Presidency advices Nigerians to leave the country if migrating legally is good for them

The presidency has insisted that the recent increase in migration from Nigeria is not peculiar to the country alone or a new development.

Appearing on a Channels Television program on Sunday, November 27, presidential aide Femi Adesina stated that the average Nigerian have always wanted to leave and people should not equate it to something being wrong.

Adesina said;

“The average Nigerian had always wanted to leave. And it is not just in Nigeria. It is in most countries of the world, particularly in the third world.

“They always believe that it is greener on the other side.

“You see, the truth is that if you have an opportunity to better yourself in any part of the world, there is nothing wrong with it. If you think migrating legally is good for you, all well and good. By all means, go!

“But you cannot now say that because people are leaving, then it is a sign that something is fundamentally wrong.

“There are Nigerians who would never leave the country no matter how things are”.

Adesina also spoke about the country’s security, adding that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration would hand over a safer country.

He added;

“No doubt about it. He would leave a safer country. When he came in 2015, you could not be sure Nigeria would exist in the next one month. As of 2015, what was happening was that nobody could confidently say that Nigeria would be on the map in the following next week, month or year. But we saw that he came and took the battle to the insurgency.

“When he came, the insurgency was the main thing and he took the battle to them. Then, it became hydra-headed – banditry, kidnapping for ransom, cultism, and separatist agitations joined. How many challenges can one administration really confront? That’s the issue with the Buhari administration. From day one till now, it was from one challenge to the other.”

Nigerian lady celebrates as she becomes Branch Manager of Canada’s leading bank

A Nigerian woman, Patience Adesuwa Ajao is celebrating after she was promoted as the Branch Manager of a leading bank in Canada.

Taking to Facebook on Saturday, November 12, Mrs Ajao recalled how people said she would never be promoted when she was employed as a Customer Service Representative with the bank eight years ago.

“Upon relocating to Canada eight years ago, I was told to abandon all thoughts of building a career, and just, survive. A few months later, I accepted the Customer Service Representative role with one of Canada’s top five Banks,” she wrote.

Talks in my ears sounded like: you will not get promoted, you will be a teller for life, remember you are black, a woman and an immigrant from Nigeria, three strikes against you.

Forging on, I moved through four roles: Financial Services Representative, Financial Advisor, Manager of Customer Experience, and Assistant Branch Manager.

In addition to having my 3rd child, pregnancy and maternity did not prevent my climb up the ladder. Needless to say, I have since distanced myself from those that never believed in me.

I am blessed to be a part of an organization that has provided a level playing field for everyone. In this month of November 2022, I accepted the promotion to the role of Branch Manager, thank you TD!!

Finally, Dear Immigrants: seek an organization that will accept your potential and believe in yourself that you can attain whatever height you aim for.

Absence of interpreter stalls trial of Chinese man who allegedly killed Nigerian girlfriend in Kano

A Kano High Court number 17 sitting at Miller road has adjourned the hearing of Chinese national, Geng Quangrong, accused of killing his Nigerian lover, Ummukulsum Sani Buhari, over absence of interpreter.

Mr Quandong, 47, allegedly murdered Ummukulsum, 23, at Janbalu quarters for allegedly refusing his hand in marriage.

At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, Muhammad Dan’azumi, the defence counsel, notified the court that an interpreter had not been provided for the accused.

The case, which was originally slated to commence last week Monday, was adjourned to Tuesday due to a lack of legal representation for Mr Quandong.

Initially, the police in Kano, North-west Nigeria, on 21 September, arraigned Mr Quandong before a magistrates court at Zangeru road in Kano.

At the hearing, Mr Quandong addressed the court in Chinese, which made it difficult for the parties involved including the magistrate to comprehend the message.

The Magistrate, Justice Sunusi Ado Ma’aji adjourned the case to 27 October, with the hope that an interpreter would have been found to explain the charges to Mr Quandong in Chinese.

Speaking shortly, Kano state Attorney General and commissioner of justice, M, A Lawan said, the case could not be heard as the accused person has the constitutional right to be communicated to in the language he understands.

