Restructuring: Nigeria should have six Vice Presidents – Umahi

Ebonyi state governor, Dave Umahi, has said that Nigeria needs to be restructured in a way that each geo-political zone will produce its own Vice President.

Umahi stated this when he appeared on Channels TV on Monday, adding that the adoption of six Vice Presidents will quell the rising “tension” in the country.

When asked about his opinion on the lingering debate on restructuring, the governor opined that more powers should go to the states.

Well, I have a different view about this restructuring thing. My position about restructuring — for example: there are certain valid suggestions that have been made, to have six vice-presidents in the country.

“Each one is kind of coming from each of the geo-political zones. Tension will go down. This is very important.

“Now, I will recommend administrative restructuring, which is making sub-national governments to be strengthened devolving power and responsibilities to sub-national governments; abolishing the local governments,” he said.

The call for restructuring of Nigeria has become very loud in different quarters as some sections of the country feel they are being marginalized.

The National Assembly is currently in the process of reviewing the 1999 constitution but some experts feel the move would not bring the needed solutions to Nigeria’s problems, calling for a totally new constitution.

Nigeria needs leaders that can unite the country – VP Osinbajo

Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, has said only proactive leaders can solve the challenges bedeviling the country.

A statement by the Vice President’s spokesman, Laolu Akande said Osinbajo made the comment on Monday, when he paid a courtesy visit to Abdulwasiu Lawal, Oniru of Iruland, in Lagos.

He said; “Our country needs all the leaders — the best leaders, the most proactive leaders, leaders prepared to bring the country together.

“Lagos is a microcosm of Nigeria. Everybody is here. If things work out well here, things will be okay in the country.

“I am sure your role here is that of someone who brings together communities — not just Yorubas, but everybody.

“And I can see that from your choice of chiefs, you have gone to other parts, and I think this is the attitude of great leaders.

“You should know that you are always in my prayers, because I believe that your role is crucial, not just for the development of this state, but for the whole country.

“Today, you cannot relegate traditional rulers because of the exposure and education of those who occupy that position.”

2023: No better youth to lead Nigeria than Yahaya Bello – Mikel Obi

Nigerian footballer and former Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi, has said that there is a need for youth leadership in Nigeria.

He stated this while on a courtesy visit to Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi on Sunday in Abuja.

Obi said that it was time for the Youths to come out and take leadership positions across all boards for the betterment of Nigeria.

He pledged support for Bello’s political aspirations, adding that youths should be given a chance to get the change Nigerians clamour for.

He also lauded Bello for his achievement in Kogi in the areas of security, healthcare, infrastructure, education and agriculture.

The soccer star noted that such efforts when impacted at a higher level would bring further development for Nigeria.

“It is an honour for me to finally meet his Excellency personally after all the good things I have heard and read about him from not just the people of Kogi State but from Nigerians.

“My main aim is to come here to show my appreciation and to thank him for all the things he has been doing for the people and also to support him in whatever future political positions he wants to go into.

“I will like to be there to support him, to be there by his side through this journey for him to achieve whatever he wants which is for the betterment of Nigeria.

“What better person to lead the youths than him, because he has been doing all these good works and that is why I am here to see whatever way I can come in.

“To get the youths together to know and see how we can make things better for our country and how we can align to achieve all that”, Obi said.

Responding, Bello thanked Obi for the visit and his pledge to support the course for youth leadership.

He reiterated that it was time for the youths to take the opportunity that had presented itself.

Nigeria cannot afford funds to revive education – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said the federal government cannot afford the amount of funding needed to revive the country’s educational system.

Buhari spoke on Saturday at the 49th convocation ceremony of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN.

He also said the competition for funds had become keener because of the recent increase in the number of tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

The President said the financial situation had been worsened by the global economic downturn, which also affected the national revenue.

Buhari, who was represented at the ceremony by the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, however, said his administration was committed to addressing the needs of tertiary institutions through budgetary allocations to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).

“I am optimistic that the on-going drive to diversify the national economy will provide the government with additional resources to improve funding for the education system,” he said.

The president said the universities should also leverage other funding sources, such as from alumni, friends, the private sector, institutional linkages, and research grants, to attract additional revenue for infrastructure, research, and development.

“We must also address the problems of poor work ethics and the albatross of prolonged and recurrent industrial actions by staff of universities,” the president stated.

Buhari advised academic institutions across the country to embark on the kind of innovative research that could help boost production and diversify the economy.

