Nigerians should emulate politicians, we are united – Yahaya Bello

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has urged Nigerians to eschew violence and promote peace, saying political elites are united and do not exchange blows.

Bello made the call on Wednesday in Abuja when he received members of the Ex-Agitators Forum from the Niger Delta on a solidarity visit to him for his achievements in security and unity in Kogi.

“I do not think you have ever seen our leaders exchanging blows during our meetings. We, as elites, are united, some only create the fights for you, and you fight yourselves. God forbid, I will not belong to that,” he said.

He noted Nigeria could only be fixed if everybody, irrespective of ethnic origin, religious and political views, came together

Bello also urged youths to resist being used in perpetrating criminal activities, especially by those who do not have the interest of Nigeria but to stand up to become part of the leadership process at all levels.

He said; “Let us come together as Nigerians, whether you are from Niger-Delta, whether you are from East, North, West, South, or not, let us come together.

“Enough of this divide and rule, enough of this ethnic sentiment, enough of these religious sentiments.

“The time has come to produce the next leaders across the board; leadership at top levels comprising of all these ethnic groups and religions.”

He urged the Nigerian youths to be wary of selfish politicians, “who do not have the interest of Nigeria at heart to use these sentiments to divide us and take our resources away, and crumbs are thrown at us.

“Nigeria is blessed; all it takes is good leadership to harness these blessings”.

The governor added that the Kogi strategy would bring the desired change and solution to the country’s challenges if copied across the board.

Nigerians just sit and complain but do nothing – Cardinal Onaiyekan

Cardinal John Onaiyekan says Nigerians are used to “just sitting and complaining about everything” but do nothing to challenge bad leaders.

The former Archbishop of Abuja Catholic Archdiocese stated this on Tuesday in Abuja during the North Central Zonal Dialogue Conference, organised by Lux Terra Leadership Foundation, in partnership with Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy, and Development.

Onaiyekan urged Nigerians to put elected leaders on their toes and hold them accountable.

He said; “Nigerians have gotten used to just sitting and complaining about everything. They complain about government and politicians, but they do not take their role of citizen participation seriously.

The leaders are happy about this and take full advantage of the docile nature of most Nigerians.”

According to the cleric, only when Nigerians actively use their right of “citizen participation” in governance will the leaders be on their toes and live up to their responsibilities.

The religious leader reminded leaders that once they took their oath of office with either Bible or Quran, they had put themselves under the judgment of God.

Another panellist, Bola Abimbola, Executive Director of Savannah Centre, noted that some of the problems in the country stemmed from a trust deficit between the government and citizens.

Abimbola, represented by Felix Pwol, a director at the centre, said the government needed to focus on national unity, national security, and development.

Nigerians should rise against herdsmen savagery – Governor Akeredolu

Ondo state Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu has called on peace-loving Nigerians to rise against herdsmen savagery after the latest attack in Ibarapa.

The South-West Governors’ Forum chairman also directed all commanders of the South-West Security Network (Amotekun) to immediately begin joint operations to stem the spate of insecurity in the region.

Akeredolu, disclosed this in Akure on Sunday, while describing the attack on Igangan as “a cowardly onslaught,” urged security agencies “to get to the root of this latest act of provocation.”

Suspected herdsmen had on Saturday attacked Igangan in Ibarapa North local government area of Oyo, leaving no fewer than 10 people dead.

Akeredolu also called on all well-meaning Nigerians to condemn the attack in the strongest possible terms, saying, “this latest assault is on decency and communal harmony.”

He added, “We must reiterate the fact that certain elements are bent on causing friction among the people of this country with the sole aim of achieving a pernicious end.

“We have just received, with rude shock, premeditated attacks on our people at Igangan in Ibarapa area of Oyo state, in the early hours of today (Sunday).

“This cowardly onslaught on a peaceful community has occasioned loss of lives and property on a large scale. It is horrendous, callous, and highly provocative. They will stop at nothing until their set goal is realised.”

Speaking further, the governor stated, “It is, therefore, incumbent on all lovers of peace and freedom to rise against this current regression into savagery.

“We, on our parts, are resolved to defend our people, their property, and all legitimate means of livelihood against both internal and external aggression.

