a signal to Borno confirming that the men had resumed.”

Findings indicated that the families of the missing police officers were anxious about the safety of their breadwinners following the N100m ransom demanded by the bandits.

It was learnt that the families were attempting to raise N3m for the release of the captives or N500,000 each.

The Force spokesman, DCP Frank Mba, had yet to respond to inquiries on the incident as he did not respond to calls and SMS sent to his mobile telephone as of the time of filing in this report.

When contacted by one of our correspondents, one of the officers, who escaped from the abductors, said he was too weak to recount the incident.

“I have high BP (blood pressure); I just came back from a check-up. I cannot remember everything now. The incident happened on Sunday along the Katsina-Gusau Road,” he said.

The Public Relations Officer, Borno State Police Command, DSP Edet Okon, said there was no reported case of policemen from the command being abducted, adding that the alleged victims were no longer serving at the command because they had been transferred.

“The Borno State Police Command has not received any signal in respect of her officers being abducted. The alleged abduction of officers is still unknown to us as we have yet to receive any alert on the matter. That is the official position of the command as of this moment,” Okon stated.

When Punch visited the Mopol 6 base in Maiduguri, he observed that police personnel were overwhelmed by the kidnap of their colleagues, which came weeks after some of their men were killed and several others injured during an attack on the convoy of the Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum.

The mood in the barracks was very sober with little or no activity going on except for a few anti-riot policemen in uniform clustered in groups discussing the incident.

It was gathered that some personnel of the command were recently attacked at the Bama Local Government Area of the state and the latest development had dampened the morale of the policemen.

The PUNCH did not see women and children in the barracks except for a few at the market square. Except for the command headquarters, where some cops were sighted sitting under trees and in other strategic locations, the entire barracks, which houses a police training college, state police command and Mopol 6 base, was scanty.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Hakeem Odumosu, has warned officers and men of the Command against negligence, indolence and complacency.

He gave the warning on Friday in a statement by Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

Some policemen are yet to resume or have been working inadequately since the End SARS protests.

Odumosu declared that dereliction of duty will no longer be condoned.

Odumosu disclosed that he had read the riot act to those not performing their statutory obligation as expected.

“Even the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and well-meaning Nigerians, including our wives and mothers, the Police Officers Wives Association have encouraged officers to assume duty. We cannot handle the security of Lagos State with levity.”

He vowed that such operative will be dealt with according to the provisions of the Police Act and Regulations.

The workers were demanding an increment in their salaries when the incident happened.

One of the workers said the company invited the police to disperse them as they converged today.

“Workers are fighting for increment of salary since last week.

“Because of the protest, Dangote ordered everybody to stop work.

“As we were protesting this morning, someone was killed by the police. His body has been taken to the hospital,” said one of the workers in a video obtained by SaharaReporters.

The incident has led to unrest in the area as angry youth invaded the entrance of the company.

They also started a bonfire while protesting the killing of the worker.

The company said the workers were not directly employed by Dangote Refinery but through a contractor, Onshore.

A spokesperson for Dangote Group said the workers were engaged by a contractor but the group has been working to ensure adequate compensation of workers and resolve the dispute.

“Our attention has been drawn to an issue on social media alleging staff protest at the refinery over salary increment dispute.

“The protesters are direct employees of Onshore, Offshore (Oil) and Chemie-Tech subcontractors, who are currently dealing with an industrial dispute with their employees.

“The situation is under control as we are mediating with the parties involved,” Tony Chiejina, a spokesperson for the company said in a statement reacting to the incident.

Families of policemen who were unlawfully killed will be compensated. – Governor Seyi Makinde.

Earlier today , the Oyo state governor, Engr Seyi Makinde visited the police command headquarter in the state. According to him, the state needs the police cooperation inorder to bring anarchists to book. He stated the following on all his social media platforms.

This afternoon, we visited the Eleyele Police Command Headquarters, Ibadan, to meet with members of the Oyo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force.

I stated that the police are a very important part of our community and acknowledged that not every member of the police force is bad. However, I said it is the professional conduct of the good ones that will win back the trust of the people.

I encouraged them to look beyond the actions of thugs and hoodlums who hijacked the legitimate protests and unleashed mayhem on some of their members. Bearing in mind that the protesters included them in their 5 for 5 requests by asking for better conditions of service for them.

I said we should all work together to build a better society. That I support the protests doesn’t mean I am against them. I am for the protection of everyone’s right, including theirs. And that we need their cooperation to ensure that arsonists and anarchists are brought to book.

Finally, I told them that the families of policemen in Oyo State who were unlawfully killed will be part of those compensated from the initial N500M Fund which we set up last week. May their souls rest in peace.
