Ebonyi PDP accuses Police, state govt of witch-hunting opposition

The Ebonyi State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has accused the state government of colluding with the Nigerian Police Force by witch-hunting and intimidating its party members and other opposition.

This was contained in a letter issued by the state’s PDP Chairman, Tochukwu Okorie, titled ‘Save Our Soul from Government Sponsored Terror’, dated January 12, addressed to the National Security Adviser (NSA), the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Director General, State Security Service (DSS)

According to the opposition party, the state government in cahoots with the Ebonyi State Police Command “appears to be working hand in gloves with a gang of vicious hoodlums on a reckless rampage” while noting that “well-meaning and law-abiding citizens of Ebonyi State are being pushed beyond tolerable limits by the mayhem, wanton destruction, naked molestation and dehumanising treatment these agents of evil and their pay masters are consistently unleashing on innocent citizens of the state.”

The PDP spokesman also detailed how the party’s Publicity Secretary in Ebony State, Nwoba Chika Nwoba was waylaid by a gang of hoodlums, allegedly with the support of the state government, during a trip along the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway.

He noted that Chika was molested before abduction by the hoodlums.

Consequently, the PDP itemized its grievances in the letter before the Inspector General of Police.

The rest of the statement reads, “From the foregoing, the IGP is invited to note as follows: That disappearance of people who refused to join the governor’s camp or have disagreement with him has become common place; That bad boys, cultists and hoodlums in Ebonyi State have now been organised into armed gangs to rain terror in the state; That the ‘gunmen’ operating in Ebonyi State, unlike in other states, are known. They operate under the name ‘Ebubeagu’ the state-owned militia; That the quantity of arms in the possession of Ebonyi State gangs is frightening and their seeming collaboration with the police is a cause for concern; That those who survive the organised attack are sure to be detained by the police and arraigned at a ready Magistrate Court on trumped up and frivolous charges.

The IGP may further note that the Ebonyi State Police Command refused PDP access to their secretariat since November 2020 when Governor David Umahi left the party on the very curious and flimsy excuse that he has a Magistrate Court order that says if PDP is allowed into the premises that they will be infected with COVID-19. The IGP may wish to note that, it is unacceptable for Ebonyi State Police Command to promote, protect and support criminal gangs even when their activities have become a disgrace to the name and integrity of the Nigerian Police.

In view of the above, I pray on behalf of Ebonyi State people as follows: That the IGP should as a demonstration of professionalism and respect for the rule of law, intervene to save Ebonyi citizens from state sponsored terror, That the IGP should investigate cases of professional misconduct by the Ebonyi State Police Command in the interest of the image of the Nigerian Police Force, and the personal integrity of the IGP as a fine officer and gentleman; That the IGP should intervene to release Nwoba, who is still in the custody of the police more than 48 hours of his abduction by an armed gang and detention by the police.”

Police making a mockery of death of Dowen College student, Sylvester —Falana

A human rights activist, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana has lambasted the Lagos State Police Command of making a mockery of the death of Sylvester Oromoni, a student of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos.

He said it was inhumane and a mockery of the death of Master Oromoni for the Lagos State commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu to speak on the report on the cause of death of the late student.

Sylvester had reportedly told his parents before he died that he was beaten by some senior students of the school, and dived to drink a concoction, because he refused their cult group.

Odumosu had addressed a press conference in the state where he had told members of the public that the report on the inquest from Lagos on the cause of death of Sylvester showed that he died of “natural causes”.

But Falana who spoke on Channels TV Sunrise Daily on Monday, lamented that Odumosu had no right to read out such a report, adding that the only person permitted by law to read the report was the coroner.

According to him, stating that Sylvester died of ‘natural causes’ was vague, and it was not specific on the actual cause of death, as an inquest report from Delta State had previously stated the exact cause of Sylvester’s death to include a collapsed lung due to chemical poisoning.

He accused the Lagos Police command of a cover up in the death of Sylvester, adding that as the lawyer to Sylvester’s family, he had applied for a copy of the report, but had not been given.

Dowen College student, Sylvester Oromoni’s death natural – Police

The Lagos State police command said on Friday the 12-year-old student of Dowen College in Lekki, Sylvester Oromoni, died a natural death.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, who disclosed this at a press briefing at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja, said the final results of the post-mortem and toxicology examination conducted on the deceased in Lagos and Delta confirmed that the cause of the death was natural.

The state government had on Wednesday cleared the students and staff of the school arrested by the police in connection with the boy’s death.

Sylvester’s family had claimed late last year that their son died after he was tortured by his mates for refusing to join a cult group in the college.

The school management later dismissed the claim, saying the boy was injured while playing football with his mates.

To pave way for a thorough investigation of the incident, the state government ordered the indefinite closure of the college late November.

At the briefing, the police commissioner said there was no evidence to establish a case of torture, bullying and forceful application of poisonous substances against the suspects.

He said: “ I am compelled by necessity of duty and in the interest of justice, transparency and openness, to invite the press here this afternoon to give an update on investigation carried out into the circumstances surrounding the death of Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, the 12- year-old student of Dowen College, Lekki.

The case has attracted comments and reactions from different quarters, individuals and parents insinuating a cover-up. The comments, reactions and insinuations have necessitated the need to do this press conference.

“Following a formal complaint received on 2nd December 2021 via a petition dated 1/12/2021 written by V.O. Grant & Co, and signed by A.E. Efole et al, the DPO Maroko was immediately directed to carry out preliminary investigation into the incident notwithstanding that the incident was not reported at any police station.

“Same day the petition was received, the DPO Maroko commenced preliminary investigation by visiting the Dowen College, Maroko on a fact-finding mission. However, due to the seriousness of the incident and the dare need to carry out a diligent investigation, the State CID was directed by me to take over the investigation of the case with immediate effect.

In compliance with this directive, the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, took over the case on 3rd December 2021 and continued investigation in earnest. In the course of investigation, eight suspects were arrested. The suspects included three House Masters of the College and five students who were said to have been mentioned by the deceased before his death.

The suspects were; Students i. Ansel Temile ‘m’ aged 14 ii. Michael Kashamu ‘m’ aged 15 iii. Kenneth Inyang ‘m’ aged 15 iv. Favour Benjamin ‘m’ aged 16 v. Edward Begue ‘m’ aged 16 House masters vi. Valentine Igbokwe ‘m aged 45 vii. Ahmed Bariyu ‘m’ aged 52 viii. Adesanya Olusegun ‘m aged 42,

A remand warrant dated 7th December 2021 was obtained at the Yaba Magistrate Court to enable the police detain the suspects for 21 days in the first instance while investigation continued. On 9th December 2021, all the parties including the deceased’s family, the school management, and witnesses were interviewed by me at the Command Headquarters, Ikeja.

“During the open interview, it was unanimously agreed that another autopsy should be carried out where pathologists from all parties would be present. The investigation was extended to Delta State and Abuja.

“ I will like to state here that investigation revealed that same case was reported at the Area Command, Warri, Delta State on 1st December 2021. It has also been established that a post-mortem examination was initially carried out on 2nd December 2021 by a Consultant Pathologist, Dr. Clement Vhriterhire of the Central Hospital, Warri, Delta State.

“The result of the first autopsy dated 10th December 2021 attributed cause of death to ‘acute lung injury due to chemical intoxication in a background of blunt force trauma’. However, toxicology screening was recommended and carried out. While waiting for the result of the toxicology, another autopsy was ordered by the Coroner Magistrate in Lagos because of the status of jurisdiction.”