“On this, there will be no compromise. We cannot afford to fail.”

Akeredolu called on people in the South-West to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement in their communities.

He also urged them to be united in the task of defending their lives and property.

Nigerians still using Twitter will know the law they’re violating when charged to court – AGF Malami

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has said that violators of the Twitter ban will become aware of the law they are breaking when charged to court.

Recall that Malami, on Saturday, ordered the prosecution of Nigerians defying the government’s ban on Twitter, but did not state the specify law that is being violated.

When asked which law he intends to invoke to prosecute alleged offenders, the AGF, who spoke through his media aide, Umar Gwandu, told Premium Times that “the alleged violators would get to know in court”.

He added; “We will invite journalists at the time of prosecution, and they will know which laws are used to prosecute. The point is Twitter has been banned. Anybody should not try to use Twitter.

At the time we are gathering them and assembling them in court, they will get to know which law they are violating. The government has banned Twitter and anybody who uses it will be penalised. The point is they violated the ban. They are violating the federal government laws”.

”No retreat No surrender” – Nigerians continue tweeting despite government’s prosecution order

Nigerians have continued to tweet in defiance to the Muhammadu Buhari-led government’s order to arrest and prosecute anyone who still uses Twitter in Nigeria.

The Federal Government on Friday banned Twitter, blocking citizen’s access to the micro-blogging platform, after Twitter deleted a controversial tweet of President Buhari referencing the civil war.

On Saturday, Attorney General and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami, ordered the arrest and prosecution of any Nigerian seen using Twitter. But the threat has not deterred Nigerians from tweeting and engaging on the micro-blogging site.

General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, took to Twitter shortly after Malami ordered the arrest and prosecution of whoever uses Twitter in Nigeria.

No retreat. No Surrender”, Adeboye tweeted, sharing a video of his message.

No Retreat No Surrender #WeMove #ForJesus — Pastor Adeboye (@PastorEAAdeboye) June 5, 2021

Like Mr Adeboye, the senior pastor of Omega Fire Ministry, Apostle Johnson Suleman, took to his Twitter page to question how it is possible to arrest people for using Twitter without monitoring them on the same platform.

“You want to arrest anyone still using Twitter?.

How did you access them if you are not secretly doing same? A deaf and dumb puts on ear-piece.!!” — Apst Johnson Suleman (@APOSTLESULEMAN) June 5, 2021.

Demola Olarenwaju said the order would only give security agencies to harrass and extort young Nigerians.

”Malami’s order of prosecution for tweeting is a declaration of war on young people by pushing them into the trap of security agencies of state who now have one more illegal reason to extort, detain, harass or even kill anyone for the alleged ‘crime’ of using Twitter.” — Demola Olarewaju (@DemolaRewaju) June 5, 2021.

Deji Adeyanju, an activist, questioned the legality of Mr Malami’s order.

”Dear Nigerians,

Don’t allow them to bully you. The goal is to bully you with their illiteracy. Nobody can arrest you for using Twitter. I hereby, volunteer myself for Malami’s experiment. Which police station should I report to for using Twitter?’‘ — Comrade Deji Adeyanju (@adeyanjudeji) June 5, 2021.

Segun Awosanya, another activist said;

”Malami and his fellow travelers are arrogating powers that they don’t have unto themselves because of the dearth of leadership and gap in responsibility of the state. As far as they are concerned they wield the powers of all arms of Govt combined at the expense of us all.” — SEGA L’éveilleu (@segalink) June 5, 2021.

Twitter ban: The right of Nigerians to freely express themselves must be respected – Sweden warns FG

The Swedish Government have reacted to the suspension slammed on microblogging platform, Twitter by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

In a tweet on its official handle, Sweden called on President Muhammadu Buhari to respect ‘freedom of expression.’

It noted that Nigerians have a constitutional right to exercise their freedom of expression and a right to access of information.

The tweet reads, ”Nigerians have a constitutional right to exercise their freedom of expression and a right to access of information.

This must be respected. Safeguarding free, independent media and civic spaces for democratic voices is an important part of Sweden’s #DriveForDemocracy #TwitterBan”

Just a few days after Twitter deleted Buhari’s controversial ‘civil war’ tweet, the federal government suspended Twitter’s operations in a statement on Friday.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said the government was forced to act because of “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

Nigerians resort to using VPN as service providers block Twitter

Nigerians on social media have embraced the use of a Virtual Private Network (VPN) following the suspension of the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, by the Nigerian Government.