“The issue of interpreter was raised which is a constitutional issue and after the last adjournment, we wrote a letter to the Chinese embassy requesting for interpreter because we expected this to happen and I am sure they will do that.

That is why we adjourned the matter to at least three weeks. Ordinarily, it’s supposed to be a week.” he said.

US court jails suspended aide of Governor Dapo Abiodun for five years for fraud

Abidemi Rufai, the suspended aide of Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for fraud by a US court.

Rufai had attempted to use stolen identities to steal nearly $2.4 million from the United States government, including approximately $500,000 in pandemic-related unemployment benefits.

According to the statement, Rufai admitted a long history of using stolen identities to defraud U.S. disaster programs, including aid for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and file fraudulent U.S. tax returns.

The 45-year-old convict who pleaded guilty to the charges in May, was said to have succeeded in defrauding 12 US agencies of $600,000 paid out into bank accounts controlled by him.

Rufai also defrauded the Small Business Administration (SBA) by attempting to obtain Economic Injury Disaster loans (EIDL) tied to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Between April 8, 2020, and June 26, 2020, he submitted 19 fraudulent EIDL applications.

SBA paid out $10,000 based on the applications. Between 2017 and 2020, Rufai attempted to obtain more than $1.7 million in IRS tax refunds by submitting 675 false claims. The IRS paid out $90,877 on these claims.

The largest amount of fraud was committed against the Washington State Employment Security Department, which paid out $350,763 in fraudulent pandemic unemployment claims to accounts controlled by Rufai.

Rufai also submitted fraudulent pandemic unemployment claims in at least 17 other states.

From the plea agreement with the prosecution, Mr Rufai agreed to pay full restitution of $604,260 to the defrauded agencies.

The trial judge, Benjamin H. Settle reportedly said;

“The motivation was greed, unrestrained greed, and a callousness towards those who have suffered.”

Though Mr Rufai agreed to pay full restitution of $604,260 to the defrauded agencies as revealed in a plea agreement with the prosecution, the US Department of Justice said he “has not fully cooperated with efforts to identify and forfeit assets that could be used for restitution.”

245 killed in Kaduna community attacks

The paramount ruler of the Atyap Chiefdom, Agwatyap, Dominic Yahaya, has raised the alarm that 245 locals have been killed while 623 houses were burnt in attacks within his domain in Zango-Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The monarch stated this on Wednesday at the Kaduna Catholic Social Centre during the commemoration of the International 2022 Peace Day organised by the Liturgy and Social Justice in Kaduna.

The ruler said, “The recurring attacks, which have become most distressful and disturbing as the alleged killers who are known to have lived among the communities, will often call names of their victims to notify them of their mission to kill before committing dastardly acts on the innocent and harmless farmers.

“The genesis, which many considered premeditated, started in early 2019 when isolated individual killings of farmers became rampant, and before we knew what was happening, about 14 of such incidents had occurred.

“This snowballed into a major crisis on June 16, 2020. Thereafter, massive attacks occurred in villages whereby people were killed and houses and property were burnt by herdsmen, which some uninformed people termed as farmer/herders clashes, whereas this narrative has been most painful as the attacks which occurred in the dead of the night left many communities desolate.”

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Kaduna State Peace Commission, Dr Saleh Mamale, while commenting on the International Peace Day, maintained that the socio-economic pursuit of individuals, communities and nations significantly varies over time and space, and the ability and/or inability to manage these diversities is the major driver of peace or violence.

Nigerian man poses as German woman on social media, allegedly dupes retired Indian engineer of N131m

The Special Task Force in Uttar Pradesh, India has arrested a Nigerian man who allegedly duped a 64-year-old retired Aeronautics engineer of Rs 9 lakh (N131m) by posing as a German woman on social media.

The accused identified as Jerome Balla aka Sunday Dumka, 34, was arrested from Delhi on Thursday, September 15, 2022. Police recovered six mobile phones, three SIM cards, one Nigerian voter ID card, Mastercard and photocopy of a passport from his possession.