“Our universities must continue to emphasise training in entrepreneurship so school leavers and graduates are able to become job creators instead of perennial job seekers,” he said.

On his part, Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, said the government should make effort to address the perennial challenge of poverty and inequality in the country or risk losing the youth to crime.

Amaechi, who delivered the 49th convocation lecture of the university, stated that the series of protests held across the country of late, such as #ENDSARS, were as a result of increasing poverty and disaffection on the part of the citizens.

Although, the current administration has introduced a number of programmes to help eradicate poverty, such as Transport Track for individuals who were into the transportation business, several Nigerians are yet to be lifted out of poverty,” the minister said.

He stated that policies should be focused on the rural majority, and targeted at giving the citizens a good life and lifting them out of poverty.

Nigeria needs Twitter – Senate President breaks silence on Twitter ban

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan has broken his silence on the suspension of Twitter by the federal government.

According to Lawan, the country needs Twitter as much as the social networking service needs Nigeria.

Speaking with journalists at the national assembly in Abuja on Friday, he said the senate is optimistic that the federal government and Twitter will eventually resolve their differences.

The honorable minister of information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, informed Nigerians that they are talking with Twitter to resolve this matter. Our belief is that Nigeria needs Twitter just as much as Twitter needs Nigeria.

We believe that the matter between Twitter and the federal government of Nigeria will be resolved.

“But beyond that, I’m an optimist, I believe all of us will have learnt our lessons,” the Senate President said.

Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, announced the suspension of the social media platform a week ago.

But when the national assembly resumed sitting on Tuesday, the senate, unlike the house of representatives, kept mum over the ban.

Twitter must be registered in Nigeria before ban will be reversed – FG

The federal government on Wednesday, said the management of Twitter has reached out for a “high-level discussion” to resolve the issue that led to the suspension of its operations in Nigeria.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, made the disclosure to state house correspondents after the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday, June 9, 2021.

The meeting, which held at the presidential villa, Abuja, was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mohammed listed conditions that must be met before even considering a reversal of Twitter ban – which includes that it must now be registered in Nigeria as a business concern, The Cable reports.

He said other social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram must also be registered in the country.

The minister said freedom of speech was not stifled by the suspension of Twitter, adding that Nigerians can still use other platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.

He added that Twitter’s loss of money as a result of the suspension is an indication of its effectiveness.

Mohammed said the suspension was necessary because the micro-blogging site provided a platform for those that are threatening the existence of Nigeria.

The minister alleged that Twitter allowed Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to use its platform to call for the killing of security agents.

He revealed that the microblogging platform failed to take down Kanu’s tweets despite repeated requests to do so.

Twitter is Nnamdi Kanu’s platform to destabilise Nigeria, says Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said Twitter is the social media platform of choice for the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to “destabilise Nigeria”.

Mohammed made this known during an interview with BBC News Africa on Monday evening .

The minister, while defending the Federal Government’s Twitter ban, maintained that the administration won’t allow any separatist set the country on fire.

He said; “The government has suspended indefinitely the operations of Twitter in Nigeria because of the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

The government also directed the regulatory agency which is the National Broadcasting Commission to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.

“The main reason for this is because of the persistent use of Twitter in particular for activities that are inimical to the corporate existence of Nigeria.”

Mohammed added, “IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu in particular, his platform of choice to destabilise the country is Twitter.

“Twitter is actually the platform of choice for the separatist leader who resides outside Nigeria but issues directives for his members to attack the symbols of authority such as policemen, soldiers, correctional centres, electoral offices and this has been done willfully and consistently without consequences using always the Twitter platform.”

Twitter should have office in Nigeria to resolve issues – Governor Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu of Lagos State Governor, says if Twitter had an office in Nigeria, resolving the current ban would have been easier.

Sanwo-olu made the suggestion in an interview with Arise TV on Monday, June 7, 2021.

He noted that he cannot categorically say if the federal government’s action against Twitter is wrong or right because he does not have the same prognosis as the president and commander-in-chief.

The governor also said that the federal government had only suspended Twitter operations in Nigeria, rather than out rightly banning it.

He further suggested that Twitter and the government should come together to resolve the issues rather than allow it to continue to degenerate to the detriment of the economy.

“On both sides, there are issues that can be resolved between Twitter and the Government and I think what they’ve done is not a ban but a suspension like they said, so in the period of suspension let us sit down

“So in the period of suspension, let’s sit down, if we have 40 million users of micro-blogging user and they chose to take their investment to country with five million users, it speaks to the reason why we also need to have that conversation with them so that perhaps if they have an office here things would have been done along quicker and better,” he said.