VPN, according to kapersky.com, is a connection that allows users to establish a protected network connection when using public networks. It encrypts internet traffic and disguises the user’s online identity. This makes it more difficult for third parties to track users’ activities online and steal data.

On Friday, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement citing the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

Shortly after the federal government announced that Twitter has been suspended, virtual private network (VPN) started to dominate discussions on social media platforms.

Nigerians will praise Buhari after his tenure in 2023 – Femi Adesina

Presidential aide, Femi Adesina, says that President Muhammadu Buhari has recorded achievements that will make Nigerians proud of him after leaving office in 2023.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, said this in a statement titled; ‘The Buhari Administration at 6: Counting the Blessings One by One’, on Friday, May 28.

Adesina’s statement outlined the achievements of Buhari’s regime in the last six years.

It read; “The Muhammadu Buhari administration clocks six years May 29, 2021.

This milestone affords the opportunity to reflect, and recount the impact that has been made (and is being made) on different sectors of national life.

“From infrastructure, to finance, education, healthcare, sports, anti-corruption, human development, housing, oil and gas, foreign relations, and many others, the administration is recording giant strides, enough to make Nigerians proud.

“That is, those who are dispassionate and fair-minded, not beclouded by political partisanship and undue cynicism.

“Some people claim: ‘We don’t see what they are doing. We don’t hear about it.’

When the Administration breasts the tape in another two years, by the grace of God, the applause will be resounding, even from the worst of sceptics.

“Facts are undeniable, and always remain so. They are stubborn things.”

Nigerians don’t need bank accounts – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC says it is not compulsory for Nigerians to have bank accounts amid the rising spate of bank frauds and insider crimes in the banking sector.

The EFCC also kicked against the idea of opening bank accounts with only phone numbers, arguing that nearly 40 percent of Americans do not have accounts.

Bawa Usman, zonal head of the EFCC in Sokoto made the statement on Tuesday at a roundtable with compliance officers of commercial banks.

He said; “Nearly 40 per cent of Americans do not have accounts. So, it is not very compulsory for everybody in Nigeria to have a bank accounts

According to Usman, whose zone covers Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara, insiders facilitate most financial frauds in the banking industry.

The commission convened the meeting to strengthen the relationship and collaborations between the EFCC and the banks in tackling frauds.

The EFCC boss further said the banks often frustrated the EFCC’s investigations as they delayed replying to its letters.

Such delays jeopardise our investigation. Financial institutions must collaborate with us toward curtailing money laundering, illegal financing, and other illicit flows of money.

The meeting is a response to the directive of the EFCC leadership. It is one of numerous strategies toward fighting all manners of corruption.

“The commission strives to ensure that fraudsters do not get away with proceeds of crimes undetected. To achieve this, we are appealing to all banks to facilitate a better working relationship with the anti-graft agency,” he explained.

He urged bankers to improve ways of tracking illicit finances and transactions, stressing that point of service operators or money agents needed to be well-informed on financial regulations.

Usman told the banks to ensure that eligible customers obtain Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering (SCUML) numbers, stressing the need to review their data registers to ensure compliance.

Nigerians in diaspora with expired passports can come back home for renewal – FG

Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, says Nigerians in diaspora with expired passports can return home for the renewal “without fear of harassment”.

He gave the assurance at a webinar organised by Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) on Saturday.

The minister said the establishment of front offices have been approved at Lagos, Kano, Abuja and Port Harcourt airports to help Nigerians “who arrive the country on expired passports to have their passports renewed immediately”.

It is in this regard that the NIS recently granted a waiver for Nigerians with expired passports desirous of coming to Nigeria to do so without fear of harassment by airlines,” he said.

Aregbesola also said he has given a May 31 deadline to clear all backlogs of passport applications.

He further explained that the delay in passport issuance experienced by Nigerians is one of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said: “The Nigerian Immigration Service in recent time has been facing challenges in passport issuing, particularly because of a shortage of booklet, both locally and abroad. The ministry and NIS have been frantically working to resolve this.

