NDLEA grills socialite Obi Cubana

Nigerian socialite and chairman of the Cubana group of companies, Obinna Iyiegbu better known as Obi Cubana was drilled on Thursday, January 13 by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for alleged involvement in narcotics business.

According to Punch Newspaper, the Anambra State-born socialite was quizzed for five hours at the Abuja headquarters of NDLEA before he was granted bail and ordered to return at a future date.

It was further gathered that operatives of the NDLEA and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have now widened the probe into Cubana and his business network, based on the premise that he may be involved in the drug business.

The source informed the publication;

“Obi Cubana arrived at the NDLEA office around 9am and responded to questions for some hours before he was granted bail at 2pm. There are suspicions that he may be a drug kingpin. Some convicted drug dealers paid funds into his account.

“We have been able to establish three of such payments. One of the persons that paid money into his account was convicted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; another one that was convicted in New Delhi, India; also paid money into his account while a third person that was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and convicted in 2017, also paid money into Cubana’s account.”

Cubana is reportedly expected to present some documents to NDLEA at their next meeting. When Obi Cubana’s aide, Chioma Nwachukwu was contacted by the newspaper, she said;

“There is no comment on the matter now.”

It would be recalled that the nightlife aficionado was invited for questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged money laundering and tax evasion in the latter part of 2021. Cubana was released from EFCC custody several days after he was arrested.

The nightclub owner made headlines in July 2021 when he organized a lavish funeral for his mother, Ezinne Iyiegbu, in Oba, Idemili South local government area of Anambra State.

CBN explains why it can’t prosecute Obi Cubana, others for abuse of Naira

Following reports of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) failing to sanction violators of the country’s currency, the apex bank has disclosed that it has no power to take such action.

Conversation about the abuse of naira grabbed headlines in July after Nightclub businessman, Obi Iyiegbu popularly known as Obi Cubana, and his friends were captured violating the currency during his mother’s burial in Oba, Anambra State.

Ripples Nigeria had reported that Section 21 of CBN Act of 2007 frowns against the spraying of naira and stomping on it. The law states that any person caught violating the currency will be imprisoned for six months, with an option of fine – or both penalties will be meted on such individual.

However, the Acting Director of CBN’s Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisobi, contradicted the CBN rule, stating that the financial regulator is not a law enforcement agency.

Nwanisobi, who spoke at an interactive session with the organised labour in Calabar, Cross River state over the weekend, where he represented CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, said, “CBN is not a law enforcement agency. But we completely frown at such an attitude where the national currency is not accorded its due respect as other nationals do their currencies.”

He said so much capital goes into the production of the naira, and this cost is passed on to Nigeria eventually.

This statement contradicts the CBN Act of 2007, which empowers the CBN to take action against abusers of naira. According to the act:

(1) A person who tampers with a coin or note issued by the Bank is guilty of an offence and shall face imprisonment for a term not less than six months or to a fine not less than N50,000 or to both such fine and imprisonment.”

Actress Regina Askia questions govt’s role, after Obi Cubana reportedly empowered several billionaires

US-based Nollywood actress-cum-medical practitioner, Regina Askia has taken to the social media platform, Facebook to question the Nigerian government for failing to empower youths as socialite Obi Cubana.

Obi Cubana, real name Obinna Iyiegbu has gained intense popularity since the much talked about funeral service of his mother in Oba, Anambra State, a couple of weeks ago.

Notable individuals in the country have shared diverse opinions pertaining to the ostentatious funeral service; US-based actress-cum-nurse, Regina Askia has joined the bandwagon of people talking about Cubana’s business acumen and influence in the community.

She said: “If ONE young man who started his business selling food, can invest in and raise over 30 young billionaires who showed up and showed out in his support, why can’t a whole government of a whole country do better?”

Speaking further, Regina Askia stated that if one man in the person of Obi Cubana could singlehandedly empower several people thereby making them billionaires, she expects the Nigerian government to take a cue from him and financially empower Nigerians.

Sharing her thoughts on her Facebook page, the mother of two wrote:

“Everyone has had something to say on Obi Cubana and the “Burial of the Century”. I have no comments because people have a right to roll, how they choose, BUT, I have one question.

“For now my question remains if Cubana could raise so many billionaires why can’t a government?

Let’s adopt that apprenticeship system, provide funds and raise as many financially empowered Nigerians as Cubana has done with his brothers. Thank you.”