On June 4, the Nigerian government issued a statement suspending operations of Twitter after the microblogging site deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s ‘civil war’ tweet.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described Nigeria as a land flowing with bitterness and sadness.

The two-time Nigerian leader who spoke on Thursday, said bad leadership has prevented the country from achieving its potential.

He made the statement while being presented with a book titled, ‘The Man, The General and The President,’ authored by Femmy Carrena, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, The Punch reports.

Right now, it is a land flowing with bitterness and sadness, that is not what God wants this country to be.

“We must change the narrative, we must talk to ourselves in the civilised language.

“There is nowhere you go in this country that you will not see geniuses in any section of the country. So, why should we look down on ourselves?”

Buhari’s tweet: Adamu Garba asks FG to block Twitter from Nigeria’s internet space

Former presidential aspirant of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Adamu Garba, has said the Federal Government should shut down Twitter from Nigeria’s internet space.

He spoke in reaction to the tech giant’s deletion of President Muhammadu Buhari’s controversial tweet on the civil war.

According to Garba, Twitter has no right to take down President Buhari’s tweet.

Taking to his Twitter account, the APC Chieftain said the microblogging platform should be expunged from Nigeria.

He wrote: “Twitter has no right to infuse into our local political affairs. It’s a company not a government.

“By removing our democratically elected President’s speech to the people of Nigeria, Twitter needs to be shut down from Nigerian internet space.

“Twitter needs to get out of Nigeria.”

He went further to urge Buhari and his cabinet to consider using his social media app as an alternative to Twitter.

Garba added; President @MBuhari and his entire cabinet, including all Govt related social handles should consider using my app.

We grow our local brand and perfect it by using and supporting it.

Since we have a local content rules, my app is there to protect our national integrity.

Agreed we have our constraints but it is ours and we are improving on it.

My app will do well to advance the interest of Nigerians and Africans than some foreign online colonization tool called Twitter.

Acknowledge Nigeria is a failed state – Ex-US Ambassador tells US government

A former United States Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell, and a former Director with Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, Prof. Robert Rotberg, have said it is time for the US to acknowledge that Nigeria is a failed state in the light of the many challenges plaguing the country.

Campbell and Rotberg said this in an article titled, ‘The Giant of Africa is Failing’ which was published in the May/June edition of ‘Foreign Affairs’ magazine.

They argued that every part of Nigeria now faces insecurity which threatens the nation’s corporate existence.

The article read in part, “Nigeria’s worldwide companions, particularly the USA, should acknowledge that Nigeria is now a failed state. In recognition of that truth, they need to deepen their engagement with the nation and search to carry the present administration accountable for its failures, while additionally working with it to supply safety and proper financial system.”

They said even the police have found it difficult to curb crime due to the sophisticated weapons that criminals wield.

“Underneath the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, a number of overlapping safety crises has remodelled Nigeria from a weak state right into a failed one. Buhari’s authorities has struggled to quell numerous Jihadi insurgencies, together with the one waged by the militant group Boko Haram,” the article read.

Campbell and Rotberg said the Federal Government seemed to have given up in some areas because non-state actors had taken over while quasi-police organisations and militias controlled by state governments had become more common.

The authors stated that due to kidnappings and other crimes, several schools had been forced to shut down.

Regional quasi-police forces and militias—generally related to state governments however not often formally sanctioned—train de facto authority in some areas. However in lots of others, the federal authorities have successfully ceded management to militants and criminals,” a section of the article read.

The authors of the article maintained that most failed states in Africa such the Central African Republic, Somalia, and South Sudan are small or marginal but Nigeria, in contrast, boasts a rising inhabitants of over 200 million people and could be the third-largest country on earth by 2050.

Campbell and Rotberg said happenings in Nigeria also affect other areas of Africa which shows Nigeria’s importance.
They said even though Nigeria still has some signs of being viable, its structure which relies largely on oil receipts, undermines growth as well as deep-rooted corruption.

However the Nigerian state has long failed to supply its residents with social companies and Nigerian politics is basically an elite sport disassociated from governance.

The Federal Government doesn’t or cannot tax the true wealth of the nation, stays too depending on income from oil and gasoline, and lurches from one fiscal disaster to a different. Corruption is structural, too, casting almost everybody as each perpetrator and sufferer”.

They argued that the US ought to assist the push for a formidable Nigerian-led state reconstruction effort.