STF said that the accused is the member of the gang involved in online fraud, particularly duping older men by luring them into friendship impersonating as women.

The accused posed as a woman on his social media profile and took the money from the victim, a resident of Alambagh, Lucknow, in the name of sending him gifts on her birthday. The man lodged a case with the Cyber police.

ASP, STF, Vishal Vikram Singh, said that the suspect created a fake profile identifying him as Analisa Thompson of Berlin and befriended the victim through Facebook.

Last year, the suspect sent a message stating that ‘she’ wanted to send some gift on her birthday and asked the victim to send his address.

“A few days later, I got a call from a man regarding a parcel and was asked to deposit Rs 20,000 as income tax. I did the payment.

A few days later I got another call, this time from a woman, and was asked to deposit Rs 52,000 as charges/tax for the gift which was 60,000 in Great Britain currency. Since the money was huge, I did not doubt and deposited this amount also,” he said.

Later, he was told to deposit Rs 3.98 lakh as the final sum which was assessed as charges for getting the gift and foreign money.

“While I was eagerly waiting for the gift, another person sent me a letter asking me to deposit Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 8.28 lakh,” he said.

He said they took money in the name of RBI charges/fees. He said these e-mails made him cautious and he went to the RBI to inquire about the same and was told that he had been cheated. ASP Singh said the arrested man was named in several cases of cyber fraud in Lucknow.

During interrogation, the accused revealed that he visited India in 2017. He then married a girl from India in 2018 and has been living in Delhi since then.

The police added that the accused created several IDs on various social media platforms and used to display pictures of foreign people to trap the victims. The accused befriended the victims by impersonating as a man or woman from America, Germany or elsewhere.

He even talked to them on phone by using voice changer software. With a promise to marry the victims, the accused vowed to send them lavish gifts. Later, he would call them up as a Customs officer and pressure victims to pay ‘customs duty’ on the items received.

According to the police, the accused also duped people by threatening to trap them in money laundering case and asked them to send money to various bank accounts.

”Religion is the number one problem for Nigerians” – Wole Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka has said that religion is the number one problem hindering Nigerians from being liberated as “rational beings.”

The revered author and playwright made the comment during a recent chat with a professor of African Literature, Dr. Louisa Egbunike.

He said; “All over the place, I find that religion has been cosseted too much. And liberty has been taken by religionists, which would not be considered to other movements which are considered secularists.

If you put on a garb of a religious leader, you can close up the expressway between Lagos and the rest of the nation, simply because you are having a religious celebration. You are just a fraction of the rest of the nation. And you should be accorded no special privileges. So, until that is done, people will always find something extra by belonging and manifesting, even to an extreme extent, your religious adhesions.

“Religion has become the number one problem for Nigerians. Hope is all very well; but hope itself can become putrid. Especially if it is hope for unearned advantages in society. If religion becomes an excuse for flouting the law, then that religion has got to be tackled head-on.

“If for instance a legislator, later a Governor, can claim the right to be a pedophile and indulge in cross-border child trafficking, celebrating child marriage, consummating that event, which is against the law of a nation, and he says he has a right to do it because his religion permits it; then both he and that religion should just be shown the way to the law courts and treated like other phenomena of society.

If you can use religion to excuse building a church which collapses on the head of humanity, many of them not from Nigeria, several from South Africa. And then you say it was caused by supernatural forces when you know very well that you flouted the conditions for increasing the floors of your building.

“So this is what has become the daily reality of Nigerians. So religion has got to be put in its place in order for people to be liberated as rational beings, beings of volition, who can tackle the problems of existence in a rational, collective way, rather than by insisting that it is only along one route that society can be transformed.

“Take a religion, practice it at home, collect around you anybody you want for collective celebration or religious seasons, nobody quarrels with that. But when you use religion to subvert the rights of others, to the extent of primordial rights, to kill, not just singling, but collectively, to burn down the places of worship of others; then it is about time we treated religion as a crime against humanity; it’s reached that level in societies like Nigeria.”