I gave a May 31st deadline to clear all backlogs of passport application. To ensure a permanent solution to the recurrent scarcity of booklet, the federal government is at an advanced stage of domesticating the production of passport booklets here in Nigeria.

So, with what we are commencing on June 1st, I am confident that we shall no longer experience any shortage of booklets and the issuance and renewal of passports will be seamless starting from the 1st of June.

“To ensure efficient and effective service delivery to Nigerians, we have recently reviewed the passport issuing process with a view to streamlining the process for better performance while also eliminating the activities of touts.

All passport applications and issuance are to be made online. Effective June 1, all passport application and issuance will take a period of six weeks to enable the NIS to carry out due diligence on all applicants.”

Tinubu ‘angered & troubled’ over insecurity, urges Nigerians to support security forces

The national leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his anger over the insecurity ravaging the Nigeria.

Tinubu, who had earlier this week opined that the ruling party has bright chances of ruling the country beyong 2023, said he was troubled by the acts of terror happening in many parts of the country.

In a series of tweet on Thursday, the former Senator and Lagos Governor also called on fellow citizens to stand with the military and other security agencies, who are doing their best to contain the situation.

“Like all decent Nigerians, I am angered and troubled by the terror and cruelty being visited upon the people of Borno, Yobe, Benue, Niger, Imo and other parts of the nation,” he tweeted.

These attacks have caused many to disparage our military and security forces. This we must not do. Valiant men and women serve in our security forces, risking their lives to protect us. We stand with them.

“Government also must continue to encourage the security forces to do their utmost to subdue this threat. The lives of innocent Nigerians and the future progress of the nation may lie in the balance.

“As a people, we must never surrender to the fearful temptation to blame one another. Regardless of region or religion, we must unite against a common foe. Discord will only invite defeat.

“The enemy’s attacks seem to focus on our schools, religious institutions and security forces. They seek to extinguish the light of knowledge and hope by shrouding us in the darkness of fear and brutal ordeal.

We must not tremble. They will be vanquished. In the end, tolerance, justice and compassion shall win the day.”

Nigerians love APC, can rule beyond 2023 – Tinubu

National leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, says the the party is loved by Nigerians and has bright chances of ruling the country beyond 2023.

Tinubu stated this when speaking with State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He also reassured Nigerians that President Buhari respects the Nigerian Constitution and would vacate office at the expiration of his tenure on May 29, 2023.

He said: “The chances are as bright as a midnight star and we will continue to work for a better Nigeria.

We cannot interject politics and assumption in everything, we have a nation to build.

“We have a baton to pass. You can depend on Buhari that he will not spend one hour beyond his tenure. He will comply with the constitution.”

The APC chieftain also charged all well-meaning citizens to remain united in the wake of current security challenges confronting some parts of the country.

Tinubu said all Nigerians must put aside their religious, political, or ethnic differences and cooperate with security agents to surmount the problem.

He said: “Yes, every nation will go through these curves and difficult times but how we communicate it to the people and what are the areas to make it easier for the people to bear, those are ideas we have to be able to exchange with the leadership of the country.

“It calls for coming together to reduce banditry, move for unity and be able to bring a better Nigeria to the people because the welfare of our people is extremely important.

“This also calls for cooperation and understanding, effective security and effective giving of information.

There is no president who will want to see his country in chaos nor is there anyone who will want to see his citizens exposed to banditry and danger.

No president or a leader that will want to see his nation fractured in tribalism or religious differences and others.

“The current challenges call for serious management, evaluation, and dialogue once in a while”.

Bandits terrorizing Nigerians have foreign sponsors – NSCDC

The Commandant General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSDC), Ahmed Audi, said on Wednesday the bandits terrorizing Nigerians are backed by foreign elements.

Audi disclosed this at a training workshop for state commandants of the NSCDC held in Abuja.

“We have had in the past had some semblance of this type of war but the proper manifestation of it is the one we are seeing now. Asymmetric war is a war that requires all hands to be on deck if we really want to deal with it and nip it in the bud.

“These guys are serious; these guys have international sponsors, so we need to come together.”

Audi implored security agencies to avoid rivalry and “service supremacy.”