The authors recommended that through conferences, technical recommendations, and different instruments of “comfortable diplomacy,” the US ought to help civil society and Nigerian non-governmental organisations in their efforts to strengthen the nation’s democracy.

Twitter’s mission in Nigeria is suspicious – Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has taken a swipe at tech giant, Twitter, saying its mission in Nigeria is suspicious.

Mohammed’s comments came after Twitter deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet where he issued a threat to deal with “misbehaving” elements in “the language they understand”, while making reference to Nigeria’s civil war.

While defending its action, the tech company said the President’s tweet violated its rules.

But briefing State House reporters at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday in Abuja, the Minister accused Twitter of ignoring inciting tweets by the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, and others, adding that Nigeria would not be fooled.

He said; “We have a country to rule and we will do so to the best of our ability. Twitter’s mission in Nigeria is very suspect, they have an agenda.

“The mission of Twitter in Nigeria is very suspicious. Has Twitter deleted the violent tweets that Nnamdi Kanu has been sending? Has it? The same Twitter during the ENDSARS protests that were funding ENDSARS protesters, it was the first to close the account of the former president of the US, Trump.

“And you see when people were burning police stations and killing policemen in Nigeria during ENDSARS, for Twitter, it was about the right to protest. But when a similar thing happened on the Capitol, it became insurrection.”

The minister also asked what rule of Twitter President Buhari violated to warrant his tweet to be deleted, wondering why previous tweets on #EndSARS protests were taken out.

Mohammed added; “Twitter may have its own rules, it’s not the universal rule. If Mr. President, anywhere in the world feels very bad and concern about a situation, he is free to express such views. Now, we should stop comparing apples with oranges.

“If an organisation is proscribed, it is different from any other which is not proscribed. Two, any organisation that gives directives to its members, to attack police stations, to kill policemen, to attack correctional centers, to kill warders, and you are now saying that Mr. President does not have the right to express his dismay and anger about that?

“We are the ones guilty of double standards. I don’t see anywhere in the world where an organisation, a person will stay somewhere outside Nigeria and will direct his members to attack the symbols of authority, the police, the military, especially when that organisation has been proscribed. By whatever name, you can’t justify giving orders to kill policemen or to kill anybody you do not agree with.”

If there is crisis in Nigeria, I will be the last to leave – Bishop Oyedepo

Founder of Living Faith Church, Bishop David Oyedepo, has said that leaving Nigeria even when the nation is engulfed in crisis is not a first action he would take.

According to the revered cleric, he would be the last to leave the country in case the situation becomes irreversibly terrible.

He said this during Sunday service, while admitting that things are indeed going wrong in the country.

In his words, “If there is crisis in this Nation, I will be the last to leave here.”

Speaking further, Oyedepo noted that nobody can enjoy and sustain the flow of favour without the fear of God as a lifestyle.

“Don’t rob nobody, don’t cheat on anyone. Don’t outsmart your business partners. Don’t swear falsely. Don’t take bribes. Favour is the companion of all that fear God and favour shall be your companion from now.

“Flowing in favour demands the doing of righteousness. You know there is the appropriation of righteousness that people emphasize today, but don’t be deceived, he that doeth righteousness is righteous. The doing righteousness: favour!

“There was an explosion of favour, until the time that his Word came. The Word of the Lord tried him,” he said.

This comes a week after popular televangelist, Paul Adefarasin subtly advised his Church member to start getting a plan B to exit Nigeria.

Fulanis are ready for breakup of Nigeria, more than any other ethnic nationality – Miyetti Allah

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, MACBAN, says the Fulani ethnic group is more prepared for division of Nigeria than any other ethnic nationality.

National Secretary of Miyetti Allah, Alhassan Saleh stated this while speaking to Sahara Reporters.

Amid the insecurity and tension caused by herders/farmers clash in some parts of Nigeria, southern governors had recently banned open grazing in the entire 17 states of the south.

Saleh, speaking on the governors’ resolution, said Fulani herders are not the problem facing the country.

He added that the Fulani ethnic group is ready for division of the country.

He said, “Herders are insignificant when it comes to problem of this country, are they the ones looting the treasury? What damages are they causing to this country? Compare to the criminal activities of ‘Yahoo’ boys (Internet fraudsters), kidnappers, political looters, bandits in power, vagabonds in power like Governor (Samuel) Ortom, do you think if there is no oil money, all these things will be happening?

“Today we are ready, let them divide the country, let them not wait till tomorrow. We are better prepared than any ethnic nationality. So we are ready, let them divide the country, let us die, we that don’t have the oil.”
