738 Peruvian children named after football legend Pele

738 Peruvian children have reportedly been named after Brazilian football legend, Pele following his death.

According to the list published by the Peruvian National Civil Registry at the end of 2022, a total of 738 babies were registered as Pelé, Rey Pelé, Edson Arantes or Edson Arantes do Nascimento, the real name of the triple world cup champion.

On Monday January 2, thousands of football fans and dignitaries gathered at the stadium of Brazilian club Santos, where he played from 1956 to 1974, to bid a final farewell to the Brazilian player who died on December 29 at the age of 82.

Among Peruvian girls, 551 were baptized as either Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth the Second or Elizabeth II, after the British monarch who died in September after 70 years on the throne.

Despite Pele’s passing, the most popular famous name used by Peruvian parents was that of Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, with Ronaldo or his full name chosen 31,583 times.

Peru’s President Impeached, Arrested For Dissolving Parliament

Peru’s leftist president Pedro Castillo was ousted by lawmakers and arrested Wednesday in a dizzying series of events in a country long prone to political upheaval.

Dina Boluarte, a 60-year-old lawyer, was sworn in as Peru’s first female president just hours after Castillo tried to dissolve Congress in a move criticised as an attempted coup.

Castillo, a former rural school teacher unexpectedly won power from Peru’s traditional political elite in an election 18 months ago.

In a televised address to the nation, the 53-year-old announced that he was dissolving the opposition-dominated Congress, installing a curfew, and would rule by decree.

Merino took power on Tuesday after legislators shocked the nation by voting to remove the popular former President, Vizcarra and then swore in Merino, who was the head of congress.

On Sunday, in a video message to the country, Merino said, “I present my irrevocable resignation. I call for peace and unity of all Peruvians.”

He added that he would now focus on ensuring a smooth transition to a new leader to avoid a power vacuum. A new interim President is expected to be announced later today.

Argentina Covid cases approaching 800,000

Against a drop in the number of Covid-related deaths and daily cases in Peru one Latin American country where infections continue to rise is Argentina.

Though sad but true, Health Authorities registered their highest number of daily cases so far on Friday with 14,687 confirmed infections. While the figures were lower on Saturday and Sunday, Argentina looks set to pass the 800,000 cases mark later on Monday.

The worst affected area is the capital, Buenos Aires, and its surroundings.

Argentina was one of the countries which imposed a strict lockdown early on but, as it has loosened restrictions, the number of infections has jumped up.

Experts warn that because the number of coronavirus tests being carried out in Argentina is very low, the real figure could be much higher.
